Phase-Transition of Mo2C Induced by Tungsten Doping as Heterointerface-Rich Electrocatalyst for Optimizing Hydrogen Evolution Activity

Wansong Chen,Mang Niu,Zhaozuo Zhang,Lin Chen,Xing Li,Jinming Zhang,Ruoxin Sun,Haijie Cao,Xiaoxia Wang

Electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) from water splitting driven by renewable energy is considered a promising method for large-scale hydrogen production, and as an alternative to noble-metal electrocatalysts, molybdenum carbide (Mo 2 C) has exhibited effective HER performance. However, the strong bonding strength of intermediate adsorbed H ( H ads ) with Mo active site slows down the HER kinetics of Mo 2 C. Herein, using phase-transition strategy, hexagonal β-Mo 2 C could be easily transferred to cubic δ-Mo 2 C through electron injection triggered by tungsten (W) doping, and heterointerface-rich Mo 2 C-based composites, including β-Mo 2 C, δ-Mo 2 C, and MoO 2 , are presented. Experimental results and density functional theory calculations reveal that W doping mainly contributes to the phase-transition process, and the generated heterointerfaces are the dominant factor in inducing remarkable electron accumulation around Mo active sites, thus weakening the Mo─H coupling. Wherein, the β-Mo 2 C/MoO 2 interface plays an important role in optimizing the electronic structure of Mo 3d orbital and hydrogen adsorption Gibbs free energy (Δ G H* ), enabling these Mo 2 C-based composites to have excellent intrinsic catalytic activity like low overpotential ( η 10 = 99.8 mV), small Tafel slope (60.16 dec −1 ), and good stability in 1 m KOH. This work sheds light on phase-transition engineering and offers a convenient route to construct heterointerfaces for large-scale HER production.

PtO nanoclusters on ultra-thin 2D Mo2C enhance hydrated cation interaction for superior alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction

Lei Xiang,Difei Leng,Xuming Zhang,Han Li,Handu Wang,Chaoran Pi,Shuangjie Wu,Li Huang,Yun Li,Kaifu Huo,Paul K. Chu

Platinum oxide (PtO) is regarded as an effective catalyst beyond platinum metal for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, slow kinetics and structural instability limit its wide application as alkaline electrocatalyst. Herein, PtO nanoclusters decorated ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) Mo 2 C with a Pt concentration of 0.98 wt% (Mo 2 C-PtO) is designed and prepared to overcome these hurdles. The Mo 2 C-PtO catalyst shows significant interfacial charge reconstruction and strong electrostatic interaction with hydrated ions and exhibits remarkable HER performance with an ultra-low overpotential of 5, 64 and 329 mV at 10, 100 and 1000 mA cm −2 and a small Tafel slope of 25 mV dec −1 in alkaline solution, as well as the long-term durability of hydrogen production at 500 mA cm −2 . In situ Raman scattering and theoretical calculation reveal the fast migration and dissociation of cationic hydration water at interface, which accelerates Volmer reaction. The key intermediates of OH* and H* transfer rapidly from the interface to Mo 2 C and PtO, respectively, which increases the availability of interfacial sites and facilitates the fast Volmer-Tafel mechanism. This study highlights the potential of carbide-supported PtO nanoclusters as highly efficient catalysts for alkaline hydrogen production and offers insights into the interfacial water evolution mechanism.

Heterostructuring the CO2-derived Mo2C layer with MoP2 via molten salt electrolysis for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction

Shuiping Zhong,Tianhan Lei,Licong Liang,Xiaopeng Chi,Wei Weng,Chen Cheng,Ding Tang

Electrochemical fixation of CO 2 in molten salts as carbides for catalyzing the hydrogen evolution reaction can contribute to carbon neutrality and value-added conversion of CO 2 as well as facilitate the production of sustainable green hydrogen energy. However, the functional ability of the CO 2 -derived carbides still needs to be substantially improved. Herein, heterostructuring the CO 2 -derived Mo 2 C layer with MoP 2 is realized via electro-splitting of CO 2 in Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 -containing molten salt. The as-designed Mo 2 C–MoP 2 heterostructure layer presents significantly improved HER performances, namely overpotential being 109 mV @ 100 mA cm −2 and stability for 600 h @ 200 mA cm −2 , greatly outperforming both the bare Mo 2 C layer and commercial Pt candidates. The superior performances of the Mo 2 C–MoP 2 heterostructure are in one way attributed to the modified electronic structure that decrease the energy barrier of the Volmer rate-determining step for HER. In another way, the Mo 2 C–MoP 2 dual-phase increases the hydrophilicity ability of the catalytic layer, accelerating the detachment of the H 2 bubbles. The results can provide new insights for both value-added fixation of carbon dioxide and preparation of high-performance non-noble electrocatalyst.

Tailoring Ni/Mo2C interfaces via sol–gel assisted confinement strategy for efficient and durable alkaline hydrogen evolution

Yao Han,Liang Yang,Xiangyi Luo,Shan Huang,Ting Yu,Yaohui Qu,Cailei Yuan,Manman Guo

Transition metals and carbides have attracted significant attention as electrocatalysts owing to their high electrical conductivity and strong hydrogen-binding affinity, which was also hindered by limited exposure of active sites and instability. Herein, we report a confined heterostructured catalyst—Ni/Mo 2 C nanoparticles embedded in a porous nitrogen-doped carbon sheets (PNCS)—constructed via the sol–gel synthesis with high-temperature annealing. The interfacial coupling between Ni and Mo 2 C modulated the electronic structure and facilitated faster charge transfer, while the PNCS stabilized the active sites by suppressing nanoparticle agglomeration. Alkaline HER measurements revealed that the Ni/Mo 2 C@PNCS (2:3) catalyst operated with merely 114 mV overpotential to reach 10 mA cm –2 with a Tafel slope of 63 mV dec –1 , indicating outstanding activity, and maintained robust stability over 100 hours of continuous operation. This work provided a viable strategy for engineering confined TM/TMC heterostructures and offers new insights into designing high-performance non-noble metal-based HER catalysts through interface-driven electronic modulation.

Anion-Induced Size Selection of β-Mo2C Supported on Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Nanotubes for Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Min Ji,Siqi Niu,Yunchen Du,Bo Song,Ping Xu

Molybdenum carbide materials are considered to be promising hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts due to their similar electronic structures and catalytic activities to Pt-based catalysts. Here, we report a facile synthesis of β-Mo2C nanoparticles supported on nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (Mo2C/N–C) through a one-step carbonization of Mo-containing anion-doped polyaniline nanotubes. It has been revealed that the size of the obtained Mo2C nanoparticles can be effectively tuned by applying different Mo-containing anions. With MoO42– from Na2MoO4, the as-prepared Mo2C/N–C(S) with ultrasmall (2–3 nm) Mo2C nanoparticles shows excellent electrocatalytic HER activity in acidic media, with an overpotential of 189 mV vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) at a geometric current density of −10 mA cm–2 and a Tafel slope of 58 mV dec–1. This study opens up a new avenue for the size-controllable synthesis of transition metal carbide nanoparticles loaded on carbon supports for energy conversion applications.

Preparation and electrochemical properties of bimetallic carbide Fe3Mo3C/Mo2C@carbon nanotubes as negative electrode material for supercapacitor

Rui Yang Hu,Li Yuan Liu,Jia Hao He,Yang Zhou,Shi Bo Wu,Mao Xiang Zheng,Muslum Demir,Pian Pian Ma

The recent studies presented that bimetallic carbide is a potential electrode material for supercapacitors owing to its abundant active sites, high conductivity and high electrochemical stability. Besides, making composite of bimetallic carbides with other advanced physical, textural and morphological materials such as graphene, porous carbon or carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can critically enhance the electrochemical property of the electrode. In this work, Fe 3 Mo 3 C/Mo 2 C@CNTs composite material was for the first time prepared by hydrothermal and high temperature carbonization using chitosan as carbon source and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as a host. The phase composition, morphology and electrochemical features of Fe 3 Mo 3 C/Mo 2 C@CNTs composite material were systematically studied. The Fe 3 Mo 3 C/Mo 2 C@CNTs nanoparticle carbonized at 800 °C shows the optimal electrochemical performance. The specific capacitance reaches 196.3 F g −1 at the scanning rate of 10 mV s −1 (202.3 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 ). Besides, an asymmetric supercapacitor assembled with Fe 3 Mo 3 C/Mo 2 C@CNTs and NiCo 2 O 4 electrode yields an energy density of 39.9 Wh Kg −1 when the power density is 1800 W Kg −1 . Meanwhile, the capacitance retention rate reaches 73.9 % after 4000 cycles. Overall, Fe 3 Mo 3 C/Mo 2 C@CNTs is applied to the negative electrode material of a supercapacitor for the first time, and its outstanding electrochemical behavior indicates the tremendous potential in the electrochemical energy storage field.

Synthesis-Controlled α- and β-Molybdenum Carbide for Base-Promoted Transfer Hydrogenation of Lignin to Aromatic Monomers in Ethanol

Kejing Wu,Chunyan Yang,Yingming Zhu,Junbo Wang,Xueting Wang,Changjun Liu,Yingying Liu,Houfang Lu,Bin Liang,Yongdan Li

Molybdenum carbide catalysts over activated carbon with different crystal phases were synthesized under controllable carburization atmospheres and temperatures for transfer hydrogenation of Kraft lignin in ethanol to aromatic monomers. Single α-MoC1–x and crystal transformation of α-MoC1–x to β-Mo2C are observed under a CH4/H2 mixture and H2 carburization atmospheres, respectively. The mixed crystal phases of α-MoC1–x and β-Mo2C with different crystallinities under a N2 carburization atmosphere exhibit higher activity with a maximum aromatic yield of 0.5163 g/g Kraft lignin when carburized at 700 °C. The dehydrogenation reaction and Kraft lignin hydrogenation are proposed to explain the synergistic effect of β-Mo2C, base, and α-MoC1–x for the base-promoted transfer hydrogenation process in ethanol, which is confirmed by in situ Fourier transform infrared analysis. This highly efficient process is suitable for the conversion of different lignin feedstock.

A Nonaqueous Mg-CO2 Battery with Low Overpotential

Wenbo Liu,Xin Sui,Changkun Cai,He Huang,Rui Xu,Dongsheng Geng,Mingyang Chen,Jun Lu

Mg-CO 2 batteries, which exploit the greenhouse gas CO 2 as cathode active species, are an appealing next-generation battery candidate due to their high efficiency energy storage and value-added CO 2 utilization. However, compared with other metal-CO 2 systems, few aprotic Mg-CO 2 batteries have been reported so far as a result of several crucial problems including the comparatively slow redox reaction kinetics, a large decomposition energy barrier of the reduction products, and poor reversibility in their multi-electron three-phase cathodic reactions in nonaqueous environments. Herein, a rechargeable Mg-CO 2 battery is developed by using a Mo 2 C-CNTs catalytic cathode, a nonaqueous electrolyte, and a magnesium metal anode. The Mo 2 C-CNTs catalytic cathode can greatly reduce the charge overpotential of the Mg-CO 2 battery through tuning the CO 2 reduction pathways. The results of a variety of ex situ and in situ experiments as well as theoretical calculations show the Mo 2 C catalyst not only induces surface molecular adsorption for faster reaction kinetics but also improves the selectivity toward MgC 2 O 4 in the CO 2 reduction process for a higher Faraday efficiency. An exceptional low voltage hysteresis is achieved for the Mg-CO 2 battery. This work demonstrates a promising strategic option for rechargeable nonaqueous Mg-CO 2 batteries for simultaneously addressing energy and environmental issues.

Modulating hydrogen intermediate on Ru@Mo2C/N-doped carbon fibers boosts ampere-level alkaline/acidic hydrogen evolution performance

Xianqiang Yu,Yuezhu Wang,Mingze Xia,Li Deng,Ruikai Qi,Mingbin Gao,Mengxiao Zhong,Xiaofeng Lu

Manipulating the electronic structure of heterogeneous catalysts to optimize the adsorption behavior of hydrogen intermediate (H*) is essential for enhancing the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), representing a key objective in advancing efficient hydrogen (H 2 ) production. Herein, we have engineered the electronic configuration by coupling ruthenium (Ru) nanoparticles with molybdenum carbide (Mo 2 C)/N-doped carbon fibers (NCF) to greatly enhance the electrocatalytic alkaline/acidic-universal HER performance. The obtained Ru@Mo 2 C/NCF catalyst exhibits ultralow overpotentials of 182 and 193 mV at an industrial-grade current density (1 A cm⁻ 2 ) in 1 M KOH and 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 , respectively, significantly surpassing commercial Pt/C and many traditional HER catalysts. The catalyst also demonstrates an exceptional long-term stability in both alkaline and acidic conditions, even greatly better than Pt/C catalyst. Theoretical analysis reveals that the coupling of Ru with Mo 2 C/NCF optimize the H* adsorption and facilitates H 2 releasing. Furthermore, a zinc-water (Zn-H 2 O) battery is assembled to realize highly efficient and simultaneous H 2 and electricity generation, demonstrating its practicability.

A carbon sponge supporting a MoS2-Mo2C heterostructure as the Li2S host for high-performance lithium sulfur batteries

Yuanxiao Ji,Weiye Zhang,Jiarui Xue,Jiyuan Zhang,Yunping Ge,Nan Zhu,Ruibin Jiang,Zhibin Lei,Zonghuai Liu,Jie Sun

Despite their high theoretical capacity and energy density, lithium-sulfur (Li–S) batteries still face challenges such as soluble lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) shuttling and sluggish redox kinetics. In this work, we used a novel MoS 2 -Mo 2 C heterostructure anchored on a carbon sponge (CS) as a Li 2 S host to solve these problems. A simple hydrothermal process following carbothermal reduction was used to construct the MoS 2 -Mo 2 C heterostructure, enabling control of the phases and integration of MoS 2 and Mo 2 C. Structural characterization confirmed the coherent interface of the heterostructure with a precise orientation relationship between the two phases and their uniform distribution. An evaluation of the adsorption and catalytic performance of the material showed that it has an exceptional LiPSs adsorption capacity with faster conversion from Li 2 S 4 to Li 2 S 2 . Density functional theory calculations further confirmed these results. As a result, the cathode had a high initial discharge capacity of 693 mAh g −1 at 0.2 C and achieved stable cycling at 2 C for 500 cycles with a low decay rate of 0.107% per cycle. The heterostructure design, coupled with the macroporous CS framework, effectively prevented the shuttling and increased sulfur utilization, offering a promising way to produce practical high-energy-density Li–S batteries. Mo2C embedded in S-doped carbon nanofibers for high-rate performance and long-life time Na-ion batteries

Li Li,Zhi Chen,Ming Zhang

We succeed in obtaining Mo 2 C embedded in S-doped carbon (Mo 2 C/SC) nanofibers by electrospinning and sulfuration. The use of S-doped carbon not only provides more additional Na + storage active sites to enhance its sodium storage performance, but also increases electrons migration and ions diffusion. As the anodes for sodium ion batteries (SIBs), the electrode exhibits excellent rate capacities of 242 and 96 mA h g −1 from 0.1 A g −1 to 5 A g −1 . Excitingly, the high-rate performance is superior, achieving 102.7 mA h g −1 at 5 A g −1 over 1000th cycle. This project provides ideas for the development the high-rate and long-term stable of the Mo 2 C in energy storage devices.

Melamine-assisted synthesis of ultrafine Mo2C/Mo2N@N-doped carbon nanofibers for enhanced alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction activity

Chen Jing,Pan Anqiang,Zhang Wenchao,Cao Xinxin,Lu Rou,Liang Shuquan,Cao Guozhong

Noble metal-free electrocatalysts with high activity are highly desirable for the large-scale application of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Mo 2 C-based nanomaterials have been proved as a promising alternative to noble metal-based electrocatalysts owing to the Pt-resembled d-band density and optimal intermediates-adsorption properties. However, the aggregation and excessive growth of crystals often occur during their high-temperature synthesis procedure, leading to low catalytic utilization. In this study, the ultrafine Mo 2 C/Mo 2 N heterostructure with large surface and interface confined in the N-doped carbon nanofibers (N-CNFs) was obtained by a melamine-assisted method. The synergistic effect of Mo 2 C/Mo 2 N heterostructure and plenty active sites exposed on the surface of ultrafine nanocrystals improves the electrocatalytic activity. Meanwhile, the N-CNFs ensure fast charge transfer and high structural stability during reactions. Moreover, the in-situ synthesis method strengthens the interfacial coupling interactions between Mo 2 C/Mo 2 N heterostructure and N-CNFs, further enhancing the electronic conductivity and electrocatalytic activity. Owing to these advantages, Mo 2 C/Mo 2 N@N-CNFs exhibit excellent HER performance with a low overpotential of 75 mV at a current density of 10 mV cm −2 in alkaline solution, superior to the single phased Mo 2 C counterpart and recently reported Mo 2 C/Mo 2 N based catalysts. This study highlights a new effective strategy to design efficient electrocatalysts via integrating heterostructure, nanostructure and carbon modification.
