The In-based double perovskite halides have been widely studied for promising optical-electric applications. The halide hexagonal perovskite Cs 2 LiInCl 6 was isolated using solid-state reactions and investigated using X-ray diffraction and solid-state NMR spectra. The material adopts a 12-layered hexagonal structure (12 R ) consisting of layered cationic orders driven by the cationic charge difference and has Li + cations in the terminal site and In 3+ in the central site of face-shared octahedron trimers. Such a cationic ordering pattern is stabilized by electrostatic repulsions between the next-nearest neighboring cations in the trimers. The LiCl 6 octahedron displays large distortion and is confirmed by 7 Li SS NMR in the Cs 2 LiInCl 6 . The Cs 2 LiInCl 6 material has a direct bandgap of ~4.98 eV. The Cs 2 LiInCl 6 : Mn 2+ displays redshift luminescence (centered at ~610–622 nm) from the substituted Mn 2+ emission in octahedron with larger PLQY (17.8 %–48 %) compared with that of Cs 2 NaInCl 6 : Mn 2+ . The Mn-doped materials show luminescent concentration quenching and thermal quenching. The composition Cs 2 Li 0.99 In 0.99 Mn 0.02 Cl 6 exhibits the highest PL intensity, a maximum PLQY of 48 %, and high luminescent retention rate of ~86 % below 400 K and is suitable for application for pc-LED. These findings contribute to our understanding of the chloride perovskites and hold potential for widespread optical applications.

The Eu 2+ activated Ca 8 ZnGd(PO 4 ) 7 :Eu 2+ green light emitting phosphors and Eu 2+ /Mn 2+ co-doped tunable light emitting phosphors Ca 8 ZnGd(PO 4 ) 7 :Eu 2+ ,Mn 2+ were successfully synthesized via the solid-state reaction method. The X-ray powder diffraction measurements and Rietveld refinement were used to assess the phase composite and crystal structure. The photoluminescence properties, diffuse reflection spectrum, chromaticity coordinates and fluorescence decay curves of the samples were investigated. It has been confirmed that the resonant type Eu 2+ →Mn 2+ energy transfer occurs via a dipole-quadrupole interaction. With various Eu 2+ /Mn 2+ molar ratios, the spectrum-tunable phosphors are obtained from green (0.183, 0.335) to white (0.297, 0.298).

The design of optical materials with efficient white-light emission performance is still of great interest in the fields of visible lighting and communication. In this paper, Yb 3+ /Mn 2+ /Tm 3+ tri-doped upconversion (UC) white-emitting transparent glass ceramics have been successfully fabricated by a melt-quenching technique. The structure and luminescent properties of the resultant samples were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), optical transmission spectra, and photoemission spectra. Owing to the co-precipitation of dual-phase γ -Ga 2 O 3 / β -YF 3 nanocrystals in the matrix, the Yb 3+ /Mn 2+ co-doped glass ceramics exhibited tunable dual-to single-broadband UC emission with the content of Mn 2+ varying from 0.75 to 4 mol%. After Tm 3+ ions were introduced into the co-doped GC sample, a UC white-light luminescence was realized by combining the yellowish emission (510–630 nm) of Yb 3+ -Mn 2+ pair and blue emission (476 nm) of Tm 3+ . Importantly, the white-emitting glass ceramic sample showed excellent thermal recoverability during a heating and cooling cycle within the temperature range of 303–573 K. Our results indicated the designed Yb 3+ /Mn 2+ /Tm 3+ tri-doped glass ceramics may be a promising candidate for the white-light lasers source.

Recently, low-dimensional copper(I)-based perovskite or derivatives have gained extensive attention in scintillator applications because of their environmental friendliness and good stabilities. However, the unsatisfactory scintillation performance and complex fabrication processes hindered their practical applications. Herein, efficient yellow emissive CsCu2I3 nanocrystals (NCs) were successfully prepared via a simple Mn2+-assisted hot-injection method. The added Mn2+ effectively induced the phase transformation from Cs3Cu2I5 to CsCu2I3, leading to the preparation of single-phase CsCu2I3 NCs with few defects and a high fluorescence performance. The as-prepared “optimal CsCu2I3 NCs” exhibited superior photoluminescence (PL) performance with a record-high PL quantum yield (PLQY) of 61.9%. The excellent fluorescence originated from the radiative recombination of strongly localized one-dimension (1D) self-trapped excitons (STEs), which was systematically investigated via the wavelength-dependent PL excitation, PL emission, and temperature-dependent PL spectra. These CsCu2I3 NCs also exhibited outstanding X-ray scintillation properties with a high light yield (32000 photons MeV–1) and an ultralow detection limit (80.2 nGyair s–1). Eventually, the CsCu2I3 NCs scintillator film achieved an ultrahigh (16.6 lp mm–1) spatial resolution in X-ray imaging. The CsCu2I3 NCs also exhibited good stabilities against X-ray irradiation, heat, and environmental storage, indicating their great application potential in flexible X-ray detection and imaging.

To generate red emissions, manganese (IV) ions have recently gained recognition as potent non-rare-earth activators. However, the oxide and fluoride hosts that offer suitable environments for Mn 4+ require careful preparation, involving precise control of reaction parameters like redox equilibrium and temperature. In the current work, we show simultaneous oxidation of Mn 2+ to Mn 4+ by devitrification of glassy Na 2 Ge 4 O 9 : Mn under moderate atmospheric conditions and under the argon atmosphere. The G-sample was devitrified via thermal treatment after the parent glass, which shares the same chemical formula as dilithium tetragermanate (Na 2 Ge 4 O 9 ), was created through the use of traditional melt-quenching (MQ). Optical spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopic are utilized to confirm the Mn 2+ oxidation to Mn 4+ from glass stat to glass ceramic after thermal treatment. Due to the transition from Mn 2+ to Mn 4+ , a sharp 668 nm emission peak is recorded whereas the red emission peaking at 611 nm monitored in glass is steadily reduced. The temperature-dependent PL spectra of the Na 2 Ge 4 O 9 :0.1Mn +4 , red-emitting GC in the temperature range ∼295–490 K were recorded. The PL emission intensity decreases gradually with increasing the temperature. The technique showcased for producing Na 2 Ge 4 O 9 :Mn 4+ phosphors could be expanded to synthesize other phosphors incorporating activators possessing a high oxidation state.

A series of novel red emitting Mn2+-activated SrZnSO phosphors were successfully synthesized by solid-state reaction at high temperature. The photoluminescence (PL) and mechanoluminescence (ML) properties of these Mn2+-activated SrZnSO phosphors with different Mn2+ concentrations were investigated. With increasing the concentration of Mn2+ from x = 0 to 0.04, the unit cell volume increased from 153.82 to 154.19 Å3 while the optical band gap decreased from 3.74 to 3.43 eV. The site occupation of Mn2+ in the host lattice was demonstrated by Rietveld refinement, the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrum, and the spectroscopic properties. A broad band emission peak at 603 nm of SrZn1−xMnxSO (0.001 ≤ x ≤ 0.04) with an excitation wavelength of 318 nm was attributed to electronic transitions of Mn2+ from the 4T1(4G) level to the 6A1(6S) level. The lifetime of SrZn1−xMnxSO (0.001 ≤ x ≤ 0.04) decreased monotonously from 2.97 to 0.82 ms with increasing Mn2+ concentration. In particular, intense emission of red light from SrZn1−xMnxSO (0.001 ≤ x ≤ 0.04) under compressive load could be observed even with the naked eye, indicating that SrZn1−xMnxSO could be used for stress sensors or stress imaging. There was a linear correlation between the ML intensity and external load in SrZn1−xMnxSO, and the ML intensity could be recovered under UV light irradiation. Considering its advantages of non-destruction, reproducibility, and high ML intensity, SrZn1−xMnxSO might be useful for non-destructive detection of stress.

By-product ozone emission is one of the challenges for applying dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) technology for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) removal. In this study, a DBD reactor followed by a wet scrubber (WS) containing a solution of metal ions (Fe 2+ /Mn 2+ /Cu 2+ ) was used to reuse ozone for further oxidation of typical VOC toluene. Compared with the degradation effect of the DBD reactor alone, DBD coupled WS/iron system not only improved the toluene removal efficiency but also significantly reduced the ozone emission. The ozone removal efficiency reached as high as 98% in the DBD coupled WS/Fe 2+ system. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) tests showed that ozone was converted into radicals such as hydroxyl radicals in Fe 2+ and Cu 2+ solution, which further oxidized toluene in WS/iron. Quenching experiments showed that the contribution for toluene degradation by radicals was up to 75% and 62% in Fe 2+ and Mn 2+ reactor, respectively. This study demonstrates that the DBD coupled WS system has the potential to be an environmentally friendly technology for gaseous VOCs removal.

Dual-emitting and thermochromic manganese ion single doped ZnGa2–yAlyO4 phosphors were prepared by solid-state reaction. The regulation of the valence state and the luminescent properties, especially the luminescent thermal stability of manganese ions in ZnGa2–yAlyO4, are discussed in detail. When excited by ultraviolet (UV) light, the emission spectra of ZnGa2O4:Mn2+,Mn4+ present an ultranarrow green emission band at 503 nm with a fwhm of 22 nm, which derives from the Mn2+ ions formed by the self-reduction of doped Mn4+, and a red emission band of the Mn4+ ions at 669 nm. In addition, a ZnGa2–yAlyO4:Mn2+,Mn4+ solid solution was designed and synthesized by Al3+ replacing Ga3+. The doping of Al3+ effectively inhibited the degree of Mn4+ self-reduction to Mn2+, thus realizing the regulation of valence state of manganese ions. Interestingly, the thermal stability of luminescence shows that the response of Mn2+ and Mn4+ to temperature is obviously different in ZnGa2–yAlyO4, implying the potential of the prepared phosphors as optical thermometers. Subsequently, three kinds of optical thermometers with superior color discrimination and high relative sensitivity (Sr) based on the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technique were realized in 100–475 K. The Sr value of ZGO:0.005Mn/ZGA0.5O:0.005Mn/ZGAO:0.005Mn phosphors can be as high as 4.345%/4.001%/3.488% K–1 (at 350/325/400 K), reflecting the great potential of ZnGa2O4:Mn2+,Mn4+ for optical thermometry applications.

Zn 1− x Mn x TiNb 2 O 8 (0.05 ≤ x ≤ 0.30) microwave dielectric ceramics were synthesized by the solid-state reaction method. The impacts of partial substitution of Mn 2+ for Zn 2+ on the crystal phase, crystal structure, grain morphology, and microwave dielectric properties were investigated in detail. Minor ixiolite phase of MnTiNb 2 O 8 was detected via the X-ray diffraction at higher x levels. Structural characteristics, such as porosity, packing fraction, and [Zn/Ti/NbO 6 ] octahedron distortion, were discussed to reveal the correlations between the microwave dielectric characteristics and the crystal structure. It was suggested that the permittivity was related to the porosity and the minor phase, while the quality factor was mainly determined by the packing fraction and relative density. The temperature coefficient of the resonant frequency was positively correlated with the distortion of [Zn/Ti/NbO 6 ] octahedron. Among all Zn 1− x Mn x TiNb 2 O 8 ceramics, the sample of x = 0.05 sintered at 1100 °C exhibited good microwave dielectric properties: ε r = 35.91, Q × f = 63,672 GHz (at 6.52 GHz), and τ f = − 68.68 ppm/°C, which provided an effective performance modulating approach for microwave dielectric ceramic design.

A series of CaZn 2 P 2 O 8 :Sm 3+ , Mn 2+ phosphors are synthesized by a solid-state reaction method in air. The crystal structures and luminescence properties are investigated. CaZn 2 P 2 O 8 :Sm 3+ phosphor with excitation 402 nm emits red light in the range of 550–750 nm owing to the 4 G 5/2 → ( 6 H 5/2 , 6 H 7/2 , 6 H 9/2 , and 6 H 11/2 ) transitions of Sm 3+ ion. CaZn 2 P 2 O 8 :Mn 2+ phosphor with excitation 400 nm emits yellow-green light in the range of 500–650 nm due to the 4 T 1 (G) → 6 A 1 transition of the Mn 2+ ion. CaZn 2 P 2 O 8 :Sm 3+ , Mn 2+ phosphor with excitation 400 nm shows a tunable emission in the range of 500–750 nm with changing Sm 3+ or Mn 2+ ion content. The optimal Sm 3+ and Mn 2+ ion concentrations are ∼4 mol% and 3 mol%, respectively.

Wolframite-structured Zn 1−x Mn x ZrNb 2 O 8 (x=0.02, 0.04, 0.06, 0.08, 0.10) ceramics were synthesized by the conventional solid-state method. The effects of Mn 2+ substitution on the crystal structure, crystal chemistry and microwave dielectric properties of ZnZrNb 2 O 8 were investigated. Bond ionicity, lattice energy and thermal expansion of the ceramics were calculated by the complex chemical bond theory, which were used to investigate the correlation between intrinsic factors and microwave dielectric properties. The ε r values were dependent on the electronic oxide polarizabilities of Zn 1−x Mn x ZrNb 2 O 8 ceramics. The Q·f values decreased from 51,300 to 44,900 GHz, which could be explained in terms of packing fraction and lattice energy. The τ f values were shifted to positive direction with the increase of Mn 2+ contents, which indicated that the distortion of the [BO6] octahedral was closely related to τ f values. In addition, thermal expansion coefficient also affected the temperature stability of ceramics. Typically, an excellent microwave dielectric property was obtained in the Zn 0.9 Mn 0.1 ZrNb 2 O 8 with a ε r of 29.43, an appropriate Q·f of 44,900 GHz and a near zero τ f of −5.61 ppm/°C.

High-manganese-to-iron-ratio lithium manganese iron phosphate (LMFP) is a promising candidate for next-generation electric vehicle cathodes due to its high energy density, low cost, and safety. However, its poor cycling reversibility, especially at elevated temperatures, has limited its practical application, which is mainly due to the Jahn-Teller effect and Mn-ion dissolution. Ion doping is a commonly used modification method. Herein, in this work, a novel V/F co-doping and Mn 2+ capture membrane coated with CNT-doped hydroxyapatite (HAP-C) were employed to modify LMFP. The V/F co-doped LMFP showed enhanced structure stability during cycling tests compared to LMFP, and the capacity retention rate increased to 89.5 % after 300 cycles at 1C/1C. Meanwhile, the Mn 2+ -capturing separator further protected the anode stability by preventing the deposition of dissolved manganese ions. Due to these combined properties, the doped cathode battery using the HAP-C modified separator exhibited less manganese deposition on the anode. After 300 cycles at 1C/1C, 25 °C, the capacity retention rate further improved to 96.7 %, and after 300 cycles at 0.5C/0.5C, 45 °C, the capacity retention rate increased to 84.0 %, demonstrating outstanding cycling stability. This comprehensive strategy provides a basis for developing high-energy-density and long-cycle-life lithium-ion battery.
