Emissions from coal-fired or biomass power plants are often released under conditions of high-humidity, posing significant challenges to the effectiveness and durability of adsorbents and catalysts. In industrial settings, adsorbents and catalysts are often deactivated due to water presence, which can block active sites and reduce their effectiveness. Traditional hydrophobic modification methods often cover these adsorption sites, thus reducing a material’s adsorption capacity for volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In this study, we propose a mild physical blending method, incorporating hydrophobic polymer poly(divinylbenzene) (PDVB) with zeolite-templated carbon (ZTC), to regulate the local environment of ZTC for capturing VOCs under humid conditions without damaging the chemical structure of ZTC. Numerous characterization results confirm that incorporating PDVB does not affect the structure of ZTC. The hydrophobic modification increased the adsorption capacity of ZTC by 205% at 15% water content, while the water contact angle increased from 48 to 138°. Vinyl and phenyl groups in PDVB facilitated the rapid repulsion of water molecules from the surface. Molecular dynamics simulations indicated that the hydrophobic channels promoted the desorption of water molecules, and the number of escaped water molecules increased by 286%. Additionally, we propose an industrial application model for large-scale gas emissions with low-concentration VOCs under humid conditions, which enables simultaneous adsorption and desorption, thereby enhancing operational efficiency.

The improvement of catalytic efficiency is of great significance to the removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), a class of key air pollutants leading to ground-level ozone pollution. Herein, a series of micro-spherical Ca-Mn mixed oxides (Ca x Mn y O z ), namely CaMn 3 O 6 , Ca 2 Mn 3 O 8 and CaMnO 3 , were prepared by a two-step precipitation method, and defects were constructed on which by selective dissolution to enhance the low-temperature catalytic performance in the oxidation of propane (C 3 H 8 ) as a representative short-chain alkane VOCs. The synthesized Ca x Mn y O z oxides demonstrated drastically different response to the dissolution modification initiated by acid treatment. Specifically, after acid dissolution, while CaMn 3 O 6 and Ca 2 Mn 3 O 8 maintained largely their original structures, the perovskite-type CaMnO 3 underwent lattice rearrangement and was transformed into γ-MnO 2 -like product with only a tiny amount of Ca. In C 3 H 8 oxidation, the catalytic performance of CaMnO 3 was significantly improved after selective dissolution, as indicated by a significant decrease of T 90 , i.e. the temperature to achieve 90% C 3 H 8 conversion, from 455 °C to 240 °C. Mechanistic investigation by in-depth X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies revealed that selective dissolution led to higher Mn 4+ concentrations and more oxygen vacancies on the oxide surfaces, thus facilitated electron transfer and O 2 activation in C 3 H 8 oxidation reactions. This study paves a new path for the design of cost-effective oxide catalysts toward the abatement of short-chain alkane VOCs.

The coal chemical industry generates large amounts of solid waste and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In this study, the solid waste semi-coke powder obtained in the semi-coke production process was used as a raw material to prepare high-specific surface area semi-coke activated carbon (SAC) by a carbonization and activation process, and a ternary z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst with high catalytic performance was loaded for synergistic treatment by adsorption and photodegradation to achieve waste treatment with waste. The prepared semi-coke activated carbon has a specific surface area of 619.27 m2 g−1, which can achieve effective adsorption of VOCs. The ternary z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst BiPO4–BiVO4–g-C3N4 (PVCN) was supported on a semi-coke activated carbon substrate by a one-step sol–gel method. Based on the synergistic effect of adsorption and photocatalysis, the obtained PVCN/SAC material can degrade toluene by 85.6% within 130 minutes under simulated sunlight irradiation, which is 2.43 times that of pure photocatalyst. The rate of degrading toluene can be increased by 4.43 times. Capture experiments showed that superoxide radicals (˙O2−) and hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) were the key active species in the degradation pathway. Even after five cycles, the material maintained 81.6% of the degradation performance. In this work, we deeply investigate the mechanism of semi-coke activated carbon as a matrix for enhancing photocatalytic degradation performance. The findings of this work provide new insights into the efficient degradation of VOCs and provide a good theoretical basis for the development of high-performance photocatalysts.

Activated carbon exhibits a high adsorption capacity for chlorinated volatile organic compounds (Cl-VOCs), while the desorption of Cl-VOCs is not desirable in the thermal regeneration progress of activated carbon. Chlorobenzene was selected as the model substance to explore whether Cl-VOCs can be oxidized as expected in the regeneration atmosphere of O 2 -free at the temperature range of 150–450 °C. The modification of activated carbon by Cu or Fe has been shown to considerably improve the decomposition activities. According to the breakthrough curves and detection results from XPS and in situ DRIFTS, the decomposition mechanism of C 6 H 5 Cl on Cu and Fe active sites is illustrated. The adsorbed C 6 H 5 Cl is firstly dechlorinated to form C 6 H 6 and *Cl, and then it was found there are two pathways for the C 6 H 6 oxidation. C 6 H 6 is indirectly oxidized to form C 6 H 5 OH and benzoquinone species, or directly ring-opened to generate ethylene and 1,3-butadiene, and further oxidized to produce CO 2 , CO and H 2 O. The C 6 H 6 oxidation is determined by the decomposition of acetate on Cu/AC, but the decomposition of benzoquinone and maleate on Fe/AC. The Fe 3 O 4 and Fe 2 O 3 active sites have a higher dechlorination activity but accelerate the deposition of FeCl 2 , FeCl 3 and organic Cl-containing components. The CuO active center has a higher oxidation performance with a higher CO 2 selectivity. About 83.0–83.5% of adsorbed chlorobenzene has been oxidized, and the main Cl-containing product is HCl accounting for approximately 77.8–81.0%, a small amount of Cl forms polychlorinated organic compounds or metal chlorides occupying 2.0–5.7%. As the regeneration temperature decreases, the total amount of Cl-containing species is reduced due the lower oxidation and dechlorination activity of catalysts. The decomposition products of Cl-VOCs in the thermal regeneration process of activated carbon were clarified and quantified, which provides a theoretical basis to control Cl-VOCs in regeneration gas.

With the proliferation of vehicles in households, people are spending more and more time in their cars, so it is important to ensure the air quality and safety of the car. In this research, environmentally friendly, green PET@PDA@MIL-101(Fe) (PPM) was prepared by in-situ solvothermal growth and acid etching methods, which was categorized by SEM, FTIR, XRD, XPS, and BET. PPM was used to adsorb benzene, toluene, and m-xylene at low concentrations. The maximum amount of adsorption of PET@PDA@MIL-101(Fe) (PPM) for benzene, toluene, and m-xylene was 68.72 mg/g, 91.63 mg/g, and 78.47 mg/g respectively. The adsorption process of PPM is well fitted by the pseudo-first-order kinetic model and Langmuir isothermal adsorption model. Furthermore, PPM exhibited excellent toluene removal performance in simulated vehicles and excellent cycling capability in adsorption-desorption experiments. As a result, PPM can be used to treat and manage toluene volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at low concentrations.

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation technology has great potential to address both the freshwater and energy crises in a low-cost, environmentally friendly, and sustainable method. How to achieve highly efficient freshwater and energy harvesting simultaneously is still challenging. Here, a Janus-structured multilayer carbon fabric (JMCF) solar evaporator is proposed to effectively overcome the bottleneck in the cogeneration of fresh water and electricity. The Janus structure of the multilayer fabric effectively controls water supply upwards, improves light absorption and photothermal conversion, increases evaporation surface area, facilitates water vapor escape and inhibits VOCs volatilization. Accordingly, the optimized JMCF solar evaporator can achieve a high evaporation rate of 3.12 kg m -2 h −1 and an output voltage of 0.577 V in 3.5 wt% seawater under 1 sun irradiation. In addition, the JMCF evaporation system also demonstrates good working stability, self-cleaning capacity, environmental adaptability, and economic feasibility. This work provides new ideas and inspiration for the design of high efficiency solar-driven interfacial evaporation system to address the freshwater scarcity, energy crisis, global change problem, etc.

Ligand functionalization could effectively modulate the local electron distribution of MOFs, thus improving their performance in both the capturing and photocatalytic oxidization of various VOCs. In this work, a series of Fc-CHO/NU-X (X = 1, 2, 3, 4) were obtained through the ligand functionalization of reo -NH 2 -UiO-66 (denoted as NU) with ferrocenecarboxaldehyde (Fc-CHO) as the modifier. By altering the local charge distribution and inducing Fe-OH and cyclopentadienyl rings as new adsorption sites, Fc-CHO altered the adsorption behavior of both aromatic and oxygenated VOCs and consequently their degradation pathways. The introduction of electron-donating Fc-CHO enhanced the ligand to metal charge transfer (LMCT), accelerated the electron-hole separation and therefore promoted the effective formation of oxidative radicals, facilitating the effective oxidation of acetaldehyde. Direct charge transfer through p-p interaction enabled the ring-opening and deep oxidation of toluene. The degradation efficiencies of toluene and acetaldehyde increased from 25 % and 28 % (NU) to 80 % (Fc-CHO/NU-3) and 65 % (Fc-CHO/NU-2), respectively. Positive effects of Fc-CHO functionalization were also observed during the removal of acetaldehyde-toluene mixtures and the synergistic effect between acetaldehyde and toluene was revealed. This work provides new ideas and novel materials for the purification of in-door air pollutants.

Electron beam (EB) irradiation has emerged as an effective post-synthetic strategy to modify the structural properties of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), offering enhanced defect engineering and improved active site dispersion. In this study, UiO-66-100, pretreated under the optimal EB irradiation dose of 100 kGy with abundant structural defects, was selected as the support to synthesize supported noble metal catalysts M-UiO-66-100 (M = Pt, Pd, Ru, Ag, Au). The catalytic performance of M-UiO-66-100 was evaluated by toluene and 2-propanol degradation. Among them, Pt-UiO-66-100 exhibited superior performance for toluene oxidation (T 90 = 187 °C), while Pd-UiO-66-100 showed excellent activity for 2-propanol degradation (T 90 = 229 °C). Both catalysts exhibited distinct physicochemical properties and adsorption behaviors in single-component Volatile organic compound (VOC) systems. Interestingly, further studies revealed that both Pt- and Pd-based catalysts displayed significantly enhanced catalytic activity for toluene and 2-propanol mixture oxidation, highlighting a mutual promotion effect. VOC- temperature-programmed desorption/oxidation (TPD/TPO) and thermal desorption-gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (TD-GC–MS) results elucidated the mutual promotion effect that compared with single VOC systems, Pd-UiO-66-100 and Pt-UiO-66-100 produce fewer intermediates during mixed VOC degradation, which reduced the accumulation of intermediates on the catalysts surface, released the surface active sites, and accelerated their mineralization. This work provides a rational design approach for EB-modified MOF-supported catalysts and deepens the insights into the synergistic oxidation mechanism in mixed-VOC systems.

Designing multifunctional catalysts for low-temperature co-oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and CO is challenging, as conventional catalysts cannot simultaneously achieve VOCs activation and CO poisoning resistance below 200 °C—where CO preferentially adsorbs and severely inhibits VOCs oxidation. Herein, we proposed a density functional theory (DFT)-guided atomic engineering strategy integrating d-band center modulation and adsorption energy screening to construct metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-hosted Au-Pt single-atom alloys (SAAs). By leveraging the coordination confinement of UiO-66 to stabilize Au-Pt SAAs sites, the optimized Au-Pt SAAs/UiO-66 catalyst achieved exceptional performance in co-oxidation of toluene and CO, attaining 90 % toluene conversion at 160 °C with robust stability under CO-poisoning conditions. Mechanistic studies and DFT calculations revealed that atomically dispersed Au sites induced Pt δ− -Au δ+ charge polarization on Pt nanoparticles charge polarization via interfacial electron transfer, weakening CO adsorption while enhancing toluene activation through dual-pathway mechanisms (Eley-Rideal and Langmuir-Hinshelwood) mechanisms. This synergy decouples the traditional trade-offs between activity and stability, offering a 4.7-fold higher turnover frequency than conventional Pt catalysts. Our work established a paradigm for electronic cooperativity in MOF-hosted SAAs, providing atomic-level insights into the design of multifunctional catalysts for environmental remediation.

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) have long been a threat to human health. However, designing economical and efficient transition metal composite oxide catalysts for VOCs purification remains a challenge. Herein, this study demonstrates the enormous potential of grain boundary engineering in facilitating VOCs decomposition over ordered mesoporous composite oxide denoted as 3D-Mn x Co y (x, y = 1, 3, 5, 7, 9). Specifically, the three-dimensional (3D) Mn7Co1 catalyst shows 100% ethyl acetate removal efficiency for a continuous airflow containing 1000 ppm ethyl acetate over 60000 h −1 space velocity at 160 °C. Mechanism study suggests that the high catalytic performance originates from the lattice distortion caused by the introduction of heteroatoms , along with the size effect of nanopore walls, which leads to the formation of various grain boundaries on the catalyst surface. The presence of grain boundaries facilitates the generation of oxygen vacancies , thus promoting the migration and activation of oxygen species. Furthermore, the near-atmospheric pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP- XPS) monitoring results reveal that the bimetallic synergy enhanced by grain boundary accelerates the catalytic reaction rate of VOCs through Mn 3+ +Co 3+ ↔Mn 4+ +Co 2+ redox cycle. This study may shed light on the great potential of ordered mesoporous bimetallic oxide catalysts in VOCs pollution control.

This study investigated volatile organic compound (VOC) variations across commercial grades (G1, G2, G3) of Chinese black truffles ( Tuber indicum ) using electronic nose ( E -nose), headspace solid-phase microextraction gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (HS-SPM E -GC–MS), and headspace gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (HS-GC-IMS). E-nose analysis revealed significant differences in sulfur-containing and terpenic compounds between grades. HS-SPME-GC–MS identified 95 VOCs, with G1 exhibiting the highest diversity (75 compounds) and unique markers like 2-butanone. Orthogonal partial least squares-discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) highlighted 86 discriminatory VOCs (VIP > 1). Odor activity value (OAV) analysis showed G1 had the strongest aroma intensity, driven by esters (ethyl isobutyrate, OAV = 6574) and alcohols (1-octen-3-ol, OAV = 3444). Higher-grade truffles (G1) contained distinct sulfur compounds absent in lower grades. This multi-technique approach provides a biochemical basis for refining truffle grading standards beyond morphological criteria.

This study explored how pore size engineering in Nb-Mn/MCM-41 catalysts affects plasma-catalytic toluene oxidation. Adjusting the pore diameter (2.49–3.98 nm) modulated metal-support interactions and oxygen dynamics, with pore expansion to 3.73 nm (M3) optimizing the Mn4+/(Mn2++ Mn3+) ratio (XPS: 36.8%), the amount of lattice oxygen species (O2-TPD: 0.222 mmol/g), and crystallite size control (1.5 ± 0.2 nm, TEM). Smaller pores (M1: 2.49 nm) enhanced toluene adsorption but limited active site accessibility, while oversized pores (M4: 3.98 nm) reduced oxygen storage capacity (0.600→0.412 mmol/g). The Nb-Mn/M3 catalyst achieved superior performance with 96.8% toluene conversion, 55.0% CO2selectivity, and 85.4% carbon balance, while minimizing organic byproducts (GC-MS). Mechanistic studies revealed pore-mediated oxygen storage-transport cycles as critical for decoupling adsorption and oxidation steps. This study reveals fundamental mechanisms linking pore architecture to plasma-catalytic synergy in toluene oxidation, offering critical insights for the systematic design of energy-efficient, plasma-catalytic systems targeting industrial VOCs remediation.
