Abstract Layered transition-metal oxide NaxTMO2 (TM = Ni, Fe, Mn, etc.) for cathodes in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) has gained significant research focus owing to its outstanding features, including low cost, ease of synthesis, and environmental benignity. However, it still suffers from poor structural stability, sluggish Na+ diffusion, and unsatisfactory cycling performance. To address these challenges, herein, we present an Mg doping strategy at different sites for P2–phase Na0.67Fe0.5Mn0.5O2 with superior sodium-ion storage. The Mg doping on the Fe-site can significantly diminish the Jahn–Teller effect, hence enhancing structural integrity and boosting the electrochemical performance: the Na0.67Mg0.05Fe0.45Mn0.5O2 cathode shows excellent charge-transfer kinetics along with a splendid Na+-ion diffusion coefficient (DNa+) of 2.53 × 10–10 cm2 s–1; it achieves a splendid discharge capacity of 188.3 mAh g–1 with boosted cycling capability and rate performance. The present study affords a fabulous strategy for manipulating high-performance cathodic materials for SIB applications.

Desorption electrospray ionization (DESI) mass spectrometry (MS) is an increasingly indispensable tool for the analysis and imaging of drug molecules. However, the drug tracked by DESI MS is subjected to poor signal sensitivity due to the low drug dosage and tissue distribution. In this work, a Mg-based micromotor active drug delivery carrier (Mg/PLGA/CANA/CHI) was proposed for the successful encapsulation of canagliflozin (CANA). Compared to the persral and passive drug administration, this active drug delivery vector significantly improved the sensitivity for renal detection of CANA at m/z 489.1378 and 479.1089, determined as [CANA+HCOO] − and [CANA+Cl] − by both UPLC-HRMS and DESI MS. Furthermore, the drug delivery carrier was adopted for the DESI MS imaging (DESI MSI) of CANA in the mouse kidney section, which resulted in higher sensitivity than those with persral and passive drug administration attributed to the intensive micromotor‑enhanced gastric mucosal adhesion, thus contributing to high oral bioavailability. Meanwhile, this Mg-based micromotor has no interference with MS and MSI detection of the drug. Overall, the strategy of combining the active drug delivery of Mg-based micromotors with mass spectrometry detection provides a new method for the detection of low-dose drugs, their localization in tissues, and the evaluation of therapeutic efficacy.

Aminosilane concentration tunes Mg-MOF-74 structural evolution and porosity. • CO 2 adsorption exhibits high uptake at both ambient and high pressures. • The mechanism of how defects and amine groups synergistically enhance CO 2 capture capacity was studied. In this study, we report a rational design and synthesis of hierarchically porous 5/PA2-Mg-MOF-74@APTES with high CO 2 capacity through propionic acid (PA) modulation and amine functionalization (APTES). Characterization results confirmed that an optimized PA concentration effectively induced mesopore formation and exposed more unsaturated Mg 2+ sites, thereby generating hierarchical porosity, while subsequent grafting of APTES successfully introduced amino functional groups This combined strategy leverages both defect engineering and chemical functionalization, synergistically promoting CO 2 adsorption. Performance evaluations revealed that the optimal adsorbent 5/PA2-Mg-MOF-74@APTES(1:1), achieved a CO 2 uptake of 4.91 mmol·g −1 at atmospheric pressure (1 bar) and a remarkable uptake of 17.38 mmol·g −1 at high pressure (15 bar) with significantly improved CO 2 /CH 4 selectivity. This work explores a synergistic enhancement mechanism of CO 2 adsorption from the interplay of defect engineering and amine functionalization conducted by experimental characterization and theoretical calculations, which provides a novel strategy for the design and fabrication of high-efficiency CO 2 adsorbents suitable for diverse pressure applications.

Lithium manganese iron phosphate (LiMn x Fe 1- x PO 4 , 0 < x < 1) is regarded as an upgraded cathode material compared to lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO 4 ), owing to its higher voltage plateau and superior energy density. However, its commercial application has been hindered by inherent poor electronic conductivity, abysmal Jahn–Teller effect and manganese dissolution associated with the Mn 3+ , which simultaneously degrades the rate capability and cycling performance. In this study, a dual-doping modification strategy based on a co-precipitation and high-temperature solid-state reaction method is proposed, successfully yielding magnesium and niobium dual-doped LiMn 0.7 Fe 0.3 PO 4 /C composites. The results demonstrate that an appropriate amount of Mg and Nb dual-doping can effectively enhance the electronic/ionic conductivity, improve structural stability, and accelerate lithium-ion migration kinetics of the manganese-enriched lithium manganese iron phosphate. The as-prepared LMFP-Mg2Nb2 sample exhibits optimal rate performance and cycling stability. It maintains a reversible capacity of 145.27 mAh g −1 even at a high current rate of 4C. Furthermore, after 100 cycles at 1C, it demonstrates an excellent discharge capacity of 149.97 mAh g −1 with a high-capacity retention of 98.29%. The synthetic strategy by co-precipitation and solid-state method involved in this work is analogous to the mainstream commercial technical approach for LiFePO 4 -based cathode material and compatibility with commercial LiFePO 4 -production equipment, thereby laying a significant foundation for the industrial application of high-energy-density lithium manganese iron phosphate.

Due to the low hydration activity of steel slag, its mechanical properties are insufficient, which limits its strategic application in steel slag based cementitious composite. In this study, the promoting effect of calcined layered double hydroxide (CLDH) on the hydration process, mechanical properties, and microstructure of high-volume steel slag cementitious materials was systematically investigated. The results showed that the addition of CLDH significantly optimized the material’s performance. When the mass fraction of steel slag was 70 wt% and the CLDH dosage was 2.0 wt%, the 7-day compressive strength reached 42.5 MPa, indicating an increase of 23.9% compared with the control group. Microscopic characterization suggested that CLDH slightly enhanced the hydration reaction of steel slag and increased the generation of hydration products through the nucleation effect. The addition of CLDH demonstrated a change in the composition of C-(A)-S-H to a higher Al/Ca ratio. Meanwhile, the lamellar structure of CLDH effectively filled the pores and promoted the densification of the matrix. This research provides valuable insights for the high-value utilization of steel slag and the design of high-performance cementitious materials.

Photocatalyst-based degradation of antibiotic pollutants is recognized as a promising strategy for wastewater treatment and solar energy conversion and utilization. The hydrothermal-ultrasound synthesized Mg-doped BiOCl/BiOIO 3 heterojunction (MBB) exhibits superior light-driven tetracycline (TC) degradation, achieving 87.69% removal in 60 min and outperforming pristine BiOCl and BiOIO 3 by 2.1- and 1.5-fold, enabled by band matching that suppresses charge recombination and improves carrier separation. Radical-trapping experiments reveal •OH and •O 2 ⁻ as the dominant reactive species responsible for TC photodegradation. Photocurrent response, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and fluorescence spectroscopy (PL) tests confirm that the MBB heterostructure has a faster migration rate of photogenerated carriers and a lower charge recombination rate. DFT calculations reveal that Mg doping shrinks the bandgap of BiOCl and optimizes the energy band arrangement of the heterojunction, thereby enhancing the light absorption capability. After five cycles, the MBB-0.2 (Mg-BiOCl/BiOIO 3 mass ratio 1:0.2) sample retains 76% degradation efficiency, without significant changes in phase and morphology, highlighting its stability for practical water treatment. This study attains the optimization of various photocatalysts through strategic doping and the construction of heterojunction structures, thereby maximizing the utilization rate of solar energy, providing a new research approach for the development of efficient solar conversion systems.

Sunlight-driven valorization of benzyl alcohol (BA) offers a sustainable route to co-produce high-value organic chemicals and green hydrogen, yet the practical deployment of this photocatalytic strategy is severely hindered by unsatisfactory conversion efficiency and product selectivity. Here we report a facile magnesium (Mg) doping strategy to modify Zn 3 In 2 S 6 (abbreviated as ZIS) photocatalysts for boosted photocatalytic BA conversion. Under optimized doping content, the Mg-modified Zn 3 In 2 S 6 (denoted hereafter as Mg-ZIS) enables efficient BA transformation within 1 hour of solar irradiation, achieving a product yield of 94.4% and benzaldehyde (BAD) selectivity of 94%, alongside concurrent hydrogen evolution. The Mg-ZIS exhibits competitive apparent quantum yields (AQY) of 71.68% at 380 ± 20 nm and 16.63% at 420 ± 20 nm for BAD generation. Further analysis indicates that Mg dopants strengthen the Zn-S/In-S covalent bonding, which improves photocarrier separation and their surface accessibility. Mechanistic study further reveals that the exceptional BAD selectivity origins from a slow BAD backward reaction as Mg doping facilitates the competing hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) due to the negatively-shifted band edge alignments. This work validates the efficacy of metal doping in modulating the photocatalytic properties of sulfide-based photocatalysts, and provides a viable paradigm for the rational design and fabrication of high-performance photocatalysts toward efficient organic transformation and coupled hydrogen production.

Elevated phosphorus levels in aquatic ecosystems have been identified as a critical driver of eutrophication processes, necessitating resource-recovery remediation strategies. Adsorption techniques show particular promise for nutrient recovery due to their selective binding capacities and operational feasibility. In this study, the Mg- and Ca-modified biogas residue-based biochar (Ca-Mg/BC) was successfully prepared via a “bimetallic loading-pyrolysis” modification strategy. The optimum temperature for the calcination of the material and the salt solution impregnation concentrations were determined experimentally through optimization of the synthesis conditions. Structural and chemical analyses of Ca–Mg/BC demonstrated that the material contains MgO and CaO. The specific surface area of Ca–Mg/BC was 8.49 times higher than that of the unmodified biochar (BC). The optimized Ca–Mg/BC achieved 95% phosphate removal rate (157.13 mg/g adsorption capacity). FTIR and XPS characterization results indicated the importance of Ca/Mg loading in phosphate capture. MgO and CaO were mainly loaded on the surface of the material and adsorbed phosphate through a chemical reaction. Crucially, the phosphate-laden biochar exhibited potential as a nutrient-enriched soil amendment, opening the material loop from wastewater treatment to agricultural applications. This sustainable strategy simultaneously addresses water pollution control and sustainable development, providing environmentally benign solutions compatible with industrial effluent treatment and sustainable agriculture practices.

The long-term corrosion resistance of conventional micro-arc oxidation (MAO) coatings on magnesium alloy is limited by the inherent micro-scale pores. To address this issue, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) and zinc gluconate (ZnG) loaded ZIF-8 (ZnG@ZIF-8) were synthesized and incorporated into the MAO coating. The electrochemical and immersion tests showed that the MAO composite coating doped with ZIF-8 and ZnG@ZIF-8 ((ZIF-8 + ZnG@ZIF-8)/MAO) displayed optimal corrosion resistance. The corrosion current density ( j corr ) of the pristine (ZIF-8 + ZnG@ZIF-8)/MAO composite coating (3.38 nA cm −2 ) is 63.3 times lower than that of the blank MAO coating (214 nA cm −2 ), indicating the significant enhancement in corrosion protection of the nanoparticle to the coatings. Even after 32 days of immersion in a 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution, the j corr of the former was as low as 87.3 nA cm −2 , much lower than that of the blank MAO coating (1710 nA cm −2 ). These findings provide new insights into the design of corrosion-resistant MAO composite on magnesium alloy surfaces via the incorporation of inhibitor-loaded ZIF-8 nanocontainers.

MAO/CS composite coatings were generated on Mg-1.75Zn-0.56Ca alloy surface for protection and improving biocompatibility of Mg -Zn- Ca alloy in the physiological environment. The microstructure, surface analysis and corrosion resistance of samples were evaluated by scanning electronic microcopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in SBF solution. In addition, in vitro cell cytotoxicity test was performed by MTT tests. The findings of this work indicated that MAO/CS composite coatings were smooth and defect-free. The MAO/CS coatings retained a low degradation rate and the solution pH value at a moderate level (≤7.5) during immersion test. The corrosion resistance and cell proliferation were greatly enhanced by the composite coating. Furthermore, the different cell cytotoxicity on Mg alloy, MAO and MAO/CS coating was discussed.

The widespread acceptance of nonaqueous rechargeable metal–gas batteries, known for their remarkably high theoretical energy density, faces obstacles such as poor reversibility and low energy efficiency under high charge–discharge current densities. To tackle these challenges, a novel catalytic cathode architecture for Mg–CO 2 batteries, fabricated using a one-pot electrospinning method followed by heat treatment, is presented. The resulting structure features well-dispersed molybdenum carbide nanodots embedded within interconnected carbon nanofibers, forming a 3D macroporous conducting network. This cathode design enhances the volumetric efficiency, enabling effective discharge product deposition, while also improving electrical properties and boosting catalytic activity. This enhancement results in high discharge capacities and excellent rate capabilities, while simultaneously minimizing voltage hysteresis and maximizing energy efficiency. The battery exhibits a stable cycle life of over 250 h at a current density of 200 mA g −1 with a low initial charge–discharge voltage gap of 0.72 V. Even at incredibly high current densities, reaching 1600 mA g −1 , the battery maintains exceptional performance. These findings highlight the crucial role of cathode architecture design in enhancing the performance of Mg–CO 2 batteries and hold promise for improving other metal–gas batteries that involve deposition–decomposition reactions.

With the increasing global demand for large-scale electrical energy storage , rechargeable Mg-based batteries are preferable due to their substantial prospective benefits in terms of raw abundance, theoretical capacity, and operational safety. Herein, we demonstrate for the first time V 2 MoO 8 synthesized by a facile electrospinning method as a cathode material for rechargeable magnesium batteries with the electrolytes containing Mg 2+ or Mg 2+ /Li + ions. SEM and HRTEM indicate that the V 2 MoO 8 sample presents wedged-shaped cuboid, 300–500 nm (thickness) ×4–6 µm (length) and its monoclinic phase structure provides a interlayer distance of 4.20 Å. As cathode material, V 2 MoO 8 is discharged/charged in a specially self-designed mould battery using Mg metal anode at current densities from 20 to 500 mA g −1 . It delivers a high initial discharge capacity of 312 mA h g −1 with the initial coulombic efficiency of 87.2% at 20 mA g −1 in 0.4 M (PhMgCl) 2 -AlCl 3 /1.0 M LiCl/THF electrolyte and presents good cycling and rate performance. XPS analysis reveals that both Mg 2+ and Li + ions take part in the cathode intercalation reaction, along with the valence changes of Mo/V ions. Additionally, a reversible capacity of ca. 210 mA h g −1 is obtained in Mg 2+ electrolyte with the 1st cycle efficiency of 94% at 60 °C. The poor capacity retention is partially attributed to the irreversible phase change to amorphous state of V 2 MoO 8 .
