Biodegradable core-shell electrospun nanofibers based on PLA and γ-PGA for wound healing

Yue Fang,Xianqi Zhu,Na Wang,Xuan Zhang,Dongzhi Yang,Jun Nie,Guiping Ma

The repair process in wound healing is vital and complicated, which brings great challenge to researchers. Tissue engineering scaffolds provide a realizable approach for wound repair. In this study, nanofibers with Poly(γ-glutamic acid) (γ-PGA) as the core and Polylactic acid (PLA) as the shell materials were prepared via coaxial electrospinning. The effect of flow rate on the structure and diameter of the core-shell nanofibers was investigated. The microstructure and morphology of the core-shell nanofibers were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In laser scanning confocal microscopy experiments (LSCM), core-shell nanofibers loaded with rhodamine and coumarin-6 were excited with red and green light respectively to further investigate the structure of core-shell nanofibers. The hydrophobicity and degradation of core-shell nanofibers were studied by water contact angle test and degradation performance test experiments. The in vitro cell culture study showed favorable biocompatibility of nanofibers. The in vivo animal experiment showed that PLA/γ-PGA core-shell nanofiber membrane was conducive to wound repair, where more than 90% re-epithelialization was observed. It suggested a promising and dependable material for tissue engineering and wound healing.

Effect of liquid crystal ionomer intercalated montmorillonite nanocomposites on PEO/PLA solid polymer electrolytes

Zhang Nan,Zhang Ai-ling,Liu Qi-fang,Zhang Meng,Li Qiu,Li Fang-fang

A series of solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) based on poly (ethylene oxide)/polylactic acid (PEO/PLA) with liquid crystal ionomer (LCI) intercalated montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites (LCI-MMT) has been prepared by solution blending method. The effects of LCI-MMT on the structural, crystallization, thermal, and ionic conductivity properties of solid polymer electrolytes have been analyzed. It is demonstrated that the incorporation of LCI-MMT into the blend suppressed the crystallinity of PEO and increased the crystallinity of PLA. The maximum ionic conductivity is found to be in the range of 1.05 × 10 −5  S/cm for 0.5 wt% LCI-MMT, which is higher than that of the LCI-MMT-free polymer electrolyte (5.36 × 10 −6  S/cm) at room temperature.

Jiangwei Shi,Lei Zhang,Peng Xiao,Youju Huang,Peng Chen,Xuefen Wang,Jincui Gu,Jiawei Zhang,Tao Chen

Although many bioinspired superwetting materials with excellent capability for oil/water separation have been constructed, functional surfaces combining effective separation property, biodegradability, and easy-controllability are still highly desired. In this work, a facile strategy to realize the controllable wettability on the polylactic acid (PLA) nonwoven fabric has been developed; the resulting superwetting PLA nonwoven fabrics exhibit high absorption capacity and high selectivity in oil/water separation. Moreover, the superhydrophilic PLA nonwoven fabric possesses excellent simultaneous photocatalysis degradation of water-miscible toxic organic pollutants. With the versatility and biodegradability, these advanced PLA nonwoven fabrics may provide effective solutions to oily water treatment.

Development of PLA-PBSA based biodegradable active film and its application to salmon slices

Chunxiang Yang,Haibing Tang,Yifen Wang,Yuan Liu,Jing Wang,Wenzheng Shi,Li Li

Due to negative impacts of non-biodegradable plastic films to the environment, biodegradable packaging materials have become a research hotspot. Novel biodegradable active films based on polylactic acid (PLA) blended with poly (butylene succinate adipate) (PBSA), carvacrol, and thymol were developed. Mechanical properties of films including tensile strength (TS), elongation at break (EAB), optical properties including transmittance (T) and haze (H), barrier properties including water vapor permeability (WVP), oxygen transmission rate (OTR), and releasing rates of active compound from films and antioxidant efficiency of films were investigated to evaluate the films. A shelf life test of salmon slices packed with PLA-PBSA bags (with and without active compound) were carried out. The results showed that PLA-PBSA based films had better mechanical properties than those of similar biodegradable films such as PLA-PHB, and even better than EVOH in terms of two major mechanical properties, TS and EAB. As to active properties, the results also showed a high release of active compound and high antioxidant efficiency of PLA-PBSA films with either carvacrol or thymol. The shelf life test of salmon slices showed the antibacterial and antioxidant properties of the PLA–PBSA films were enhanced when the active compound were released into salmon slices at equilibrium. As a result, spoilage and deterioration of the salmon slices were reduced, which extended the shelf life of salmon slices by 3–4 days during cold storage. Thus, the biodegradable PLA–PBSA films with active compound could prolong shelf life of fisheries products in particular, and food in general.

Thermal, crystallization, and mechanical properties of polylactic acid (PLA)/poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) blends

Zhao Tao,Yu Jinshuo,zhang Xingyang,Han Wenshuang,zhang Shuo,Pan Hongwei,Zhang Qingxin,Yu Xiaoyan,Bian Junjia,Zhang Huiliang

A environment-friendly polymer blends were prepared by the basis of bio-sourced polylactide (PLA) and aliphatic poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) via melt compounding process. 1,4-butanediol and succinic acid was used together with tetrabutyltitanate as catalyst to synthesize PBS via esterified and polycondensation. The chemical structure of PBS was studied by 1 H NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy. The effects PBS content on thermal behavior, mechanical properties, phase morphology, and thermal stability of PLA/PBS blends were systematically investigated. DSC and DMA results showed that glass transition temperature ( T g ) and cool crystallizaiton temperature ( T cc ) of PLA was influenced by PBS. The different phase morphologies of the PLA/PBS blends formed after addition of PBS into PLA. The various phase morphologies from that blend influenced the rheological behavior and further influenced the mechanical properties in PLA/PBS blends, the well dispersed PBS increased the elongation at break of 8.1 ± 0.1 kJ/m 2  with around 80.0% over than neat the PLA. Finally, the PLA/PBS blends have excellent mechanical and thermal properties by analyzing the toughening mechanism and crystallization morphology. Graphical Abstract

Mechanical, thermal, and morphological properties of PLA biocomposites toughened with silylated bamboo cellulose nanowhiskers

Yaorui Ma,Shaoping Qian,Lang Hu,Jun Qian,Cesar A. Fontanillo Lopez,Linqiong Xu

To improve the surface compatibility between hydrophobic poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and hydrophilic bamboo cellulose nanowhiskers (BCNWs), four commercial available silane coupling agents were employed to modify their interfaces with different concentrations (0, 1, 8, and 16 wt%). PLA/BCNW biocomposite films were fabricated by solution casting. The effects of silylated BCNW on the thermal, mechanical, and morphological properties of PLA biocomposites were investigated. The coupled reaction between coupling agents and cellulose via Si-O-C bonding and hydrogen bonding was confirmed. Both, tensile strength and tensile modulus, decreased with the four silane treatments. The maximum elongation at break values increased to 213.8, 111.3, 255.3, and 209.8% after 16 wt% A-151, 8 wt% A-1100, 8 wt% A-174, and 8 wt% A-189 silane treatments, respectively, with respect to 12.4% of the untreated composite. A wire-drawing phenomenon was observed on the tensile fractural surface. Glass transition temperature and crystallinity decreased after the surface modifications. POLYM. In situ grafting approach for preparing PLA/PHBV degradable blends with improved mechanical properties

Gong Jiaying,Qiang Zhe,Ren Jie

A one-step reactive extrusion process has been demonstrated to toughen the poly(lactic acid) (PLA) blend without sacrificing its mechanical strength and degradability. Specifically, poly(lactic acid) (PLA), poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV), and the peroxide initiator were first introduced into the mixer and then heated at the elevated temperatures for triggering the grafting reaction during the extrusion. During this process, the thermal decomposition of PHBV results in the unsaturated bonds that can directly grafted onto the PLA backbones by free radical reactions. From this study, we found that PLA/PHBV blend with a mass ratio of 80/20 (PLA/PHBV) and 0.3 wt% 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di(tert-butylperoxy)hexane (DBPH) is an optimized condition, leading to an improved elongation at break of 15.95%, which is 3.1 times of the PLA and 1.5 times of the PLA/PHBV blend without the initiator, while tensile strength exhibited very limited decreased compared to PLA. Overall, this work presents an environmentally friendly and industrial feasible approach to prepare bio-based toughened PLA for improving the elongation at break, while retaining the tensile strength and degradability.

Flame rating of nano clay/MCC/PLA composites with both reinforced strength and toughness

Olonisakin Kehinde,Li Ran,He Suping,Aishi Wen,Lifei Feng,Mengting Cao,Xin-Xiang Zhang,Ruohai Jiang,Yang Wenbin

The mountmorinollite (MMT) nano clay, microcrystalline cellulose (MCC), and poly(Lactic acid) (PLA (MMT/MCC/PLA) composites with reinforced strength and toughness were prepared. This study aimed to develop MMT/MCC/PLA composite with improved thermal stability and flame rating based on reinforced strength and toughness. A simple and efficient method to hydrophobize MCC and intercalate the interlayer of MMT by mobilising cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO 2 NP) bearing long-chain saturated fatty acid (Myristic acid; MA) to enhance compatibility with the PLA was adopted. The modified MCC (mMCC) and MMT (mMMT) were incorporated into PLA at different wt%. The flaming rating was studied by adding fire retardant (FR) into the composite. The mMCC, mMMT and their composites were characterised by Fourier Transformed Infrared spectroscopy(FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM), X-ray diffraction, Thermogravimetric analysis(TGA), UL-94 test, Limiting Oxygen Index(LOI), and mechanical analysis. FTIR and XRD confirmed the intercalation of MMT with the CeO 2 -MA and the mobilisation of CeO 2 -MA onto the surface of mMCC. SEM study showed the homogenous distribution of mMCC in the PLA matrix and revealed the layered clay structure with the deposition of nanoparticles into the clay interlayer space. The compatibility effect of the MA significantly improved the strength and toughness with more than 100% improvement in tensile strength of mMCC/PLA compared to neat PLA. The flame rating resulted in a 58.8% improvement in the LOI with the addition of the FR. The thermal stability was enhanced by the mMMT and mobility of CeO 2 NP into the interlayer space of the clay. The composite of mMCC/PLA, mMMT/PLA, and mMCC/mMMT/FR/PLA attained a V2, V1 and V0 rating in the UL-94 at a low FR addition. The improvement in fire retardancy did not significantly compromise the mechanical properties. The high mechanical performance of the mMCC/PLA presented MA as a potential fiber-matrix compatibiliser.

Fabrication and Properties of Electrospun and Electrosprayed Polyethylene Glycol/Polylactic Acid (PEG/PLA) Films

Weichang Ke,Xiang Li,Mengyu Miao,Bing Liu,Xiaoyu Zhang,Tong Liu

Polylactic acid (PLA) film is an alternative filter material for heat-not-burn (HNB) tobacco, but its controllability in cooling performance is limited. In this work, polyethylene glycol (PEG) was introduced to form a polyethylene glycol/polylactic acid (PEG/PLA) film by electrospinning or electrospraying techniques to enhance the cooling performance, due to its lower glass transition and melting temperatures. The PEG/PLA films with typical electrospun or electrosprayed morphologies were successfully fabricated. One typical endothermic peak at approximately 65 °C was clearly observed for the melting PEG phase in the heating process, and the re-crystallization temperature represented by an exothermic peak was effectively lowered to 90–110 °C during the cooling process, indicating that the cooling performance is greatly enhanced by the introduction of the PEG phase. Additionally, the wetting properties and adsorption properties were also intensively studied by characterizing the contact angles, and the as-prepared PEG/PLA films all showed good affinity to water, 1,2-propandiol and triglyceride. Furthermore, the PEG/PLA film with a PLA content of 35 wt.% revealed the largest elasticity modulus of 378.3 ± 68.5 MPa and tensile strength of 10.5 ± 1.1 MPa. The results achieved in this study can guide the development of other filter materials for HNB tobacco application. Keywords:polylactic acid;polyethylene glycol;electrospinning;heat-not-burn tobacco;cooling performance

Development of Active Antibacterial CEO/CS@PLA Nonwovens and the Application on Food Preservation

Hui Sun,Bingbing Wang,Youxiu Xie,Fengchun Li,Tao Xu,Bin Yu

The biodegradable activity antibacterial materials have been widely applied on food preservation because they not only protect foods from pathogenic attacks but also relieve environmental pollution. Biodegradable melt-blown nonwovens (MB) have several advantages over the other materials in terms of a simpler and more environmentally friendly fabrication process, higher specific surface area, and lower cost. Herein, polylactic acid (PLA) MB is first modified by polydopamine (PDA) to activate the surface. Then, chitosan (CS) and cinnamon essential oil (CEO) are used to decorate the surface of the modified PLA MB via a simple one-pot method to prepare CEO/CS@PLA MB with different CEO contents. Compared with PLA MB, CEO/CS@PLA MB had a rougher surface and larger average fiber diameter, while the average pore diameter and air permeability reduced. The input of CEO led to a decrease in the tensile strength of CEO/CS@PLA MB and an obvious increase in the elongation at break. The combination of CS and CEO shows excellent synergistic antibacterial effect. The antibacterial efficiencies of CEO/CS@PLA MB against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus enhance with the increase of the CEO content. When the weight ratio of CS to CEO is 1:2, the antibacterial efficiencies of CEO2/CS@PLA MB against E. coli and S. aureus are 99.98 and 99.99%, respectively. When being applied to the preservation of fresh strawberry, CEO2/CS@PLA MB can effectively inhibit the microbial growth in strawberry and reduce decay, which extends the shelf time of strawberry.

Preparation of PVA/PLA-based intelligent packaging to indicate the quality of shiitake mushrooms

Simin Fan,Honglei Mu,Haiyan Gao,Hangjun Chen,Weijie Wu,Xiangjun Fang,Ruiling Liu,Ben Niu

Intelligent packaging was prepared and evaluated to determine the quality of shiitake mushrooms using colorimetric sensing. Bromothymol blue/methyl red composite dyes were incorporated into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to form a porous indicator via freeze-drying. The PVA indicator was then modified with polylactic acid (PLA). The porous structure of the indicator was investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging, and it was found that the hydrophobicity of the PVA/PLA indicator was significantly improved following modification. A sensitive colorimetric response toward the presence of CO 2 in packaging was achieved using the naked eye. During investigations into the potential application of this system, the ΔE value of the indicator was found to correlate significantly with the quality indices (i.e., the browning index, firmness value, malondialdehyde content, and sensory score) of shiitake mushrooms during storage. Based on these correlations, qualitative identification of the freshness of shiitake mushrooms was studied using principal component analysis, while a prediction model of this freshness was obtained by partial least squares regression. This indicator, therefore, shows potential for application in intelligent packaging for the detection of CO 2 due to the clear visualization of color changes by the naked eye.

Balance between strength and toughness for fully bio-based composites achieved by oriented design of filler

Kang Chen,Ruixia Liu,Ce Sun,Dingyuan Zheng,Yuanyuan Miao,Yingfeng Zuo,Haiyan Tan,Yanhua Zhang

Polylactic acid (PLA), a green and sustainable polymer, has shown promise as an alternative to conventional plastics, yet its practical utilization remains constrained by inherent brittleness and poor ductility. Here, we report flexible and twistable PLA composites engineered through the incorporation of tailored bio-based copolymer filler. At filler loadings of only 10 wt%, the composites achieve a tensile elongation at break of 159.60 % and a toughness of 52.40 kJ/m 3 , representing 14-fold and 13.3-fold enhancements over pristine PLA, respectively. Notably, the tensile strength remains high at 52.19 MPa, demonstrating an exceptional balance between strength and toughness. Mechanistic studies reveal favorable interfacial compatibility between the filler and PLA matrix, with energy dissipation occurring via synergistic mechanisms including matrix cavitation, crazing, and shear yielding. The composites exhibit remarkable room-temperature deformability, sustaining extensive bending and torsional strains. These findings advance the development of robust yet adaptable bioplastics, offering new opportunities for eco-friendly electronic devices and sustainable packaging materials.
