Developing efficient and promising non-noble catalysts that can promote both the HER and OER in the same electrolyte is vital. Currently, these reported bifunctional catalysts show only moderate electrocatalytic water-splitting performance, which is much lower than expected. In addition, most of these promising nonprecious electrocatalysts work well only at small current densities (e.g. 10 mA cm−1), but at large current densities their stability and activity are far from satisfactory for practical applications. Herein, we have successfully constructed an urchin-like Ni3S2@Ni3B heterostructure electrocatalyst on Ni plates. The resulting material exhibits great catalytic activities for both the HER and OER, even at large current densities, reaching a current density of 1000 mA cm−l at relatively low applied overpotentials of 517 and 632 mV, respectively. The excellent catalytic performance of Ni3S2@Ni3B/NP is found to benefit from the effective integration of the unique surface structure and the interface electronic structure.

Electrochemical water splitting provides a prominent route towards clean energy conversion and storage, while unsuitable catalysts restrict its application. Core–shell hierarchical heterostructure materials with strong synergistic effects based on non-noble metal elements have been developed to compensate for inadequacy. In this work, a core–shell hierarchical heterostructure Co9S8/Ni3S2@NiFe-LDH electrocatalyst was prepared via hydrothermal and electrodeposition methods. The resultant Co9S8/Ni3S2@NiFe-120 electrocatalyst consists of Co9S8 substrates as the core and NiFe-LDHs as the shell, and exhibits excellent overall water splitting electrocatalytic activity with a low overpotential of 229 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and 151 mV for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and a full cell voltage of 1.62 V at 10 mA cm−2 current density. The core–shell heterostructure constructed by electrodeposition endows the catalyst with outstanding stability and low degradation in long-term catalytic processes as shown by continuous chronopotentiometry tests at current densities of 50, 100 and 200 mA cm−2 for 72 h. The as-prepared core–shell hierarchically heterostructural Co9S8/Ni3S2@NiFe-120 with high-efficiency and good-durability is a promising bifunctional electrocatalyst towards practical applications in overall water splitting.

The development of an efficient metal sulfide cathode is of great importance and an ongoing challenge for the practical application of an aqueous rechargeable Ni-Zn battery. Herein, Ni3S2 nanosheets with abundant sulfur vacancies (r-Ni3S2) have been successfully prepared via hydrothermal reaction and surface engineering, which are further employed as the binder-free cathode of the aqueous Ni-Zn battery. Benefitting from the features of substantially improved electrical conductivity, low band gap, abundant active sites, and good intrinsic capacity, the r-Ni3S2 electrode delivers an impressive reversible specific capacitance (1621.6 F g–1 at 0.2 A g–1) and extraordinary rate capability (62.1% retention under 8 A g–1). Moreover, the aqueous rechargeable r-Ni3S2//Zn battery exhibits a remarkable specific capacity (240.8 mAh g–1 at 1 A g–1) and preeminent cycling durability (only 8.4% decay after 3000 cycles). Besides, a glorious energy density of 419.6 Wh kg–1 together with a peak power density of 1.84 kW kg–1 could be achieved, surpassing a significant percentage of the reported Ni-Zn batteries. The results reveal that the r-Ni3S2 cathode with abundant sulfur vacancies and the adopted facile approach possesses huge promotion potential for Ni-Zn batteries and is promising to numerous electronics and electric vehicle applications in the future.

In this work, a hierarchical Ni 3 S 2 @MoS 2 hybrid structure was synthesized by an effective strategy with a combined hydrothermal route and subsequent annealing treatment. When tested as supercapacitor electrodes, the Ni 3 S 2 @MoS 2 composites exhibited high specific capacitance of 1418.5 F g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 , which also showed a good capacitance retention of 75.8% at 5 A g −1 after 1250 cycles. The Ni 3 S 2 @MoS 2 composites demonstrated 1.9 fold higher specific capacitance compared to the amorphous shell counterpart (Ni x S y @MoS 2 ). Furthermore, the assembled asymmetric supercapacitor (Ni 3 S 2 @MoS 2 //rGO) also demonstrated a capacitance of 61 F g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 , with energy and power densities of 21.7 Wh kg −1 at 400 W kg −1 and 12 Wh kg −1 at 2400 W kg −1 under an operating window of 1.6 V. The asymmetric supercapacitor also showed a favorable cycle stability with 72% capacity retention over 4000 cycles at 10 A g −1 . The improved electrochemical performance is attributed to the synergetic effect of the large accessible surface area and optimal contacts between the MoS 2 and the electrolyte, as well as high capacitance of the metallic Ni 3 S 2 core.

The development of electrocatalysts that combine high activity with robust resistance to chlorine-induced corrosion remains a critical challenge for seawater electrocatalysis. Herein, we report a Mo-doped Ni3S2 (Mo-Ni3S2) bifunctional electrocatalyst grown in situ on nickel foam via a one-step hydrothermal method. In simulated seawater (1.0 M NaOH + 0.5 M NaCl), the optimal Mo-Ni3S2-50 catalyst exhibits exceptional bifunctional activity, requiring overpotentials of only 290 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and 175 mV for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) to reach the current density of ±100 mA cm–2. More importantly, in situ characterizations reveal a dynamic equilibrium between Mo dopant dissolution and readsorption of molybdate species (MoO42–) during operation. This self-adaptive process not only enhances the OER activity by optimizing the reaction kinetics but also forms a chloride-repelling protective layer, endowing the catalyst with remarkable corrosion resistance and long-term stability (>300 h for OER at 100 mA cm–2). When assembled in an anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer (AEMWE), the Mo-Ni3S2-50∥Mo-Ni3S2-50 couple delivers excellent overall water splitting performance, requiring 1.7 V at 100 mA cm–2 and maintaining stable operation for over 165 h. This work elucidates a self-adaptive protection mechanism induced by Mo doping, offering a promising strategy for designing efficient and durable catalysts for practical seawater electrolysis and large-scale green hydrogen production.

Direct urea fuel cells (DUFCs), as an emerging power generation technology, can efficiently convert the chemical energy stored in urea into electrical energy. The urea oxidation reaction (UOR) at the DUFC anode is the key reaction determining its power output. In particular, when wastewater containing urea is used as fuel, the slow kinetics of the UOR severely limit the power output. Here, a Ni 3 S 2 /CoSe 2 -NF p–n heterojunction with a nano-coral structure was fabricated by in situ growing n-type Ni 3 S 2 nanosheets onto p-type CoSe 2 nanoneedle arrays on nickel foam (NF). Mott–Schottky analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy reveal that the p–n heterostructure facilitates charge transfer from Ni 3 S 2 nanosheets to CoSe 2 nanoneedles. Furthermore, density functional theory calculations indicate that the p–n heterostructure modulates the electronic states, significantly optimizes the d-band center, and promotes the adsorption of urea molecules on the catalyst surface. Compared to Ni 3 S 2 and CoSe 2 , the p–n heterojunction alters the rate-determining step (RDS) of UOR from the *CO(NH 2 )NH → *CO(NH)N pathway to the *CO(NH)N → *CONN pathway, significantly lowering the Gibbs free energy of the RDS and enhancing the UOR kinetics. Therefore, the Ni 3 S 2 /CoSe 2 -NF composite electrode achieves a current density of 100 mA cm –2 at only 1.33 V vs RHE, and at 1.35 V vs RHE with human urine as the electrolyte. Notably, the DUFC employing the Ni 3 S 2 /CoSe 2 -NF composite electrode delivers a maximum power density ( P max ) of 27.52 mW cm –2 , and retains a P max of 19.68 mW cm –2 even with human urine as the fuel.

Electrocatalytic conversion of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic waste into formate coupled with hydrogen generation represents a sustainable pathway for plastic upcycling. Herein, a nickel sulfide catalyst (Mo,Cl-Ni3S2) is developed for efficient and stable ethylene glycol (PET monomer) oxidation reaction (EGOR) through a Mo and Cl co-doping strategy. The optimized catalyst Mo,Cl-Ni3S2 possesses a high formate Faradaic efficiency of 94.0% at 1.55 V vs. RHE. Moreover, it maintains 83.3% of its initial activity after 95 hours continuous operation at an industrial current density of 300 mA/cm2. Experiment and theoretical simulations demonstrate Mo and Cl co-doping optimizes the electronic structure of Ni3S2 by upshifting the Ni d-band center and facilitates the in situ structure reconstruction during EGOR. Finally, an integrated acidification-precipitation-recrystallization strategy is proposed to separate and recover terephthalic acid (TPA) and potassium formate. This method offers a holistic approach for upcycling PET waste into value-added chemicals and hydrogen.

The development of versatile oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts for ampere-level seawater electrolysis holds enormous promise for clean energy generation. Still, it is hindered by the competing chlorine evolution and severe chloride corrosion. Herein, the V and Fe dual-doped Ni 3 S 2 /Ni(OH) 2 (VFe-Ni 3 S 2 /Ni(OH) 2 ) heterostructure was fabricated on nickel foam as an OER catalyst for direct seawater electrolysis. The dual-doping of V and Fe optimizes the electronic structure cooperatively, improves conductivity, and enriches active sites of Ni 3 S 2 /Ni(OH) 2 , boosting OER performance at ampere-level current density. The optimal electrode V 0.03 Fe-Ni 3 S 2 /Ni(OH) 2 requires only 385 mV overpotential to arrive 1 A/cm 2 and works stably for over 100 h at 100 mA/cm 2 in seawater electrolyte. The assembled electrolyzer V 0.03 Fe-Ni 3 S 2 /Ni(OH) 2 ||Pt/C exhibited a cell voltage of 1.52 V at 10 mA/cm 2 with a noteworthy stability of 100 h at 100 mA/cm 2 for seawater electrolysis, providing huge potential for hydrogen production from seawater.

Constructing heterojunction is a good method to improve electrocatalytic activity because the heterojunctions can modulate the Fermi level and redistribute charges of the catalysts to accelerate electron transfer . In this study, Ni 3 S 2 nanocones were prepared on nickel foam (NF) by hydrothermal synthesis, and FeCoNi LDH/Ni 3 S 2 Schottky heterojunctions were constructed by electrodeposition of FeCoNi LDH nanosheets onto Ni 3 S 2 nanocones. Electrochemical results demonstrate that FeCoNi LDH/Ni 3 S 2 /NF is an efficient alkaline OER catalyst, the overpotential is 216 mV at 100 mA cm -2 , and it can maintain stable operation for 110 h. The battery voltage of the dual-electrode structure composed of FeCoNi LDH/Ni 3 S 2 /NF and NF at 1 M KOH is 1.61 V at 10 mA cm -2 . The results of XPS show that the FeCoNi LDH/Ni 3 S 2 Schottky heterojunction optimizes the electronic structure of the interface, accelerating electron transfer. Additionally, the enhanced electric field effect at the tip of Ni 3 S 2 further promotes electron transfer in the heterojunction structure. FeCoNi LDH/Ni 3 S 2 Schottky heterojunction exhibits significant OER activity, which provides a method for synthesizing transition metal heterojunction catalysts with low cost and high activity in the future.

Effective and inexpensive electrocatalysts are significant to improve the performance of oxygen evolution reaction. Facing the bottleneck of slow kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction, it is highly desirable to design the electrocatalyst with high activity, good conductivity, and satisfactory stability. In this work, nickel foam supported hierarchical Co9S8–Ni3S2composite hollow microspheres were derived from in situ-generative MOF precursors and the subsequent sulfurization process by a simple two-step solvothermal method. The composite microspheres were directly grown on nickel foam without any binder, and nickel foam was used as the nickel source and support material. The morphology and constitution of the series self-supported electrodes were characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS, and Raman, respectively. The unique porous architecture enriched the electrode with sufficient active surface and helped to reactants and bubble evolved during electrochemical water oxidation. Through tuning the concentration of cobalt source and ligand, the content ratio of Co9S8and Ni3S2can be modulated. The heterostructures not only afford active interfaces between the phases but also allow electronic transfer between Co9S8and Ni3S2. The optimized Co9S8-Ni3S2/NF-0.6 electrode with the highest electrochemical surface area and conductivity shows the best OER performance among the series electrodes in 1 M KOH solution. The overpotential of Co9S8-Ni3S2/NF-0.6 is only 233 mV when the current density is 10 mA cm−2, and corresponding Tafel slope is 116.75 mV dec−1. In addition, the current density of Co9S8-Ni3S2/NF-0.6 electrocatalyst hardly decreased during the 12 h stability measurement. Our approach in this work may provide the future rational design and synthesis of satisfactory OER electrocatalysts.

The synergistic achievement of geometric optimization and surface/interfacial modulation of electrocatalysts for booting the overall efficiency of water splitting is highly desirable yet challenging. Herein, a novel hierarchical Ni 3 S 2 /VS 4 nanohorn array grown on nickel foam (NS-horn/NF) is prepared by a self-driven synthesis strategy. We demonstrate that in-situ generation of VS 4 in the NS-horn/NF not only triggers the formation of such unique hierarchical architecture, but favors the graft of enriched active bridging S 2 2− on the strong coupling interface between Ni 3 S 2 and VS 4 , and thus the enhanced HER kinetics. More importantly, the abundant active nickel oxides for the OER availably form on the interface benefiting from the surface reconstruction of NS-horn/NF due to the partial leaching of vanadium (IV) of VS 4 , which promotes the adsorption of OH − and leads to the fast OER rate-determining step in alkaline media. When employed to assemble an alkaline electrolyzer as both anode and cathode, NS-horn/NF electrode only needs a small voltage of 1.57 V to yield 10 mA cm −2 and retains this activity for at least 70 h. Our findings put forward fresh insights into the rational design of highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts toward water spitting for next-generation energy conversion and storage devices.

Nickel sulfides are suitable anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) because of their moderate cost and high theoretical capacity. Nevertheless, low cycling stability and rate performance caused by volume expansion and inferior electronic conductivity during the charge/discharge process still hamper their development. Herein, Ni 3 S 2 nanoparticles uniformly embedded in N-doped carbon nanosheets (Ni 3 S 2 @C) are synthesized by sulfuration of a Ni-based metal-organic framework (Ni-MOF), followed by coating with polypyrrole (PPy). The PPy protects Ni 3 S 2 particles from aggregation, and is converted to N-doped carbon shell during the annealing process . The nano-sized structure accelerates reaction kinetics and minimizes stress/strain caused by volume changes. The N-doped carbon nanosheets connect the transmission pathway of the electrons, and buffer the volume change during the electrochemical reaction . As expected, NiSx@C-600 delivers superior sodium storage performance with a high discharge capacity of 432.8 mA h g −1 at 0.2 A g −1 over 100 cycles and remarkable rate capacity of 371.6 mA h g −1 at a high rate of 6.4 A g −1 . To the best of our knowledge, the obtained nanosheets exhibit the best rate performance among current Ni 3 S 2 composites. The proposed method for enhancing conductivity and doping heteroatom by using PPy provides a novel insight to design SIB anodes with superior performance.
