Exploring dual-emission properties in Mn4+ distinctively activated BaTaF7 red emitting phosphor

Konglan Chen,Shiyu Jia,Zifan Shao,Xinxin Han,Jian Yuan,Yayun Zhou,Tingting Deng

Mn4+-activated fluoride phosphors, which exhibit narrow-band red light emission, have been extensively employed in white LED applications. However, the majority of existing research has predominantly focused on single-site emission phenomena of Mn4+ in fluoride matrices. The exploration of systems with multi-site Mn4+ luminescence is of significant importance, as it may promote the broader application of such materials. In this study, a dual-emission fluoride phosphor, BaTaF7:Mn4+ (BTF), was successfully synthesized, which exhibits two strong zero-photon line (ZPL) emissions at 627 and 630 nm. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were employed to investigate the electronic structure and luminescence properties of the phosphor. The results suggest that Mn4+ ions tend to substitute for Ba2+ and Ta5+ in the BaTaF7 host lattice, leading to significant distortion of the Mn4+ local environment. This distortion gives rise to the dual-emission and short fluorescence lifetime of the synthesized phosphor. The white LED with BTF phosphor encapsulation shows high potential for display backlighting sources with its 113.4% NTSC color gamut achieved through RGB primary color spectral filtering. The synthesis and investigation of phosphor present a promising approach for designing and developing multi-emission Mn4+-activated fluoride phosphors with unique luminescent properties. This study provides new insights for optimizing the performance and expanding the applications of luminescent materials.

Deep red SrLaGa3O7:Mn4+ for near ultraviolet excitation of white light LEDs

Quan Liu,Puxian Xiong,Xiaoqi Liu,Yubin Fu,Sheng Wu,Quan Dong,Yuanyuan Li,Yan Chen,Zhijun Ma,Mingying Peng

Red luminescent phosphor SrLaGa3O7:Mn4+ was prepared by the traditional high-temperature solid-state reaction. The structural characteristics, luminescence properties and the performance of this phosphor were investigated in light-emitting diode devices. Deep red emission peaking at ∼715 nm was observed under the excitation wavelength in the range of 220–550 nm, which is related to the charge transfer band of Mn4+–O2− and the 4A2g → 4T1g, 4A2g → 2T2g and 4A2g → 4T2g transitions of Mn4+. In particular, SrLaGa3(1−x) O7:3xMn4+ exhibits the strongest absorption in the near ultraviolet region (350–410 nm). This feature can well match the emission of current commercial near-ultraviolet chips, and is expected to be used in white LEDs. Moreover, we also conducted a thermal quenching experiment on the SrLaGa3O7:Mn4+ phosphor, and the obtained activation energy was 0.4 eV, indicating that the quenching temperature is (T50%) 370 K. Finally, the application of the SrLaGa3O7:Mn4+ phosphor in constructing a LED device was explored. At a driving current of 20 mA, the Commission on Illumination (CIE) coordinates of the device are (0.3281, 0.3080), with a high color rendering index (CRI) of 91.9 and a low corresponding color temperature (CCT) of 4315 K. Experimental results show that the phosphor has broad prospects in preparing white LED devices excited by near-ultraviolet light.

A Guanidinium-Based Mn4+-Doped Red-Emitting Hybrid Phosphor with High Stability

Hong Ming,Yifei Zhao,Yayun Zhou,Shuai Zhang,Yuanjing Wang,Enhai Song,Zhiguo Xia,Qinyuan Zhang

Great efforts have been put in search of phosphors to fulfill the requirements for phosphor-converted white light-emitting diodes (pc-WLEDs). Herein, a general organic–inorganic hybridization strategy was demonstrated in Mn4+-, Cr3+-, or Eu3+-doped guanidinium-based zero-dimensional hybrid fluorides to find phosphors for pc-WLEDs. Among which, GA3AlF6:Mn4+ (where GA represents the guanidinium cation [C(NH2)3]+) was selected to reveal their crystal structure, local symmetry, and luminescence properties. Density functional theory calculations suggested that GA3AlF6 with a wide band gap (∼5.24 eV) and the Fi′ interstitials are generated to balance the charge differences caused by non-equivalent doping. The GA3AlF6:Mn4+ hybrid could sustain ∼573 K high temperature without degradation and keep 90.1% of the original luminescence intensity at ∼373 K. A pc-WLED with wide color gamut (108.3%) of National Television System Committee standard was fabricated with GA3AlF6:Mn4+, suggesting its potential in high-quality backlight displays. This work not only brings a brand-new kind of organic–inorganic fluoride phosphor family but also provides great guiding significance for future exploration of fluoride-based functional materials containing a hybrid structure.

Structure and luminescence behaviour of a novel red-emitting fluoroperovskite for display backlight application

Xiaoling Xie,Jing Wan,Haiqi Pu,Xi Zhang,Song Qing,Qiang Zhou,Lingxiang Chu,Tao Yang,Yayun Zhou,Zhengliang Wang

In this work, we present a brand-new narrowband red-emitting fluoroperovskite via the introduction of Mn4+ into NaZnF3 through a facile co-precipitation method at room temperature. The physicochemical properties of the fluoroperovskite such as crystal and electronic structures, morphology, and elemental composition, as well as its spectroscopic properties such as luminescence behaviours and optical performance were characterized and investigated in detail. Evidence shows that NaZnF3:Mn4+ exhibits a uniform particulate shape with single-phase crystallinity. By virtue of the non-equivalent substitution and the [MnF6] octahedral distortion in the fluoride host, sharp red emissions of phonon sidebands and the zero-phonon line upon blue light excitation are identified. Benefiting from the unique spectral feature, a wide colour gamut of 104.1% NTSC is achieved by coating β-SiAlON:Eu2+ and NaZnF3:Mn4+ on an InGaN chip, indicating the potential use of the Mn4+ fluoroperovskite as a colour converter for display backlight application.

Simultaneous construction of impermeable dual-shell stabilizing fluoride phosphors for white light-emitting diodes

Peilan Luo,Menglin Ye,Wenli Zhou,Pingping Wan,Zhongyun Ma,Zhongxian Qiu,Jilin Zhang,Ru-Shi Liu,Shixun Lian

The traditional strategy to improve material stability is to cover the surface with a shell to resist adverse environmental factors. For the red-emitting fluoride materials with easily hydrolyzed Mn 4+ on the surface, many strategies have been reported with limited effectiveness. In this work, simultaneous construction of an impermeable dual-shell on Mn 4+ -doped fluoride is proposed to solve the instability problem by a simple pyruvic acid (PA) treatment. The internal quantum efficiency of the K 2 SiF 6 :Mn 4+ with dual-shell can be optimized up to 99.71%, the photoluminescence intensity can maintain 88.5% of the original intensity after soaking in water for 360 h, and the body color is not changed even in boiling. The reduction effect of the PA solution builds a hard fluoride shell by removal of the surface Mn 4+ , and the hydrogen bonding effect of PA molecular leads to the formation of a soft organic shell. The dual-shell can effectively block the damage of fluoride by external water molecules and achieve a significant improvement in water stability. The dual effect of PA is derived from its special molecular structure containing α -ketone carbonyl and carboxyl groups. This hypothesis is supported by the results of the moisture resistance of fluoride-treated with a variety of solvents similar in molecular structure to PA. In addition, DFT calculations simulated various hydrogen bond structures that may be formed between PA molecules and fluoride surface atoms.

A highly efficient red emitting phosphor with enhanced blue-light absorption through a local crystal field regulation strategy

Sisi Liang,Decai Huang,Jie Hu,Dejian Chen,Kunyuan Xu,Haomiao Zhu

Mn 4+ -doped oxide phosphors with emission in deep-red region are promising for the application of plant cultivation lighting. However, it remains a great challenge to synthesize these phosphors with high blue-light absorption efficiency, which is pivotal for their practical commercial applications. Herein, we conducted a local crystal field regulation strategy to notably improve the luminescent property of the Mg 14 Ge 5 O 24 :Mn 4+ phosphor. For instance, by introducing F - ions into the host, the absorption efficiency in blue-light region increased remarkably from 13% to 28%. By further substitution of Ti 4+ for Ge 4+ ions, the absorption efficiency further increased to 50%. Meanwhile, the achieved internal photoluminescence quantum yield is up to 92% for the Mg 28 Ge 5.42 Ti 2 O 38 F 10 :Mn 4+ phosphor under 422 nm blue-light excitation. Besides, the phosphor exhibits excellent photoluminecence thermal stability, i. e., the emission intensity at 423 K retained 96% of that at room temperature. By means of X-ray absorption near-edge structure and extended X-ray absorption fine structure analysis, the effect of introducing F - and Ti 4+ ions on the local coordination and valence of Mn ions in the hosts and the luminescent property of the phosphors are discussed in detail. Finally, LEDs were packaged by combining blue diode chips and Mg 28 Ge 5.42 Ti 2 O 38 F 10 :Mn 4+ phosphor, and their validity for promoting growth of plants were successfully demonstrated.

Bifunctional optical probe based on La3Mg2SbO9:Mn4+ phosphors for temperature and pressure sensing

Zhanglin Chen,Songmo Du,Fei Li,Shijia Zhang,Shuo Zhao,Zhaobo Tian,Jie Zhang,Xuanyi Yuan,Guanghua Liu,Kexin Chen

Photoluminescent materials, serving as optical probes, constitute a significant medium for reliable remote sensing of fundamental state parameters such as temperature and pressure. Herein, we report a novel Mn 4+ -activated perovskite-type La 3 Mg 2 SbO 9 phosphor (LMS:Mn 4+ ) for bifunctional application in both thermometry and manometry. Upon excitation with 341 nm, LMS:Mn 4+ (0.7% Mn 4+ ) emits a bright narrow-band red light peaking at 705 nm with an FWHM (full width at half maximum) of 32 nm. As a thermometer, when the temperature surpasses 298 K, non-radiative transitions from the 2 E g excited state lead to a sharp decrease in decay lifetimes with increasing temperature. This allows for lifetime-based luminescence thermometry with a relative sensitivity of 2.52% K −1 at 391 K. Moreover, LMS:Mn 4+ was processed into a temperature-sensing coating and its non-contact thermometry functionality was validated. In manometry applications, the LMS:Mn 4+ probe experiences substantial pressure-dependent redshift with a sensitivity of 1.20 nm/GPa in the testing range of 9.48 GPa, which is about 3.3 times that of conventional ruby probes. Furthermore, its FWHM consistently remains below 37 nm, which contributes to a high reliability of pressure measurements. The above results indicate that the LMS:Mn 4+ constitutes a promising bifunctional luminescence probe material in thermometry and manometry.

Multifunctional applications of efficient Mn4+-Doped La2MgNbO6.5 in plant lighting and optical thermometry

Xiaoyu Zhang,Langping Dong,Shaoxing Yang,Qiuyu Yao,Baiqi Shao,Jingshan Hou,Yongzheng Fang

To creating versatile light-emitting materials that enable diverse functionalities, a Mn 4+ -activated La 2 MgNbO 6.5 multifunctional phosphor that exhibits excellent comprehensive performance for applications in plant lighting and optical thermometry was synthesized. The crystal structure and luminescent characteristics were systematically analyzed. The synthesized La 2 MgNbO 6.5 :Mn 4+ shows a broadband excitation band spanning 300-500 nm and delivers far-red emission centered near 708 nm, which overlaps with the P FR phytochrome absorption of plants. Furthermore, the enhancement effect of alkali-metal ions on the performance of La 2 MgNbO 6.5 :Mn 4+ has been investigated. The optimized La 2 MgNb 0.994 O 6.5 :0.006Mn 4+ , 0.003Li + phosphor exhibits remarkable improvements in photoluminescence intensity, external quantum efficiency and thermal stability. Its external quantum efficiency reaches an impressive 50.3%, fully meeting the demands of practical applications. An LED device was fabricated by integrating the optimized La 2 MgNb 0.994 O 6.5 :0.006Mn 4+ , 0.003Li + far-red phosphor with a 410 nm chip. Wheat-seedling cultivation under its illumination demonstrated markedly enhanced stem growth, further validating the phosphor's potential as a far-red-emitting material for indoor plant-growth LED lighting. Meanwhile, the excellent temperature-dependent luminescence behavior of the phosphor also renders it promising for optical thermometry. Its nearly linear response trend enables potential practical applications, yielding a high relative sensitivity of up to 3.3656%·K −1 , and a minimum temperature uncertainty as low as 0.0165 K. The results demonstrate that the Mn 4+ -activated La 2 MgNbO 6.5 multifunctional phosphor possesses broad application prospects in both plant lighting and optical thermometry.

Luminescence and temperature sensing properties of Bi3+/Mn4+ doped double-perovskite BaSrGdSbO6 phosphors

Yingfang Li,Long Tian,Xiaohuan Long,Hai Wu,Chaoyong Deng,Weichao Huang

Bi 3+ /Mn 4+ co-doped BaSrGdSbO 6 phosphors show dual emissions under 330 nm excitation. • Distinct thermal responses of Bi 3+ and Mn 4+ enable ratio-type optical thermometry. • A maximum relative sensitivity of 2.02% K −1 is achieved at 473 K. The temperature measurement technology based on the fluorescence intensity ratio has garnered significant attention due to its high accuracy, rapid response, and non-contact advantages. Herein, novel double-perovskite BaSrGdSbO 6 : Bi 3+ /Mn 4+ phosphors were synthesized and their luminescence properties were investigated in detail. Under 330 nm excitation, the BaSrGdSbO 6 : Bi 3+ , Mn 4+ phosphors exhibited the efficient characteristic emissions of Bi 3+ and Mn 4+ ions simultaneously. The energy transfer from Bi 3+ to Mn 4+ is mainly attributed to long-range electric multipole interactions, with a possible dominant quadrupole-quadrupole contribution. Interestingly, Bi 3+ exhibits an anti-thermal quenching behavior, while Mn 4+ presents a strong thermal quenching behavior under 330 nm excitation. Based on the significantly different temperature sensitivities of Bi 3+ and Mn 4+ , a ratiometric optical thermometer with a relative sensitivity of 2.02% K −1 at 473 K was designed. The study elucidates the optical properties of Bi 3+ and Mn 4+ ions in BaSrGdSbO 6 : Bi 3+ , Mn 4+ , while underscoring the promising application of these phosphors in optical temperature sensing. Luminescent performances of Mn4+ ions during the phase evolution from MgTiO3 to Mg2TiO4

Jiaqi Long,Chaoyang Ma,Yuzhen Wang,Xuanyi Yuan,Miaomiao Du,Ran Ma,Zicheng Wen,Jiantao Zhang,Yongge Cao

TiO 2−x MgO: 0.1 at% Mn 4+ (1   ≤   x   ≤   2) red phosphors are synthesized through a traditional high temperature solid-state reaction method. The excitation and emission spectra indicate that 700   nm and 660   nm red emission peaks are ascribed to Mn 4+ ions doped in MgTiO 3 and Mg 2 TiO 4 , respectively. The Ti 4+ octahedron is connected in MgTiO 3 by O 2− ions of the octahedrons, while the Ti 4+ octahedron is separated in Mg 2 TiO 4 by Mg 2+ tetrahedron and Mg 2+ octahedron. This results that the quenching concentration is higher in Mg 2 TiO 4 than in MgTiO 3 leading the less luminous centers in MgTiO 3 . Detailed spectroscopic and crystal-field studies of the Mg 2 TiO 4 : Mn 4+ and MgTiO 3 : Mn 4+ is described in the present paper.

Synthesis, luminescence property, and application of a novel red-emitting BaLaZnTaO6:Mn4+ phosphor

Yuwei Lan,Zihua Sun,Zuizhi Lu,Chunfeng Liang,Liya Zhou

A novel red-emitting BaLaZnTaO 6 :Mn 4+ phosphor is synthesized by a solid-state reaction. The phosphor can be excited at 350 nm, which matches well with the near-ultraviolet (UV) InGaN chip (365 nm) for white light-emitting diodes (w-LEDs). UV–visible spectral analysis indicates that doping with Mn 4+ ions results in broad absorption bands, which allow the sample to adapt to a wide range of excitation wavelength. A bright red emission peak is found in the photoluminescence spectrum and is attributed to the spin-forbidden 2 E g  →  4 A 2 transition of Mn 4+ ions. All decay times are in the range of microseconds, indicating a forbidden character of intra d-shell transitions in Mn 4+ . The values of the crystal-field parameters Dq , B , and C are determined as 1980, 660, and 3138 cm −1 , respectively. The quantum efficiency of BLZT:0.0025Mn 4+ phosphor is 16.1%. The parameters of the obtained w-LEDs are CRI of 81.2 and CCT of 3803 K.

Structure and Luminescence Properties of Mn4+-Activated K3TaO2F4 Red Phosphor for White LEDs

Yang Zhou,Shuai Zhang,Xiaoming Wang,Huan Jiao

A novel red oxyfluoride phosphor K3TaO2F4:Mn4+ has been prepared by a simple two-step synthesis method. The structure, composition, and luminescence properties of K3TaO2F4:Mn4+ phosphors were investigated and discussed in detail. The real structure of K3TaO2F4 was carefully studied through X-ray powder diffraction data Rietveld refinement. K3TaO2F4 holds a D4h group symmetry [TaO2F4]3– octahedron with the oxygen occupying the para-position. Under ultraviolet (UV) and blue light excitation, K3TaO2F4:Mn4+ phosphor emits a narrow band red emission peaking at 630 nm. High-performance warm white-light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) were fabricated using a blue LED chip, YAG:Ce3+ yellow phosphor, and K3TaO2F4:Mn4+ red phosphor. This device exhibits high color quality (CCT = 3488 K, Ra = 93.0, R9 = 90.0), which indicates that Mn4+-doped K3TaO2F4 would be a promising red phosphor for WLED applications.
