Herein, a novel electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor was developed using a dual signal amplification mechanism based on a typical HKUST-1 metal-organic framework, [Cu3(BTC)2(H2O)3, BTC=1,3,5-benzene tricarboxylate], CdS quantum dots (QDs) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) for ultrasensitive determination of catechol. HKUST-1 not only has a dispersion effect to carry more CdS QDs for enhancing stability, but also acts as effective catalyzer to accelerate the transformation of persulfate ion (S2O82−) for generating more sulfate radical anions (SO4•−), therefore amplifying the signal of the ECL sensor. Meanwhile, the introduction of MWCNTs to the ECL process could promote the electron transfer rate and accelerate the kinetics of the electro-catalytic reaction attributing to its stronger conductivity, achieving dual-amplifying effect, which could obviously increase the sensitivity of the ECL sensor. The proposed sensor displayed a wide linear range of 1 × 10−7 − 1 × 10−3 M and a low detection limit of 3.8 × 10−8 M with excellent stability, high repeatability and outstanding anti-interference ability under the optimal conditions. Impressively, the sensor possessed commendable feedback when detecting catechol in real samples. Therefore, this research provided a new strategy combining the advantages of MOFs, QDs and MWCNTs materials for phenolic pollutants detection.

Four Fe-based metal-organic frameworks (MIL-101(Fe), MIL-53(Fe), MIL-88(Fe), and MIL-100(Fe)) were synthesized using a solvothermal method, and further characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy, Scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The synthesized Fe-MOFs were used to fabricate the modified carbon paste electrodes (CPE) for simultaneous detection of hydroquinone and catechol. Among the MILs (Fe) modified CPEs, MIL-101(Fe)/CPE exhibited extraordinary electrochemical sensitivity because of MIL-101 (Fe)’s excellent conductivity. The oxidation potential separation of hydroquinone and catechol achieved 190 mV. Compared with CPE, the oxidation currents of hydroquinone and catechol at MIL-101/CPE were 10-fold higher and the reduction currents were 5-fold higher. The linear range was 2 - 90 μM for hydroquinone and 2 - 100 μM for catechol, and the detection limit was 0.58 μM and 0.62 (S/N = 3) μM for hydroquinone and catechol. Furthermore, the application of MIL-101 (Fe)/CPE has been validated in an actual river water sample with the satisfied recoveries of 90.21 - 102.36% and 91.11 - 102.19% for hydroquinone and catechol, respectively.

Electropolymerization of L-lysine incorporating multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) dispersed in β -cyclodextrin prepolymer (CDP) solution was constructed a very efficient sensor. Scanning electron microscopy was employed to characterize the surface morphology of the modified electrode. The proposed sensor excellently enhanced the selectivity in the simultaneous determination of HQ and CC by differential pulse voltammetry and cyclic voltammetry. Comparing with bare GCE, MWCNTs/GCE, CDP-MWCNTs/GCE, the introduction of L-lysine polymer film effectively declined the shoulder peak of buffer soultion which seriously interfered the dection of hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol (CC) isomers. The PLL/CDP-MWCNTs/GCE displayed good discrimination ability and high sensitivity toward HQ and CC, peak-to-peak separation about 105 mV were obtained. The linear response range for hydroquinone and catechol were 0.1 μM – 100 μM. The detection limits of HQ and CC were 0.044 μM, 0.058 μM, respectively.

Cr(VI) and catechol are common pollutants in wastewaters of tannery industry. Cr(VI) reduction by catechol results in accumulation of Cr(V)-complex and toxic o -benzoquinone. Cr(VI) reduction can be enhanced by accelerating the electron transfer from catechol to Cr(VI) using Fe(III). This electron transfer allows the continuous production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in advanced oxidation processes, which further degrades catechol. However, the effects of catechol on Fe(III)-based Cr(VI) reduction and ROS production are not clear. In this study, the electron transfer pathway between catechol, Fe(III) and Cr(VI) was investigated along with the catechol degradation by ROS. Results show that the process of Cr(VI) reduction follows well a pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the activation energy decreases by 4189 J/mol after electrons are transferred by Fe(III). Aqueous chromium (50 mg/L) was completely precipitated as Cr(OH) 3 , Fe x Cr 1-x (OH) 3 or Fe(OH) 3 -Cr(OH) 3 at Fe(III) concentration of 10 mmol/L. Residual catechol and Fe(II) in wastewater activated percarbonate, thereby producing OH for over 480 min at pH 3.0 and generating OH and CO 3 − for over 5 min at pH 10.0. Catechol was degraded by these ROS to butenedioic, oxalic, and formic acids, which were then mineralized to H 2 O and CO 2 . Catechol (2 mmo/L) was fully removed from wastewater with TOC removal of 37%, and the degradation was not affected by SO 4 2− and Cl − . This study provides new insights into the removal of pollutants from wastewaters via electron transfer mediated by Fe(III), and may aid in controlling the toxic effects of Cr(VI) and catechol-like organics in natural and engineered aquatic systems.

Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease characterized by tooth loss and alveolar bone resorption. Bacteria are the original cause of periodontitis, and excess reactive oxygen species (ROS) encourage and intensify inflammation. In this study, a mussel-inspired and MnO2 NPs-reinforced adhesive hydrogel capable of alleviating periodontitis with improved antibacterial and antioxidant abilities was developed. The hydrogel was created by combining polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), 3,4-dihydroxy-d-phenylalanine (DOPA), and MnO2 nanoparticles (NPs) (named PDMO hydrogel). The hydrogel was demonstrated to be able to scavenge various free radicals (including total ROS─O2•– and OH•) and relieve the hypoxia in an inflammatory microenvironment by scavenging excess ROS and generating O2 due to its superoxide dismutase (SOD)/catalase (CAT)-like activity. Besides, under 808 nm near-infrared (NIR) light, the photothermal performance of the PDMO hydrogel displayed favorable antibacterial and antibiofilm effects toward Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Porphyromonas gingivalis (up to nearly 100% antibacterial rate). Furthermore, the PDMO hydrogel exhibited favorable therapeutic efficacy in alleviating gingivitis in Sprague–Dawley rats, even comparable to or better than the commercial PERIO. In addition, in the periodontitis models, the PDMO2 group showed the height of the residual alveolar bone and the smallest shadow area of low density among other groups, indicating the positive role of the PDMO2 hydrogel in bone regeneration. Finally, the biosafety of the PDMO hydrogel was comprehensively investigated, and the hydrogel was demonstrated to have good biocompatibility. Therefore, the developed PDMO hydrogel provided an effective solution to resolve biofilm recolonization and oxidative stress in periodontitis and could be a superior candidate for local drug delivery system in the clinical management of periodontitis with great potential for future clinical translation.

Compared with traditional anthraquinone oxidation, the photocatalytic 2-electron ORR is an environmentally friendly and efficient alternative to H2O2 production. Herein, low-temperature hydrothermally synthesized catechol-formaldehyde resin (CFR) microspheres were readily available as a green energy-saving catalyst, which has the ability to achieve the chemical conversion of O2 to H2O2 without the need for any external energy sources and electron donors. In order to further improve the catalytic performance, we propose a new design of a composite photocatalyst, namely CFR/NCDs-220, which improves the defects of CFR microspheres by combining with nitrogen-doped carbon dots (NCDs-220) of strong reducing ability with the assistance of sunlight, and has become a new candidate for the green and sustainable photoproduction of H2O2. The optimal catalyst produced 64 μmol H2O2 within 6 h under visible light irradiation with enhanced catalyst cycle stability and H2O2 selectivity owing to the photoexcited NCDs-220 acting as the electron donor for o-benzoquinone in the CFR microspheres. The solar-chemical conversion (SCC) efficiency of CFR/NCDs-220 for the photoproduction of H2O2 can reach 1.06% within 3 h without any sacrificial agent. The addition of NCDs-220 can achieve the reversible conversion of catechol and o-benzoquinone, thus ameliorating the photogeneration performance of H2O2 by the CFR microspheres. CFR/NCDs-220 exhibited a 2-electron reduction path in visible light and a heightened selectivity for H2O2 from 23% to 65%. This work highlights the use of solar-assisted NCDs-220 to power the CFR-chemically-catalyzed O2 to H2O2 conversion with long-term cycle stability, providing a simple strategy for the design of catalysts for H2O2 production.

Seroma formation and poor wound healing are common complications of many surgeries that create anatomical dead space (i.e., mastectomy), often causing tissue infection and even necrosis. Although negative pressure drainage and tissue adhesives are investigated to alleviate fluid accumulation post-surgery, however, their therapeutic efficacy remains unsatisfactory in most cases. Herein, the catechol-rich chemically crosslinked gelatin microspheres (ca-CGMSs) have been developed as biodegradable reconstructive implants for preventing seroma formation and concurrently promoting subcutaneous wound healing. Compared with the most representative hydrogel adhesive, i.e. commercial porcine fibrin sealant (PFS), the loosely packed ca-CGMSs with diameters range from 50 to 350 μm, provide numerous cell-adhesive interfaces and interconnected macro-pores for enhanced cell adhesion, proliferation and migration. Subcutaneous embedding trials show the in situ swelling aggregation and wet tissue adhesion of ca-CGMSs as well as their capacity in recruiting autologous cells in rat mastectomy models. The trials in rabbit mastectomy models demonstrate that, compared with PFS gluing, the implanted dried ca-CGMSs not only significantly inhibit seroma formation, but also achieve enhanced wound healing by inducing the formation of vascularized neo-tissue. The ca-CGMSs show a great potential to be the next-generation of restorative materials for both preventing seroma formation and healing subcutaneous wounds.

A novel poly(3,4-ethylenedioxy-thiophene) (PEDOT)/graphene oxide (GO) hybrid film was directly electrodeposited on a glassy carbon electrode. The SEM and TEM images of the as-obtained film revealed that PEDOT grew well on the surface of GO sheets with high affinity. The chemical structure of the composite was characterized by FT-IR, and the result conformed the formation of PEDOT doped by GO, leading to the enhanced electrochemical performance of the modified electrode. The composite modified electrode was utilized as an electrochemical sensor for the simultaneous detection of hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol (CT). It showed well electrocatalytic activity toward the redox of HQ and CT. Under the optimized condition, the response peak currents of the modified electrodes were linear over ranges from 2.5 to 200 μM for HQ and from 2 to 400 μM for CT. The sensor also exhibited good sensitivity with the detection limit of 1.6 μM for both HQ and CT, and good stability. This study provides a new kind of composite modified electrode for electrochemical sensors.

A signal-off-on probe of B-doped carbon quantum dot (B-CQD) is developed for ultrasensitive detection of catechol (CC) by fluorescence quenching and glutathione (GSH) by fluorescence recovering without any auxiliary of biomolecules or labeled materials. In this sensing system, the B-CQDs with a high quantum yield of 42% are prepared via a facile hydrothermal method with precursors of citric acid as C source and sodium tetraphenylborate as B source. The microstructure and fluorescence stability of the B-CQDs are investigated. Under the optimum conditions, the B-CQDs are highly sensitive for detecting CC with a linear range of 1–50 nM and a detection limit of 0.25 nM under a typical signal-to-noise ratio of 3 to 1 (S/N = 3), and for sensing GSH with a linear range of 2–100 nM and a detection limit of 0.5 nM (S/N = 3). Meanwhile, the developed B-CQDs show a good selectivity for sensing CC and GSH under high concentrations of interfering substances, such as biological thiols and amino acids. The B-CQDs are successfully applied to determination of CC in river water and GSH in human serum, where the recoveries are 103.3%–106.0% and 99.8%–106.3% for CC and GSH sensing, respectively. The signal-off-on mechanisms of the B-CQDs sensor are discussed.

Hydrogel-based flexible electronic devices have garnered significant attention due to their excellent mechanical properties, high electrical conductivity, and signal sensitivity. Nevertheless, internal water molecules crystallize inevitably at low temperatures, impairing the performance of hydrogels. Designing anti-freezing and tough hydrogels to meet long-term stability requirements is extremely challenging. A double physically crosslinked PVA/SA-g-DA/Fe 3+ hydrogel was fabricated using a two-step method. The coordination mode between catechol groups and ferric ions was modified by adjusting pH of soaking solution, subsequently regulating antifreeze performance and mechanical properties of the hydrogels. The obtained PVA/SA-g-DA/Fe 3+ hydrogel is stretchable, tough, and has a remarkable freeze tolerance (−42.21 °C). The hydrogels can be assembled into a strain sensor to monitor various human activities accurately at normal and low temperatures. This study proposes a strategy for designing hydrogels for supporting signal detection in cold environments.

Converting carbon dioxide into formic acid with formate dehydrogenase (FDH) as a catalyst is a gentle and eco-friendly process that not only conserves energy and reduces emissions but transforms waste into valuable resource. Enzyme immobilization is a common strategy for improving the stability and recyclability of enzyme, however, the procedures are usually complicated that include surface modification and binding reactions in order to form reliable linkages. Co-deposition of polydopamine (PDA) with polyethyleneimine (PEI) is a popular surface modification approach in versatile fields, but their co-deposition with enzymes is rarely reported. Herein, one-pot immobilization of FDH on SiO 2 nanoparticles based on catechol chemistry was attempted for the first time with or without PEI, and the resultant immobilized enzymes, FDH/PDA/PEI-SiO 2 and FDH/PDA-SiO 2 , were characterized, and the effects of the composition and deposition conditions on the catalytic performance were investigated. FDH/PDA-SiO 2 exhibited a higher apparent specific activity than FDH/PDA/PEI-SiO 2 , which was separately 0.167 and 0.136 mM/h/mg. The activity recovery rate was 464% and 378% of that of free enzyme. After 5 cycles, their relative activity was 82.3% and 87.4%. This research is significant in presenting a simple and high-efficient one-pot immobilization method that can be extended to other kinds of enzymes.

Mn AOS controlled the partitioning of catechol interfacial redox pathways. • Low-Mn AOS birnessite sustained late-stage catechol depletion and Mn release. • Persistent organic radicals revealed single-electron transfer during catechol oxidation. • Radical accumulation was decoupled from catechol depletion and Mn release. • Anions and organic acids reshaped Mn AOS -dependent interfacial reactivity. Phenolic compounds are reactive components involved in organic carbon transformation and contaminant fate in soils and sediments. Manganese oxides are important natural oxidants, yet how the Mn average oxidation state (Mn AOS ) regulates phenolic interfacial oxidation on birnessite remains unclear. Here, four birnessite samples with different Mn AOS values were synthesized, and catechol was used as a representative o-diphenolic compound to probe Mn AOS -dependent interfacial redox processes. All samples retained the layered δ-MnO 2 phase, whereas decreasing Mn AOS from 3.39 to 3.28 altered layer stacking, pore structure, local Mn–O environments, and initial electrochemical responses. Catechol was rapidly depleted in all systems with simultaneous dissolved Mn release. HB3 and HB4 showed stronger sustained transformation in the middle-to-late stage, with C t /C 0 decreasing to 0.09 and 0.07 at 360 min, respectively, and dissolved Mn reaching 3.02 and 3.13 mg L −1 . EPR detected oxygen-centered semiquinone-like persistent organic radicals near g = 2.0046, but radical intensities were not fully synchronized with terminal catechol depletion or Mn release. Post-reaction Raman, FTIR, SEM, and XPS further indicated organic deposition, Mn valence reduction, and changes in the surface morphology and oxygen environment. Weakly alkaline conditions enhanced catechol transformation, whereas HCO 3 - , HPO 4 2- , and citric acid suppressed the reaction. Overall, Mn AOS -dependent differences were observed in the stage-dependent coupling among catechol transformation, dissolved Mn release, persistent organic radical accumulation, and surface evolution. These findings identify Mn AOS as an important descriptor of birnessite interfacial reactivity toward phenolic compounds. Download: Download high-res image (195KB) Download: Download full-size image
