Plant-Mediated Synthesis of Ag–Pd Alloy Nanoparticles and Their Application as Catalyst toward Selective Hydrogenation

Fenfen Lu,Daohua Sun,Jiale Huang,Mingming Du,Feng Yang,Huimei Chen,Yingling Hong,Qingbiao Li

Herein, we reported the green synthesis of Ag–Pd alloy nanoparticles (NPs) using the aqueous extract of the Cacumen platycladi leaves as well as their application as catalyst for hydrogenation of 1,3-butadiene. The biosynthetic NPs were characterized to confirm the nature of alloy by UV–vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The possible functional groups responsible for the reduction and protection of NPs were identified through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results revealed that biomolecules like saccharides, polyphenols, or carbonyl compounds were related to the reduction process, and the (NH)C═O groups were responsible for the stabilization of the NPs. Furthermore, the as-formed Ag–Pd bimetallic-supported catalysts especially Ag1Pd3/γ-Al2O3 was found to possess excellent catalytic performance toward hydrogenation of 1,3-butadiene. A butene yield of 84.9% was obtained, which was remarkably enhanced when compared with monometallic counterparts. Moreover, the activity of it maintained stability within 12 h of durable experiments.

Alkaline Ionic Liquid Modified Pd/C Catalyst as an Efficient Catalyst for Oxidation of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural

Zou Bin,Chen Xueshan,Xia Jiaojiao,Zhou Cunshan

Conversion of HMF into FDCA was carried out by a simple and green process based on alkaline ionic liquid (IL) modified Pd/C catalyst (Pd/C-OH−). Alkaline ionic liquids were chosen to optimize Pd/C catalyst for special hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity, redox stability, and unique dissolving abilities for polar compounds. The Pd/C-OH− catalyst was successfully prepared and characterized by SEM, XRD, TG, FT-IR, and CO2-TPD technologies. Loading of alkaline ionic liquid on the surface of Pd/C was 2.54 mmol·g−1. The catalyst showed excellent catalytic activity in the HMF oxidation after optimization of reaction temperature, reaction time, catalyst amount, and solvent. Supported alkaline ionic liquid (IL) could be a substitute and promotion for homogeneous base (NaOH). Under optimal reaction conditions, high HMF conversion of 100% and FDCA yield of 82.39% were achieved over Pd/C-OH− catalyst in water at 373 K for 24 h.

Pd@silicate-1 synthesized by steam-assisted-crystallization strategy for high-efficient catalytic hydrogenation of furfural

Ye Tiantian,Liu Hanfang,Wang Fupeng,Xie Huijie,Ran Saisai,Xu Wei,Liu Jia,Li Bin,Lin Haifeng,Chai Yongming,Wang Lei

Here, we demonstrate a simple in situ synthesis of Pd@silicate-1 (S-1), using [Pd(NH 2 CH 2 CH 2 NH 2 ) 2 ]Cl 2 as a metal precursor and steam-assisted crystallization (SAC) method. The ultra-small Pd nanoparticles (NPs) (~ 1 nm) can be successfully in situ encapsulated into the silicate-1 matrix with well dispersion. The obtained Pd@S-1 catalyst possesses high crystallinity, a large specific surface area and pore volume. More importantly, Pd NPs encapsulated into silicate-1 matrix can avoid the aggregation and sintering during catalytic reaction. Meanwhile, micropores of silicate-1 can improve the selectivity of the products in the hydrogenation of biomass furfural. Consequently, Pd@S-1 catalyst shows excellent catalytic activity in the selective hydrogenation of biomass furfural with selectivity of 95.7% and activity of 83.7% in the condition of relatively low temperature (458 K). Therefore, this strategy provides a new idea for the synthesis of molecular sieve supported metal catalysts.

Enhancing Pd Catalytic Activity by Amine Group Modification for Efficient Direct Synthesis of H2O2

Entong Ye,Fangmei Lin,Chengbin Fu,Xin Zhou,Qian Lin,Hongyan Pan,Zheng Chen

A great deal of research has been carried out on the design of Pd-based catalysts in the direct synthesis of H2O2, mainly for the purpose of improving the H2O2 selectivity by weakening the activation energy on the Pd active site and thus inhibiting the dissociation of the O–O bonds in O2*, OOH*, and HOOH*. However, this often results in insufficient activation energy for the reaction between H2 and O2 on Pd, leading to difficulties in improving both the selectivity and productivity of H2O2 simultaneously. Based on this, this study reports an efficient catalyst composed of amine-functionalized SBA-15-supported Pd. The strong metal–support interaction not only makes the PdNPs highly dispersed with more Pd active sites but also improves the stability of the catalyst. The amine group modification increases the proportion of Pd0, further enhancing Pd activity and promoting the adsorption and conversion of H2 and O2 on Pd, thereby significantly increasing H2O2 productivity. Additionally, the density-functional theory simulation results showed that due to the hydrogen-bonding force between the amine group and H2O2, this particular anchoring effect would make the hydrogenation and decomposition of H2O2 effectively suppressed. Ultimately, both the selectivity and productivity of H2O2 are improved simultaneously.

Pd/C-catalyzed reduction of NaHCO3 into formate with 2-pyrrolidone under hydrothermal conditions

Yanjie Zhu,Yang Yang,Xiaoguang Wang,Heng Zhong,Fangming Jin

Conversion of CO 2 into useful chemicals has been regarded as one promising method to mitigate the problem of global warming. However, developing an efficient method for CO 2 reduction with facile hydrogen source is still a great challenge. In this study, a new and straightforward method to convert NaHCO 3 , a model compound of CO 2 in basic solution, into formate with 2-pyrrolidone, a model compound of protein-containing biomass, as the reductant on a Pd/C catalyst in water was proposed. Results showed that a formate yield up to 30% from bicarbonate was successfully obtained over the Pd/C catalyst, and the Pd/C catalyst exhibited good catalytic activity and stability. Detailed studies revealed that the propanol generated from the decomposition of 2-pyrrolidone under hydrothermal conditions acted as the actual reductant and hydrogen source for the bicarbonate reduction to formate. Since 2-pyrrolidone can be readily generated from the proteins contained in biomass, the present research provides a promising technology of NaHCO 3 reduction with biomass as the hydrogen source and the renewable energy input, thus it is green, sustainable, and promising for practical application.

Pd/SmMn2O5 catalyst for methane combustion: efficient lattice oxygen and strong metal-support interaction

Ding Jiancai,Li Guangpeng,Ran Rui,Wu Xiaodong,Weng Duan,Yang Zhigang

Manganese-based mullite-type and perovskite-type mixed oxides were prepared by sol–gel method, and then palladium was loaded onto the mixed oxides by wet impregnation method. The catalytic performance for methane combustion, the influence of the supports, and the interaction between noble metal and the mixed oxides were investigated via experiments and theoretical calculations. The Pd/SmMn 2 O 5 catalyst exhibited superior low-temperature catalytic activity for methane combustion ( T 50  = 328 °C), which was superior to the Pd/perovskites catalysts and even better than Pd/Al 2 O 3 catalyst. It was ascribed to the abundant labile surface lattice oxygen species with high mobility and the uniformly dispersed Pd species on SmMn 2 O 5 , as revealed by TEM, CO-chemisorption, H 2 -TPR and XPS. DFT calculations verified the significant metal-support interaction via electron transfer between Pd and SmMn 2 O 5 , which further activated the lattice oxygen and improved the catalytic performance. It demonstrates the prospect of utilizing SmMn 2 O 5 mullite to optimize the typical noble metal catalysts. Graphical Abstract

Hydrodeoxygenation of lignin model compounds to alkanes over Pd–Ni/HZSM-5 catalysts

Yun-Peng Zhao,Fa-Peng Wu,Qing-Lu Song,Xing Fan,Li-Jun Jin,Rui-Yu Wang,Jing-Pei Cao,Xian-Yong Wei

In this work, a bimetallic catalyst of Pd and Ni supported on HZSM-5 was designed and evaluated in the hydrodeoxygenation of model compounds representing various C–O bonds in lignin. The effects of temperature, holding time, and initial H 2 pressure on the catalytic performance of the Pd–Ni/HZSM-5 catalyst were investigated. The results indicated that the Pd–Ni/HZSM-5 catalyst exhibited superior catalytic activity towards the conversion of the model compounds to alkanes compared to its monometallic counterparts. Direct cleavage of the C–O bond in DPE was achieved under low H 2 pressure, mainly producing benzene and minor amounts of phenol and cyclohexane, while at high H 2 pressure, the reaction pathway was altered towards hydrogenation of the benzene ring , followed by then cleavage of the C–O bond to afford only cyclohexane. Moreover, the Pd–Ni/HZSM-5 catalyst showed high activities when applying other substrates including anisole, veratrole, guaiacol, benzyloxybenzene, phenethyl phenyl ether, and dibenzyl ether.

Pd/C embedded crosslinked polystyrene fibers as an efficient catalyst for Heck reactions

Mali Xie,Kexin Peng,Yangyang Luo,Qi Zhang,Linjun Shao,Shaofeng Zhong,Shujing Zhou,Jinjing Li,Chenze Qi

Pd/C embedded polystyrene fibers were successfully prepared by electrospinning. The polystyrene molecules were then cross-linked by paraformaldehyde in sulfuric acid to improve the solvent resistance of composite fibers. SEM images conformed the preparation of uniform and smooth composite fibers. FT-IR spectra demonstrated that the polystyrene molecules inside fibers have been sulphonated and crosslinked. Heck reactions were used to evaluate the catalytic performance of these novel composite fibers. The catalysis results show that this composite fiber mat catalyzed Heck reactions could be evidently promoted by using preferred reducing alcohol agent and solvent. Under the optimized reaction conditions, this composite fiber mat could effectively catalyze the Heck reactions of aromatic iodides with n-butyl acrylate to afford the products with satisfied yields. Especially, compared with the particulate Pd/C catalyst, the separation and recycling of this fibrous catalyst from the reaction mixture were significantly improved due to the larger fibrous structure. At last, this fiber catalyst was successfully reused for eight times with little loss of initial catalytic activity, which was even better than the pristine Pd/C catalyst. Hence, embedment of particulate supported metal catalysts inside the crosslinked polystyrene fibers can effectively improve their catalytic performance and handiness.

A Simple Method to Prepare the High Performance Pd(OH)2/C for C–N Bond Cleavage

Bin Zhang,Xiaodong Guo,Xin Feng,Xiaoxia Duan,Guilong Wang,Chao Yang

The debenzylation reaction of hexabenzylhexaazaisowurtzitane (HBIW) and 2,6,8,12-tetraacetyl-4,10-dibenzyl-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaazaisowurtzitane (TADBIW) to synthesize 2,6,8,12-tetraacetyl-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaazaisowurtzitane (TAIW) is the major challenge in the production of 2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitro-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaazaisowurtzitane (HNIW). This is primarily attributed to the reaction needing a lot of palladium catalysts, which tend to deactivate rapidly during the process. In this work, a series of Pd(OH)2/C catalysts were successfully prepared through a convenient deposition-precipitation method by controlling the flow rate of the PdCl2 solution. Employing the 10% Pd(OH)2/C–F0.5 sample, the debenzylation reaction was successfully completed with a lower usage of Pd and shorter time of reaction. For the HBIW debenzylation reaction, the yield of TADBIW was 87.4% at low temperature (25 °C) when 1‰ Pd/HBIW was used, and the higher yield was 89.8% at high temperature (45 °C) when 3‰ Pd/HBIW was used. The TADBIW/Pd/h values of them were 42.5 and 95.7, respectively. For the TADBIW debenzylation reaction, the complete conversion of the reactant was realized when Pd/TADBIW was 2‰. The value of TAIW/Pd/h was 154.6 when Pd/TADBIW was 4‰, which was higher than the reports. Compared to the reported catalysts, the dosage of Pd used in the debenzylation reactions of HBIW and TADBIW was significantly decreased. Furthermore, the 10% Pd(OH)2/C–F0.5 sample was recycled six times with similar performance, demonstrating excellent stability. Based on the analysis of characterization results, it is effortless to find that the flow rate of the PdCl2 solution plays a key role in controlling the adsorption behavior of palladium species on activated carbon. The lower flow rate is beneficial to obtaining Pd nanoparticles with a smaller size, a higher proportion of Pd2+, and a higher metal distribution. This study may provide a simple way to develop palladium catalysts with high performance for related applications.

Tumor-Targeted Delivery of PD-1-Displaying Bacteriophages by Escherichia coli for Adjuvant Treatment of Colorectal Cancer

Hong-Rui Li,Ying Zhou,Bang-Ce Ye

Bacteriophages, leveraging phage display and chemical modification, have the potential to deliver large payloads of antitumor agents with precision and to advance vaccine development. However, systemic phage administration often induces neutralizing antibodies, which accelerate phage clearance and reduce accumulation at the target site. To address this limitation, we propose a genetically modified nonpathogenic bacterial strain that specifically targets tumors and releases programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1)-specific M13 bacteriophage within tumor tissue. We assessed the antitumor efficacy of this phage-expressing strain as an adjunctive therapeutic strategy along with a therapeutic bacterial strain engineered for the controlled release of an immunotoxin. The combination of these strains demonstrated synergistic effects in eliciting antitumor immune responses and inhibiting tumor growth in a murine model of colorectal cancer (CRC). Moreover, when combined with Folfox, the phage-expressing strain significantly extended the survival. This strategy of in vivo expression and tumor-specific release mediated by nonpathogenic bacterial strains provides an effective and safe method for targeted therapeutic phage delivery to tumors.

Improvement Effect of Ni to Pd-Ni/SBA-15 Catalyst for Selective Hydrogenation of Cinnamaldehyde to Hydrocinnamaldehyde

Shiying Han,Yunfei Liu,Jiang Li,Rui Li,Fulong Yuan,Yujun Zhu

A series of Pd-Ni bimetallic catalysts supported on SBA-15 (0.2%Pd-x%Ni/SBA-15, x = 0.4, 0.7, and 1.2) were prepared through the impregnation method combined with the NaBH4reduction method. X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2adsorption-desorption, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) were used to characterize the prepared catalysts. All the synthesized catalysts were evaluated for the liquid-phase hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde (CAL). The addition of Ni obviously enhanced the CAL conversion and selectivity of C=C hydrogenation to hydrocinnamaldehyde (HALD) over the 0.2%Pd-x%Ni/SBA-15 catalysts. Meanwhile, 0.2%Pd-1.2%Ni/SBA-15 showed the best performance with 96.3% conversion and 87.8% selectivity toward HALD. This improvement was attributed to the synergistic effect between the Pd and Ni nanoparticles, enhancing the dispersion of Pd metal particles and increasing the content of surface Pd0species. In addition, the influences of a few reaction factors including H2pressure, reaction temperature, and reaction time were studied over 0.2%Pd-1.2%Ni/SBA-15.Keywords:selective hydrogenation;cinnamaldehyde;hydrocinnamaldehyde;synergistic effect;Pd-Ni/SBA-15

Promoting effects of MgO and Pd modification on the catalytic performance of hierarchical porous ZSM-5 for catalyzing benzene alkylation with methanol

Hualei Hu,Jinghui Lyu,Jie Cen,Qunfeng Zhang,Qingtao Wang,Wenwen Han,Jiayao Rui,Xiaonian Li

The effect of MgO and Pd modification on the catalytic performance of hierarchical porous ZSM-5 for benzene alkylation with methanol was investigated. The results indicated that the introduction of MgO could reduce the Brönsted acid sites which suppressed the side reaction of methanol to olefins and in turn effectively promoted the alkylation of benzene. However, the single modification of MgO could not completely suppress the formation of ethylbenzene and coke. Doping a small amount of Pd had a positive effect on inhibiting the generation of ethylbenzene and coke, which could be attributed to the hydrogenation of ethylene into ethane on Pd. The dual modified catalyst (MgO and Pd) exhibited high benzene conversion (56%) and xylene selectivity (39.1%), and the lowest ethylbenzene selectivity (0.13%) and coke content (0.4 wt%).
