Interfacial CN-layer engineering boosts Mn active sites in MoO2/MnO2 heterostructure for efficient and durable acidic water oxidation

Yesheng Fu,Huayu Chen,Zehao Wang,Dandan Yu,Junhui Liang,Yuexiang Huang,Ismaila Taiwo Bello,Gayi Nyongombe Ekambo,Mokhotjwa Simon Dhlamini,Da Chen

The development of efficient and stable electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in acidic media remains a critical challenge. Here, we designed a hierarchical structure catalyst comprises of MnO 2 and carbon‑nitrogen compound (CN) coated MoO 2 (denoted as MoO 2 @CN/MnO 2 ), in which the Mn species is identified as the real active site for OER and the Mo-containing species (MoO 2 @CN) serves as the promoter. The incorporation of CN into the interface between the MoO 2 and MoO 2 facilitates the inner electron transfer from Mo to Mn, thereby increasing the quantity of Mn 3+ active sites for more efficient OER process, and at the meantime, the presence of CN effectively suppresses Mn dissolution during OER, stabilizing these active sites and improving the overall catalytic stability. The MoO 2 @CN/MnO 2 heterostructure exhibits decreases of 29 mV and 74 mV for the overpotential at 20 mA cm −2 compared with the MoO 2 /MnO 2 and the MnO 2 , and shows enhanced electrocatalytic stability. This work provides a promising and facile strategy for enriching and stabilizing the active species for acidic OER catalysts.

Plasmon-enhanced Hydrogen evolution reaction kinetics through the strong coupling of Au-O Bond on Au-MoO2 heterostructure nanosheets

Zhen Liu,Di Jiang,Linjing Yang,Jiayuan Yu,Xiao Li,Xiaoyan Liu,Lili Zhao,Xiao Li Zhang,Feng Han,Weijia Zhou,Hong Liu

How do the synergistic effects work and which dominate the distribution of active sites, that's an interesting question in mang plasmon-enhanced catalysis. Herein, we put a deep insight into the distribution of active sites and the mechanism of charge transfer at the noble metal-metal oxide interface for accelerating the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) kinetics. A heterostructure of Au loaded MoO 2 nanosheets (Au-MoO 2 ) is prepared by the light-reduction method. EXAFS analysis demonstrates the tight coupling at Au-MoO 2 interface through the Au-O bond. An enhanced HER activity is observed with an overpotential decrease of (Δη) 176 mV and Tafel slop down to 52.5 mV/dec. KPFM measurement and FEM simulation verify the high local field enhancement at the junction. This field induces the concentrated surface charge through the Au-O bond. DFT calculation confirms the upraises filling of Op orbital in the Au-O bond, thus degrading the hydrogen adsorption energy level for HER kinetics.

Nano-sized MoO2 spheres interspersed three-dimensional porous carbon composite as advanced anode for reversible sodium/potassium ion storage

Shuo Bao,Shao-hua Luo,Sheng-xue Yan,Zhi-yuan Wang,Qing Wang,Jian Feng,Ying-ling Wang,Ting-feng Yi

Recently, MoO 2 has been widely studied as an anode material owing to its high theoretical capacity and stability. In this study, nano-sized MoO 2 is successfully fabricated on three-dimensional porous carbon (3DPC) using a simple hydrothermal method followed by calcination . The composite exhibits higher surface area (171.6 m 2  g −1 ) than that of bulk MoO 2 (81.4 m 2  g −1 ). For the first time, the novel MoO 2 /3DPC composite is tested in both sodium and potassium ion batteries . The MoO 2 /3DPC composite exhibits improved electrochemical performance than that of bulk MoO 2 powder. In Na + half cells, the specific charge capacity in the first cycle of the MoO 2 /3DPC composite at 0.1 A g −1 is ∼463 mAh g −1 and a reversible capacity of ∼367 mAh g −1 can be maintained after 200 cycles. In K + half cells, the initial charge capacity is ∼350 mAh g −1 at 0.05 A g −1 . In addition, a reversible charge capacity of as high as 213 mAh g −1 can be maintained after 200 cycles. The synergistic effect of 3DPC and nano-sized MoO 2 improves the electrochemical performance. The unique 3D structure of porous carbon can increase the electrical conductivity and alleviate the absolute stress/strain. Results demonstrate that the MoO 2 /3DPC composite is one of the promising candidates for Na + /K + storage.

In Situ Growth of Mo2C Crystals Stimulating Sodium-Ion Storage Properties of MoO2 Particles on N-Doped Carbon Nanobundles

Shile Chu,Tao Lu,Fanyan Zeng,Baoquan Liu,Yaohui Qu,Yang Pan

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are considered as the candidate for the upcoming large-scale energy storage systems. However, transition-metal oxides still have the problem of insufficient utilization of active sites, mainly signified by the low practical capacity in long cycles. Here, the composite (MoO2@Mo2C/C) of Mo2C crystals in situ grown in N-doped carbon nanobundles (N-CNBs) with MoO2 particles on their surface is designed by self-polymerization and two-step calcination. Through a series of characterizations and tests, it is found that the N-CNBs endow the composite with improved conductivity and reinforced structural stability and effectively alleviates the volume expansion and structural collapse of MoO2 particles. The high integration of Mo2C crystals with MoO2 particles/N-CNBs (Mo2C/C) further enhances the charge-transfer ability and structural stability for the composite. Importantly, the storage sites of MoO2 particles and Mo2C crystals are gradually activated during sodium-ion storage, significantly improving the effective capacity in the long cycles. After 8000 cycles at 5.0 A g–1, the reversible capacity of MoO2@Mo2C/C as a SIB anode gradually increases from 126.2 to 419.1 mAh g–1, with a capacity retention of up to 332.4%. This study fully demonstrates the potential advantages of metal carbides in energy storage and can provide a good reference for the development of metal ion batteries.

Self-limited conversion of MoO2 into ultramicro MoS2 nanosheets on graphene/CNTs matrix for hydrogen evolution with excellent stability

Jingyang Tian,Jiaxin Li,Anlin Feng,Xinran Han,Yuancai Lv,Mingyang Ma,Chong Lin

Current research on MoS2/graphene hybrids for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) reveals that there is still a huge challenge due to restacking and the scarcity of active sites. In this work, ultramicro MoS2 nanosheets with good dispersion and rich active sites are vertically grown on graphene via a self-limited growth strategy (S–MoS2). Moreover, carbon nanotube (CNT) scaffolds can effectively limit the restacking of graphene and MoS2, accelerating the transport of electrons and electrolytes. The synergism among the multi-function structures and composition control can improve the electrochemical HER activity. The obtained S–MoS2/rGO/CNTs exhibits a low overpotential of 159 mV (vs. RHE) at 10 mA cm−2 and a small Tafel slope of 85 mV dec−1 in 0.5 M H2SO4. Moreover, the S–MoS2/rGO/CNTs shows excellent electrochemical durability at 10 mA cm−2 for 18 h. This work supplies a fresh strategy to design high-performance and cost-effective MoS2-based catalysts for the HER.

Preparation of ultrafine Mo powder by the H2 reduction of MoO2: Parameter optimization, reaction kinetic, and its reduction mechanism

Meng-Chao Li,Lu Wang,Zheng-Liang Xue

The influences of different parameters, such as reaction temperature, yttrium (Y) content, and H 2 concentration, on the particle size and morphological structure of Mo powder prepared via the H 2 reduction of MoO 2 , were investigated in the work. TG, XRD , FE-SEM, laser particle size analysis , model fitting, and orthogonal design experiment methods were adopted to analyze the reaction kinetic and reduction mechanism. The results showed that the optimum conditions for preparing ultrafine Mo powder were recognized as 1073 K, 1 mass% Y content, and a H 2 concentration of 0.000576 mol·cm −2 ·min −1 , which enabled the as-prepared Mo powder with a particle size as small as 107 nm. A new interfacial chemical reaction model with the consideration of reaction temperature, H 2 concentration, and sample thickness, was proposed to analyze the reaction kinetic. It was found that the curves predicted by the model agreed well with the experimental data, with the apparent activation energy extracted to be 94.686 kJ/mol. The effect of different individual parameter on the reaction rate and the possible reduction mechanism were also elucidated.

Ni/MoO2 heterostructure catalyst with synergistic active sites for efficient alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction: From active sites to intrinsic kinetics

Fengli Wang,Zechu Deng,Lishuang Wei,Ning Liu,Chengna Dai,Biaohua Chen

One-step hydrothermal synthesis of cost-effective Ni/MoO 2 catalyst. • Kinetic model enables reliable reaction dynamics quantification. • Ni/MoO 2 shows exceptional HER activity with η 10 of 104 mV. • MoO 2 lowers H 2 O dissociation barrier, Ni promotes OH desorption. Facing the energy crisis and carbon neutrality demands, electrolytic green hydrogen is a key energy transition focus. This work developed a non-noble Ni/MoO 2 catalyst for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), delivering 104 mV overpotential (10 mA cm −2 ) and 115.1 mV dec −1 Tafel slope. This is closely related to the Ni/MoO 2 heterostructure. MoO 2 acts as an efficient H 2 O dissociation active site (Δ G  = 0.16 eV), while Ni nanoclusters facilitate OH* desorption, reducing Δ G OH* from 0.21 eV (sole MoO 2 site) to 0.13 eV (synergized by Ni nanocluster). Regarding the H* intermediate, it exhibits comparable Δ G H* values (0.34 eV on MoO 2 and 0.36 eV on Ni/MoO 2 ), indicating H* directly evolves into H 2 over MoO 2 . Furthermore, intrinsic reaction kinetics were systematically studied at 20–40 °C, and an intrinsic kinetic model was established. This model can effectively predict elementary reaction rates and provides key kinetic data for future anion exchange membrane water electrolyzers (AEMWEs) design. In-situ fabrication of MoO2/Mo2N heterojunction on N-doped porous carbon for ultra-deep oxidative desulfurization of fuel oils

Li Yu,Na Li,Yuyao Li,Fang Lu,Ruixin Wang

MoO 2 /Mo 2 N heterojunction anchored on an N-doped porous carbon matrix was successfully developed. • Both heterointerface and strong metal–support interaction modulate Mo electronic states to promote the activation of H 2 O 2 . • Hierarchical pore architecture enables rapid mass transfer. • MoO 2 /Mo 2 N/PNC delivers 100% desulfurization under mild conditions with outstanding reusability. The rational construction of heterojunction catalysts with tailored electronic properties and optimized mass-transfer capability remains a pivotal challenge in oxidative desulfurization (ODS). Herein, we report a MoO 2 /Mo 2 N heterojunction anchored on an N-doped porous carbon matrix (PNC) via a facile one-step pyrolysis method using self-assembled SiO 2 as a template. The intimate heterointerface and robust metal–support interaction synergistically modulate the electronic configuration of Mo sites, promoting H 2 O 2 activation toward reactive oxygen species, while the hierarchical porous architecture ensures efficient reactant diffusion. Benefiting from these synergistic effects, the MoO 2 /Mo 2 N/PNC catalyst achieves complete desulfurization within 15 min under a low O/S molar ratio, substantially outperforming single-phase and bulk counterparts. Moreover, it exhibits broad substrate compatibility (DBT, BT, and 4,6-DMDBT), high tolerance to varying sulfur contents (500–4000 ppm), and excellent recyclability. This work not only offers a high-performance ODS catalyst but also establishes a general heterojunction-on‑carbon strategy for advancing transition-metal-based catalysts in liquid-phase oxidation reactions. Cobalt-Doped Ni10Mo/MoO2 Electrocatalysts as Stable and Efficient Bifunctional Catalysts for Sustained Overall Water Splitting and Alkaline Seawater Splitting

Jiahui Ha,Yiran Zhang,Guanxu Lin,Jun Zhang,Jing Li,Debao Wang

Under the global carbon neutrality goals, hydrogen energy has garnered significant attention, with electrocatalytic technology serving as the core enabler for its efficient production. Developing low-cost bifunctional electrocatalysts is key to achieving overall water electrocatalytic decomposition. The reported cobalt-doped Ni 10 Mo/MoO 2 (Co─Ni 10 Mo/MoO 2 ) catalyst exhibits outstanding bifunctional activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media. The overpotentials for HER at 10 and 100 mA cm −2 are 42 and 168 mV, respectively, while OER overpotentials were 273 and 328 mV, respectively. This catalyst eliminates the traditional two-step process of hydrothermal + high-temperature calcination, dispensing with the hydrothermal pretreatment step. While maintaining catalytic performance, it simplifies the preparation process and optimizes costs, offering a more viable technical pathway for clean hydrogen production. Only 1.49 V and 1.55 V voltages are required to reach a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in overall alkaline water and alkaline seawater splitting, respectively. Furthermore, this Co─Ni 10 Mo/MoO 2 catalyst demonstrates long-term stability for up to 1200 h during overall alkaline seawater splitting. Moreover, in practical applications, a solar panel can drive this highly efficient overall water-splitting process, demonstrating its capability to store solar energy in the form of O 2 and H 2 . Graphical A robust electrocatalytic system with high activity and durability is constructed to optimize the reaction kinetics of overall water splitting, significantly enhancing hydrogen/oxygen evolution efficiency and showing great potential for practical applications.

π–π Electron Conjugation-Assisted Synthesis of a Robust Heterostructured CoO-MoO2 Catalyst: Accelerated Ammonia Borane Hydrolysis for Hydrogen Evolution

junrui Zhang,Nuo Lei,Yunqi Jia,Sheng-Rong Guo,Liuzhang Ouyang,Xuezhang Xiao

Heterostructured multicomponent catalysts can be developed to exploit their unique interfacial effects for enhancing their catalytic activities by optimizing their electronic structures. However, precisely fabricating heterostructures remains challenging owing to the complex interfacial properties and compatibility problems between the different materials. To address these challenges, the carbothermal shock (CTS) method was employed to produce robust heterostructured CoO-MoO2 catalysts supported on C (CoO-MoO2@C) with the aid of the extensive π–π electron conjugation of organic components. Co-based ZIF-67, which is a typical metal-organic framework, and molybdenum acetylacetonate were used as Co and Mo sources, respectively. The strong coupling between the π-electrons of the organic ligands and ultrafast Joule heating during CTS improved the interfacial compatibility between the Co and Mo oxides, leading to a significantly enhanced catalytic activity. The heterostructured CoO-MoO2@C catalyst exhibited a turnover frequency of 55.4 min⁻¹ in NH3BH3 hydrolysis for H2 production, displaying an improvement of 85.9% over that of the single-component CoO catalyst produced under equivalent conditions. Notably, the activation energy of CoO-MoO2@C was 29.3 kJ·mol–1. In addition, we proposed a novel descriptor, i.e., the “activity-activation energy quotient,” to comprehensively evaluate the energy efficiencies of catalysts in designing a low-energy-consumption catalyst. CoO-MoO2@C exhibited an activity-activation energy quotient of 1.89 min⁻¹·kJ⁻¹·mol, surpassing those of most reported Co-Mo-based catalysts. In summary, this study offers an advanced strategy for use in the structural design and precise fabrication of efficient non-noble-metal catalysts.

Robust hetero-MoO3/MoO2@N-doped carbon nanobelts decorated with oxygen deficiencies as high-performance anodes for potassium/sodium storage

Ping Gao,Qiang Ru,Zikang Pan,Jun Zhang,Wengang Xu,Francis Chi-Chung Ling,Li Wei

Hetero-MoO 3 /MoO 2 @N-doped carbon nanobelt anodes (h-MoO 3 /MoO 2 @NC) with long lifespan and superior rate capability were proposed by a simple in situ reduction tactic, in which pristine MoO 3 was transformed into heterogeneous MoO 3 /MoO 2 . The hetero-MoO 3 /MoO 2 architecture significantly improves the electronic conductivity and affords abundant oxygen deficiencies. Meanwhile, the synergistic effect of internal MoO 3 /MoO 2 heterostructure and outer N-doped carbon layer (NC) accomplishes a balance of sustainable potassium/sodium storage and ultra-durable structure stability. In potassium ion batteries, the anodes steadily maintain a reversible capacity of 283 mAh g −1 after 6000 cycles at 0.5 A g −1 and 153 mAh g −1 after 1000 cycles under 2 A g −1 , as well as an impressive rate capability of 131 mAh g −1 at 3 A g −1 . In sodium ion batteries, the anodes purchase a steady capacity of 152 mAh g −1 even after 10,000 cycles at 2 A g −1 , and 190 mAh g −1 after 5000 cycles at 0.5 A g −1 . Moreover, the h-MoO 3 /MoO 2 @NC composite possesses a prominent pseudocapacitive effect and good thermal adaptability (−10 to 50 °C) in both KIBs and SIBs . The results indicate that the h-MoO 3 /MoO 2 @NC composite would be an auspicious material for potassium/sodium storage and other ion batteries.
