Zinc-incorporated biomaterials show promoting effects on osteogenesis; however, excessive zinc ions lead to cytotoxic reactions and also have other adverse effects. Therefore, the double-edged effects of Zn2+ microenvironments on osteogenesis may become critical issues for new material development. This study systematically investigated the bidirectional influences of diverse Zn2+ microenvironments on the cell adhesion, proliferation, osteogenic differentiation and apoptosis of rBMSCs. Furthermore, the mechanisms of zinc-induced osteogenic differentiation of rBMSCs and of cell apoptosis induced by high concentration of Zn2+ were both discussed in detail. The results indicated that the Zn2+ microenvironments of 2 μg mL−1 and 5 μg mL−1 effectively improved the initial adhesion and proliferation of rBMSCs, while that of 15 μg mL−1 had exactly the opposite effect. More importantly, the suitable Zn2+ microenvironments (2 μg mL−1 and 5 μg mL−1) moderately increased the intracellular Zn2+ concentration by regulating zinc transportation, and then activated the MAPK/ERK signaling pathway to induce the osteogenic differentiation of rBMSCs. In contrast, the high Zn2+ concentration (15 μg mL−1) not only inhibited the osteogenic differentiation of rBMSCs by damaging intracellular zinc homeostasis, but also induced rBMSC apoptosis by enhancing intracellular ROS generation. The current study clarified the double-edged effects of Zn2+ microenvironments on the osteogenic properties of rBMSCs and the related mechanisms, and may provide valuable guidance for optimizing the design of zinc-doped biomaterials and zinc-based alloys.

A novel salen derivative, named as 6,6′-((1E,1′E)-(1,2-phenylenebis(azaneylylidene))bis(methaneylylidene))bis(4-(4-iodobutyl)-2-methylphenol) (PA), was obtained for the detection of Zn 2+ . PA exhibited highly sensitive and selective via a chelation mechanism, which was promoted by Zn 2+ , accompanied by enhanced fluorescence. After adding various metal ions in the PA solution, only Zn 2+ caused PA fluorescence enhancement. Other cations (such as Ag + , Al 3+ , Ba 2+ , Ca 2+ , Cd 2+ , Cr 3+ , Cu 2+ , Fe 3+ , Hg 2+ , K + , La 3+ , Li + , Mg 2+ , Na + , Ni 2+ and Pb 2+ ) cannot induce similar response. The binding stoichiometry and detection limit was 1:1 and 16.3 nM, respectively, which is superior to the reported Zn 2+ fluorescent probes based on salen derivatives. The binding process was reasonably speculated by fluorescence measurements, infrared spectroscopy, 1 H NMR titrations, FT-IR, mass spectroscopy (MS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. In addition, PA can be used for Zn 2+ fluorescence imaging in HeLa cells. This work indicated that this probe would be of great application prospect in medical diagnosis.

There is an increasing interest to enhance resistance to pathogens on the powder-coated surface. Traditional silver antimicrobial agents are hard to endure high curing temperature and lead to the yellowness of the surface appearance. Commercial sources usually cut down silver loading (less than 2.5 wt %) to avoid the color change and this will result in a low inhibitory effect and poor durability. To improve the antimicrobial performance and maintain the appearance, Ag+, Cu2+, and Zn2+ ternary inorganic antimicrobial agents on Linde A zeolite supports were prepared in this study. The silver content of this agent is increased to 8–10 wt % and the coated surface exhibits high antimicrobial efficiency. The coating appearance shows a little adverse color change (ΔE = 1.47) when adding 2 wt % amount of agent. The reduction rate of this agent was over 99.99% after 6 h for Escherichia. coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans according to the ASTM E2180-07 standard, and the paint film can maintain over 99% reduction rate even for 11 cleaning cycles. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results show that Cu2+ is the main reduced ion during the curing process, which protects Ag+ from reduction. The leaching test confirms Zn2+ increases the number of extra exchangeable cations, which can prolong the antimicrobial durability. The selected molar ratio of Ag+, Cu2+, and Zn2+ is 1:2:3 according to quantitative study. Moreover, the addition of fillers and pigments was slightly increased the color change of the coated surface.

Hexagonal birnessite is the most ubiquitous manganese oxide in geological environments. It is often highly enriched in trace metal ions such as Ni and plays an important role in metal(loids) geochemistry . Nanostructured birnessites containing different amounts of Ni were synthesized by addition of Ni 2+ to initial reactants. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), element analysis, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and isothermal adsorption and oxidation of metal(loids) were carried out to investigate the effects of Ni doping on the substructure and physicochemical properties of birnessite, and Ni crystal chemistry in birnessite. These Ni-rich birnessites have Ni contents as high as 2.99% (Ni5) and 6.08% (Ni10) in weight. EXAFS results show that Ni5 has 23.7% of the total Ni (0.71 wt.%) and Ni10 has 34.5% of the total Ni (2.10 wt.%) in Mn octahedral layer with the remaining Ni located at vacancies and edge sites. The Ni-rich birnessites have weaker crystallinity and thermal stability, fewer layers stacked along the c axis, ∼1.5–2.7 times larger surfaces areas, and a higher Mn average oxidation numbers (AONs) compared to the birnessite without Ni. Additionally, the doping of Ni during birnessite crystallization enhances the formation of vacancies in the layer; however, adsorption capacities for Pb 2+ and Zn 2+ by these Ni-rich birnessites are reduced, mainly because of vacancies and edge sites occupation by a large amount of Ni. The Ni-rich birnessites exhibit much higher oxidation capability and can completely oxidize As(III) in solution at rapid initial reaction rates under the experimental condition. The results indicate that incorporation of Ni into the natural birnessite in ferromanganese nodules may be achieved both by direct coprecipitation with Mn to build the layers and migration over time from adsorbed Ni on the surface into the layer structure. It is also implied that Ni doping in birnessite has great impact on the geochemical behaviors of heavy metals, either in adsorption or oxidation reactions.

Diabetic wound healing is often hampered by persistent oxidative stress, poor angiogenesis, and bacterial infections. Herein, ZnS/keratin nanoclusters(ZnS@Ker) were first synthesized using the ion diffusion method based on chelation between keratin and metal ions, achieving the controlled release of hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) and Zn 2+ ions. These nanoclusters were then co -electrospun with polyurethane (PU) to afford PU/ZnS@Ker mats. These mats demonstrated acidic responsive release of Zn 2+ and H 2 S under an infected wound microenvironment, fostering cell adhesion, migration, and angiogenesis while effectively combating bacterial infection and scavenging reactive oxygen species. Notably, in vivo wound healing studies in diabetic rats revealed that PU/ZnS@Ker mats promoted collagen deposition and tissue regeneration, thereby accelerating wound healing. Taken together, PU/ZnS@Ker biocomposite mats emerge as an up-and-coming solution for managing diabetic wound healing.

The incidence rate of breast cancer remains high, and lung metastasis often leads to treatment failure. Immunotherapy based on the cyclic guanosine monophosphate synthesis (cGAS) − interface gene stimulatory factor (STING) pathway is expected to bring benefits to the treatment of breast cancer. This study provided a delivery system based on fucoidan (Fu) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) for the potential molecule resveratrol (Res). The study confirmed that Fu and PVP were assembled into nanoparticles through hydrogen bonding and effectively loaded Res (Fu/PVP/Res). Interestingly, the adsorption of Zn 2+ (Fu/PVP/Res Zn 2+ ) was expected to provide impetus for the treatment of breast cancer. The results in vitro confirmed that Fu/PVP/Res Zn 2+ significantly inhibited the proliferation of breast cancer 4T1 cells, induced the accumulation of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the damage of mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), and further induced the cytoplasmic release of mtDNA, which was the direct cause of the activation of cGAS-STING pathway. In vivo studies confirmed that Fu/PVP/Res Zn 2+ treatment inhibited the growth of 4T1 transplanted tumors. Excitingly, Fu/PVP/Res Zn 2+ treatment also prevented lung metastasis of in situ tumors. The in vivo mechanism confirmed that Fu/PVP/Res Zn 2+ treatment activated the cGAS-STING pathway and induced abnormal expression of tumor apoptosis factors such as Bax/Bcl-2. In conclusion, our research provided potential for the treatment of breast cancer.

The practical deployment of rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (RAZBs) in the scaled power system suffers from unregulated Zn dendrite growth as well as parasitic reactions at the zinc foil/aqueous electrolyte interface, leading to insufficient zinc utilization and severe electrode corrosion. Herein, a novel crown ether additive is developed, with tailored molecular engineering, to stepwise regulate the Zn 2+ solvation network and interfacial chemistry of Zn metal anode. The designed crown ether (C5SeCN), featuring zincophilic cyano group and hydrophobic selenium, efficiently reconstructs the solvation sheath of Zn ions at the 0.3 wt.% dose amount. Additionally, the ozone plasma treatment tethers the O 2- groups onto the thin-layer zinc foil, which thus binds Se atoms of the C5SeCN to the Zn anode. The Zn||Zn symmetric cells exhibit a lifespan of over 4500 h at 1 mA cm −2 and high current density endurance of up to 10 mA cm −2 . Moreover, the 2 mAh cm −2 Zn||V 2 O 5 full cell model, at the low N/P ratio of 2.8 with a lean electrolyte (E/C ratio = 10 µL mAh −1 ), enables robust cycling endurance at 2 A g⁻¹ for 300 cycles. This study unravels the interfacial design rationales for maximizing zinc utilization and highlights the commercial potential of crown ether additives for RAZBs development.

The immunoregulation of tissue-engineered bone has emerged as a prominent area for bone defect repair. While this field demonstrates considerable potential, effectively managing relevant factors and maintaining a balanced immune microenvironment in practical applications remain substantial challenges that require resolution. In this study, we tested a novel comprehensive hierarchical delivery system based on the requirements of a natural immune microenvironment for inflammatory factors, to optimize local immune responses through precise regulation of drug release. Quercetin (Que)-loaded zeolite imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoparticles were embedded in gelatin methacrylate (GelMA) to create a drug-release system featuring a Zn2+ shell and quercetin core. In vivo and in vitro studies demonstrated that this dual sustained-release hydrogel-ZIF-8 system can produce low concentrations of Zn2+ at an early stage, resulting in a mild anti-inflammatory effect and proliferation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs). Moreover, as inflammation advances, the release of quercetin works synergistically with Zn2+ to enhance anti-inflammatory responses, reconfigure the local microenvironment, and mitigate the inflammatory response that adversely impacts bone health by inhibiting the NF-κB signaling pathway, thereby promoting osteogenic differentiation. This system is pioneering for sequential microenvironment regulation based on its diverse anti-inflammatory properties, offering a novel and comprehensive strategy for bone immune regulation in the clinical treatment of bone defects.

The spinel-structured LiMn 2 O 4 cathode material exhibits low specific capacity and rapid capacity decay under high current densities , significantly limiting its commercial application prospects. This study uses a coprecipitation and calcination method to dope Zn into LiMn 2 O 4 , discovering that doping Zn elements causes LiMn 2 O 4 to preferentially grow along the (110) and (100) crystal planes. The (110) and (100) crystal planes provide more Li ion channels, contributing to the improvement of rate performance. In the custom-designed LiZn 0.04 Mn 1.96 O₄ (LZMO-0.04) cathode, the strategic addition of Zn occupying Mn sites makes electrons more delocalized, increasing the free electron gas and enhancing the material’s conductivity. The LZMO-0.04 sample exhibits a rich variety of polymorphic morphologies, a lower Mn³⁺ content, and a higher Li⁺ diffusion coefficient . These optimization effects, resulting from the synergistic action of multiple factors, enabled the LZMO-0.04 sample to achieve an initial discharge capacity of 127.73 mAh/g with a capacity retention rate of 83.06 % after 300 cycles at a rate of 0.5C. Even with an increase to a high rate of 5 C over 1200 cycles, the capacity retention rate remained stable at 81.89 %, exhibiting excellent high-rate cycle stability.

The development of aqueous zinc-ion batteries is crucial for advancing sustainable energy storage technologies. However, their widespread application is hindered by Zn corrosion and uncontrolled Zn dendrite growth. One promising approach involves creating a functional organic-inorganic interface on the Zn surface. Traditional binders, such as polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), fail to regulate water activity and ion migration, limiting the effectiveness of the interface. Herein, we introduce an aqueous dual ionic/electronic conducting binder, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS), to build a water-scarce, Zn 2+ -enriched interface. Our findings demonstrate that PEDOT:PSS not only facilitates uniform distribution of inorganic fillers, forming a cohesive and compact interface, but also significantly enhances mechanical integrity. Additionally, the sulfonate groups within the binder matrix disrupt the hydrogen bond network of water molecules, reducing water activity and lowering the desolvation energy barrier of Zn(H 2 O) 6 2+ clusters. Therefore, the transference number of Zn 2+ is elevated to 0.81 (compared to 0.61 with PVDF), mitigating undesirable side reactions and enabling dendrite-less Zn deposition. Consequently, symmetrical Zn||Zn cells with PEDOT:PSS binder demonstrate a lifetime with 4.2 times longer than those with PVDF. This work underscores the critical role of binder chemistry in stabilizing metal anodes for aqueous batteries.

A novel salicylaldehyde-benzohydrazide–based fluorescent probe L was designed and synthesized. The probe displayed excellent specificity and sensitivity for Zn 2+ detection in aqueous media (HEPES buffer, pH = 7.40), accompanied by a remarkable colorimetric fluorescence change from colorless to green under a 365 nm UV lamp. The detection mechanism of probe L for Zn 2+ was elucidated by 1 H NMR, HRMS, and DFT calculation. Moreover, the probe was effectively applied in the detection of Zn 2+ in both environmental samples and biological imaging in living cells.

Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) incorporating metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) hold significant promise for gas separation applications. However, the inherent disparity between the organic polymer matrix and the inorganic fillers frequently leads to interfacial incompatibility issues. In this study, we adopted an in-situ interfacial crosslinking strategy to fabricate MMMs incorporating NH 2 -Zn 2 (Bim) 4 nanosheets that simultaneously act as nanofillers and reactive crosslinkers. Specifically, during the thermal imidization reaction process, the amino groups of NH 2 -Zn 2 (Bim) 4 not only establish hydrogen bonding interactions with the carbonyl groups of polyamic acid (PAA) (the precursor of polyimide), but undergo dehydration reactions with carboxyl groups, leading to the formation of stable amide linkages. Meanwhile, the aromatic structure of the BI units, a key monomer of polyimide, closely resembles that of the ligands of NH 2 -Zn 2 (Bim) 4 , which can establish π-π stacking interactions, further improving the interfacial compatibility between the polymer matrix and MOF fillers. Among the prepared samples, MMMs incorporating 33.3 wt% NH 2 -Zn 2 (Bim) 4 nanosheets exhibit the maximum H 2 permeability of 680.5 Barrer, and its H 2 /N 2 and H 2 /CO 2 selectivities were 18.7 and 13.3, respectively, which were close to or even exceeded the Robeson upper bound. The proposed in-situ interfacial engineering based on chemical crosslinking provides a novel and effective route for fabricating high-performance MMMs with enhanced interfacial compatibility, demonstrating great potential for hydrogen separation applications.
