A PEDOT-MOF/polypeptide modified multi-modal micro-ECoG electrode is proposed. • PEDOT-MOF achieves dual functions of ROS sensing and efficient scavenging. • Polypeptide/DEX enhances electrode biocompatibility and reduces inflammation. • In vivo validation of multi-modal ECoG/ROS recording and immunomodulation The limited biocompatibility of conventional flexible electrode materials often triggers host immune responses, manifesting as glial encapsulation and the overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Meanwhile, ROS accumulation further exacerbates local inflammation and induces irreversible cellular damage. Therefore, constructing a highly biocompatible electrode-tissue interface and developing multi-modal microelectrodes capable of recording and regulating in-vivo ROS concentrations are critical for alleviating immune responses and clarifying the underlying mechanisms of electrode failure. In this work, we proposed a novel modification strategy for micro-electrocorticography (micro-ECoG) electrodes to enable multi-modal neural recordings (ECoG and ROS) and regulations (drug deliver and ROS catalyze). For this purpose, the electrode surface is modified with Cu-metal-organic framework (Cu-MOF)-doped poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT:PSS), denoted as PEDOT-MOF. Additionally, a highly biocompatible polypeptide coating loaded with anti-inflammatory drugs is introduced to further suppress immune reactions. In vitro experiments reveal that PEDOT-MOF exhibits excellent electrochemical performance and detection sensitivity to H₂O₂, indicating its multifunctionality to catalyze the ROS for mitigating oxidative stress and monitor dynamic changes in ROS concentration in real time. In vivo implantation studies confirm that microelectrodes modified with the drug-loaded polypeptide coating exhibit lower interface impedance and higher SNR. Collectively, these results highlight the significant application potential of PEDOT-MOF-modified micro-ECoG electrodes combined with a drug-loaded polypeptide coating, which may address key challenges in current implantable neural electrode technology. It should be noted that, due to partial channel attenuation over chronic implantation and spatial diffusion effects of dexamethasone, this platform is more suited for monitoring relative ROS dynamic trends. Future optimizations will further advance the capability toward accurate in-vivo ROS absolute quantification.

Hydroxyl-functionalized MWCNs and PEDOT are better suited for loading MIP. • The sensor detects pefloxacin at the picomolar level. • Synthesis of ultra-thin tubular PEDOT-OH@Au/MWCNs-OH nanocomposites. • The excellent thin-layered structure offers an efficient electron transport pathway. To safeguard public health and prevent the increase of bacterial resistance, the creation of practical and accurate detection methods for the quantitative analysis of fluoroquinolone antibiotics is essential. In this study, a tubular PEDOT-OH@Au/MWCNTs-OH substrate material was prepared using a one-step in situ oxidation method, with chloroauric acid as the oxidant. Pyrrole (Py) was used as the functional monomer, and pefloxacin (PFX) as the template molecule, to ingeniously design a molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensor (MIP/PEDOT-OH@Au/MWCNT-OH) with sensitive sensing capabilities. As expected, the unique structure and properties of PEDOT-OH@Au/MWCNTs-OH provided the sensor more surface area and enhanced electrochemical activity, increasing the number of distinct recognition sites. Based on experimental results, the MIP/PEDOT-OH@Au/MWCNT-OH sensor showed good anti-interference and stability, a low detection limit of 0.149 nM, S/N = 3, and a broad linear range of 0.002–30 μM. Additionally, the sensor achieved a recovery rate of 97%–103% in detecting PFX in pefloxacin mesylate ointment. This sensor shows promise as a highly selective and sensitive portable detection method for the quantitative analysis of PFX in the environmental monitoring. Poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly (styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS) is a widely used hole transport material in tin-lead perovskite solar cells, yet its photoelectric properties require further enhancement. Herein, we develop a rational gradient doping strategy using DL-carnitine hydrochloride (DL-ChCl) to regulate PEDOT: PSS and improve its buried interface with the tin-lead perovskite. The DL-ChCl induces high p-type doping in PEDOT: PSS, resulting in enhanced conductivity and an elevated work function for improved hole extraction via favorable energy level alignment. Simultaneously, the crystallization quality of the tin-lead perovskite is also enhanced by hindering Sn 2+ oxidation, passivating interfacial defects, and preventing the formation of lead iodide. As a result, a champion power conversion efficiency of the inverted tin-lead perovskite solar cell is enhanced from 18.56% to 21.23% with the open-circuit voltage as high as 0.865 V. The stability of the optimized device without encapsulation is also improved, sustaining 90% of its initial efficiency after aging in a nitrogen atmosphere for 1200 h. This work provides an effective gradient doping strategy to engineer the buried interface between PEDOT: PSS and tin-lead perovskite, improving the photovoltaic performance of tin-lead perovskite solar cells.

Microcellular polymer composites with an excellent conductivity are greatly desired for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding applications, but it still remains a great challenge to fabricate conductive composite foams with intelligent EMI shielding performance at minimal amounts of functional filler. Herein, a novel and facile technology is developed for in-situ creating poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/ferroferric oxide (PEDOT/Fe 3 O 4 ) in the closed-cells of bulk epoxy foams without sacrificing the lightweight and mechanical properties. Via vapor phase polymerization of EDOT monomer using FeCl 3 as oxidant and followed by alkali treatment, the in-situ generated PEDOT/Fe 3 O 4 composites densely pack at the inner walls of closed-cells to form the highly conductive islands. These islands are linked by the nanofiller/PEDOT conductive chains in cell walls, thus constructing the unique “island-chain” segregated conductive nanostructure. This architecture endows the resultant composite foams with good conductivity, outstanding EMI shielding effectiveness, highly effective absorbance (A eff ), epsilon-negative (ε′ < 0) response and considerable compressive strength, showcasing obvious advantages as compared to conventional design in open-cells. Moreover, these functional composite foams display a repeatably pH-sensitive EMI shielding performance with a significant difference of 14 dB, providing a potential approach for intelligent EMI shielding.

Elevated cholesterol is a major cardiovascular risk factor, but current detection methods are resource-intensive. Non-invasive point-of-care testing is promising yet limited by sensitivity, and the blood-saliva cholesterol correlation requires further investigation. We developed an electrochemical biosensor featuring cholesterol oxidase immobilized on screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCE) modified with conductive Au-Ag@Au core-shell nanoparticles and Prussian blue/poly-3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (PB-PEDOT) nanocomposites. Morphological, spectroscopic, and electrochemical analyses (including impedance spectroscopy, heterogeneous electron transfer kinetics, and active surface area quantification) confirmed the biosensor superior conductivity. The biosensor achieved exceptional performance: a broad linear range (0.01–1.0 mM), low detection limit (3.3 μM amperometric LOD; 2.8 μM via EIS), and high sensitivity (57.3 μA/mM·cm 2 amperometric; 781 Ω/mM·cm 2 impedimetric). Clinical validation demonstrated excellent agreement with standard colorimetric methods in human serum and saliva for cholesterol tested in biological compounds and robust stability. A strong serum-saliva correlation (Pearson's correlation coefficient as 0.928) supports noninvasive monitoring feasibility. The anti-interference capability of the proposed biosensor was evaluated against common interferents, including glucose, lactic acid, uric acid, ascorbic acid, bovine serum albumin, cysteine, and their mixture. The results confirmed its high specificity against these typical biological matrix components. Particularly significant is its non-invasive detection capability, which eliminates the need for painful blood draws or invasive sample collection procedures. A key innovation lies in the synergistic integration of conductive Au-Ag@Au core-shell nanoparticles with PB-PEDOT nanocomposites on SPCEs, which significantly enhances electron transfer and catalytic activity, yielding an exceptionally sensitive and stable sensing platform. The biosensor sets itself apart by achieving superior analytical performance concurrently with robust clinical validation in both serum and saliva, firmly establishing its potential for reliable non-invasive cholesterol monitoring.

A conducting polymer based composite material of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) doped with pure insoluble ionic liquid (IL), 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, was prepared through a cost-effective electrodeposition method. A very tiny amount of insoluble IL (less than 15 μL), containing 0.1 M conducting polymer monomer, was drop-coated on an electrode surface and then used for electropolymerization using a homemade electrochemical cell filled with aqueous supporting electrolyte. With this design, the consumption of expensive IL for the preparation of the PEDOT/IL composite was greatly reduced, and thus effectively reduced the cost. The prepared PEDOT/IL composite was found to be highly conductive and stable, and it exhibited a highly nanoporous microstructure and excellent electrocatalytic activity toward the oxidation of dopamine (DA). Based on the excellent stability and electrocatalytic activity of the PEDOT/IL nanocomposite, a highly stable, sensitive and selective DA sensor with a detection limit of about 51 nM was developed.

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) coating is advantageous in constructing flexible sensors, due to its good flexibility, high conductivity, and excellent physical and chemical stability. Traditional solution-based coating methods, however, are difficult to retain the micro- and nanostructures of the substrates, thus decreasing the sensitivity of the resulted sensors. In this work, we prepared superhydrophobic (SHB) strain sensors using a piezoresistive composite made from consecutive vapor deposition of conformal polymer coatings , i.e. PEDOT and poly(perfluorodecyl acrylate- co -ethylene glycol diacrylate) on fabrics using oxidative and initiated chemical vapor deposition methods. Compared with the pristine fabric sample, the composite materials displayed significantly improved initial currents, which are attributed to more conductive paths created by PEDOT coating. The resulted strain sensor displayed great flexibility, large sensitivity, wide sensing range, and excellent reliability. Furthermore, the sensor has been successfully employed to monitor various human motions in real time. The hydrophobic outer layer endows the sensor self-cleaning and durability capacities, indicating possible applications under harsh environment.

MnO 2 has outstanding potential for application in cathode materials of zinc ion batteries (ZIBs). However, the poor electrical conductivity , poor ion diffusion kinetics, and structural instability greatly limit its rate performance, specific capacity, and cycling stability. Herein, we prepared PEDOT-coated MnO 2 cathode material with oxygen vacancy defects, namely Vö-MnO 2 @PEDOT, by Dual-modification of MnO 2 nanowires. The PEDOT coating optimizes the electron transfer capability of the material while inhibiting the dissolution of MnO 2 . The oxygen vacancies accelerate ion diffusion. Vö-MnO 2 @PEDOT possesses a joint energy storage mechanism, containing the insertion/extraction of H + /Zn 2+ and dissolution/precipitation of MnO 2 . This joint energy storage mechanism explains the high specific capacity and the increase in capacity. The Vö-MnO 2 @PEDOT displays a high specific capacity of 400 mAh/g at 0.2 A/g. Besides, at 2 A/g, Vö-MnO 2 @PEDOT outputs a high capacity of 213 mAh/g after 2000 cycles. This research provides a feasible research idea for the performance optimization of manganese oxide cathode materials.

Two amino-functionalized chiral poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) derivatives, poly( N -( tert -butoxycarbonyl)-L-phenylalayl (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene-2'-yl)methylamide) (PEDOT-Boc-Phe) and poly(L-phenylalayl (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene-2'-yl)methylamide) (PEDOT-Phe), were synthesized electrochemically via potentiostatic polymerization of corresponding monomers N -( tert -butoxycarbonyl)-L-phenylalayl (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene-2'-yl)methylamide (EDOT-Boc-Phe) and L-phenylalayl (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene-2'-yl)methylamide (EDOT-Phe). The electrochemical behavior, structural characterization, spectroscopic properties, and surface morphology of two chiral conducting polymer films were systematically explored. They displayed excellent reversible redox activities, and rough and compact surface. Importantly, PEDOT-Boc-Phe and PEDOT-Phe modified electrodes were used to identify 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA) enantiomers by square wave voltammetry (SWV) in sulphuric acid solution. It is interesting that the SWV peak currents of enantiomers were found to be quite different and hence the enantiomers could be successfully recognized but the enantioselectivity was not observed using the common method of cyclic voltammetry (CV). Satisfactory results implied that the obtained polymer films could play crucial roles in the development of practical value and analytical application prospects.

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) is one of the most successful conductive polymers that recently has been used in wearable sensors for human health monitoring. In this work, we prepared a series of PEDOT hybrids consisting of PEDOT, sodium poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSSNa) and polyethylene oxide (PEO), and their preparation could be scaled-up via an adapted solid-state polymerization process. The resistance of the as-prepared PEDOT:PSS/PEO hybrid shows clear temperature response, i.e. , it decreases almost linearly with the temperature increase. To understand this phenomenon, the in situ synchrotron radiation wide- and small-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS/SAXS) characterizations were undertaken to study the temperature-dependent microstructure change of the PEDOT:PSS/PEO hybrid. It demonstrated that PEDOT formed conductive paths in the hybrids, which were not destroyed by the PEO crystallization. As temperature increased, the PEO crystals’ melting and the accompanying reorganization of PEDOT chains endowed the hybrid sample temperature responsiveness. Based on these fundamental knowledges, the hybrid materials were used to fabricate flexible wearable sensor that showing temperature sensing performance with an accuracy of 1 °C. These findings shed lights on the scalable manufacturing of wearable sensors for body temperature monitoring.

In this work, post-treatment-free polymer hybrids, consisting of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) and ionic liquids (ILs), were fabricated for the thermoelectric (TE) application. By optimizing the ILs’ molar concentration (0–0.5 M) and chemical composition, that is varying the cyano-based anions coupled with 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium cations, a high TE performance (power factor of 190 μW m −1 K −2 ) was achieved. The excellent TE performance was attributed to the conductive network under the coupling effect of molecular structure (such as oxidation level, conformation and crystallization of PEDOT chains) and microstructure (long-range ordered conductive paths). Especially, the long-range conductive paths were proved to be made of rod-like microdomains, based on detailed structure analysis with micro-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering. These paths enabled carrier transport among microdomains of PEDOT:PSS/IL hybrids. Moreover, the conductive network of PEDOT:PSS/IL hybrids showed good environmental and mechanical stability, enabling the fabrication of flexible TE generators.

A dual-mode electrochemical biosensor for acetamiprid detection was proposed for the first time based on carbon quantum dots/Prussian blue (CQDs/PB)-functionalized poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiphene) (PEDOT) nanocomposite. The nanocomposite with spherical stacking nanostructure showed high surface area, excellent catalytic ability, and cycling stability. The biosensor can be effortlessly constructed after the immobilization of acetamiprid aptamer. The concentration of acetamiprid can be determined by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) based on its signal change deduced from the pristine PB. With the capture of acetamiprid, the response current (I-T) signal generated by hydrogen peroxide catalysis from the biosensor can also been used to establish the method for monitoring acetamiprid. The dual-mode biosensor showed a wide linear range from 10 −12 g mL −1 to 10 −6 g mL −1 , low detection limits of 6.84 × 10 −13 g mL −1 and 4.99 × 10 −13 g mL −1 , and ultrafast detection time of 25 s and 5 s through DPV and I-T mode, respectively. The biosensor possessed excellent selectivity and stability. More importantly, the biosensor was successfully applied to detect acetamiprid residues in vegetables, proving a promising approach for routine detection of pesticide in real samples. Graphical abstract The biosensor based on PEDOT/CQDs/PB for acetamiprid can be effortlessly constructed through both the increase of differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) signal change deduced by the pristine PB and the decrease of the response current (I-T) signal of the reduction of hydrogen peroxide catalyzed by PEDOT/CQDs/PB.
