The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) hindered by its intrinsic sluggish kinetics remains a critical bottleneck in advancing water electrolysis and metal-air battery technologies. To address this challenge, herein, a Ru single-atom-anchored MoS 2 nanosheet array on carbon cloth (Ru–MoS 2 /CC) is rationally designed to regulate the local electronic structure at the atomic scale. The isolated Ru atoms induce substantial electronic reconstruction of the MoS 2 matrix, manifested by charge redistribution, work-function reduction, enhanced electronic states near the Fermi level, orbital hybridization, and optimized d -band configuration. Such synergistic electronic modulation effectively tailors the adsorption energetics of key HER/OER intermediates (H* and OOH*), leading to markedly improved bifunctional electrocatalytic activity. Consequently, the optimized Ru-MoS 2 /CC delivers low overpotentials of 230 mV at 50 mA‧ cm −2 for OER and 103 mV at 10 mA‧ cm −2 for HER in 1 M KOH. This work highlights atomic-scale electronic engineering as an effective strategy for developing high-performance MoS 2 -based bifunctional electrocatalysts and provides fundamental insights into structure–activity relationships for sustainable water electrolysis.

The development of bifunctional electrocatalysts to reduce the polarization loss is essential to enhance the performance of Zn-air batteries. The combination of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with metal or metallic compounds provides a way to integrate their merits and effectively improve their electrocatalytic performances. However, previous synthesis of MOFs/metal oxides usually involves high-temperature calcination , which makes it difficult to control their morphologies. In this work, through a ligand-insufficient and high temperature controlled solvothermal reaction, innovative NiFe-MOF/NiFe 2 O 4 hollow nanospheres were one-pot prepared without using any shape-controlled agent or calcination process. The as-obtained NiFe-MOF/NiFe 2 O 4 shows better ORR and OER performance than pure NiFe-MOF and NiFe 2 O 4 , suggesting a synergetic effect between NiFe-MOF and NiFe 2 O 4 . The maximum power density of the liquid Zn-air battery assembled using NiFe-MOF/NiFe 2 O 4 as the air electrode catalyst is 158.4 mW cm −2 at 246.1 mA cm −2 . This work offers fresh thoughts into designing highly efficient MOF-derived electrocatalysts.

In this work, a string of different proportion trimetallic loaded the N-doped hollow porous carbon nanospheres (N-HPCS@Co Cu Fe NSs) were successfully crafted by a simple and economical method. Herein, the hollow-carbon structure was formed by etching carbon nanospheres. Moreover, owing to the presence of the PDA and P123, high dispersed nano spheres with mesopores were obtained. By this way, the catalyst can expose unique internal cavity and short transport path. Meanwhile, trimetal-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) Co Cu Fe alloy nano spheres (Co Cu Fe NSs) are first prepared. Creatively, PDA acts as the carbon resource, nitrogen resource and metal grafting agent simultaneously. Through a series of tests, N-HPCS@Co 1 Cu 1 Fe NSs has the best electrocatalytic performance and durable stability. This work highlights the current advances of hollow porous carbon structure, trimetallic active sites and N-doping, as well as, endow high electrocatalytic activity and durability for HER and OER .

A variety of compounds, including Ni-, Fe-, and Co-containing layered double hydroxides (LDHs), have been explored as catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, few can meet the industrially mandated overpotential of 0.30 V at 500 mA/cm2 and cell voltage of 1.60 V, let alone be applied to electrolysis of seawater. We synthesized a nickel foam (NF)-supported NiFe-LDH whose OER overpotential is only 0.257 V at 500 mA/cm2 in an alkaline saline solution and requires a cell voltage of 1.54 V for the same current density when coupled with a MoNi4/MoO2/NF cathode for electrolyzing alkalized seawater. The NiFe-LDH catalyst comprises numerous nanometer-sized crystalline facets surrounded by an amorphous phase, in contrast to its highly crystalline counterpart. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals that the boundaries separating crystalline facets and amorphous phase contain more Ni3+ than other areas. Anion chromatographic analysis indicates that OH– adsorbs preferentially over Cl– onto the sites of Ni3+ of both partially and highly crystalline NiFe-LDHs, whereas Cl– adsorbs more extensively onto the crystalline planes or facets. These adsorption behaviors and the resultant different catalytic activities at high current densities can be readily rationalized by the Pearson’s hard–soft acid–base principle. Because more boundaries exist in the partially crystalline NiFe-LDH, the partially crystalline NiFe-LDH catalyst is not only more catalytically efficient than its highly crystalline counterpart and other catalysts reported up to the present, but it is also stable in alkalized seawater and unaffected by Cl– adsorption.

Here, Fe, Co-layered double hydroxide and polyaniline composites onto nickel foam (NF) (FeCo-LDH/PANI) were fabricated via one-step co-electrodeposition method. The test results indicate the co-existence of the amorphous structure and the smaller size of crystal district with more defects in optimal FeCo-LDH/PANI. Importantly, it is found that there are more defects in FeCo-LDH/PANI compared to that of FeCo-LDH possibly attributed to the local etching of H + released from the polymerization of aniline. Benefitting from the numerous defects, higher electrochemical surface area (ECSA), lower charge-transfer resistance and electron interaction, the optimized FeCo-LDH/PANI needs the overpotentials of 104, 246, 285 and 323 mV vs RHE for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) to achieve 10 and 100 mA cm −2 , and shows desirable stability. Noticeably, the optimal FeCo-LDH/PANI requires a cell voltage of 1.53 V to drive 10 mA cm −2 for the whole water splitting.

Hydrogen fuel cells (HFCs) and water electrolysis are emerging clean energy technologies that can alleviate the problems of environmental pollution and energy shortage. Oxygen Extraction Reaction (OER) is a slow four-electron transfer process with a high energy barrier, and often regarded as the bottleneck of a series of clean energy technologies. In this paper, NiMoO 4 nanorods (denoted as NMO) were in situ grown on nickel foam substrate, and then ZIF-67 nanoparticles were assembled onto NiMoO 4 nanorods (denoted as NMO@ZIF-67). Finally, the surface layers of NiMoO 4 nanorods and ZIF-67 nanoparticles were vulcanized by hydrothermal treatment for 6 h to obtain the catalyst NiMoO 4 @NiMoCo-S-6 (denoted as NMO@NMC-S-6). In 1 M KOH aqueous solution, NMO@NMC-S-6 exhibited excellent electrochemical performance, only 176 mV and 243 mV overpotentials were required at current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm -2 , respectively, and Tafel slope of NMO@NMC-S-6 is 24.81 mV dec -1 . In addition, benefitting from the combined structure of nanorods and nanoparticles effectively prevented nanoparticles aggregation and enhanced its own structure and transport channel stability, NMO@NMC-S-6 showed remarkable stability in 20 h electrochemical test. This work brings a reference orientation for constructing cost-efficient alkaline OER catalyst through structure combination strategy.

The exploration of an inexpensive catalyst with effective oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activities to replace precious metal electrocatalysts has been of great interest in recent years. In this paper, CNT@Co-Fe/FePc composites were synthesized with high efficiency using a self-assembly strategy. In the synthesis process, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were synthesized as the base material using crab shells as templates and honey as the carbon and nitrogen source. CoFe alloy nanoparticles derived from CoFe-based prussian blue analogs were self-assembled and anchored on CNTs, and then iron phthalocyanine with Fe-N 4 portion was coupled with CNTs by π-π stacking. Finally formed a homogeneous and stable composite material. The self-assembly method is simple and efficient to achieve good metal loading. The prepared CNT@Co 2 -Fe 1 /FePc exhibits excellent catalytic performance and stability for OER and ORR in alkaline electrolyte . The overpotential at 10 mA cm −2 of CNT@Co 2 -Fe 1 /FePc for OER is 343 mV with a very small Tafel slope of 43.59 mV dec −1 . CNT@Co 2 -Fe 1 /FePc has high methanol tolerance and persistence for ORR. This work provides a strategy for the construction of transition metal-carbon composite electrocatalytic materials with excellent catalytic performance and stability for OER and ORR reactions.

Enhancing the exposure of active sites and optimizing the electronic structure of the catalysts are indispensable for efficient catalyst design, yet remains challenging in the renewable energy field. Herein, a sequential pyrolyzing and phosphating approach for a well-designed GO/CoTPP gel precursor has been explored to prepare a Co-based carbon catalyst containing single-atom Co-N x and hollow Co 2 P active species (Co 2 P/Co-N-C) for multifunctional electrocatalytic reactions. Kirkendall effect occurring during the template-free one-pot phosphating approach induced the formation of the hollow Co 2 P structure in the catalyst, simultaneously optimizing the electron structure and allowing the active sites to be exposed to a greater extent. DFT calculations demonstrated that the Co 2 P and Co-N x structures enable Co 2 P/Co-N-C to have a suitable d-band center depending on the electron transfer from Co 2 P to Co-N x , which enhances the adsorption of O* and the dissociation of OH* in oxygen electrode reactions, thereby facilitates catalytic reactions. As a result, the Co 2 P/Co-N-C exhibits excellent trifunctional activity with a half-wave potential of 0.89 V in alkaline for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), overpotentials of 330 mV for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and 190 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), respectively, which are among the best results reported to date for Co-containing carbon-based catalysts. Furthermore, the flexible Zinc-air battery with Co 2 P/Co-N-C electrodes also demonstrates a high open circuit voltage of 1.35 V, which is applied to build the self-powered device for water splitting continuously. Our work provides a facile strategy to prepare high-performance trifunctional catalysts by morphology/structure control of metal-based NPs on carbon-based materials.

Interface engineering has been recognized as one of the most promising strategies for tuning the catalytic properties of catalysts. However, building well-defined nanointerfaces for efficient oxygen reduction/evolution reactions (ORR/OER) remains a challenge. Herein, a hollow heterostructure composed of highly-dispersed CoTe 2 inside the mesoporous walls of nitrogen-doped carbon nanoboxes and uniformly-dispersed NiTe 2 outside the mesoporous walls (H-CoTe 2 /NiTe 2 @NCBs) is designed via a ZIF67-involved etching-anchoring-tellurization strategy. Promising half-wave potential of 0.86 V and overpotential of 320 mV at 10 mA cm −2 are obtained by H-CoTe 2 /NiTe 2 @NCBs. The excellent ORR/OER activity of H-CoTe 2 /NiTe 2 @NCBs is ascribed to the synergistic coupling based on nanointerfaces between CoTe 2 and NiTe 2 . Density functional theory calculations confirm that the nanointerface-based electronic coupling between CoTe 2 and NiTe 2 facilitates the charge transfer between two components and generates abundant catalytically active sites at the heterointerface, thereby significantly promoting the ORR/OER activities. This work provides the design principles for transitional bimetallic tellurides as bifunctional electrocatalysts.

The development of highly active and stable catalysts of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays a crucial role in proton-exchange-membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE). Herein, an electronic modulate was used to fabricate oxygen defect-rich and supported metal catalysts AuIr/Nb 2 O 5-x , and it promoted the sluggish kinetics and low efficiencies of OER with the interaction between oxygen defects and the active sites. The Nb–O defect with an electron redistribution and manipulated active electronic state tailored the OER performance. The Ir actively exposed the AuIr/Nb 2 O 5-x -500 catalyst, which exhibited a low overpotential of 230 mV and maintained an excellent stability for 200 h at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 electrolyte. Furthermore, the PEMWE using AuIr/Nb 2 O 5-x -500 as the anode revealed a high water-splitting performance (1.61 V @ 0.5 A cm −2 & 1.70 V @ 1 A cm −2 ). In-situ Raman spectra and theoretical calculations revealed the electronic structure of AuIr/Nb 2 O 5-x -500 and the mechanism of OER processes, which rationalized the improved performance through the synergistic effect of metal–support interaction and defect effect.

The understanding of the interactions between catalyst and support is very important in heterogeneous catalysis of water splitting; however, it is still lacking. Herein, a Fe-based material of rod-like Fe 2 OF 4 is fabricated as the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst . Strikingly, Fe 2 OF 4 loaded on nickel foam support can exhibit high-efficient OER activity with low overpotential and Tafel slope. Furthermore, we reveal that partial ferric ions within Fe 2 OF 4 can leach out into electrolyte; and then the ferric ions are electrochemically adsorbed on the surface of nickel foam, triggering dynamic surface reconstruction to generate highly active FeNi-oxyhydroxides under alkaline OER condition. Further, based on our findings, a promising approach is successfully proposed to prepare a large-size, low-cost and high-performance OER electrode via surface reconstruction on NF with ferric ions, showing remarkable performance. This work provides new insights into catalyst-support interactions, and proposes a straightforward surface reconstruction strategy for the scaling-up of electrocatalysts.
