Sodium alginate emulsion loaded with linalool: Preparation, characterization and antibacterial mechanism against Shigella sonnei

Rongrong He,Weijun Chen,Qiuping Zhong,Ming Zhang,Jianfei Pei,Wenxue Chen,Haiming Chen

This study aimed to prepare sodium alginate-linalool emulsion (SA-LE) to overcome the low solubility of linalool and explore its inhibitory activity against Shigella sonnei . The results indicated that linalool significantly reduced the interfacial tension between SA and oil phase ( p  < 0.05). Droplet sizes of fresh emulsions were uniform with sizes from 2.54 to 2.58 μm. The ζ-potential was between −23.94 and -25.03 mV, and the viscosity distribution was 973.62 to 981.03 mPa·s at pH 5–8 (near neutral pH) without significant difference. In addition, linalool could be effectively released from SA-LE in accordance with the Peppas-Sahlin model, mainly described by Fickian diffusion. In particular, SA-LE can inhibit S. sonnei with a minimum inhibitory concentration of 3 mL/L, which was lower than free linalool. The mechanism can be described as damaging the membrane structure and inhibiting respiratory metabolism accompanied by oxidative stress based on FESEM, SDH activity, ATP and ROS content. These results suggest that SA is an effective encapsulation strategy to enhance the stability of linalool and its inhibitory effect on S. sonnei at near neutral pH. Moreover, the prepared SA-LE has the potential to be developed as a natural antibacterial agent to address the growing food safety challenges.

A novel biomass sodium alginate gel foam to inhibit the spontaneous combustion of coal

Chao Han,Shibin Nie,Zegong Liu,Song Liu,Hong Zhang,Jiayi Li,Haoran Zhang,Zihan Wang

In order to address the environmentally friendly issue of fire prevention and extinguishing materials in coal mines, A new biomass sodium alginate gel foam (SC-GF) was prepared by using sodium alginate (SA), calcium L-lactate (CL), alkyl glycoside (APG) and tea saponin (TS). The effect of different concentrations of CL on the properties of SC-GF was analyzed by studying the gelation time, foaming volume and half-life of the SC-GF. The results show that the gelation time of SC-GF is successfully controlled by using the weak electrolyte CL as the cross-linking agent. When SA: CL: APG: TS = 4 : 1 : 2 : 1, the gelation time of SC-GF is 10 min with half-life of 16 days. Furthermore, A metal coordination bond favorable to the stability of SC-GF is formed by the carboxylate ion of α-L-gulonic acid in SA and Ca 2+ ionized by CL. SC-GF exhibits excellent fire prevention and extinguishing properties. The CO concentration of the coal sample treated with SC-GF decreases from 7556.8 to 34.92 ppm in the process of oxidation at room temperature for 48 h. The temperature-programmed oxidation test shows that SC-GF can delay the accelerated oxidation temperature from 120 to 160 °C, and the CO inhibition rate is as high as 60.5 % at 200 °C. The fire extinguishing test indicates that SC-GF can significantly reduce the temperature of the coal sample and extinguish the coal fire quickly. The study is useful to develop efficient and environmentally friendly coal mine fire prevention and extinguishing materials.

Cerium ions crosslinked sodium alginate-carboxymethyl chitosan spheres with antibacterial activity for wound healing

Tengfei Ma,Xinyun Zhai,Yongkang Huang,Mengzhen Zhang,Pengfei Li,Yaping Du

For wound healing, wound infection caused by bacteria is one of the important reasons that delay wound healing process. Therefore, it is very meaningful to develop a multifunctional wound dressing with antibacterial capability to accelerate wound healing. Sodium alginate (SA) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) are the most commonly used compositions in wound dressing, but their poor stability inhibits the further applications. Introducing CMCS and using cerium ions (Ce 3+ ) to crosslink CMCS and SA to form SA-CMCS hybrid spheres by electrostatic spray method, can not only improve the stability of SA hydrogels, but also endow the spheres with excellent antibacterial properties due to the characteristics of Ce 3+ . The gradual release of Ce 3+ from the SA-CMCS spheres can effectively inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) and Escherichia coli ( E. coli ). Combining the wound healing promotion ability of SA and CMCS, this kind of wound dressing can not only avoid wound infection caused by bacteria effectively, but also accelerate wound healing, thus it is an easily prepared material with potential applications in skin defect repair.

Polyacrylamide–Poly(vinyl alcohol)–Sodium Alginate–Reduced Graphene Oxide/Nylon Fabrics with Multistimuli Responses

Yuanyuan Chen,Hanqing Dai,Yukun Yan,Zhiyan Piao,Hanxu Lu,Zhe Hu,Wei Wei,Guoqi Zhang,Wanlu Zhang,Ruiqian Guo

In recent years, various functional fabrics capable of responding to multistimuli have been widely recognized as promising wearable devices. However, the obtained composite functional fabrics have only been applied in a few scenarios, rendering the achievement of multifunctional wearable application scenarios a difficult goal. Therefore, there is an urgent need to expand the diversity of wearable applications for functional fabrics. Herein, we design hydrogel composite fabrics capable of responding to multiple stimuli, including vibration, temperature, strain, and pressure, to enable wearable multiapplication scenarios. The hydrogel composite fabrics, based on nylon fabrics (NFs), are fabricated with polyacrylamide (PAM)–poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)–sodium alginate (SA)–reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/NFs (PAM–PVA–SA–rGO/NFs). The PAM–PVA–SA–rGO/NFs exhibit a higher elastic stiffness coefficient (2.79 N cm–1) than the blank NFs (1.76 N cm–1), good temperature sensitivity in the range of 30–80 °C, and excellent detecting ability for urine presence with a threshold of unit area of 2.55 × 10–3 mL cm–2. The PAM–PVA–SA–rGO/NFs can not only respond to multiple stimuli but also be integrated into clothing for wearable multiapplication scenarios, such as detecting human speaking and breathing, intelligent sleeves, and diaper alarms. Additionally, the mechanisms of the above phenomena are revealed. These results indicate that the PAM–PVA–SA–rGO/NFs will provide inspiration for the development of intelligence systems, feedback devices, soft robotics, wearable devices, etc.

Synergistic effect of palygorskite nanorods and ion crosslinking to enhance sodium alginate-based hydrogels

Junjie Ding,Hong Zhang,Wenbo Wang,Yongfeng Zhu,Qin Wang,Aiqin Wang

A facile, efficient and universal strategy to design and fabricate ultra-high-strength biopolymer-based hydrogels was proposed. By the synergistic effect of palygorskite (Pal) nanorods, sodium alginate/polyacrylamide (SA/PAAm) interpenetrating network and metal ion cross-linking, a strong, tough and stretchable SA/PAAm/Pal composite hydrogel was prepared. The results indicate the tensile stress of SA/PAAm hydrogel was enhanced from 65.62 ± 1.40 to 106.12 ± 6.04 kPa after incorporating 5 wt% Pal nanorod into the SA/PAAm hydrogel. The post-treatment of SA/PAAm/Pal composite hydrogels with ionic crosslinking results in a significant enhancement of mechanical performance. The Fe 3+ -crosslinked hydrogel (SA/PAAm/Pal-Fe) shows the maximum tensile strength of 1022.32 ± 44.46 MPa (higher than other SA/PAAm hydrogels reported), elastic modulus of 481.04 ± 19.03 MPa and compression strength of 2.14 ± 0.11 MPa (only 0.47 ± 0.06 and 0.78 ± 0.05 MPa for SA/PAAm and SA/PAAm/Pal, respectively). The SA/PAAm/Pal-Fe hydrogel (diameter, 6 mm) can lift up weights over 8.45 kg. The high mechanical strength is resulting from the synergy of multiple crosslinked networks, which are favorable to the energy transfer or dissipation of hydrogel during stretching or compression, and thus form stronger and fracture-resistant hydrogel.

Fe3+-citric acid/sodium alginate hydrogel: A photo-responsive platform for rapid water purification

Yueshan Li,Zhisen Wang,Xiaoyu Wang,Bin Yan,Yinjie Peng,Rong Ran

As water pollution in human society becomes more and more serious, the demand for materials that can be used for wastewater treatment is increasing. Here, we reported a sodium alginate-based hydrogel (Fe 3+ -CA/SA hydrogel) that can efficiently photocatalyze the degradation of malachite green . The Fe 3+ -CA/SA hydrogel is composed of sodium alginate , citric acid, and Fe 3+ . The hydrogel has multi-leveled pore structure and photochromic ability. Benefiting from the unique microstructure and positive feedback chemical reaction process, the hydrogel has high photocatalytic efficiency. Under 365 nm UV light irradiation , the hydrogel can degrade around 95% of malachite green (20 mg/L) in about 4 min, and there is no need to add H 2 O 2 in the degradation process. The work helps to expand the application of sodium alginate-based hydrogels in the field of water treatment. It also has exploratory significance for the principle of photocatalytic degradation of malachite green.

Characterization of sodium alginate-based films incorporated with thymol for fresh-cut apple packaging

Jingxin Chen,Ankang Wu,Mingliang Yang,Yonghong Ge,Penta Pristijono,Jianrong Li,Baocheng Xu,Hongbo Mi

The non-antibacterial and relatively poor mechanical properties of sodium alginate film limit its application for fresh-cut fruit packaging. The phenolic compound thymol has prominent antioxidant and antibacterial activities. The physical and functional properties of thymol/sodium alginate composite films and their ability to preserve fresh-cut apples were investigated. Thymol/sodium alginate composite films were observed to have high tensile strength, elongation at break and UV–vis light blocking capability, but low water vapor permeability, water solubility, and swelling ratio compared with standard sodium alginate film without thymol. The composite films also showed notable scavenging activity against 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radicals. In addition, the composite films exhibited remarkable inhibition of the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli . Furthermore, thymol/sodium alginate films could effectively reduce weight loss, retain nutrition and surface color of fresh-cut apple slices. Therefore, sodium alginate films with thymol have strong potential as a cling wrap material used in the packaging of fresh-cut fruits.

Design and therapeutic application of sodium alginate-based hydrogel with biodegradability and catalytic activity

Li JinFeng,Zhao JiuLong,Chen YongKang,Zheng YuTing,Zhou LingLing,Zhao JiaYan,Liu YiYun,Liu XiuYing,Wang ShiGe

How to efficiently treat cancer in a minimally invasive manner has become one of the major focuses of recent developments in biomedicine. In this research, biodegradable sodium alginate (SA) hydrogel encapsulated with NaHCO 3 and glucose oxidase (GO X ) was synthesized using Fe 3+ as the crosslinker for the tumor chemodynamic therapy (CDT) and starvation therapy (ST). Material safety assessments revealed that this hydrogel possesses good in vitro and in vivo security. In tumor microenvrionment (TME), the Fe 3+ further reacted with the intracellular glutathione and was transformed into Fe 2+ , which triggered the Fenton reaction with the H 2 O 2 within TME and produced abundant highly toxic ·OH (hydroxyl radicals) for efficient tumor CDT. Furthermore, the GO X catalyzed the enzymolysis of glucose to consume the nutrient of the tumor and enhance the H 2 O 2 level in TME. Besides, the CO 2 bubbles that were generated from the decomposing of NaHCO 3 promoted the contact between glucose and GO X . Findings in this research would have important implications for the present status of tumor therapy.

Construction of a Superhydrophobic Sodium Alginate Aerogel for Efficient Oil Absorption and Emulsion Separation

Yushuang Yang,Xiuping Chen,Yiming Li,Zichao Yin,Mutai Bao

Bio-based aerogels serve as potential materials in separation of oil/water mixtures. Nevertheless, there remain some key challenges, including expensive/toxic organic cross-linkers, unpromising reusability, and poor performance in emulsion separation. Hereby, a novel, robust, and superhydrophobic sodium alginate/graphene oxide/silicon oxide aerogel (SA/GO/SiO2-M) was fabricated by simple calcium ion cross-linking self-assembly, freeze-drying, and chemical vapor deposition methods based on the renewable and abundant raw materials. The as-prepared SA-based aerogel possesses high absorbency for varieties of organic solvents and oils. Importantly, it shows high efficiency in the separation of surfactant-stabilized water-in-oil emulsions. SA/GO/SiO2-M aerogels display excellent reusability in both absorption and separation because of their good mechanical properties in the air and oil phase, and the mechanism in emulsion separation is discussed. This study shows that SA/GO/SiO2-M aerogels are a promising material in treating oil contaminants from different fields.

Effects of sodium alginate on microstructural and properties of bacterial cellulose nanocrystal stabilized emulsions

Yue Jiang,Gaobo Yu,Yang Zhou,Yuanyuan Liu,Yuhong Feng,Jiacheng Li

In this work, we reported the in situ biological modification of bacterial cellulose (BC) using various sodium alginate with different molecular weights as the carbon source in the fermentation media. The presence of sodium alginate (SA) showed a great influence on the microstructure of the resulting components of bacterial cellulose incorporated with sodium alginate (SA-BCs), based on the characterization results of SEM images, FT-IR analysis, crystallinity index, and contact angles. With the addition of high molecular weight of SA, the resulting high molecular weight of SA and BC composite (H-SA-BC) demonstrated a narrower fiber and less intramolecular hydrogen bonds, as compared to the modified BCs with lower molecular weights. Specifically, the crystallinity index value of SA-BCs was observed to decrease with the increase of SA’s molecular weight. Using these SA-BCs as emulsifiers, the corresponding physicochemical properties and emulsifying performances of BC and SA-BCs in the stabilization of olive oil Pickering emulsion were fully assessed by Optical micrographs, the diameter of droplets and CLSM images. SA-BCs were proven to show stronger amphipathicity as compared to BC due to the lower molecular regularity of SA-BC and the presence of carboxyl groups. The droplets of the emulsions are observed to be smaller and more uniform when stabilized by the emulsifier of H-SA-BC. Therefore, the addition of SA in the biological modification of BC resulted in a great change in both morphology and amphiphilicity. These results would be helpful in the understanding of the development of natural materials as stabilizers for the potential applications of Pickering emulsions.

Selective flotation separation of spodumene from feldspar using sodium alginate as an organic depressant

Kaiqian Shu,Longhua Xu,Houqin Wu,Zhen Tang,Liping Luo,Jie Yang,Yanbo Xu,Bo Feng

Sodium alginate (SA) was investigated for use as a depressant in the spodumene–feldspar system. In this flotation system, the SA is added before the cation collector, dodecylamine (DDA). The effects of SA on mineral floatability were systematically investigated by flotation experiments, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform IR spectroscopy (FTIR), zeta potential measurements, and speciation analysis. Single-mineral flotation results showed that using 30 mg/L SA allowed the separation of spodumene from feldspar at pH 6, although there was a strong pH dependence. Zeta potential measurements and FTIR analysis showed that SA and DDA can adsorb onto both minerals. XPS analysis revealed the adsorption mechanism: the strong affinity of SA for the mineral surface arose from the complexation of SA and Al sites. Analysis of the surface and solution chemistry revealed that SA chelated Al 3+ or its hydroxides and hindered the subsequent adsorption of DDA, resulting in a hydrophilic feldspar surface. In addition, there were more aluminium hydroxides and unsaturated O atoms on the spodumene surface than on that of feldspar, and these provided available sites for the adsorption of DDA to form a stable reticular structure with SA, thus improving the floatability of the spodumene at certain pH values. Lastly, a model for SA and DDA adsorption at the water–solid interface is proposed.
