High-loading red carbon dots@NH2-MIL-53(Al) composite for ultrasensitive and selective picric acid detection via synergistic FRET and competitive absorption

Jie Hu,Hui Chen,Ruibin He,Pran Gopal Karmaker,Xiupei Yang,Fenglin Tang

Rapid and sensitive detection of picric acid (PA), a highly toxic and water-mobile nitroaromatic pollutant, is essential for environmental safety and public health protection. Herein, we fabricate a dual-emission ratiometric fluorescent probe by immobilizing high-load red-emitting carbon dots (R-CDs) onto NH₂-functionalized MIL-53(Al), forming an R-CDs/NH 2 -MIL-53(Al) composite for selective aqueous-phase PA sensing. R-CDs were hydrothermally synthesized with citric acid and neutral red as co-precursors. The loading efficiency was   maximized by systematically optimizing precursor molar ratios and dilution conditions. The composite exhibits distinct selective fluorescence quenching in the presence of PA. Mechanistic characterizations, including fluorescence lifetime decay measurements and spectral overlap analysis, verify that the fluorescence quenching originates from two synergistic quenching pathways, namely competitive light absorption and fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), rather than nonspecific physical interactions. This ratiometric sensing platform achieves a wide linear detection range of 0.1–70 μM and an ultralow limit of detection (LOD) of 32.9 nM. Spike-and-recovery assays using real environmental water samples (tap water, commercial bottled mineral water, and Jialing River surface water) produced recoveries of 99.7%–105.1%, with relative standard deviations (RSD) below 5.86% ( n  = 3). Furthermore, a smartphone-enabled visual quantitative method based on RGB color channel analysis was constructed, enabling portable on-site detection without large-scale laboratory instrumentation.

Rawiyah Alkahtani,Ahmad Iqbal,M.S. Al-Buriahi,Muhammad Ali Hamza Shahbaz,Amir Muhammad Afzal,Nora Mobark Farhan,Sohail Mumtaz,Abhinav Kumar

A MIL-53(Al)@KTi 2 (PO 4 ) 3 @rGO was successfully synthesized through hydrothermal and modified Hummers' methods. • The integration of porous MIL-53(Al) and conductive rGO enhanced charge transport and electroactive site accessibility. • The MIL-53(Al)@KTi 2 (PO 4 ) 3 @rGO electrode delivered a high specific capacity of 1189.23C g −1 . • The hybrid SC achieved an energy density of 45 Wh kg −1 and a power density of 2773 W kg −1 . • The ternary electrode showed a low overpotential of 46 mV and a Tafel slope of 49 mV dec −1 . The rising requirement of sustainable and multifunctional electrodes for energy storage and production has stimulated significant interest in advanced electrode architectures. In this study, a MIL-53(Al)@KTi 2 (PO 4 ) 3 @rGO composite was fabricated by means of combined hydrothermal and modified Hummers approach. The composite was rationally designed by integrating the MIL-53(Al), the favorable ionic transport characteristics of NASICON-type KTi 2 (PO 4 ) 3 , and the highly conductive network of rGO, there by promoting efficient charge and ion transport. Electrochemical evaluation in a three-electrode cell demonstrated a high specific capacity of 1189.23C g −1 . When assembled into a two-electrode supercapacitor device, the material delivered an energy density of 45 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 2773 W kg −1 . The device also maintained 92% of its initial capacity with a Coulombic efficiency of 97% after 10,000 consecutive charge–discharge cycles, indicating strong electrochemical durability. In addition to its energy storage performance, the MIL-53(Al)@KTi 2 (PO 4 ) 3 @rGO electrode demonstrated promising catalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction, requiring only 46 mV overpotential to achieve the targeted current density and exhibiting a Tafel slope of 49 mV dec −1 . These results highlight the synergistic contribution of the MOF, NASICON phosphate, and rGO components and establish MIL-53(Al)@KTi 2 (PO 4 ) 3 @rGO as a promising multifunctional platform for advanced supercapacitor systems and electrocatalytic hydrogen production.

A four-in-one aptamer-functionalized CDs@MIL-53(Fe) nanozyme platform for closed-loop detection, sterilization and safe disposal of foodborne pathogens

Xinyue Zhang,Yuandong Lin,Qijun Wang,Jun-Hu Cheng

Carbon dots endowed MIL-53(Fe) with four synergistic functions. • A dual-mode aptasensor enabled accurate pathogen detection. • A closed-loop strategy integrated detection with safe pathogen elimination. • A paper-based assay achieved rapid visual food safety screening. The increasing prevalence of foodborne pathogens has created an urgent need for integrated strategies on combining rapid on-site detection with safe inactivation. In this study, a multifunctional aptamer-modified CDs@MIL-53(Fe) nanocomposite was developed to construct a closed-loop management platform integrating target recognition, dual-mode signal transduction, and in situ photothermal-chemodynamic sterilization. This nanocomposite uniquely combined four functionalities within a single material: fluorescence emission, oxidase/peroxidase-mimicking activity, photocatalytic reactive oxygen species generation, and efficient photothermal conversion. After aptamer functionalization, the platform enabled both colorimetric and fluorescence dual-mode detection. Using Listeria monocytogenes as a proof-of-concept model, detection limits of 6.01 CFU/mL (colorimetric) and 61.38 CFU/mL (fluorescence) were obtained with the proposed method, within a linear range of 10 1 –10 6  CFU/mL. Importantly, the sensing mechanism allowed easy adaptation to other pathogens by simply replacing the aptamer. After detection, the same platform achieved in situ synergistic sterilization (>99.5%), and the used test strips could be safely discarded. Validation in chicken breast and milk samples, along with successful translation to a paper-based device, demonstrated the practical application potential of this universal pathogen management strategy in food safety supervision and disease prevention.

Core-shell BiOBr/BiOI/MIL-53(Fe)-min double Z-type heterojunction for efficient and stable photocatalytic degradation from small molecules to microplastics

Shuyue He,Jincheng Dai,Gang Liu,Xiyu Song,Hongjuan Zhang,Ruyi Xie

The persistent accumulation of organic pollutants in aquatic environments poses serious risks to ecosystems and public health. In this study, a double Z-type photocatalyst BiOBr/BiOI/MIL-53(Fe)-min was successfully fabricated by a two-step solvothermal-hydrothermal synthesis method. Characterization revealed tightly stacked BiOBr/BiOI nanosheets uniformly coating rod-like the 2-methylimidazole-modified metal–organic framework MIL-53(Fe) (MIL-53(Fe)-min), forming a core-shell structure with intimate interface contact. The formation of a unique double Z-type heterojunction significantly inhibited the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and optimized the charge carrier transfer pathway. Meanwhile, the surface stacked catalyst nanosheets not only improve the utilization efficiency of photons, but also greatly increase the contact area between active radicals and reactants. Under visible light irradiation, BBF-20 composite photocatalyst demonstrated a tetracyclines (TC) degradation rate of 90.6% within 100 min, with 80.3% of its activity retained after five cycles. Notably, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) microplastics achieved 56% weight loss after being treated by BBF-20 for 8 h. The main active species during degradation process were determined through quenching experiment and EPR tests. HPLC-MS analysis proposed the possible degradation pathways for TC and PET microplastics. Based on experimental results, a double Z-type heterojunction mechanism was proposed. This work presents a novel strategy for designing efficient photocatalysts to degrade antibiotics and microplastics in complex aquatic environments.

Fabrication of Magnetic Al-Based Fe3O4@MIL-53 Metal Organic Framework for Capture of Multi-Pollutants Residue in Milk Followed by HPLC-UV

Xue-Li Liu,Yong-Hui Wang,Shu-Yue Ren,Shuang Li,Yu Wang,Dian-Peng Han,Kang Qin,Yuan Peng,Tie Han,Zhi-Xian Gao,Jian-Zhong Cui,Huan-Ying Zhou

The efficient capture of multi-pollutant residues in food is vital for food safety monitoring. In this study, in-situ-fabricated magnetic MIL-53(Al) metal organic frameworks (MOFs), with good magnetic responsiveness, were synthesized and applied for the magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of chloramphenicol, bisphenol A, estradiol, and diethylstilbestrol. Terephthalic acid (H2BDC) organic ligands were pre-coupled on the surface of amino-Fe3O4composites (H2BDC@Fe3O4). Fe3O4@MIL-53(Al) MOF was fabricated by in-situ hydrothermal polymerization of H2BDC, Al (NO3)3, and H2BDC@Fe3O4. This approach highly increased the stability of the material. The magnetic Fe3O4@MIL-53(Al) MOF-based MSPE was combined with high-performance liquid chromatography-photo diode array detection, to establish a novel sensitive method for analyzing multi-pollutant residues in milk. This method showed good linear correlations, in the range of 0.05–5.00 μg/mL, with good reproducibility. The limit of detection was 0.004–0.108 μg/mL. The presented method was verified using a milk sample, spiked with four pollutants, which enabled high-throughput detection and the accuracies of 88.17–107.58% confirmed its applicability, in real sample analysis. Keywords:magnetic metal organic framework (MMOFs);magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE);multi-pollutants;high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)

Upgrading the pore-size scale of MIL-53 from microporous to macroporous for adsorbing triethyl phosphate and reducing the fire risk of polystyrene

Huidong Zhao,Bihe Yuan,Yuanyuan Zhan,Fangzhou Yang,Juanjuan Zhou,Congrui Qi,Chunying Lei,Yaoqiang Li

The combustion of polystyrene (PS) releases enormous amounts of toxic fumes and heat, which seriously affects human health and property safety. This research firstly proposes an efficiently feasible surgery to prepare a porous metal–organic framework (P-Fe-MOF) with macroporous based on the microporous MIL-53 and then uses its excellent porous structure to adsorb triethyl phosphate (TEP) as a flame retardant for PS to reduce its fire hazard. Scanning electron microscope images reveal that P-Fe-MOF has a distinct macroporous structure compared with original metal–organic framework (MOF). X-ray photoelectron spectra indicate that TEP has been successfully adsorbed into P-Fe-MOF. The combustion performance of PS composites is analyzed and the results suggest that the prepared PS composite has better flame-retardant performance than pure PS. This research presents a convenient method to fabricating a novel macroporous MOF , which provides a valuable enlightenment for broadening the application field of MOF and improving the comprehensive properties of polymers.

Investigation of the degradation and dehalogenation properties of florfenicol by heterogeneous Fenton reaction activated with MIL-53(Al)-supported nano zero-valent iron

Zhe Zhao,Wuming Xie,Zijun Huang,Haiming Cai,Yuemeng Ji,Baocong Zhao

The antibiotic florfenicol (FF) discharged into the aquatic environment may cause serious water pollution. Therefore, an effective way to eliminate FF antibiotics from the water bodies should be proposed. Herein, MIL-53(Al)-supported nano zero-valent iron (NZVI@MIL-53(Al)) was synthesized and applied to activate hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) to spark the Fenton reaction for FF antibiotics removal. The characterization results demonstrated the successful loading and good dispersion of NZVI onto MIL-53(Al). 100 % FF antibiotics degradation could be achieved under the optimal reaction conditions, including an initial FF antibiotics concentration of 20 mg L −1 , initial solution pH of 3.0, NZVI@MIL-53(Al) dose of 25 mg L −1 , and H 2 O 2 concentration of 0.2 mM. And after four cycles, the FF antibiotic degradation efficiency was still 81.18 %. The lowest tolerance for HCO 3 − was observed while the degradation activity was maintained at the presence of Cl − and HA. EPR measurement and free radical quenching experiment showed that ·OH was the main reactive specie in the NZVI@MIL-53(Al)/H 2 O 2 system. FF antibiotics degradation involved hydroxylation reactions (electrophilic substitution), dehalogenation, hydrolysis, and cleavage based on the UPLC-MS/MS analysis and DFT calculation. Noteworthy, 0.247 mg L −1 of F − and 1.2 mg L −1 of Cl − were detected in the solution after the reaction due to the breakage of the stable C–Cl bond and C–F bond. Finally, this work revealed that the NZVI@MIL-53(Al), with high stability and recyclability, could be a potential heterogeneous catalyst for treating antibiotic wastewater.

Furfural separation from aqueous solution by pervaporation membrane mixed with metal organic framework MIL-53(Al) synthesized via high efficiency solvent-controlled microwave

Heng Mao,Shen-Hui Li,Ao-Shuai Zhang,Li-Hao Xu,Heng-Xing Lu,Jing Lv,Zhi-Ping Zhao

Furfural is a typical biomass-derived platform chemical. Conventional processes for furfural production are uneconomical and energy-intensive because only about 3–6 wt% of furfural in the hydrolysate needs to be separated. In this study, a series of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) were prepared by incorporating MIL-53(Al) particles (MAPs) into poly (ether-block-amide) (PEBA 2533) matrix for pervaporation separation of furfural from aqueous solutions. The MAPs with anisotropic morphology and tunable particle size were precisely synthesized by a high-efficiency solvent-controlled microwave synthetic strategy. Effects of MAPs on the microstructures, physicochemical properties of MAPs/PEBA MMMs were investigated in detail through SEM, EDS, XRD, FTIR, TGA, N 2 adsorption and contact angle measurements. The experimental results suggested that compared with the PEBA control membrane, the addition of MAPs notably reduced the permeation energy barrier for furfural, but not for water. The coin-like MAPs-16.7 filled MMMs presented the optimal separation performance, which exceeded other furfural-permselective membranes. Impressively, a high total flux of 3800 g∙m −2 ∙h −1 and an adequate furfural/water separation factor of 50.2 was achieved in PV separation of 1 wt% furfural aqueous solution at 80 °C, which could substantially reduce capital investment and equipment footprint. Furthermore, a continuous testing was operated for 200 h in ternary furfural/acetic acid/water simulated hydrolysate, highlighting the long-term membrane stability in realistic applications. High performance and long-term stability made MAPs/PEBA MMMs potential candidates for industrial furfural production.

Carbon quantum dots (CQDs)/noble metal co-decorated MIL-53(Fe) as difunctional photocatalysts for the simultaneous removal of Cr(VI) and dyes

Zhoujun He,Ruowen Liang,Chen Zhou,Guiyang Yan,Ling Wu

Industrial sewage often contain metal ions and dyes, and it is difficult to efficiently remove them simultaneously. In this work, novel ternary MIL-53(Fe)/carbon quantum dots/noble metal (MIL-53(Fe)/CQDs/MNPs, MNPs = Ag, Pd, Au) nanocomposites have been rationally constructed and successfully fabricated by a facile two-step strategy with self-assembling and in-situ photoreduction. The resulting MIL-53(Fe)/CQDs/2%Au composite exhibits excellent photoactivity for the Cr(VI) reduction, the reduction ratio is nearly 100% after 20 min of visible light illumination. The rate constant of MIL-53(Fe)/CQDs/2%Au is calculated to be 0.1820 min −1 , which is around 7.4, 2.76, 1.77 and 1.47 times higher than that of as-prepared MIL-53(Fe), MIL-53(Fe)/CQDs, MIL-53(Fe)/CQDs/2%Ag and MIL-53(Fe)/CQDs/2%Pd, respectively. More significantly, MIL-53(Fe)/CQDs/2%Au nanocomposite has been proven to serve as bifunctional photocatalyst for simultaneously removing Cr(VI)/dye mixed system pollutants. The superior photoactivity may be due to the enhanced light absorption intensity, the superior electrical conductivity of Au and CQDs, as well as surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of Au. In particular, the possible photocatalytic reaction mechanism has been carefully investigated and proposed.

Amine-functionalized MIL-53(Al)-coated stainless steel fiber for efficient solid-phase microextraction of synthetic musks and organochlorine pesticides in water samples

Xie Lijun,Liu Shuqin,Han Zhubing,Jiang Ruifen,Zhu Fang,Xu Weiqin,Su Chengyong,Ouyang Gangfeng

The fiber coating is the key part of the solid-phase microextraction (SPME) technique, and it determines the sensitivity, selectivity, and repeatability of the analytical method. In this work, amine (NH 2 )-functionalized material of Institute Lavoisier (MIL)-53(Al) nanoparticles were successfully synthesized, characterized, and applied as the SPME fiber coating for efficient sample pretreatment owing to their unique structures and excellent adsorption properties. Under optimized conditions, the NH 2 -MIL-53(Al)-coated fiber showed good precision, low limits of detection (LODs) [0.025–0.83 ng L -1 for synthetic musks (SMs) and 0.051–0.97 ng L -1 for organochlorine pesticides (OCPs)], and good linearity. Experimental results showed that the NH 2 -MIL-53(Al) SPME coating was solvent resistant and thermostable. In addition, the extraction efficiencies of the NH 2 -MIL-53(Al) coating for SMs and OCPs were higher than those of commercially available SPME fiber coatings such as polydimethylsiloxane, polydimethylsiloxane–divinylbenzene, and polyacrylate. The reasons may be that the analytes are adsorbed on NH 2 -MIL-53(Al) primarily through π – π interactions, electron donor–electron acceptor interactions, and hydrogen bonds between the analytes and organic linkers of the material. Direct immersion (DI) SPME–gas chromatography–mass spectrometry methods based on NH 2 -MIL-53(Al) were successfully applied for the analysis of tap and river water samples. The recoveries were 80.3–115% for SMs and 77.4–117% for OCPs. These results indicate that the NH 2 -MIL-53(Al) coating may be a promising alternative to SPME coatings for the enrichment of SMs and OCPs.

Metal-organic framework [NH2-MIL-53(Al)] functionalized TiO2 nanotube photoanodes for highly stable and efficient photoelectrochemical cathodic protection of nickel-coated Mg alloy

Huan Yao,Ruifeng Zhang,Yu Wen,Yue Liu,Gang Yu,Zhi-Hui Xie

Metal-organic framework [MOF, i.e., NH 2 -MIL-53(Al)] modified TiO 2 (NMT) composite photoanodes were successfully prepared by hydrothermal synthesis and were used for the photoelectrochemical cathodic protection (PECCP) of nickel-plated magnesium alloy (Mg/Ni). Results showed that the synthesis temperature significantly impacted the morphology and PECCP performance of the NMT photoanodes. The NMT@150 photoanode prepared at a reaction temperature of 150 °C exhibited the best PECCP performance and produced a current density of 1980 μA cm −2 under visible light irradiation, which was 19.8 times higher than that of a single TiO 2 photoanode. The composite photoanode could polarize the open circuit potential of the coupled Mg/Ni electrode to -876 mV and remain relatively stable within 35 h. XPS and EPR tests showed that a Z -scheme heterojunction was formed between the NH 2 -MIL-53(Al) and TiO 2 nanotubes, allowing the photogenerated electrons to accumulate mainly on the conduction band of NH 2 -MIL-53(Al). The heterojunction greatly promoted the separation and transfer of photogenerated electron-hole in the NMT composite photoanode, significantly enhancing the PECCP performance for Mg/Ni.

Fabrication of highly selective PEBA mixed matrix membranes by incorporating metal-organic framework MIL-53 (Al) for the pervaporation separation of pyridine-water mixture

Rehan Khan,Wei-Min Liu,Ihtisham Ul Haq,Hong-Gang Zhen,Heng Mao,Zhi-Ping Zhao

Pyridine is generally found in the effluents from the synthesis of paints, rubber chemicals, vitamins, and pesticides. This study focused on improving the pervaporation (PV) performance of polyether block-amide (PEBA-2533) membranes cast on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) substrate, by incorporating the MIL-53 (Al) particles to prepare mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for pyridine separation from the aqueous solution. MIL-53 (Al) has a larger aperture size (8.5 Å) than the molecular size of the pyridine (6.0 Å), which could allow pyridine molecules to efficiently pass through its channels. The coadjacent MIL-53 particles created relatively continuous permeation pathways for the penetrants in the MMMs, which substantially enhanced the separation performance. Impressively, the resultant MMMs displayed superior pyridine separation performance at complex conditions. At 65 °C and 0.5 wt% pyridine aqueous solution, the separation factor and pyridine flux of PEBA/PVDF membrane were 17.3 and 143.5 g m −2  h −1 , which were improved using MIL-53@PEBA/PVDF MMMs to 48.1 and 226.9 g m −2  h −1 , respectively. Owing to the enhanced pyridine affinity, hydrophobic property, and thermal robustness, the resultant MMMs overcame the inherent trade-off between selectivity and permeability, and also displayed the promising long-term stability. These findings may provide valuable insights for developing novel MMMs with superior separation performance.
