Hypercrosslinked polymers incorporated with imidazolium salts for enhancing CO2 capture

Lingling Hu,Huagang Ni,Xiaolong Chen,Lele Wang,Ying Wei,Tengfei Jiang,Yaohong Lü,Xiaolin Lu,Peng Ye

Hypercrosslinked polymers (ILHCPs) incorporated with imidazolium salts were prepared using 4-vinylbenzyl chloride, divinylbenzene, and imidazole ionic liquid monomers with various alkyl groups and anions by free radical copolymerization and Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction. The structures of ILHCPs were characterized by using FT-IR, solid state 13 C CP/MAS NMR spectroscopy, TGA, and gas adsorption. ILHCPs exhibit excellent capability of CO 2 adsorption compared with that of nonfunctional hypercrosslinked polymers (HCPs), although both the BET surface area (447–667 m 2 /g) and pore volume (0.24–0.28 cm 3 /g) of ILHCPs are less than HCPs. The synergistic effect from mirco/mesopore structures and imidazolium salts are proved to play a key role in enhancing the CO 2 adsorption capability and selectivity over other gases for ILHCPs. It can be found that the imidazolium salts content in HCPs is more important compared with the pore texture for adsorbing CO 2 . An optimal molar content of imidazolium salts groups is found to be 10.5% with the maximum CO 2 uptake capability of 7.56 wt% and best CO 2 adsorption selectivity (CO 2 /N 2 ) of 47.9/1 (273 K, 1 bar), while those of the HCPs are only 5.93 wt% and 27.9/1. Such results strongly suggest that ILHCPs can be promising applied in selective CO 2 separation. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 56:573–582, 2016. © 2016 Society of Plastics Engineers

Preparation of Poly(Ether Ketone Ketone) Powders for Powder Bed Fusion via Cryogenic Milling and Thermally Induced Phase Separation

Jiawei Li,Kexu Zhang,Dongming Zou,Binling Chen

Poly(ether ketone ketone) (PEKK) is a high-performance thermoplastic with significant potential for laser-based powder bed fusion (L-PBF), but the preparation of powders with suitable morphology, flowability, and thermal stability remains challenging. In this study, cryogenic milling and thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) were compared as two routes for producing PEKK powders for L-PBF applications. Cryogenic milling effectively preserved the chemical and thermal integrity of PEKK and reduced the median particle size to 23.3–36.4 μm. However, the resulting powders showed irregular particle morphology, broad size distribution, and a high proportion of fine particles, which may restrict powder spreading and layer uniformity. By contrast, TIPS provided improved control over powder morphology. Under optimized conditions, particularly 7 wt.% PEKK and holding temperatures of 225°C–250°C, near-spherical particles with smooth surfaces were obtained. The TIPS-derived powders exhibited Dv(50) values of 15.3–26.0 μm, suggesting potential for fine-feature L-PBF, although further optimization is required to reduce fine-particle content and improve flowability. Post-processing by sieving and adding 1 wt.% hydrophobic fumed silica increased bulk density and reduced the angle of repose to 35.97°. DSC and FTIR results confirmed that both methods retained the intrinsic melting behavior and chemical structure of PEKK. Overall, TIPS is demonstrated as a promising and tunable route for preparing PEKK powders for advanced polymer powder bed fusion. Highlights The TIPS method prepares PEKK powder with good circularity. TIPS enables precise control of particle morphology and size for L-PBF applications. Cryogenic milling preserves chemical and thermal integrity of PEKK. Screening and flow aid addition improves powder density and flowability.

Preparation and Characterization of Novel Fluorine-Free Superhydrophobic Antibacterial Composite Particles

Shuai Yuan,Shuo Chen,Qing Bian

To overcome the limitations of insufficient antibacterial activity and high fluorine content commonly found in conventional superhydrophobic materials, novel fluorine-free superhydrophobic antibacterial composite particles were designed and synthesized via a facile method using polydopamine (PDA) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) as the core components. By virtue of the mucin-mimetic surface characteristics of PDA, silver nanoparticles can be firmly anchored onto its surface, thereby constructing a hierarchical micro/nanostructure. Hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS) was subsequently used for surface modification, during which long-chain alkyl groups were grafted onto the composite surface to lower its surface energy. The surface morphology, internal structure, elemental composition, and wettability of the as-prepared composite particles were systematically characterized. In addition, the influences of silver nanoparticle loading and modifier dosage on the water contact angle (WCA) of the composites were systematically investigated. The HDTMS-modified, fluorine-free superhydrophobic antibacterial composite particles exhibit exceptional hydrophobicity, with a maximum WCA of 161.6° and a sliding angle (SA) of only 1.9°, as well as an outstanding bacteriostatic efficiency of 99.99%. Notably, these composite particles can be stably immobilized onto diverse substrates such as glass slides, paper, and copper meshes, endowing them with broad application potential in self-cleaning, oil–water separation, and corrosion protection. Highlights Modified composite particles exhibit superhydrophobicity (WCA 161.6°, SA 1.9°). Modified composite particles possess antibacterial efficiency of 99.99%. Functionalized copper mesh achieves a corrosion inhibition efficiency of 92.3%.

Polyimide/Internally Methyl-Modified Porous Silica Composites With Low Dielectric Loss for High-Frequency Communications

Yujie You,Kun Peng,Qinhao Wu,Kehan Qu,Yaqin Fu,Yinsong Si

Polyimide (PI) composites with simultaneous low dielectric constant ( D k ) and dissipation factor ( D f ) are highly desirable for high-frequency communications. Conventional porous or hollow silica (SiO 2 ) fillers effectively reduce the dielectric constant but often suffer from incomplete removal of internal silanol groups and require pore-sealing processes, which compromise dielectric performance and increase processing complexity. Herein, mesoporous foam silica (MFS) with an interconnected mesoporous structure was methyl-modified to remove the silanol groups (Si  OH) from both the outer and inner surface. The obtained internally methyl-modified porous silica (MFSM) retaining amount of air was then dispersed into a polyamic acid (PAA) solution to fabricate PI/MFSM composite films. Owing to the improved compatibility between MFSM and PI, together with reduced polar groups in MFSM, the resulting PI/MFSM composite films simultaneously exhibit a low D k of 2.324 and a low D f of 0.0097 at 10 GHz, along with experimental D k values well matched with the theoretical predictions. Besides, the PI/MFSM composites also demonstrate an outstanding thermal stability ( T d5% = 573°C, T max = 603°C), a much lower coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE = 26.9 ppm/°C) matched with copper substrates, a good tensile strength (29.5 MPa) and breakdown strength (96.7 kV/mm), and a high MFSM loadings of up to 45.31 vol%. This work provides a feasible structural design strategy for developing low-dielectric PI composites for high-frequency communication applications. Highlights Internal polar (Si  OH) groups in MFSM are efficiently removed by methylation. Air introduced by MFSM effectively lowers the D k of PI/MFSM composites. Uniform MFSM dispersion in PI preserves composite flexibility.

Synthesis of Polyimide Films With High Strength and Toughness Utilizing the Synergistic Effect of Coordination Interaction and Hydrogen Bonds Strategy

Bo Mu,Wei Li,Yunpeng Li,Wenyi Zhang,Bangrui Kou,Baoping Yang,Junhong Guo,Li Chen,Li Tian,Haijiao Xie

In this work, a 2,6-pyridine dicarboxylic hydrazide (PDDH) monomer was incorporated into polyimide (PI) to fabricate PDDH-Co-PI films featuring a dual physical cross-linked network based on metal–ligand coordination and intermolecular hydrogen bonding, as validated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Formation of the coordination complexes and hydrogen bonds within the PI backbone altered the molecular chain conformation and aggregation state, leading to enhanced intermolecular interactions and tighter chain packing. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed a significant increase in the chain packing coefficient ( K ) and a reduction in interchain spacing ( d ). Consequently, PDDH-Co-PI exhibited markedly improved mechanical properties: tensile strength increased by 27.57% ± 0.82%, Young's modulus by 72.19% ± 3.90%, and fracture energy rose from 24.75 to 55.83 MJ·m −3 (an enhancement of 125.56% versus pure PI). The volumetric wear rate decreased from 26.92 × 10 −6 to 5.284 × 10 −6 mm 3 N −1 m −1 , representing an 80.4% reduction. These results demonstrate that the synergistic effect of coordination crosslinking and hydrogen bonding yields high-strength, high-toughness and wear-resistant PI films, providing a new strategy for the design and application of high-performance polyimide materials. Highlights PDDH monomer results in collectively H-bonding/coordination cross-linked PI. Dual cross-linking yields tough and strong PDDH-Co-PI films. PDDH-Co-PI film demonstrates excellent wear reduction performance.

High-Performance PVA-Based Active Packaging Coatings: Synergistic Silica Aerogel and Nanoparticles Embedded With Antioxidants

Ziyan Song,Menghan Zhao,Wei Peng,Beibo Zhang,Jiali Wang,Zhi Chen,Tian Deng,Luoxin Wang,Hua Wang,Jianying Yu

The development of high-performance biodegradable active packaging materials is essential for reducing environmental impact while improving food preservation. In this study, a synergistic polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based coating system was developed by incorporating structurally engineered antioxidant-loaded silica particles. Two types of functional carriers were synthesized through a surfactant-free self-assembly strategy: (i) BHT-loaded silica nanocapsules (BHT@SiO 2 -NC) with dense core–shell structures derived from Ph8-PEOS, and (ii) BHA-loaded silica aerogel microparticles (BHA@SiO 2 -AP) with porous spherical architectures derived from Ph8-PEG6-PEOS. The selection of organosilicon precursors was guided by the distinct melting points of BHT and BHA, enabling optimized encapsulation and controlled release behavior. The particles were incorporated into the PVA matrix at loadings of 25–75 wt% to form composite coatings. Structural characterization confirmed well-defined nanocapsules and highly porous aerogel networks. BET analysis revealed that aerogel particles possessed high surface area, which decreased after BHA loading due to pore occupation, whereas the dense-shell nanocapsules exhibited the lowest surface area. The BHA@SiO 2 -AP system significantly reinforced the PVA matrix, increasing fracture stress and elongation at break by 79.8% and 61.3% at 25 wt%, while also enabling tunable air permeability from 1.2 to 42.52 L·m −2 ·s −1 . In contrast, BHT@SiO 2 -NC primarily functioned as a controlled antioxidant carrier with limited influence on mechanical and barrier properties. Importantly, sustained antioxidant activity over 14 days was achieved through complementary mechanisms: release-adsorption synergy from porous BHA aerogels and diffusion-controlled release from BHT nanocapsules. This study demonstrates a versatile strategy for engineering multifunctional biodegradable coatings with tunable mechanical performance, gas permeability, and controlled antioxidant release for advanced food packaging applications. Highlights Architecturally distinct silica particles enable multifunctional PVA coatings. Aerogel microparticles enhance strength and toughness simultaneously. Particle architecture governs structure–property–function relationships. Dual release–adsorption mechanism improves antioxidant efficiency. Nanocapsules provide sustained, diffusion-controlled antioxidant release.

Poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid)-Based Biodegradable Thermoplastic Elastomers: Tunable Mechanical and Degradation Properties

Qianqian Qi,Fuhao Zhu,Mingyu Zhang,Qingguo Wang

Poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) is a widely used biodegradable polyester; however, its inherently glassy nature limits its applicability in systems requiring large and reversible deformation. In this work, segmented PLGA-based biodegradable thermoplastic elastomers (BTPE PLGA ) were developed by incorporating highly flexible, amorphous aliphatic polyester soft segments with a low glass transition temperature (≈−55°C) through chain extension with hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI). The resulting materials exhibit microphase-separated morphologies characterized by distinct glass transitions associated with soft- and PLGA-rich domains. By varying the PLGA/soft-segment ratio, mechanical properties can be systematically tuned, with tensile strengths ranging from approximately 5 to 15 MPa and elongations at break exceeding 900% at intermediate compositions. Cyclic tensile tests demonstrate elastic recovery above 90% under repeated loading. Dynamic mechanical analysis reveals composition-dependent modulus and a stable rubbery plateau region. Enzymatic degradation studies further show that the mass-loss behavior can be regulated through segmental composition while maintaining the thermoplastic elastomer characteristics. These results demonstrate that segmented structural design provides an effective strategy for balancing elasticity and degradation behavior in PLGA-based thermoplastic elastomers. Highlights Segmented PLGA-based thermoplastic elastomers developed. Hard/soft segment ratio governs mechanical performance. Tensile strength tunable from 5 to 15 MPa. Elongation exceeded 900% with stable elastic recovery. Degradation behavior regulated by segment composition.

Molecular Insights Into the Barrier and Reinforcement Mechanisms of HNBR/SWCNT Composites: A Combined Experimental and Molecular Dynamics Study

Ke Yang,Longjun Cheng,Hongxing Zhang,Chao Yu,Qionghai Chen,Qingli Cheng

To develop high-performance sealing materials for harsh high-temperature and high-pressure oil-gas environments in tank breather valves, this study incorporated single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) into hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber (HNBR). The systematic investigation of SWCNT content (0–2 phr) revealed that at a critical 2 phr loading, SWCNTs can significantly accelerate vulcanization (t90 reduced by 12.6%), enhancing crosslink density (17.7%) and modulus (141%), while reducing gas permeability by over 50% and suppressing oil-swelling (18%) and thermal-oxidative aging (99.4% tear strength retention). Molecular dynamics simulations elucidated the mechanism: strong interfacial interaction (~128 eV) restricts polymer chain motion (MSD reduced 36%), fundamentally inhibiting molecular diffusion (oil diffusion coefficient reduced > 60%). This work provides critical formulation and theoretical guidance for designing extreme-environment rubber seals. Highlights SWCNT enhances mechanical properties and reduces gas permeability of rubber. SWCNT suppresses oil swelling and aging for ensuring long-term seal stability. SWCNT-HNBR interactions restrict polymer-chain mobility and entanglements.

Surface Grafting of Cellulose Nanocrystals Affects Interfacial Interaction and Crystallization of Polycaprolactone

Xiaonan Peng,Feng Liu,Jungang Jiang,Qian Wang,Zhiying Zeng,Zhenhao Zhou,Yuting Zhang,Siwen Bi

Polycaprolactone (PCL) has a lower mechanical modulus than other biodegradable polymers, which restricts its applications. In this work, 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyl (TEMPO)-oxidized cellulose nanocrystals (TONC) were modified by long-chain PCL diols to prepare grafted nanocellulose (TONC-g) and blended with PCL via a micro-compounder. DSC, XRD, and POM were used to characterize the thermal and crystalline properties of PCL/cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), PCL/TONC, and PCL/TONC-g biocomposites, while an interfacial rheometer was utilized to examine the interfacial tension of three cellulose nanocrystal aqueous dispersions with PCL chloroform solution. Polarized light micrographs demonstrated that both modified and unmodified CNC could induce rapid crystallization of the polyester matrix, and isothermal crystallization kinetic analysis revealed that CNC could significantly decrease the half-crystallization time of PCL, with PCL/TONC-g exhibiting the shortest half-crystallization time. Interfacial analysis confirmed that grafting PCL-diol onto TONC-g improved their compatibility with the PCL matrix. Pendant drop tensiometry measured an interfacial tension of only 12.4 mN m −1 for TONC-g against 100 mg mL −1 PCL, which is substantially lower than that of unmodified CNC or TONC. This improved affinity, further supported by Gibbs adsorption analysis, is attributed to the grafted PCL-diol chains, which act as an efficient compatibilizer at the interface. Highlights Grafted CNC effectively improved the modulus of PCL by 1.6 times. Grafted CNC is suitable for higher-temperature nucleation. Γ of PCL/TONC-g is as 2–5 times as that of CNC and TONC.

Construction of Porous PTFE/PVDF Fibrous Membranes via Sacrificial-Template-Assisted Centrifugal Spinning for Efficient Oil–Water Separation

Xin Liu,Yinger Ye,Jingying Xu,Xianglong Li

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) are usually considered ideal materials for oil–water separation due to their excellent chemical stability, thermal resistance, and hydrophobicity. However, PTFE exhibits poor spinnability in both solution and melt spinning, whereas the fabrication of PVDF fibers typically relies on toxic solvents. To overcome these limitations, a superhydrophobic porous micro/nanofibrous membrane was developed in this work. Specifically, precursor fibers were first prepared by centrifugal spinning using native cassava starch and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) as carrier components together with PTFE and PVDF emulsions. Subsequently, fibers with porous structures were obtained by exploiting the different melting temperatures of PTFE and PVDF during sintering. The morphology, structure, thermal stability, and wetting properties were systematically investigated by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, and contact angle measurements, revealing that the optimal membrane featured a uniformly interconnected porous network with an average fiber diameter of 1.09 ± 0.02 μm. The resulting blend fibrous membrane exhibits excellent superhydrophobicity (water contact angle reaching 154°) and a high oil flux (8500 L/m 2 h). This approach effectively integrates the low surface energy of PTFE with the favorable processability of PVDF, offering a novel design strategy for the fabrication of high-performance oil–water separation membranes. Highlights Porous PTFE/PVDF fibrous membranes were fabricated by centrifugal spinning. The optimized membrane reached a water contact angle of 154°. The membrane achieved an oil flux of 8500 L/m 2 h in oil–water separation. Cassava starch acted as a low-cost green pore-forming template.

In Situ Modification of Aramid Pulp With Poly(Methyl Methacrylate) via Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Technique for Enhanced Composite Properties

Yufang Ma,Haijuan Kong,Biao Li,Qiang Zhou,Zhikang Deng,Yufeng Wang,Muhuo Yu

The interfacial adhesion and dispersion of aramid pulp (AP) in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) denture base materials were enhanced by developing a supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO 2 )-assisted in situ polymerization method. To enhance the fiber–matrix compatibility and dispersion in PMMA, methyl methacrylate (MMA) was grafted onto the AP surfaces in a scCO 2 media. Results of SEM revealed that modified AP has a uniform dispersion in the PMMA composite with strong interfacial bonding. When the treated AP content was 5 wt%, the hardness of the composite was 66.00 HRC, an increase of 28% compared to the untreated AP/PMMA. The volume wear rate decreased to 1.4 mm 3 Nm −1 , representing an 83.3% reduction compared to pure PMMA, which indicated an improved wear resistance indicating an improvement in wear resistance. When the treated AP was 2 wt%, the flexural strength was 166.49 MPa, 50.52% higher than that of the PMMA composites with untreated AP, the tensile strength was 56.39 MPa, 50.52% higher that of the PMMA composites with untreated AP. Thermomechanical properties of the AP/PMMA composites conducted from the DMA results showed the storage modulus increased, but the glass translation temperature did not change. These results demonstrate that the modification of the AP assisted by scCO 2 in situ radical-initiated polymerization has certain advantages in PMMA reinforcement. Highlights Interfacial adhesion was enhanced by in situ modification of aramid pulp (AP) with MMA in scCO 2 . Modified AP has a uniform dispersion in PMMA. Wear resistance of the PMMA composites with modified AP was improved. Storage modulus of the composites improved.

Skin-Friendly Properties of the Deacetylated Konjac Glucomannan/Sodium Alginate Composite Aerogel as a Facial Mask Substrate

Hong Qian,Huiwen Chen,Si Ouyang,Yanlin Tian,Kai Chen,Kao Wu,Qian Zhang,Fatang Jiang

The skin-friendliness of aerogels has been gradually extended into the biomedical and personal care fields. The purpose of this study is to define the skin-friendly properties as three aspects, namely comfort and fit, slippage, and irritation, and to systematically evaluate the skin-friendliness of the deacetylated konjac glucomannan (KGM)/sodium alginate (D-KS) aerogel facial mask substrate. The results indicated that deacetylated KGM interacted with sodium alginate through hydrogen bonds, showing good compatibility and forming a continuous three-dimensional network structure. The deacetylation and sodium alginate optimized the microstructure of the aerogels, resulting in a low density of 72.5 mg/cm 3 and a high porosity of 98%, as well as a high shrinkage rate of 43%, which met the requirements of a facial mask. Compared with non-woven fabric, the aerogels exhibited comfortable and fitting characteristics and had the same wettability and moisture permeability. The elongation at break of the aerogel increased by 1.5 times, the compressive strain reached 60%, the slip height decreased by 68%, and the maximum peel force increased by 53.8%. Human skin tests demonstrated that the moisture content of the stratum corneum increased by 35% to 48%. In the biosafe assays, the D-KS aerogels did not cause any negative irritation on mouse cells and skin. The D-KS aerogel retained a compressive strength retention rate of 85.3%. For the loaded allantoin, the aerogels achieved sustained release, with a cumulative release rate of 88%. Summary The skin-friendly properties of biomass aerogel were defined. It showed good compatibility between D-KGM and SA based on hydrogen bonds. The D-KS aerogels exhibited comfortable and fitting characteristics. The D-KS aerogels showed good wettability and moisture permeability. The D-KS aerogels did not cause any negative irritation to the skin.
