Developing cost-effective photocatalysts with high activity remains a key challenge in photocatalysis. In this study, a low-cost nickel phosphide (Ni2P) cocatalyst was combined with MIL-53(Fe) to fabricate Ni2P/MIL-53(Fe) nanocomposites via a simple hydrothermal method. The as-prepared composites were systematically characterized by XRD, FT-IR, SEM, UV-vis DRS, PL, and EIS to evaluate their structural, morphological, optical, and electrochemical properties. The introduction of Ni2P significantly promoted the separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs on the MIL-53(Fe) surface, thereby enabling valence band holes (h+) to participate in alcohol oxidation, as confirmed by photoelectrochemical analysis. Under optimized conditions, the Ni2P/MIL-53(Fe) nanocomposite achieved a significant photocatalytic alcohol conversion rate of 74%, which is 7.4-fold and 2.5-fold higher than those of pristine Ni2P and MIL-53(Fe), respectively. Furthermore, mechanistic studies revealed that valence band holes are primarily responsible for the selective oxidation of aromatic alcohols.

Owing to high theoretical capacity and low voltage platforms as anode materials for lithium ion batteries (LIBs), transition metal phosphides (TMPs) have received considerable interest. However, the immense volume change during lithiation/delithiation process and poor electrical conductivity have greatly limited their applications. To overcome above shortcomings, constructing stable nanocomposites containing two-dimensional carbon and TMPs is extremely important. Herein, via chitosan as the carbon precursor, an original two-dimension nanocomposite of Ni 2 P nanoparticles immobilized N, P co-doped porous carbon nanosheets (Ni 2 P/NP-PC) through one-pot high temperature annealing process was proposed as anodes for LIBs. The microstructure verified that Ni 2 P/NP-PC had plentiful superiorities of numerous microporous channels, surface defects and large specific surface areas, which accelerated lithium ions migration and provided affluent active sites for lithium ions. Meanwhile, robust carbon nanosheets doped by N and P atoms increased ionic/electrical conductivity and released the volume expansion of Ni 2 P. Furthermore, the Ni 2 P/NP-PC exhibited exceptional specific capacity (879 mA h g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 after 100 cycles) and good cyclic performances (423.3 mA h g −1 at 2.0 A g −1 after 1700 cycles). It is expected that the facile method can be popularized to synthesize other TMPs composites for more energy storage systems.

Photocatalyst with double Z-scheme mechanism can promote the separation and transmission of photo-induced carriers effectively. In this work, a novel C 3 N 4 nanotube (CNT)/N-doped carbon dots (NCDs)/Ni 2 P composite photocatalyst was prepared by decorating NCDs and Ni 2 P nanoparticles on CNT, respectively. A variety of test results, including photoluminescence spectra (PL), electrochemical impedance spectrum (EIS) and transient photocurrent responses (TPR), show that compared with CNT and CNT/Ni 2 P, CNT/NCDs/Ni 2 P composite can dramatically facilitate the separation and transmission of charge. Impressively, the CNT/NCDs/Ni 2 P composite achieves a hydrogen evolution rate of 627.2 µmol g -1 h −1 which is well above that of CNT and CNT/Ni 2 P, respectively (no detection and 48.5 μmol g -1 h −1 ). Combining the above characterization results with energy band calculation, we speculate that the remarkably optimized photocatalytic activity was predominantly ascribed to the double Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism for CNT/NCDs/Ni 2 P nanocomposite. This work provides a new member for family of photocatalysts with double Z-scheme mechanism, which is beneficial to further fundamental and applied research.

The regulation of the multi-dimensional interface plays an important role in optimizing the electron transport and gas mass transfer during catalysis, which is conducive to promoting the electrocatalytic process. Herein, a self-supporting electrode has been developed with the multistage interface within 3D Ni 2 P@C nanospheres/nanoflowers arrays derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as template skeletons and precursors. The constructed nanosphere interface protrudes outward to optimize the contact with the electrolyte while the nanoflower lamellar connection promotes rapid electron transfer and exposes more active sites, and accelerates the gas diffusion with the abundant interspace channels. According to theoretical calculation, the synergistic effect between Ni 2 P and C is conducive to the optimal adsorption and desorption of H*, thus contributing to the improvement of catalytic kinetics. With the optimized growth times assembled onto nickel foam substrates, the Ni 2 P@C-12 h requires overpotentials of only 69 mV and 205 mV to drive the current density of 10 mA cm −2 towards hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), respectively. And it reveals an ultralow cell voltage of 1.55 V at 10 mA cm −2 to achieve overall water splitting (OWS). In addition, the stability of the Ni 2 P@C/NF electrocatalyst emerges as prominent long-term stability, which is attributed to the carbonaceous nanosphere anchors on the substrate to minimize the possibility of oxidation of the catalyst surface. This strategy of in situ growth of MOF-derived phosphates provides a general idea for interfacial engineering modification of OWS electrode materials.

The development of new, efficient noble-metal-free photocatalysts is of great significance for the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction. Herein, Co9S8 with a hollow polyhedral structure was synthesized by in situ sulfurization of ZIF-67, and subsequently, Co9S8@Ni2P composite photocatalytic materials were prepared by loading Ni2P on the surface of Co9S8 through a solvothermal method based on a morphology regulation strategy. The design of the 3D@0D spatial structure of Co9S8@Ni2P is favorable for the formation of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution active sites. Due to the excellent metal conductivity of Ni2P, Ni2P as a cocatalyst can accelerate the separation of photogenerated electrons from holes in Co9S8, thus providing a large number of available photogenerated electrons for photocatalytic reactions. It is worth mentioning that a Co–P chemical bond is formed between Co9S8 and Ni2P, which plays an active role in the transport of photogenerated electrons. The densities of states of Co9S8 and Ni2P were determined by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The reduction of the hydrogen evolution overpotential and the formation of efficient charge-carrier transport channels on Co9S8@Ni2P were confirmed by a series of electrochemical and fluorescence tests. This study provides a new idea for the design of highly active noble-metal-free materials for the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction.

Exploring efficient energy systems with integrated energy harvesting and storage toward sustainable power sources is an extremely promising solution for alleviating the energy crisis but nevertheless remains an arduous challenge. Here, a high-efficient self-charging power system (SCPS) by integrating solid-state asymmetric supercapacitors device (SASD) and rotational triboelectric nanogenerator (RTENG) to achieve efficient energy harvesting and storage is reported. Dual redox active sites Ni 2 P/NiSe 2 heterostructure is homogeneously inlaid on N-C (N-C@Ni 2 P/NiSe 2 ) via an in situ phosphoselenization, which achieves the maximum exposure of active sites and prevents the aggregation of nanoparticles. The ingeniously designed N-C@Ni 2 P/NiSe 2 heterostructure features high activity dual redox sites, well-defined heterointerface, and stable superhighway conductive support, which facilitates high electrochemical reaction efficiency, accelerated reaction kinetics, and enhanced electrochemical stability, thus achieving high capacitance and excellent stability. Meanwhile, the SASD delivers high energy density and long lifespan. Furthermore, the RTENG exhibits high output performance, enabling efficient energy harvesting. The SCPS can reach a voltage of 3.8 V within 40 s, and continuously power electronics. It is believed that the proposed survey based on the design and integration of dual redox active sites heterostructure will offer a new prospect for next-generation sustainable power sources.

In this work, ultra-thin Ni 2 P nanomeshes (1.9 nm thickness) on nickel foam (NF) substrate (denoted as Ni 2 P-UNMs/NF) are successfully achieved through phosphidation treatment using ultra-thin Ni(OH) 2 nanomeshes on NF substrate (denoted as Ni(OH) 2 -UNMs/NF) as reaction precursor. Because of the sufficient active sites in edge of the holes, high specific surface area, porous framework and high conductivity of NF substrate, Ni 2 P-UNMs/NF nanocomposites show the outstanding activity for both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and benzylamine oxidation reaction (BOR) in alkaline electrolyte. Importantly, Ni 2 P-UNMs/NF nanocomposites can directly act as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for the electrochemical water-splitting in two electrode system in the presence of benzylamine, which only requires an electrolysis voltage of 1.41 V to achieve the 10 mA cm -2 current density in alkaline electrolyte, accompanying with H 2 production at cathode and value-added benzonitrile production at anode. Obviously, the BOR boosted electrochemical water-splitting provides an energy-saving and cost-competitive H 2 production method.

Developing efficient electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) requires innovative strategies to modulate electronic structures and reaction kinetics. Herein, a ferromagnetic Ru SAs /Ni 2 P@Fe 3 O 4 core-shell catalyst is designed, which synergizes Ru single-atoms (SAs) doping and external magnetic field excitation. Under a 0.3 T magnetic field, Ru SAs /Ni 2 P@Fe 3 O 4 −0.3 T achieves a remarkably low overpotential of 38.9 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and a Tafel slope of 39.5 mV dec −1 in alkaline media, outperforming its counterparts without magnetic stimulation. Advanced characterization (XANES, Mössbauer, EPR, SQUID) and density functional theory calculations reveal that the magnetic field induces a spin-state transition in Fe 3+ (from low-spin to high-spin), enhancing interfacial charge transfer and enriching electron density around Ru SAs. These effects optimize hydrogen adsorption free energy (ΔG H* ) and reaction kinetics. The Ru SAs serve as the dominant active sites, while the spin-state reconfiguration of the Fe 3 O 4 core under magnetic fields stabilizes the structure and accelerates electron transfer. This work unveils a dual-regulation mechanism combining atomic doping and spin engineering, offering a novel pathway for designing high-performance catalysts via electronic and magnetic synergy.

Transition metal-carbon compounds derived from Ni-MOFs show promise as catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) water electrolysis but suffer from limited reactivity and stability. Elemental doping is a key strategy to enhance both catalytic activity and durability. Here, we present an effective approach to simultaneously improve catalyst performance and structural robustness by in-situ doping a Ni-MOF precursor with La. Using a La-doped nanoflower-structured NiLa-MOF precursor as a self-sacrificing template, we obtained a highly active and stable nanoflower-like NiLa-Ni 2 P/C electrocatalyst via pyrolysis and phosphidation.Uniform La doping into the MOF precursor not only promotes nanoflower-like morphology formation and enhances stability, but also tunes the electronic structure of Ni active centres, markedly improving catalytic reactivity. Consequently, the NiLa-Ni 2 P/C catalyst delivers exceptional HER performance: only 167 mV overpotential and 90 mV·dec −1 Tafel slope at 10 mA·cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH. It also shows superior long-term stability over undoped Ni-Ni 2 P/C at the same current density. This work provides new insights and practical strategies for rare-earth-element-based HER catalysts in alkaline water electrolysis.

Rational design of modified separator is of great significance in effectively suppressing the shuttle of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) and hence realizing fulfilling cycling performance of lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs). In this paper, we developed a facile strategy to fabricate P-doped carbon coated CNT skeleton coupled with nickel phosphide (Ni 2 P) nanospheres (PCCNT@NPS), and then we employed the as-developed hybrid as a multifunctional modified interlayer onto PP separator (denoted as PCNPmPP) to face the challenge of LiPSs shuttling. The as-prepared hybrid provides abundant physical confinement and strong chemical adsorption for inhibiting polysulfides shuttling as well as efficient catalysis for accelerating LiPSs converting. As a result, the LSBs based on PCCNT@NPS modified PP separator have delivered a highly reversible cycling performance with high initial discharge capacity of 1067 mAh g −1 and low capacity decay rate of 0.077% per cycle within 500 cycles at 1 C. The promising results demonstrate that the PCCNT@NPS composite is capable of effectively inhibiting the diffusion and shuttle of LiPSs. This paper provides a novel thinking for the synthesis of multifunctional interlayer onto PP separator for advanced LSBs.

Efficient noble-metal-free semiconductor composite photocatalysts are highly desirable for visible light driven water splitting. In this study, Ni 2 P was successfully decorated on Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S as a highly efficient co-catalyst via a hydrothermal method . The chemical as well as photophysical properties of the as-obtained Ni 2 P/Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S samples were characterized by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), Transmission electron microscope (TEM), UV–vis diffusion reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), photoluminescence (PL) and time-resolved fluorescence. The Ni 2 P/ Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S composite sample with 4% molar content of Ni 2 P showed the highest photocatalytic H 2 evolution activity with a corresponding H 2 evolution rate of 1173 μmol h −1 , which was about 13 times higher than that of pure Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S sample under visible light irradiation. The photocatalytic activity of the Ni 2 P/Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S composite sample was stable even after 4 cycling photocatalytic experiments. A possible mechanism on the photocatalytic enhancement of the Ni 2 P/Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S composite sample was systematically investigated, which can provide a novel concept for the synthesis of other desirable semiconductor materials with high photocatalytic performance.

Catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) is regarded as a promising technology for upgrading biomass to fuels and valuable chemicals in the presence of heterogeneous catalysts. In this work, three Ni2P-based catalysts, such as Ni2P@YSS with a yolk–shell structure, Ni2P@SiO2 with a core–shell structure, and Ni2P/SiO2 with a simple surface-loading structure, were prepared using different synthesis strategies, and were used in the CTH of vanillin in an ethanol environment. The Ni2P@YSS catalyst exhibited the highest conversion (85.6%) and a selectivity of 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol of 76.2% at 180 °C for 5 h among a series of Ni2P-based catalysts, which are closely related to the higher specific surface area (462 m2 g–1), acidic site density (2.31 mmol g–1), and stronger metal–support interactions of the Ni2P@YSS catalyst. Besides, transition metals (Zr and La) were introduced to the Ni2P@YSS catalyst to increase the oxygen vacancy and improve the H dissociation ability, thereby enhancing the catalytic performance of the Ni2P-based catalysts.
