The bifunctional efficient electrocatalysts for both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are in urgent need for the advanced overall water splitting (OWS) device. Restricted by the thermodynamic limitations of the catalytic active center for OER and the reaction kinetics limitations induced by the structure of the electrocatalysts , the development of OWS catalysts requires more effort. Herein, a porous carbon-based bimetal electrocatalyst of Mo 0.84 Ni 0.16 -Mo 2 C@NC nanosphere is prepared by hydrothermal treatment of PMo 12 @PVP@Zn/Ni-ZIF which is synthesized via one-pot self-assembled hydrothermal method . Our study confirms that the Mo-Ni alloy and Mo 2 C nanoparticles homogeneously distribute in nitrogen-rich carbon-based materials. Furthermore, the porous structure exposes rich active sites and increases the effective specific area for redox reactions . The obtained Mo 0.84 Ni 0.16 -Mo 2 C@NC catalyst requires low overpotentials of 151 and 285 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm −2 towards the water reduction and oxidation in 1 M KOH solution, respectively, and possesses good catalytic stability for one day. This work introduces an advanced method for the synthesis of the bimetal electrocatalyst.

Biomass electrooxidation for coupled hydrogen production offers a promising route to overcome the sluggish kinetics and high energy cost of conventional water electrolysis. The electrocatalytic oxidation of L-ascorbic acid (AA) to high-value dehydroascorbic acid (DHA) is particularly attractive but requires efficient catalysts to facilitate the challenging two-step dehydrogenation process. Here, we report a FeRu-NC catalyst with excellent L-ascorbic acid oxidation reaction (AAOR) catalytic activity and selectivity. The FeRu-NC catalyst achieves a significantly lower overpotential of 10 mV at 10 mA•cm⁻² and delivers a high current density of 200 mA•cm⁻² at only 0.68 V vs. RHE, while maintaining stable operation for over 80 h. DHA is produced with high yield (~95%), selectivity (~97%), and Faradaic efficiency (~95%). XPS, XAFS studies and in-situ IR spectroscopy reveal that the introduction of trace Ru modulates the electronic structure of Fe single-atom sites, enhancing the adsorption of key intermediates and promoting the second dehydrogenation step, presenting a highperformance AAOR activity and high selectivity for DHA.

Magnetoelectric composite is an effective strategy for increasing microwave attenuation and optimizing impedance matching to improve the electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption properties of microwave absorbers. However, establishing the relationship between the composition, structure, and properties of magnetoelectric coupling materials remains a challenge. Herein, cobalt/N-doped carbon (Co/NC) with multiple interfaces was designed and prepared by a magnetoelectric synergistic strategy. The Co/NC composites exhibited an effective absorption bandwidth of 7.68 GHz at a low filler loading of 15 wt%. At a matching thickness of 3.5 mm, the minimum reflection loss reached −54.0 dB. In the RCS simulation, the Co/NC coating exhibited remarkable radar stealth properties, maintaining RCS values below −20 dB m 2 across all angles. Furthermore, density functional theory calculations and electron holography were applied to confirm that the excellent EMW absorption properties of Co/NC were primarily stem from the integration of multi-polarization and microscale magnetic coupling. Collectively, these findings highlight the magnetoelectric synergistic effect and interface coupling response mechanism in Co/NC heterostructures, offering a viable strategy for developing high-performance magnetoelectric composite microwave absorbers.

Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) hold great promise for clean energy applications, but the slow kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the cathode remain a significant challenge. To tackle this issue, we developed a novel N-doped PtNiCo alloy catalyst (PtNiCoN/NC) through a simple solvothermal synthesis, with N being doped both within the particles and at the carbon support. This catalyst demonstrates superior ORR activity and stability, significantly outperforming commercial Pt/C. After 30k accelerated durability test (ADT) cycles, the catalyst retains 68.7% of its initial activity. At the membrane electrode assembly level, it achieves a peak power density of 0.9 W cm −2 and a rated power density of 0.85 W cm −2 @0.09 mg Pt cm −2 , with the peak power retaining 83% of its initial value after 10k ADT cycles. This enhanced performance of PtNiCoN/NC can be attributed to N-doping that optimizes the electronic structures of the catalyst and the enhanced particle-carbon substrate interactions. This study highlights the potential of PtNiCoN/NC as a highly efficient and stable ORR catalyst, offering a promising solution for advancing PEMFC technology.

A trimetallic (Fe, Co, Zn) nanozyme embedded within a N-doped carbon matrix (FeCoZn-NC-1.5-800) was engineered via coordination-controlled pyrolysis of Fe ions doped core-shell ZIF-8@ZIF-67 (ZIF-8@ZIF-67-Fe-1.5) precursor, which exhibited dual oxidase/peroxidase-mimicking activities. The bifunctional catalyst oxidized 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to form a blue product of oxidized TMB (oxTMB) without exogenous H2O2. However, the addition of L-cysteine (L-Cys) acted as a potent inhibitor, quenching oxTMB formation via thiol-mediated electron transfer, leading to a significant decrease in absorbance and the fading of the blue colour to colourless. Consequently, an H2O2-independent colormetric biosensor was developed with a wide linear range (5-50 μM), a low detection limit (0.569 μM, 3σ), good selectivity and anti-interference ability. This work establishes a paradigm for transition metal nanozyme design, offering clinical translation potential in point-of-care thiol monitoring and biocatalytic system development.

The structural instability and capacity limitations of bismuth (Bi) and antimony (Sb) pose significant challenges for their implementation in Li + /Na + energy storage systems. Therefore, designing two-dimensional (2D) Bi and Sb alloy materials with a specialized structure serves as an efficacious method for addressing their defects. In this work, we successfully synthesized a BiSb binary alloy nanoparticles in 2D N-doped carbon nanosheets with controlled ratios via thermal-drying and pyrolysis. Notably, outstanding performance is demonstrated by the Bi 0.5 Sb 0.5 @NC anode, showing both high capacity and exceptional cycling stability during Li + and Na + intercalation processes. In lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the Bi 0.5 Sb 0.5 @NC anode specifically reaches a capacity of 570 mAh g −1 after 300 cycles at 0.5 A g −1 and exhibits exceptional cycling stability, maintaining 430 mAh g −1 after 1000 cycles at 3 A g −1 . Comparable performance is also shown in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), which maintains 345.3 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles at 3 A g −1 . The proposed strategy, which integrates binary alloy with nitrogen-enriched carbon matrix, demonstrates promising viability for implementing alloy-type anodes in both LIBs and SIBs. This architectural design effectively addresses challenges associated with alloy-based electrodes while enhancing electrochemical performance.

The selective hydrogenation of phenol is an attractive routine to produce cyclohexanol that is an important basic chemical raw in chemical industry, but the design of cost-efficient and highly selective catalysts remains a great challenge. Herein, we report the first example of non-noble bimetallic nanocatalysts for the selective hydrogenation of phenol with cyclohexanol as the sole product. These catalysts consisting of bimetallic Ni-Co alloy nanoparticles (NPs) encapsulated in N-doped carbon matrix were simply synthesized by using our previously developed MOF-templated strategy (Long et al., 2016). The sum of characterization results revealed that the Co and Ni elements were successfully alloyed in every individual NPs that were confined by N-doped carbon layers. Detailed catalytic test results suggested that both the pyrolysis temperature and the composition of these alloy NPs played the key roles in guiding their catalytic performance in the selective hydrogenation of phenol. It has been shown that Co-Ni@NC system was much more effective for hydrogenation of phenol than Cu@NC, Co-Cu@NC and Ni-Cu@NC systems. The optimal 1Co-1Ni@NC could completely catalyze the hydrogenation of phenol to >99.9% cyclohexanol with a TOF of 0.21 h −1 , which was approximately 2.8- and 4.3-fold higher than that of the Co@NC and Ni@NC respectively, underscoring a strong positive synergistic effect between Ni and Co for this reaction. The mechanism study revealed the cyclohexanol was formed directly by the one-step hydrogenation of phenol in our catalyst system. This one-step pathway could avoid the formation of other hydrogenated intermediate product thereby leading to >99.9% selectivity of cyclohexanol. Furthermore, this catalyst also showed good recyclability, magnetically reusability and general applicability for a wide range of phenol substrates, which together with the superior activity and selectivity make it a good potential for the industrial applications.

The aim of this work is to improve the economic value of corn husk, and to make better use of corn husk nanocellulose (NC). Corn husk NC was extracted via acid hydrolysis, TEMPO oxidation and high intensity ultrasonication methods, which was named AH-NC, TO-NC and US-NC, respectively. The NC was carefully characterized by transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis and particle size and zeta potential analyzer. The results showed the preparation methods didn’t change the main chemical structure of cellulose. The crystallographic form of the three kinds of NC still was cellulose I. However, the effects of preparation methods on the morphology and properties were obvious. Among the three kinds of NC, TO-NC had the largest aspect ratio, and the best dispersion stability in diameter, but very low thermal stability. The AH-NC exhibited the highest crystallinity and best thermal stability, but a small aspect ratio. US-NC possessed low crystallinity and poor dispersion stability.

Convenient and reliable tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) detection is necessary due to its harmfulness. Herein, Se-doped ZnMn 2 O 4 /nitrogen carbon (NC) catalyst was effectively synthesized through step-by-step calcination in an N 2 atmosphere, which possessed enhanced oxidase mimetic activity. After Se doping, the oxidase-like activity of the catalyst is 2.75-fold and 1.64-fold higher than that of the Zn-Mn ZIF precursor and ZnO/MnO/NC, respectively. The Michaelis–Menten constant for Se-doped ZnMn 2 O 4 /NC with TMB substrate is 0.047 mM, which has higher affinity towards TMB than other manganese-containing materials. More oxygen vacancy in Se-doped ZnMn 2 O 4 /NC was recognized as the main sites for activating oxygen to produce reactive oxygen species to oxidize TMB. Based on the inhibitory effect of TC on the colorimetric system of TMB/Se-doped ZnMn 2 O 4 /NC, a simple method for TC detection was proposed with a wide linear range of 2–100 µM and 100–500 µM and a low detection limit of 0.88 µM. The method exhibited good selectivity to TC among some ions and antibiotics, and TC in the practical water samples was successfully detected.

It is necessary to explore new energy sources to alleviate the excessive demand for fossil energy. Water electrolysis is a promising means of sustainable hydrogen evolution. Herein, a Cu/NCF precursor was nitrized to prepare a nitrogen-doped carbon-coated multi-component NC@NiCoCu-N/NCF composite material. The good synergistic interactions among the three nitride phases, Cu3N, Ni4N, and Co2N, make H2O decomposition and H2 release more balanced during the reaction. The content and temperature were adjusted to explore the changes in the catalyst morphology and the trapezoidal nanosheets were transformed into a disordered rough coral-like nanostructure that facilitates better electrolyte penetration and provides more accessible active sites during the nitriding process. Nitrogen-doped carbon can enhance the conductivity of the catalyst, protecting the internal active structure from the erosion of the electrolyte and improving the structural stability. The NC@NiCoCu-N/NCF composite exhibited excellent hydrogen evolution performance and the overpotentials reached 89 mV and 131 mV under the current density of 10 mA cm−2 in 1.0 M KOH and 0.5 M H2SO4, respectively. Chronopotentiometry results indicated that the catalyst could operate continuously for at least 48 h and still maintain excellent structural stability. This study has great significance for the development of polymetallic or multicomponent catalysts designed to accelerate the field of hydrogen energy.

In the last decades, aqueous zinc-ions batteries (AZIBs) have attained enormous attention owing to their environmental friendliness , the abundant resources of Zn and the safety of aqueous electrolytes . However, the sluggish zinc-ions diffusion rate results in poor electrochemical properties . Therefore, seeking an appropriate cathode material is a brilliant method to deal with this problem. In this work, the heterostructure of Zn 3 V 3 O 8 and ZnO encapsulating into 3D interpenetrating carbon network (Zn 3 V 3 O 8 @ZnO@NC) is prepared to serve as cathode material for AZIBs. Benefiting from the structural stability of the cross-stacked structure and outstanding electrochemical conductivity of the 3D interpenetrating carbon network, the electrode material delivers remarkable cyclic stability (120.5 mA h g −1 at 5 A g −1 after 2000 cycles). The discharge capacity only reduces 33.3 mAh g −1 with the current density increase from 0.5 A g −1 to 3 A g −1 (216.3 mA h g −1 and 183 mA h g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 and 3 A g −1 , respectively), revealing a super-stable rate performance. Besides, the zinc ion storage mechanism of Zn 3 V 3 O 8 @ZnO@NC was revealed via ex-situ XRD and XPS characterizations. The results reveal that Zn 3 V 3 O 8 @ZnO@NC was transformed into Zn 3 (OH) 2 V 2 O 7 ·2H 2 O (ZOVO) during the first charge process between 1.2 and 1.4 V and the transformation is completed after the two cycles. After the second cycle, the Zn 2+ storage is provided only by the de(intercalation) of Zn 2+ in ZOVO.

Developing electrode materials with excellent electrocatalytic properties for detecting pesticide residues plays a vital role in the safety of agricultural products and environmental applications. Herein, we designed a new electrochemical sensor on the basis of N-doped carbon hollow nanospheres modified with Sn/MoC Schottky junction (Sn/MoC@NC) for methyl parathion (MP) detection. The Sn/MoC@NC was prepared by self-assembled polymerization-anchoring strategy and high-temperature carbonization design. Sn/MoC Schottky junction and hollow nanosphere structure endow Sn/MoC@NC with a larger surface area, more active sites, and faster electron transfer , which is beneficial to enhancing its electrocatalytic performance. The structural characterizations and physicochemical properties of Sn/MoC@NC were explored through various microscopy, spectroscopic and electrochemical techniques. The experimental results confirmed that the calibration curve for current and MP concentration (0.05–10 μg/mL) was available under optimized conditions, and the sensitivity and detection limit were respectively determined to be 9.02 μA μM 1 cm 2 and 8.9 ng/mL. Furthermore, the constructed sensor displayed excellent selectivity , repeatability, and stability, which qualified it for use in detecting MP in grapes and tap water with satisfactory recovery. This work may provide some interesting prospects for constructing high-performance electrocatalysts for MP detection.
