For the serious situation of heavy metal pollution, the use of cheap, clean, and efficient biochar to immobilize heavy metals is a good treatment method. In this paper, SA@ZIF-8/BC was prepared for the adsorption of Pb 2+ in solution using sodium alginate (SA) and zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) modified corn cob biochar. The results showed that the specific surface area of modified biochar was greatly improved, with good adsorption capacity for Pb 2+ , strong anti-interference ability, and good economy. At the optimal adsorption pH of 5, the adsorption model of Pb 2+ by SA@ZIF-8/BC was more consistent with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model. This indicates that the adsorption of Pb 2+ by SA@ZIF-8/BC is chemisorption and monolayer adsorption. The maximum adsorption of modified biochar was 300 mg g −1 , which was 2.38 times higher than that of before modified BC (126 mg g −1 ). The shift in binding energy of functional groups before and after adsorption of SA@ZIF-8/BC was studied by XPS, and it was found that hydroxyl and carboxyl groups played an important role in the adsorption of Pb 2+ . It was demonstrated that this novel adsorbent can be effectively used for the treatment of Pb pollution in wastewater.

Silica nanocapsules hold significant importance in agriculture, medicine and machinery owing to their high specific surface area, tunable surface properties and superior loading capacity. However, the industrial-scale production of silica nanocapsules with controllable morphology is still constrained by the challenges of precise morphology control and straightforward functional modification. To bridge this gap, we propose a novel continuous and scalable approach that integrates vapor condensation nanoemulsification with hydrolysis and condensation kinetics, enabling the controllable synthesis of functional silica nanostructures in one step. Precise control over the sample morphology (including solid spheres, nanocapsules and hollow hemispheres) and architecture (shell thickness) were achieved by tuning the concentration of silane coupling agents, condensation time and Span 80 dosage. Notably, the gyrification-inspired silica nanocapsules with wrinkled surface exhibited excellent lead removal performance (removal efficiency of 99.7%), combining high adsorption capacity (567.0 mg g −1 ) with rapid kinetics (20 min). This work not only provides a scalable platform for the industrial fabrication of morphology-controllable silica but also offers fundamental insights into silica growth mechanisms, thus paving the way for the design of silica functional materials in environmental and industrial applications.

The management of mine tailings and remediation of lead (Pb) pollution represent significant global challenges. This study presents a sustainable approach by converting lithium porcelain clay tailings (LPCT) into highly crystalline Na-faujasite zeolite for efficient Pb 2+ removal. The synthesis conditions were optimized, and the framework evolution mechanism was elucidated: four-membered rings → six-membered rings → β-cages → faujasite supercages → crystalline faujasite. The synthesized zeolite exhibited a high Pb 2+ adsorption capacity of 584.12 mg/g and a removal efficiency of 99.7%. In actual mining area groundwater, it achieved over 99% Pb 2+ removal with a high distribution coefficient (K d ) of 3.3 × 10 5 mL/g, demonstrating excellent selectivity. Mechanistic studies revealed that ion exchange serves as the primary adsorption mechanism (contributing approximately 78%), supplemented by electrostatic interactions and surface complexation. The zeolite structure remained stable and could be effectively regenerated using 1 M NaCl, maintaining a high adsorption capacity (>85%) after five consecutive cycles. Preliminary environmental benefit analysis indicates that this "waste-to-resource" approach not only reduces tailings disposal but also exhibits a significantly lower carbon footprint compared to conventional zeolites and activated carbon during synthesis, highlighting its circular economy and environmental synergies. The study further discusses the potential and challenges for the industrial-scale application of this technology. This work provides a dual-benefit strategy for tailings valorization and effective remediation of Pb 2+ -contaminated water.

This work explored the application of sodium lauroyl sarcosinate (SLAS) as a green surfactant in rutile flotation systems. A detailed examination of the flotation behavior and adsorption characteristics of rutile was conducted, particularly under Pb 2+ ion-modified conditions. The experimental methodology incorporated multiple analytical techniques: micro-flotation experiments, surface potential analysis, adsorption quantification, FTIR spectroscopy, SEM-EDS characterization, XPS surface analysis, and computational DFT simulations. Micro-flotation experiments demonstrated that under the optimal conditions (SLAS concentration of 2.8 × 10 −4 mol/L, pH 3), a rutile recovery of 81.49 % was obtained. Notably, as the pH increased, the recovery of rutile exhibited a decreasing trend. Following Pb 2+ modification (8.0 × 10 −5 mol/L) combined with SLAS treatment (2.8 × 10 −4 mol/L), the rutile demonstrated consistent flotation recovery exceeding 90.02 % across a broad pH range (3 ∼ 7). The adsorption capacity experiments and SEM-EDS results indicated that multiple SLAS layers were adsorbed on the rutile. Moreover, Pb 2+ modification improved the favorability of SLAS adsorption. A combination of surface potential measurements and infrared spectroscopy confirmed the chemical adsorption mechanism of SLAS on positively charged rutile surface atoms. XPS characterization confirmed that the SLAS oxygen atoms chemically bonded with the rutile surface Ti/Pb atoms. DFT simulations demonstrated that the adsorption processes were spontaneous, with Pb 2+ and SLAS respectively, forming O − Pb and Ti − O bonds on the (110) surface. This mechanism explains how Pb 2+ enhances the SLAS adsorption capacity and subsequent flotation efficiency of the rutile. These studies proved the industrial potential of environmentally friendly collector SLAs in rutile flotation.

A novel electrochemical biosensor for the detection of lead ions (Pb 2+ ) with improved specificity and sensitivity was developed. The sensor design incorporated molecular imprinting technology, where chitosan was polymerized on the electrode surface to form a lead-specific cavity structure, thereby enhancing selectivity in complex sample matrices. Meanwhile, the tetrahedral DNA nanostructure was employed as the recognition probe to mitigate the entanglement issues commonly associated with single-stranded DNA, thus improving the sensitivity of the detection. The developed sensor exhibited a linear dynamic range from 0.050 to 2.000 μg/mL, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.0034 μg/mL. The aptasensor’s efficacy was verified through the analysis of aquatic samples, demonstrating a high degree of reliability comparable to that of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The iron oxide/nickel ferrite nanoparticles with polycrystalline rhombohedral Fe 2 O 3 and cubic NiFe 2 O 4 phases, and size of 50–100 nm have been obtained by a straightforward hydrothermal approach. X-ray photoelectron spectrum and element mapping show that the obtained nanoparticles are comprised of Ni, Fe and O elements. The formation of the oxide/nickel ferrite nanoparticles was investigated based on the morphology, structure change of the samples from different synthesis parameters. Iron oxide/nickel ferrite nanoparticles act as efficient interface serving as the electrode materials for efficient Pb 2+ detection. Density functional theory (DFT) method was applied to determine the most favorable sites for Pb 2+ adsorption on the iron oxide/nickel ferrite nanoparticles. O atoms of the iron oxide/nickel ferrite nanoparticles are the optimal adsorption sites for Pb 2+ . Standing time, pH value, deposition potential and time are 40 s, pH = 7, –1.5 V and 120 s, respectively. The iron oxide/nickel ferrite nanoparticles-modified electrode shows a linear detection range of 0.001–100 μM, with 0.078 nM detection limit, good stability, reproducibility, and selectivity for Pb 2+ detection. The iron oxide/nickel ferrite nanoparticles-modified electrode shows wider linear range or lower detection limit comparing with other electrodes which can potentially be used for detecting Pb 2+ in practical liquid environment.

The development of reliable sensing platforms for the simultaneous detection of multiple heavy metal ions has remained challenging in environmental monitoring. Herein, a novel ratiometric electrochemical sensor was developed using a Cu-MOFs@MnO 2 NSs composite for the simultaneous quantification of Pb 2+ and Hg 2+ . The composite was synthesized through a facile approach and functionalized onto a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) to establish an efficient sensing interface. This design capitalized on the synergistic properties of both components: MnO 2 nanosheets provided abundant surface hydroxyl groups and enhanced electrical conductivity, while Cu-MOFs contributed a large specific surface area with multiple binding sites for metal ion enrichment. Significantly, the incorporated Cu-MOFs functioned as an internal reference, delivering a stable built-in signal for ratiometric analysis. The developed sensor achieved impressive detection limits of 22.69 nmol/L for Pb 2+ and 30.07 nmol/L for Hg 2+ , while maintaining high selectivity and reproducibility in complex matrices. This study not only established a reliable platform for the accurate detection of Pb 2+ and Hg 2+ but also promoted the adoption of ratiometric strategies in electrochemical sensing to support environmental protection and public health security.

A new composite hydrogel adsorbent for adsorption of Pb2+ has been prepared by combining porous boron nitride nanofibers (BNNFs) and the acrylamide and sodium acrylate copolymer (P(AANa-co-AM)) via a chemical crosslinking method. Porous BNNFs with abundant hydroxyl functional groups can form hydrogen bond interactions with carboxyl and amino functional groups of the copolymer in the composite hydrogel and carry and dissipate forces for the composite hydrogels. So the mechanical performances of the copolymer hydrogels can be effectively improved, which is very valuable for the practical application of the composite hydrogel to remove Pb2+ from waste water. The thermal stability and swelling performance of the pure copolymer hydrogels were also greatly improved. This is not only because of the strong hydrogen bond interactions but also the good thermal stability and flexibility of BNNFs. The composite hydrogel adsorbent shows superior adsorption capacity for Pb2+ (490.2 mg g−1) to most of the reported hydrogel adsorbents. The chemisorption dominates the whole adsorption process according to the pseudo-second-order kinetic and the Langmuir models. The composite hydrogel adsorbent also shows good reusability. Therefore, we believe that the prepared composite hydrogels will play an important role in removing Pb2+ from wastewater.

A new adsorbent, sodium polyacrylate (PAANa) grafted onto the surface of bentonite (Bent), was successfully synthesized by a facile and green Ce(IV)-redox process, for the removal of Pb2+ from aqueous solutions. The results indicate that by this method the original layered structure of the clay can be protected along with its cation exchange capability (CEC), leading to an improved adsorption capacity. The adsorbent (Bent–PAANa) was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and N2 adsorption–desorption isotherm studies. Subsequently the effects of pH, initial concentration and contact time on the adsorption of Pb2+ from aqueous solutions were investigated. The results of the batch experiments specifically indicate that a high adsorption capacity (149.62 mg g−1) of Bent–PAANa for the removal of Pb2+ was obtained at pH = 5, C0 = 1100 mg L−1 and 25 °C. Furthermore, the adsorption kinetics of Pb2+ onto the composite followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption data fitted better to a Freundlich adsorption isotherm than a Langmuir adsorption isotherm hence confirming multilayer adsorption.

Lead pollution presents a significant threat to ecological systems and human health, underscoring the urgent need for highly sensitive detection methods. Herein, we introduce a novel DNA concatemer-encoded CRISPR/Cas12a fluorescence sensor (MDD-Cas12a) for sensitive detection of Pb2+ based on DNAzymes. To accomplish this, we designed a substrate strand containing a long DNA concatemer encoding multiple protospacer adjacent motifs (PAMs) and protospacer sequences for activation of the CRISPR/Cas12a system. The DNA concatemer was subsequently anchored to the surface of magnetic beads (MBs) to fabricate a MBs-DNA concatemer nanoprobe. In the presence of Pb2+, the DNAzyme structure catalyzes the cleavage of the substrate strand, leading to the release of DNA concatemers. Following magnetic separation, the released DNA concatemers significantly activate the non-specific trans-cleavage activity of the Cas12a/crRNA complex. The fluorescence reporter DNA is then completely cleaved by the activated Cas12a/crRNA complex, and the Pb2+ concentration in the sample can be quantified by measuring the fluorescence signal. By harnessing the specific recognition capability of DNAzymes for Pb2+, the programmability of DNA concatemers, and the self-amplification features of the CRISPR/Cas12a system, the MDD-Cas12a platform demonstrates high sensitivity and specificity for detecting Pb2+ in milk and lake water samples.

Due to similar charges, atomic radii, and chemical properties of most metal ions , the selective sensing of these metal ions and imaging in vivo is still a challenge. A DNAzyme assemblied and near-infrared (NIR) light excited nanosensor was developed to detect and image Pb 2+ . In this nanosensor, NaYF 4 :Yb, Er upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) introduced as NIR-to-Vis transducer were the donor of luminescence resonance energy transfer (LRET), and DNAzyme-functionalized black hole quencher 1 (BHQ1) acted as energy transfer acceptor. This proposed nanosensor was applied to detecting Pb 2+ in solution with high sensitivity and selectivity . Furthermore, we have successfully demonstrated the imaging ability of this nanosensor towords Pb 2+ in living cells and early-stage zebrafish with negligible autofluorescence and good photostability. The UCNP-DNAzyme nanosensor would enrich the method of imaging Pb 2+ in vivo, and might serve as a potential tool for understanding the metabolic pathways of Pb 2+ and the mechanism of lead poisoning in biological system.

Graphene oxide (GO) composite materials as adsorbent have been widely researched in the adsorption various heavy metal contaminated water . In order to improve its structural stability and adsorption properties, self-support GO/Sodium Alginate (SA)/1, 2-Propanediamine (PDA) composite membrane was prepared by vacuum filtration. The performance of amino functional groups in composite membranes was observed using X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS). The X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to characterize the interlayer spacing. The Pb 2+ adsorption properties of composite membranes were discussed by intermittent adsorption experiments. Intermittent adsorption experiments include the subject of the pH, contact time, adsorption film weight, concentration of metal ion and temperature change. The Pb 2+ adsorption on the composite membrane strongly depends on pH. After 20 min of adsorption, the membrane reached the adsorption equilibrium, and the adsorption rate was fast. The maximum adsorption capacity of the composite membrane to Pb 2+ was 189.25 mg g −1 . The adsorption process of the membrane was consistent with the chemisorption process and mono-layer adsorption process. The GO/SA/PDA membranes can be used to the adsorption of Pb 2+ , which might give contribution to environmental protection.
