The electrochemical reduction of furfural (FF) offers a sustainable approach for producing value-added furfural alcohol (FA). Nevertheless, the limited adsorbed hydrogen (*H) generation capacity on Cu cathode restricts the reaction performance. Because the competitive adsorption of FF and *H decreases *H coverage and induces severe dimerization, most prior studies employed low FF concentrations (typically 20 mM) under constant potential conditions. In this work, carbon-supported Cu nanoparticles grown on Cu nanowire arrays (defined as Cu@Cu/C) were combined with constant current electrolysis for high-concentration FF reduction. A high Faradaic efficiency (72.9 %) and production rate (0.14 mmol cm −2 h −1 ) of FA were realized at −10 mA cm −2 , with a conversion of 98.1 %. Both the Faradaic efficiency and production rate can be sustained with gradual increases in current density or adjustments of FF concentration within a certain range, showing substantial enhancement relative to Cu-nano. Compared with pure Cu-nano, the favorable interaction between Cu nanoparticles and carbon support was certified to regulate the adsorption configuration and strength of FF, and enhance the *H generation performance, which optimizes the *H coverage at cathodic surface and promotes FF hydrogenation with *H via an electrocatalytic hydrogenation (ECH) mechanism. Overall, this work provides a simple and feasible strategy to promote interfacial *H, thus enhancing higher concentration hydrogenation of FF to FA by constant current electrolysis over Cu-based cathode.

Selective electrochemical hydrogenation of furfural (FFL) with high efficiency to produce important platform chemical (furfuryl alcohol) has great economic value and research significance. In this work, a novel and sustainable Pd/CuS@C catalyst derived from waste cooking oil (WCO) was prepared to catalyze the selective electrocatalyst hydrogenation (ECH) of FFL to furfuryl alcohol (FFA) for the first time. As expected, Pd/CuS@C catalyst was only active in C=O ECH to produce FFA in a >99 % selectivity, along with a >99 % conversion of FFL. Selective and stable ECH over time ensured up to six cycles. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicated that synergistic interaction between CuS and Pd(111) exhibited the high adsorption energies of H 2 and FFL. Overall, this research innovatively combined WCO treatment and FFL electrocatalytic upgrading, providing a green and environmentally friendly solution for sustainable energy conversion and electrochemical valorization of biomass derivatives.

BACKGROUND Maleic acid (MAc) is a high value-added oxygenic hydrocarbon derivative monomer. The synthesis of MAc from biomass-based furfural is a green process and has important academic research value. Herein, selective catalytic oxidation of renewable furfural to MAc was investigated. RESULTS The effect of using different heteropoly acids as catalyst and different organic acids/H 2 O as solvent was evaluated first, and the ‘phosphomolybdic acid + acetic acid/H 2 O’ composite system with good performance was screened out. Acetate anion acted as free radical acceptor in the reaction to stabilize furfural radical and inhibit the polymerization reaction. Under optimal reaction conditions, the conversion of furfural was 97.8%, and the MAc yield and selectivity were 58.3% and 59.6%, respectively. To further improve the selectivity of MAc, different kinds of Lewis acids were introduced to construct a Brønsted–Lewis dual-acid catalytic system. When Cu(OAc) 2 was as Lewis acid, the MAc selectivity was significantly improved to 72.5% with a furfural conversion of 72.3%. The catalytic mechanism of Brønsted–Lewis dual-acid system was finally clarified. CONCLUSION In this complex system, the synergy of Cu and Mo is responsible for the outstanding catalytic efficiency, where the Mo VI /Mo V redox can be facilitated by the redox of Cu II /Cu I with the assistance of O 2 ; acetate anion can interact with furfural radicals, thereby delaying the chain reaction of free radicals. This process makes the MAc generation reaction more dominant than the polymerization reaction, thus improving MAc selectivity. © 2025 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).

The reductive amination of biomass-derived furfural over non-noble metal catalysts represents a promising but challenging strategy for the sustainable synthesis of furfurylamine. Herein, we report mesoporous carbon supported CoZn bimetallic catalysts (CoxZny@MC) via a one-pot solvent evaporation induced self-assembly (EISA) method for high-efficiency reductive amination of furfural to furfurylamine with hydrous hydrazine (N2H4⋅H2O) as a nitrogen source. A complete conversion of furfural with a 97.5% yield of furfurylamine was achieved over bimetallic Co1Zn3@MC catalyst under mild conditions of 100 °C and 1.5 MPa H2 for 3 h. Furthermore, Co1Zn3@MC could be reused for at least five times with only a slight loss in activity. The excellent performance of the Co1Zn3@MC catalyst was mainly attributed to the introduction of moderate Zn species, which led to high dispersion of Co particles on the catalyst surface, as well as the abundant mesopores and high specific surface area of the catalyst. Moreover, a significant electron transfer from Zn species to Co centers occurs, which improves the inherent catalytic activity of the non-noble bimetallic catalyst by enhancing the electron density of Co particles.

Cellulose-based thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) have attracted considerable attention because of their rigid backbone, good mechanical properties, renewable nature and abundance. In the present study, sustainable TPEs based on ethyl cellulose (EC), fatty acid and furfural were generated by the combination of ATRP and “click chemistry”. To fabricate sustainable TPEs with higher toughness, a range of polymers, including mono random-copolymer poly(tetrahydrofurfuryl methacrylate- co -lauryl methacrylate) (P(THFMA- co -LMA), dual polymer side chains PTHFMA and PLMA, and mono-block copolymer PTHFMA- b -PLMA, were designed as side chains to fabricate EC brush copolymers with random, dual or block side chain architectures using the “grafting from” and “grafting onto” methods. The multi-armed structures, chemical compositions and phase separation of these EC brush copolymers were confirmed by FT-IR, 1 H NMR, GPC, DSC, TEM and SEM. Overall, three types of EC brush copolymers all exhibited the desired mechanical properties of TPEs. In addition, the EC brush copolymers with dual/block side chain architectures showed higher tensile strength than that of the random polymers with similar compositions.

The electrocatalytic hydrogenation (ECH) of biomass-derived furfural (FF) offers a sustainable route to furfuryl alcohol (FA). However, achieving high FA selectivity in near-neutral reaction systems remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we explore an effective electrostatic assembly strategy to regulate the surface properties and electronic conductivity of the electrocatalyst: Strandberg-type polyoxomolybdate ([Mo 5 P 2 O 23 ]·[Cu(phen)(H 2 O)] 3 ·5 H 2 O, abbreviated as Cu 3 P 2 Mo 5 , which act as electron sponges are anchored onto two-dimensional transition metal carbides (MXenes, specifically Ti 3 C 2 T x ). This unique architecture significantly facilitates electron transfer between the substrate and the catalyst. Under near-neutral aerobic conditions, Cu 3 P 2 Mo 5 @MXenes exhibits exceptional catalytic performance in the electroreduction of FF, achieving full conversion to FA within 6 h. Notably, the dispersed copper atoms display remarkable catalytic activity for FF reduction, delivering a FA yield exceeding 99% with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 559 h −1 . Furthermore, this system achieved enhanced conversion efficiency with a reduced quantity of active centers, highlighting its superior atomic utilization. Based on the results of experimental (control experiments, kinetic isotope effect studies, electrochemical analyses, spectroscopic characterization) and theoretical (DFT calculations) analyses, we systematically elucidate the electronic synergy between Cu-modified Cu 3 P 2 Mo 5 and MXenes. Modulated electronic interactions optimize adsorption of key carbon radical intermediates, thereby boosting FF electrocatalytic hydrogenation efficiency. This study offers critical insights into the rational design of high-performance POMs-based electrocatalysts, advancing their application in efficient biomass conversion.

The Maillard reaction enhances flavor in thermally processed infant formula (IF) yet generates furfural derivatives such as 2-furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), raising safety concerns. This study assessed the toxicity of these compounds using both wild-type and transgenic zebrafish models, while establishing quantitative concentration-specific toxicity relationships. Stored IF produced elevated levels of 2-furfural and 5-HMF compared to normal IF, leading to immune, nervous, and liver toxicity in exposed zebrafish. Both compounds induced immunotoxicity at maximum non-lethal concentrations and hepatotoxicity across tested doses. Notably, 5-HMF showed minimal neurotoxicity and gastrointestinal (GI) effects, while 2-furfural induced neurotoxicity at its lowest concentration and GI toxicity at 10 % lethal concentration (LC 10 ). Moreover, high levels of these compounds in powdered IF can elicit immune, hepatic, and neurotoxicity, but not GI toxicity, with differences from pure compounds likely attributable to the influence of the complex dairy matrix. To our knowledge, this is the first study using the zebrafish model to systematically evaluate the immunotoxicity, neurotoxicity, hepatotoxicity and GI effects of 2-furfural and 5-HMF, and to establish quantitative, concentration-dependent, organ-specific toxicity relationships. These findings reveal the safety risks of these Maillard-derived compounds and highlight the need to optimize thermal processing to reduce their formation and improve infant-formula safety.

In this study, the acid-base bifunctional magnetic ZrMg@Fe 3 O 4 metallic oxide catalysts with remarkable structural properties were synthesized by the co-precipitation method for the catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) of furfural (FF), ethyl levulinate (EL), and 5-methylfurfural (5-MF) to furfuryl alcohol (FFA), gamma-valerolactone (GVL), and 5-methyl-2-furanmethanol (5-MFA). Characterization results indicated that the ZrMg@Fe 3 O 4 (7: 1:1) catalyst possesses a substantial pore volume, large specific surface area, and mesoporous properties, which play an important role in improving catalytic activity. The leaching experiment indicated that the catalyst was not prone to leaching, proving its structural stability. The yield of FFA, GVL, and 5-MFA could be as high as 92.50%, 95.00%, and 53.95% by optimization experiments. The Py-FTIR, CO 2 -TPD, and poisoning experiments showed that Lewis acid-base sites significantly impact the catalytic activity. The catalyst can be readily isolated and retrieved from the liquid reaction mixture by applying the external magnetic field. The reaction mechanism and catalytic stability were also conducted by systematically studying the reaction experiments and physicochemical properties of the catalyst.

Graphical Microwave-assisted one pot cascade transformation of furfural to γ-valerolactone catalyzed by Sc(OTf) 3 . γ-Valerolactone (GVL) is considered as a star biochemical which can be used as a green solvent, fuel additive and versatile organic intermediate. In this study, metal triflate (M(OTf) n ) was utilized as the catalyst for one-pot transformation of furfural (FF) to GVL in alcohol media under microwave irradiation. Alcohol plays multiple functions including solvent, hydrogen donor and alcoholysis reagent in this cascade reaction process. And process efficiency of GVL production from FF upgrading is strongly related to the effective charge density of selected catalyst and the reduction potential of selected alcohol. Complex (OTf) n -M−O(H)R, presenting both Brønsted acid and Lewis acid, is the real catalytic active species in this cascade reaction process. Among various catalysts, Sc(OTf) 3 exhibited the best catalytic activity for GVL production. Various reaction parameters including the Sc(OTf) 3 amount, reaction temperature and time were optimized by the response surface methodology with the central composite design (RSM-CCD). Up to 81.2 % GVL yield and 100 % FF conversion were achieved at 143.9 °C after 8.1 h in the presence of 0.16 mmol catalyst. This catalyst exhibits high reusability and can be regenerated by oxidative degradation of humins. In addition, a plausible cascade reaction network was proposed based on the distribution of product.

Selectively converting fructose into furfural by H-beta catalyst is a very interesting catalytic process. However, it is a challenging task to clearly elucidate the roles of framework Al for selective scission of C C and C O bond. Herein, selective elimination of framework Al atoms is realized. Several detailed investigations showed that the framework Al species located in different sites play important role in furfural formation. The framework Al atoms of pristine H-beta mainly occupied at T1, T2, T5, T6 and T7 sites. These Al species at pore mouth can be removed by citric acid, while the treatment of nitric acid mainly eliminated the framework Al atoms from T2 and T7 sites. As for oxalic acid, the Al atoms occupied at T2, T5, T6 and T7 was primarily leached. Upon citric acid and nitric acid treatment afforded the similar yield of furfural, indicating that the formation of furfural could not be governed by these Al species at pore mouth, T2 and T7 sites. However, in the case of oxalic acid treatment, complete removal of the Al species on T2, T5, T6 and T7 sites decreased the yield of furfural. Thus, it is reasonably inferred that these Al atoms populated at T1 sites and intersecting channels is more encouraging for the splitting of C C bond, while the Al species occupied at T5, T6 sites and the larger straight channels is probably more favorable to scission of C O bond.

The direct conversion of furfural (FUR) to 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (2-MTHF) was investigated over a trimetallic CuNiRe/Hβ catalyst. Under optimal reaction conditions at 240 °C under 3 MPa H 2 for 1 h, almost complete conversion of FUR and high-yield of 2-MTHF (81 %) was achieved. This is the highest yield reported for the direct conversion of FUR to 2-MTHF. HR-TEM demonstrated that the growth of Cu nanoparticles (NPs) on the surface of Hβ was inhibited after loading Ni or Re resulted in the smaller Cu particle size and better hydrogenation and hydrodeoxygenation activity. H 2 -TPR characterization exhibited that the reducibility of bimetallic and trimetallic catalysts was higher than that of monometallic catalysts·NH 3 -TPD explained that Hβ acid sites mainly contributed to FUR deoxygenation. The adsorption configurations of FUR, furfuryl alcohol (FOL) and 2-methylfuran (2-MF) on the catalyst were revealed by ATR-IR. Catalyst evaluation and control experiments proved that FUR was first hydrogenated to FOL, followed by hydrodeoxygenation to 2-MF, and finally hydrogenated to 2-MTHF catalyzed by the combination of three metals.

Conversion of biomass-derived furfural (FFA) platform molecule to value-added tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol (THFA) molecule is a sustainable route using an efficient non-noble metallic catalyst in water solvent. In this work, Ni in various loadings on mesoporous titanium dioxide (m-TiO2) was synthesized in one pot by Evaporation-Induced Self-Assembly (EISA). The synthesised catalysts were evaluated for the hydrogenation of furfural to tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol. The catalysts were characterised using a combination of spectroscopic techniques such as XRD, H2-TPR, H2-TPD, XPS, SEM-EDX, TEM, and HR-TEM. The characterization results show that the Ni/m-TiO2materials exhibit enhanced electron-rich active sites, facilitated hydrogen spillover, uniform dispersion of small Ni particles (~5 nm), and strong metal support interaction between Ni and TiO2. Among the various Ni dopings, 7.5 wt.% Ni/m-TiO2catalyst exhibited the best performance and achieved 99.9% FFA conversion and 93.2% THFA selectivity in water solvent at 100 °C and under 2 MPa H2. Additionally, detailed kinetic studies, process parameters, the stability and reusability of the catalyst were also studied. The results demonstrated that the 7.5 wt.% Ni/m-TiO2catalyst is highly active and stable. Keywords:biomass;furfural hydrogenation;electron-rich Ni;SMSI;spillover
