Facile synthesis of N-doped carbon sheets-ZnO hybrids for NO2 sensing at ppb level

Jing Hu,Chenming Yin,Miao Cheng,Tao Wei,Qianqian Liu,Wanfei Li,Yun Ling,Yafei Zhang,Bo Liu

Constructing heterostructure and N-doping are two effective methods to improve gas sensing performance. Herein, a facile novel solution calcination strategy has been proposed to synthesize N-doped carbon sheets-zinc oxide (NC-ZnO) hybrids for low concentration NO 2 detection. The formation of NC is accompanied by generation of ZnO particles on its surface to construct heterostructure. Intriguingly, NO 3 - acts as an expanding agent and N source in the calcination process, wherein the N elements are directly doped into carbon sheets. As expected, the prepared heterostructural NC-ZnO-63 hybrids exhibit 74.9 times enhancement of response as well as high sensitivity (~ 265.8–20 ppm NO 2 ), excellent repeatability and selectivity compared with pure ZnO. Importantly, the measured detection limit of the NC-ZnO-63 sensor to NO 2 is about 100 ppb (~ 0.3) and the calculated detection limit is 2.65 ppb. Furthermore, the influences of humidity on testing NO 2 gas have been researched systematically which would provide guidance for practical use of similar sensors. In this work, ZnO and derived carbon are low-cost, eco-friendly, and the synthesis strategy presented here is simple and repeatable, which provides new idea for mass fabricating other-type metal oxides-NC hybrids for various applications.

Interfacial self-assembly of CoPc thin films with their high sensing use as NO2 sensors

Qiang Liu,Lei Gao,Xingsong Su,Fei Zhou,Guotao Duan

The cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) resistance-type sensors to NO 2 were prepared using CoPc thin films via interfacial self-assembly method. Their sensing performances were investigated with respect to different NO 2 concentrations from 1 to 50 ppm. It was found that the CoPc sensors show excellent sensing performance: relatively low temperature (115 °C), high sensitivity (2.7–10 ppm NO 2 with a detection limit of 1 ppm), fast response and recovery (response time ∼26 s and recovery time ∼34 s at 3 ppm of NO 2 ), and excellent stability (almost the same after 4 weeks), reliability and selectivity towards NO 2 . Further, the sensitivity showed a quasi-linear relationship versus the concentration of NO 2 in the ranges of 1–50 ppm. On account of their high performances, the prepared CoPc thin films via interfacial self-assembly method will provide a high-efficiency sensor for practical NO 2 sensing applications.

Visible light activated excellent NO2 sensing based on 2D/2D ZnO/g-C3N4 heterojunction composites

Hongtao Wang,Jihao Bai,Meng Dai,Kunpeng Liu,Yueying Liu,Linsheng Zhou,Fengmin Liu,Fangmeng Liu,Yuan Gao,Xu Yan,Lu Geyu

In this work, 2D/2D ZnO/g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction composite was synthesized through an ultrasonic mixing and subsequent calcination process. The gas-sensing performance to NO 2 was investigated at room temperature activated by visible/ultra-violet LED light sources. Noticeably, when ZnO/g-C 3 N 4 composite is illuminated by 460 nm light, it exhibits the highest response of 44.8 to 7 ppm NO 2 , and the response and recovery time is 142 and 190 s, respectively. Furthermore, it possesses excellent repeatability and selectivity to NO 2 , and the limit of detection is 38 ppb. In addition, the effect of humidity on the sensing performance under visible light was also investigated. The excellent gas-sensing performance is attributed to the absorbance of g-C 3 N 4 in the visible light region and the charge separation at the interface between ZnO and g-C 3 N 4 .

Investigation of Microstructure Effect on NO2 Sensors Based on SnO2 Nanoparticles/Reduced Graphene Oxide Hybrids

Ziying Wang,Tianyi Han,Teng Fei,Sen Liu,Tong Zhang

The microstructures of metal oxide-modified reduced graphene oxide (RGO) are expected to significantly affect room-temperature (RT) gas sensing properties, where the microstructures are dependent on the synthesis methods. Herein, we demonstrate the effect of microstructures on RT NO2 sensing properties by taking typical SnO2 nanoparticles (NPs) embellished RGO (SnO2 NPs-RGO) hybrids as examples. The samples were synthesized by growing SnO2 NPs on RGO through hydrothermal reduction (SnO2 NPs-RGO-PR), which display the advantages such as high reactivity of the SnO2 surface with NO2, more oxygen vacancies (OV) and chemisorbed oxygen (OC), close contact between SnO2 NPs and RGO, and large surface area, compared to the samples prepared by one-pot hydrothermal synthesis from Sn4+ and GO (SnO2 NPs-RGO-IS), and the assembly of SnO2 NPs on RGO (SnO2 NPs-RGO-SA). As expected, the SnO2 NPs-RGO-PR-based sensor presents high sensitivity towards 5 ppm NO2 (65.5%), but 35.0% for the SnO2 NPs-RGO-IS-based sensor and 32.8% for the SnO2 NPs-RGO-SA-based sensor at RT. Meanwhile, the corresponding response time and recovery time calculated by achieving 90% of the current change of the SnO2 NPs-RGO-PR-based sensor for exposure to NO2 is 12 s and to air is 17 s, respectively, whereas 74/42 s for the SnO2 NPs-RGO-IS-based sensor and 77/90 s for the SnO2 NPs-RGO-SA-based sensor. The results can prove the tailoring sensing behavior of the gas sensor according to different structures of materials.

H3PW12O40 synergized with MCM-41 for the catalytic nitration of benzene with NO2 to nitrobenzene

Kuiyi You,Renjie Deng,Jian Jian,Pingle Liu,Qiuhong Ai,He’an Luo

Developing a new environmentally friendly process for benzene nitration to nitrobenzene has been highly desirable for a long time. In this work, NO2 was used as a nitration agent to replace traditional nitric acid, and different mesoporous SiO2 and their supported heteropoly acid (salt) were employed to catalyze benzene nitration to nitrobenzene. Several typical catalysts were characterized using XRD, BET and FT-IR, and the acid amounts of the various catalysts were determined. The effects of various factors such as different catalysts, the molar ratio of benzene to NO2, reaction temperature, reaction time, HPW loading, the acid amounts of the catalyst and the reuse of the catalyst on the nitration reaction have also been systematically examined. The results indicate that the supported HPW/MCM-41 catalysts exhibit a remarkably synergistic catalytic performance on the nitration reaction of benzene to nitrobenzene. In particular, the 50%HPW/MCM-41 catalyst gives the best results with 73.4% benzene conversion and 98.8% selectivity to nitrobenzene under the optimal reaction conditions. Moreover, the mesoporous structure of MCM-41 was retained under the high loading of HPW. The possible reaction mechanism for the nitration reaction of benzene with NO2 over HPW/MCM-41 is suggested in the present work. This method provides a promising strategy for the preparation of nitro-aromatic compounds from a catalytic nitration reaction by using NO2 as the nitration reagent.

Preparation of zinc oxide nanoparticle–reduced graphene oxide–gold nanoparticle hybrids for detection of NO2

Sen Liu,Ziying Wang,Yong Zhang,Zhuo Dong,Tong Zhang

In this paper, in pursuit of developing high-performance graphene-based gas sensors, a novel NO2 gas sensor has been successfully fabricated using ZnO nanoparticles and Au nanoparticles modified reduced graphene oxide (ZnO–rGO–Au) ternary hybrids as sensing materials. The ZnO–rGO–Au hybrids were prepared by deposition of Au nanoparticles on the surface of ZnO–rGO hybrids by the wet chemical method. The combined characterizations of X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, as well as N2 sorption isotherm indicate the successful preparation of ZnO–rGO–Au hybrids. Most importantly, ZnO–rGO–Au hybrids exhibit good sensing performances for detection of NO2 at relatively low operating temperature (80 °C), such as high response, fast response and recovery rate, and good selectivity. Furthermore, the excellent sensing performances of sensor based on ZnO–rGO–Au hybrids also render it suitable for development of high performance gas sensors.

Enhanced Room-Temperature NO2 Sensing through Deep Functional Group Hybridization in Nitrogen-Doped Monolayer Ti3C2Tx

Zhaorui Zhang,Jinkui Chu,Huashuai Hu,Haoming Sun,Xuefei Zhao,Haiying Du,Minghui Yang

Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is a significant environmental and human health hazard. Current NO2 sensors often lack sensitivity and selectivity under ambient conditions. This study investigates ammonia pyrolysis modification of monolayer Ti3C2Tx MXene to enhance NO2 detection at room temperature. Nitrogen-doped Ti3C2Tx demonstrates a substantial improvement in sensitivity, with a response of 8.87% to 50 ppm of NO2 compared to 0.65% for the original sensor, representing a 13.8-fold increase. The nitrogen-doped sensor also exhibits superior selectivity and linearity for NO2 under ambient conditions. Theoretical analysis shows that nitrogen incorporation promotes enhanced interaction between Ti3C2Tx and its surface oxygen-containing functional groups through electronic hybridization, resulting in improved adsorption energy (1.80 |eV|) and electron transfer efficiency (0.67 |e|) for NO2, thereby enhancing its gas-sensing performance. This study highlights the potential of ammonia pyrolysis-treated Ti3C2Tx MXene for advancing NO2 sensor technologies with heightened performance at room temperature.

High-performance gas sensor utilizing g-C3N4/In2O3 composite for low concentration prediction to NO2

Ruilong Ma,Wenchao Gan,Yuanhu Zeng,Shuanglong Feng,Shukai Duan,Peter Feng,Xiaoyan Peng

The demand for gas sensors is experiencing rapid growth, driven by the increasing need for air quality detection in the face of environmental pollution and industrial emissions. However, the widely used metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) gas sensors suffer from drawbacks such as low ability to predict gas concentration and poor selectivity . In this work, a sensor array was fabricated consisting of 10 various gas sensors and combined with an advanced deep learning algorithm to achieve precise predictions of nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) at low concentrations. First, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) and In 2 O 3 nanoparticles were composited with different mass ratios, resulting in the formation of distinct g-C 3 N 4 /In 2 O 3 composites as sensing materials. Afterward, SEM, TEM , and XRD were employed to characterize the morphology, structure, and elemental composition of the samples. Furthermore, sensing properties including response, selectivity , and repeatability, are studied for 10 gas sensors based on g-C 3 N 4 /In 2 O 3 composites. Finally, the convolutional neural network-efficient channel attention-gate recursive unit (CNN-AGRU) model was proposed to analyze the patterns of the signals collected from the sensor array when exposed to various NO 2 concentrations from 1 to 9 ppm. The results demonstrated the integration of high-selectivity sensing materials to NO 2 and an advanced deep learning algorithm CNN-AGRU enables to realize a high concentration prediction accuracy of about 97.04% and a low prediction error of 0.20527 ppm for NO 2 gas.

Fabrication of Three-dimensional Porous Copper Phthalocyanine Films and Their Applications for NO2 Gas Sensors

Lu Wang,Lijuan Wang,Ziyang Cui,Yiqun Zhang

In order to achieve high sensitivity in gas-sensors based on organic field-effect transistors (OFETs), the most crucial and direct approach to enhance their sensing performance and reduce response and recovery times was through appropriate modification or improvement of the organic semiconductor (OSCs) layer, such as altering its surface morphology or structure. The micro/nano structure of spin-coated copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) films was controlled by utilizing polyvinyl alcohol ordered nanofibers (PVA ONFs). The electrical and gas-sensitive properties of CuPc/PVA ONFs films were investigated and analyzed. The CuPc/PVA ONFs film transistors exhibited improved output and transfer characteristics when the CuPc solution concentration was 75 mg/mL, with a mobility (μ) of 6.90 × 10-4 cm2/Vs. Compared with the spin-coated CuPc film transistors, the mobility increased by 74.24%. The sensors demonstrated the relative response of 12,942 % to 20 ppm NO2 gas. Additionally, it showed the response time of 1.49 min and recovery time of 2.32 min. The response rate reached up to 90 %, while the sensitivity was measured at 611 %/ppm, and the limit of detection (LOD) stood at 0.2 ppm. The research presented in this paper advances the potential applications of phthalocyanine materials within the realm of flexible and 3D-printed sensing technologies.

In situ synthesis of polyoxometalate-derived MoS2/phosphomolybdic acid composites for highly sensitive NO2 detection

Liwei Zhang,Tianqi Wang,Ying Yang,Meijie Wei,Feng Li,Hui Yu,Xiangting Dong

MoS 2 is a promising gas sensing material due to its low resistance and low operating temperature. But the sensitivity of MoS 2 is limited by fast electron-hole complexation. In this work, phosphomolybdic acid (PMo 12 ) was used as precursor. After sulfurizing by one-step hydrothermal method , the generated MoS 2 and unspent PMo 12 can in-situ form MoS 2 /PMo 12 composite nanospheres . The gas sensing performances of the composite were comprehensively investigated. By adjusting hydrothermal reaction temperature, optimized sensitivity (MoS 2 /PMo 12 -240) to NO 2 gas can be gained. At a low operating temperature of 80 °C, the optimized response value to 100 ppm NO 2 gas is 2.466, which is higher than most reported MoS 2 -based NO 2 sensors. Moreover, MoS 2 /PMo 12 -240 composite also exhibits good selectivity, repeatability, long-term stability and humidity resistance. The mechanism of sensing performance enhancement was also analyzed and discussed. As a semiconductor-like material, PMo 12 can form heterojunction together with MoS 2 . The valence band of PMo 12 can capture the holes in MoS 2 and effectively suppresses electron-hole complexation. Thus the sensing performance can be improved. This work provides a new strategy for designing and constructing high performance sulfide composite gas sensors by introducing POMs .

Impact of ternary nanocomposite In2O3/SnO2/F-CDs composition on low ppm NO2 sensing performance

Yi Zhong,Chenhan Zhang,Zhihua Ying,Yuan Jiang,Weiqin Sheng

Nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) is a significant air pollutant with a notable environmental impact, necessitating precise monitoring. However, most existing NO 2 sensing materials exhibit low sensitivity and require high-temperature operation. In this study, we employed a hydrothermal and co-precipitation method to synthesize a novel ternary nanocomposite , In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 nanoparticles (NPs)/fluorine-doped carbon quantum dots (F-CDs). By varying the mass ratio of In 2 O 3 to SnO 2 NPs, we investigated the gas-sensing performance of the composite towards NO 2 . The results demonstrate that when the ratio of SnO 2 and In 2 O 3 reaches to 1 : 2, the 2-In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 /F-CDs gas sensor exhibited the highest response, excellent selectivity , and remarkable stability under ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation at room temperature (∼25 °C). Furthermore, the response of the 2-In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 /F-CDs gas sensor displayed a strong linear relationship with the concentration of NO 2 gas. At a NO 2 gas concentration of 3 ppm, the sensitivity was 238, which is significantly higher than that of In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 NPs and In 2 O 3 sensors. The response time and recovery time were measured at 62 s and 33 s, respectively. Finally, based on experimental characterization results and band structure analysis, we confirmed the promising effects of ternary nanocomposite in enhancing gas sensing.
