3D macroporous Ti3C2Tx MXene/cellulose nanofibre/rGO hybrid aerogel electrode with superior energy density

Bi Xiaoyu,Shi Yang,Ge Shengbo,Xu Ben Bin,Li Xia,He Ximin,Huang Runzhou

Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and MXene have garnered significant attention due to their exceptional pseudocapacitance and electrical conductivity that are viable in energy storage applications. Nevertheless, the challenge of self-restacking between the 2D material surfaces and the tendency of MXene to oxidise has posed obstacles to their further utilisation. This prompted researchers to use cellulose nanofibre (CNF) as a prospective “bridge” to connect the two materials. This approach has been shown to prevent MXene from oxidising while facilitating GO conversion into rGO via reduction. Consequently, 3D macroporous Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene/cellulose nanofibres/reduced graphene oxide (MCG) aerogels have been successfully prepared. A breakthrough in solving the self-stacking problem and creating a sensibly designed 3D macroporous electrode structure has yielded excellent electrochemical capabilities for MCG aerogel electrodes. Specifically at 1.0 mW cm −2 power density, these electrodes have demonstrated an outstanding performance in 5000 cycles with 79.4% retention rate, favourable areal specific capacitance of 671 mF cm −2 and unparalleled energy density of 60.9 mWh cm −2 . Overall, this study offers significant perspectives on the possible uses of 2D materials, especially in terms of adjusting their structure and functionality.

CeO2 and Glucose Oxidase Co-Enriched Ti3C2Tx MXene for Hyperthermia-Augmented Nanocatalytic Cancer Therapy

Leikai Zhao,Rui Zhang,Guixin Yang,Yuhang Wang,Shili Gai,Xin Zhao,Mengmeng Huang,Piaoping Yang

Foreseen as foundational in forthcoming oncology interventions are multimodal therapeutic systems. Nevertheless, the tumor microenvironment (TME), marked by heightened glucose levels, hypoxia, and scant concentrations of endogenous hydrogen peroxide could potentially impair their effectiveness. In this research, two-dimensional (2D) Ti3C2 MXene nanosheets are engineered with CeO2 nanozymes and glucose oxidase (GOD), optimizing them for TME, specifically targeting cancer therapy. Following our therapeutic design, CeO2 nanozymes, embodying both peroxidase-like and catalase-like characteristics, enable transformation of H2O2 into hydroxyl radicals for catalytic therapy while also producing oxygen to mitigate hypoxia. Concurrently, GOD metabolizes glucose, thereby augmenting H2O2 levels and disrupting the intracellular energy supply. When subjected to a near-infrared laser, 2D Ti3C2 MXene accomplishes photothermal therapy (PTT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT), additionally amplifying cascade catalytic treatment via thermal enhancement. Empirical evidence demonstrates robust tumor suppression both in vitro and in vivo by the CeO2/Ti3C2-PEG-GOD nanocomposite. Consequently, this integrated approach, which combines PTT/PDT and enzymatic catalysis, could offer a valuable blueprint for the development of advanced oncology therapies.

Photocatalytic Deposition of Au Nanoparticles on Ti3C2Tx MXene Substrates for Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering

Zhi Yang,Lu Yang,Yucun Liu,Lei Chen

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a promising technique for sensitive detection. The design and optimization of plasma-enhanced structures for SERS applications is an interesting challenge. In this study, we found that the SERS activity of MXene (Ti3C2Tx) can be improved by adding Au nanoparticles (NPs) in a simple photoreduction process. Fluoride-salt-etched MXene was deposited by drop-casting on a glass slide, and Au NPs were formed by the photocatalytic growth of gold(III) chloride trihydrate solutions under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. The Au–MXene substrate formed by Au NPs anchored on the Ti3C2Txsheet produced significant SERS through the synergistic effect of chemical and electromagnetic mechanisms. The structure and size of the Au-decorated MXene depended on the reaction time. When the MXene films were irradiated with a large number of UV photons, the size of the Au NPs increased. Hot spots were formed in the nanoscale gaps between the Au NPs, and the abundant surface functional groups of the MXene effectively adsorbed and interacted with the probe molecules. Simultaneously, as a SERS substrate, the proposed Au–MXene composite exhibited a wider linear range of 10−4–10−9mol/L for detecting carbendazim. In addition, the enhancement factor of the optimized SERS substrate Au–MXene was 1.39 × 106, and its relative standard deviation was less than 13%. This study provides a new concept for extending experimental strategies to further improve the performance of SERS.

Photocured Ti3C2Tx MXene/SiOC ceramic composite for electromagnetic interference shielding in the terahertz band

Ruyue Su,Jingyi Chen,Xueqin Zhang,Wenqing Wang,Rujie He,Ying Li

Terahertz (THz) electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials with superior performance are urgently needed with the development of THz electronic devices. Herein, a photocured Ti3C2Tx MXene/SiOC ceramic (MSiOC) composite with a sandwich-like structure was prepared using a photosensitive resin as a precursor. In addition, the EMI shielding properties of the MSiOC composite with a low mass loading of the MXene were greatly improved. The influence of the content of Ti3C2Tx MXenes on the EMI shielding properties of the MSiOC composite was studied, and its EMI shielding mechanism was further elucidated. The resultant MSiOC composite exhibited an average shielding effectiveness (SET) of 24.5 dB in the frequency range of 0.2–1.6 THz at a MXene mass loading of only 0.3 wt%, which was remarkably improved by 53% compared to pure SiOC. In addition, the MSiOC composite with a broad high-absorptivity frequency band showed an absorption-dominated THz EMI shielding mechanism. This result proved that the synergistic effect of the MXene and SiOC was responsible for the high attenuation capability of MSiOC for THz waves. Finally, MSiOC with customized structures was easily fabricated via vat photopolymerization 3D printing, followed by a pyrolysis process. The smallest feature size of these structures was about 140 μm. Moreover, the flexible photocured green part could be secondary molded, which improved the structural controllability of the composite. Our work provides insights into the rational design of MXene-based composites for new-generation THz EMI shielding materials.

Ti3C2Tx MXene enhanced PEO/SN-based solid electrolyte for high-performance Li metal battery

Hao Xu,Shuai Liu,Zhiang Li,Fan Ding,Ting Wang,Ting Liu,Weimin Wang,Kaikai Song,Jie Liu,Lina Hu

Succinonitrile has shown significant promise for application in polymer electrolytes for solid-state lithium metal batteries due to its high ionic conductivity at low-temperature. However, the use of Succinonitrile is limited due to its corrosion of Li metal. Herein, we report a solid polymer electrolyte with high ionic conductivity (2.17 × 10 −3 S cm −1 , 35 °C) enhanced by Ti 3 C 2 T x . Corrosion of the Li anode is prevented due to the Succinonitrile molecules being efficiently anchored by Ti 3 C 2 T x . Meanwhile, the coordination environment of Li + is weakened due to the introduction of competitive coordination induction effects into the polymer electrolyte, resulting in efficient Li + conduction. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of the electrolyte are enhanced by modulating the ratio of Ti 3 C 2 T x to suppress the growth of Li dendrites. Therefore, Li||Li symmetric batteries deliver stable cycling up to 8000 h at 28 °C. LiFePO 4 ||Li full batteries exhibit excellent cycling stability of 151.7 mAh g −1 with a capacity retention of 99.3% after 300 cycles. This work not only presents a new idea to suppress the corrosion of the Li anode by Succinonitrile but also provides a simple, feasible, and scalable strategy for high-performance Li metal batteries.

Ti3C2Tx MXene/FeCo/Ni flakes composites with convenient preparation process for broadband electromagnetic shielding

Yuntong Wen,Hao Bian,Yongpeng Ran,Yonghao Xie,Minmin You,Huimin Wen,Liyun Shi,Jingquan Liu,Zude Lin

The 2D Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene anchored with magnetic particles has garnered significant attention due to its superior electromagnetic shielding performance and low reflection coefficient. However, current research on MXene-anchored magnetic particles faces several challenges, including complex fabrication processes, difficulty in controlling compositional ratios, the predominant use of spherical magnetic particles. In this work, by employing surfactants, FeCo alloy and Ni flakes were uniformly anchored onto MXene, the preparation process of the composite is simple and facilitates better control over the ratios of individual samples. Due to the unique structure formed by the intercalation of FeCo alloy and Ni flakes within the MXene layers, M-FC-N-35 exhibits an average electromagnetic shielding effectiveness of 61.2 dB within the Ku-band and maintains a reflection coefficient as low as 0.69. Additionally, the M-FC-N-35 composite was applied to the surface of the temperature sensor casing. It was found that under an electromagnetic field strength of 200 V/m and within a frequency range of 6–18 GHz, the temperature measurement deviation was reduced to 9.35 % of that of the sensor without the shielding material, demonstrating high electromagnetic interference resistance. This work provides guidance for simplifying the fabrication process of MXene composites with magnetic metals and enriching the system of electromagnetic shielding materials.

TiO2-Ti3C2Tx MXene@CNTs hybrids modified polypropylene separator for high-performance lithium‑sulfur battery

Yongjie Huang,Yuqing Chen,Qing Xu,Chunyan Xu,Liying Yang,Ningyi Jiang,Jibin Zhong,Xinghan Zhao,Shougen Yin

Lithium‑sulfur (Li S) batteries are regarded as a potential candidate of next-generation energy storage devices. However, the poor long-term cycling performance arose from shuttle effect remains a challenge. The recent studies have shown that two dimensional (2D) MXenes have great potential in high efficient Li S cells due to strong adsorption ability for lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) and effective catalytic activity for rapid kinetics. Herein, a polypropylene separator modified by a three-dimensional (3D) TiO 2 -Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene@CNTs heterostructure using sulfur templates combined with H 2 O 2 partial oxidation treatment is proposed to alleviate the shuttle effect and improve the overall utilization efficiency of sulfur in Li S batteries. The as-prepared separator effectively enhances the LiPSs trapping ability and significantly reduces the oxidation overpotential of Li 2 S, demonstrating high catalytic efficiency and sufficient conductivity to promote the transformation of LiPS to Li 2 S and thus accelerating the transformation kinetics of Li S batteries. Remarkably, the TiO 2 -MX@CNTs modified separator with 1.3 mg cm −2 sulfur loading enables a stable capacity of 859 mAh g −1 after 300 cycles at 1C with a capacity decay rate of approximately 0.035 % per cycle, suggesting promising potential for practical applications. This work presents a new method to regulate the electrochemical performance of Li S batteries.

Ultralight anisotropic Ti3C2Tx MXene/Carbon nanotube hybrid aerogel for highly efficient solar steam generation

Jinyi Wu,Dan Liu,Yuxuan Sun,Bokun Wei,Kun Dai,Yiqing Sun,Fei Zhang,Chuanbing Li,Jie Xue,Zifu Zhu,Xiaobo Gao,Qingbin Zheng

Solar steam generation (SSG) has been considered as a promising method to produce fresh water from seawater. Due to high light absorption and excellent chemical stability, carbon nanotube (CNT) has been widely used for SSG. However, it is still challenge to simultaneously realize high water evaporation rate and energy efficiency for CNT based solar steam generator. Herein, ultralight anisotropic Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene/carbon nanotube (A-Ti 3 C 2 T x /CNT) aerogels are designed and fabricated for highly efficient SSG. The combination of CNT and Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene endows the hybrid aerogel with high light absorption and effective localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), resuting in enhanced light-to-heat conversion efficiency. The porous structure of aerogel leads to multiple scattering and absorption, further contributing to the photothermal conversion process. Moreover, the low thermal conductivity of aerogel structure effectively reduces the heat loss to environment. Through tailoring the anisotropic channel, the A-Ti 3 C 2 T x /CNT hybrid aerogel with average channel size of 80 μm possesses most efficient water transport due to the capillary effect and formation of intermediate water. Therefore, the A-Ti 3 C 2 T x /CNT hybrid aerogel exhibits high average light absorption of 95.68% in the wavelength range of 200–2500 nm, excellent water evaporation rate of 2.10 kg m −2  h −1 under 1 sun irradiation (1 kW m −2 ) with a high energy efficiency of 93.4%, and remarkable durability with 7 days continuous water evaporation. The A-Ti 3 C 2 T x /CNT hybrid aerogel also shows high resistance to salt crystallization due to its high salt transport flux of 1.90 kg m −2  h −1 . This work offers a prospective strategy for constructing highly efficient solar steam generator with stable performance for practical application in seawater desalination.

Synthesis of Ti3C2Tx MXene/Cu-MOF composites for enhanced adsorption of methyl phenyl sulfide

Yanan Zhu,Yongchang Yang,Shiqiang Li,Chang Zhu,Zegang Qiu,Qianqian Zhu

The development of efficient materials for adsorption desulfurization has attracted much attention for the safety of humans and the ecosystem. Metal–organic frameworks have shown promise in removing organic sulfur compounds in liquid fuels, while another star material – MXene has rarely been applied in this field. In this study, Ti3C2Tx MXene/Cu-MOF composites with different MXene contents (3.3%, 6.7%, and 13.3%) were synthesized via an in situ precipitation method. Characterization showed that the Cu-MOF was successfully coated on the surface of Ti3C2Tx MXene and partially embedded between the MXene nanosheets, restraining the agglomeration of both MXene and the Cu-MOF. The optimal composite-3.3%MXene/Cu-MOF presented the largest surface area of 166.6 m2 g−1. Compared to MXene and Cu-MOF, 3.3%MXene/Cu-MOF exhibited an enhanced adsorption performance for methyl phenyl sulfide in the model fuel with an equilibrium adsorption capacity of 87.4 mg g−1. Furthermore, the effects of adsorption parameters, adsorption kinetics, adsorption isotherms, and the adsorption mechanism, and regenerative performance of 3.3%MXene/Cu-MOF were comprehensively discussed. A pseudo-second order kinetic model and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm were found to better explicate the adsorption behavior on 3.3%MXene/Cu-MOF, which exhibited a theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of 183.9 mg g−1. This work hopes to shed light on the material design for adsorption desulfurization.

Ti3C2Tx MXene as Janus separators for redox-enhanced electrochemical capacitors with reduced self-discharge

Wei Yang,Qiankun Han,Wenshi Li,Maosheng Wu,Jing Yao,Man Zhao,Xianmao Lu

Redox-enhanced electrochemical capacitors (redox ECs) are promising energy-storage devices with the potential to deliver both high power and energy performances, although overcoming the severe self-discharge remains a great challenge due to the shuttle effect of redox species such as I − /I 3 − ions introduced in the electrolytes for gaining additional capacities. Herein, we propose a cation-initiated self-assembly process of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets onto glass fiber membranes to form Janus separators that can mitigate the shuttling of I − /I 3 − ions in iodine-based redox ECs. The interlayer spacing of the MXene films can be controlled by selecting different cations such as imidazolium (C 4 mim + ), Mg 2+ , and Al 3+ , therefore the resulting Janus separators exhibit tailored nanochannels for ion sieving. Both molecular dynamic (MD) simulations and electrochemical tests indicate that C 4 mim + -intercalated MXene Janus separators (C 4 mim + -MXene) can block the diffusion of I 3 − ions while allowing the pass of other electrolyte ions. As a result, self-discharge caused by the shuttle effect can be much reduced in C 4 mim + -MXene-based redox ECs, which deliver voltage and energy retentions substantially higher than that of the cells using glass fiber membrane separators (voltage retention: 70% vs. 10%, energy retention: 51% vs. 6.5%) after 24-h open-circuit test.

Probing Thermal Transport on a Suspended Ti3C2Tx MXene Film via a Photothermally Actuated Resonator

Zhen Wan,Cheng Li,Ronghui Liu,Wei Zhou,Wenjing Fan,Chuanxue Huang,Yang Liu

Two-dimensional (2D) Ti3C2Tx MXene materials show great potential in electrochemical and flexible sensors due to their high electrical conductivity, good chemical stability, and special delaminated structure. However, their thermal properties were rarely studied, which remarkably affect the stability and safety of various devices. Here, we fabricated a suspended MXene drum resonator photothermally driven by a sinusoidally modulated laser, measured the thermal time constant by demodulating the thermomechanical motion, and then calculated the thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity of the MXene film. Experiments show the thermal conductivity of the film increases from 3.10 to 3.58 W/m·K while the thermal diffusivity from 1.06 × 10–6 to 1.22 × 10–6 m2/s when temperature increases from 300 to 360 K. We also confirm the film thermal conductivity is mainly contributed by phonon transport rather than electron transport. Furthermore, the relationship between the mechanical and thermal properties of the MXene films was disclosed. The thermal conductivity decreases when film strain increases, caused by enhanced phonon scattering and softening of high-frequency phonons. The measurements provide a noninvasive method to analyze the thermal characteristics of suspended MXene films, which can be further extended to the thermal properties of other 2D materials.

Porous-multilayered Ti3C2Tx MXene hybrid carbon foams for tunable and efficient electromagnetic wave absorption

Junyu Lu,Lei Xu,Cheng Xie,Qun Wei,Qilin Jiang,Guangsheng Yao,Zhaohui Han

The rapid development of modern wireless communication technology makes electromagnetic wave pollution increasingly serious, necessitating the development of high-performance electromagnetic wave-absorbing materials. This study introduces a Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene hybrid carbon foam (HCF) that exhibits a tunable and efficient electromagnetic wave absorption performance. The HCF features a porous, multilayered structure, which enhances its multi-reflection properties, and a heterogeneous interface between the carbon foam and MXene boosting its dielectric loss. By regulating the content of MXene, the ratio of polarization loss to conduction loss can be regulated to achieve better impedance matching. As a result, the HCF demonstrated superb electromagnetic wave absorption performance with RL min  = −72.25 dB and EAB max  = 6.55 GHz. Furthermore, the minimum absorption frequency domain could be tuned within 8–14 GHz by varying the MXene content. The performance in radar wave absorption and electromagnetic-thermal conversion (ramp rate 85.81 °C/s from RT to 200 °C) proves that HCF is an efficient and reliable electromagnetic wave absorber, suitable for radar technology, microwave heating, and communication systems applications.
