Ethyl cellulose–coated phase change cenospheres: Coupled hydration heat regulation and interfacial strengthening in cementitious materials

Jin Li,Haoxiang Lyu,Yi Fang,Xueyan Liang,Peiyuan Chen,Jialai Wang

A novel EC-coated phase change microcapsule (EC-CenoPCM) was developed to prevent PCM leakage in cementitious materials. • EC coating (2 wt%) completely sealed perforated cenospheres while retaining a high melting enthalpy of 97.15 J/g. • EC-CenoPCM effectively regulated hydration heat via physical thermal buffering, delaying and attenuating exothermic peaks. • The EC shell enhanced capsule–matrix bonding, reduced harmful pores, and improved 28-day compressive strength. To enhance the thermal energy storage capacity of cementitious materials while overcoming phase change material (PCM) leakage and interfacial incompatibility, an effective microencapsulated PCM (MPCM) was developed using ethyl cellulose (EC)–coated paraffin-loaded perforated cenospheres (CenoPCM). Paraffin wax was first vacuum-impregnated into acid-etched cenospheres and subsequently sealed by an EC shell via a solvent evaporation process. Morphological and chemical characterizations confirmed that a continuous and compact EC coating was formed, with 2 wt% EC identified as the optimal concentration, completely preventing PCM leakage at 60 °C while retaining a melting enthalpy of 97.15 J/g. When incorporated into cement mortar as a partial sand replacement, EC-CenoPCM effectively regulated hydration heat through a physical heat-buffering mechanism associated with the solid–liquid phase transition of paraffin wax. Isothermal calorimetry and semi-adiabatic temperature rise tests revealed delayed and attenuated exothermic peaks without altering the cumulative hydration heat, indicating that hydration regulation primarily through the solid-liquid transition of PCM. Microstructural observations and pore structure analysis demonstrated that the EC coating significantly enhanced capsule–matrix interfacial bonding and reduced the proportion of harmful pores by suppressing leakage-induced defects. As a result, mortar containing 3 vol% EC-CenoPCM achieved a higher 28-day compressive strength (57.8 MPa) and a moderated reduction in thermal conductivity compared with mortars incorporating uncoated CenoPCM. These findings demonstrate that ethyl cellulose–coated cenospheres provide an effective and promising strategy for integrating latent heat storage into cementitious materials, enabling hydration heat regulation while preserving mechanical and thermal performance. This approach offers promising potential for hydration-temperature control in mass concrete and the development of thermally functional cementitious components.

Sulfonamide-based polymer grinding aids in slag grinding and their effect on hydration performance of cement

Kai Ke,Xiang Li,Yingbin Wang

Granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) is an industrial by-product with high latent activity generated during pig iron smelting, and its unique vitreous structure results in poor grindability. Therefore, activating the latent activity and improving the grindability of GBFS have become research hotspots in the relevant field. In this study, a low-molecular-weight polymer was synthesized using 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS), hydroxypropyl acrylate (HPA) and diethylene glycol monovinyl ether (DEGVE) as polymerizable monomers, and then compounded with polyhydric alcohol to prepare a polymer grinding aid suitable for GBFS. The effects of the polymer grinding aid on grinding efficiency and hydration properties of GBFS-blended cement paste were systematically investigated. The results showed that the particle size of GBFS ground with the polymer grinding aid was slightly coarser than that of the alkanolamine-treated sample. But the polymer grinding aid could optimize the cross-linked structure of hydration products and improve the early age and long-term strengths of GBFS-blended cement. When the dosages of initiator and chain transfer agent accounted for 1.28% and 5.14% of the total monomer mass, respectively, and the monomer molar ratio satisfied n (DEGVE):n (AMPS):n (HPA) = 1:2.65:0.5, the obtained polymer grinding aid provides a better balance between particle-size distribution optimization of GBFS and strength development of GBFS-blended cement, while the individual fineness parameters remain comparable to or slightly lower than the sample prepared with reference alkanolamine-based grinding aid. Compared with the alkanolamine-based grinding aids, the volume fractions of GBFS particles with particle sizes of 0–3 μm and above 64 μm treated by the polymer grinding aid decrease by 5.4% and 76.0%, respectively, while the volume fraction of particles with particle sizes of 32–64 μm increases by 12.2%. Correspondingly, the 7 d and 28 d compressive strengths of the GBFS-based cementitious materials are increased by 8.4% and 4.3%, respectively.

Towards understanding the interaction mechanism of Sintering, hydration and carbonation of calcium oxide during CO2 capture

Yuchuan Feng,Jingwei Jia,Nana Wang,Suxia Ma

Hydration activation is an effective approach to improve the cyclic reactivity and mitigate the sintering of CaO sorbents. However, the interaction mechanism between sintering, hydration and reactivity remains unclear. In this study, we conducted hydration experiments using ex-situ water treatment in a separate hydrator to investigate the role of sintering degree in the activation reaction, complemented by ReaxFF molecular dynamics simulations (ReaxFF-MD) to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. The results revealed that high-temperature calcination causes apparent sintering of CaO, leading to a decline in CO 2 adsorption capacity. Hydration treatment greatly enriches the specific surface area and pore structure, providing more active sites and channels for CO 2 adsorption, thereby enhancing carbonation performance. The hydration degree of CaO was found to be negatively correlated with the degree of sintering, but positively correlated with the improvement of pore structure and property activation. Two types of hydroxyl groups (direct hydroxyl O w H and indirect hydroxyl O s H) were rapidly generated. O w H can convert to O s H through re-decomposition, involving O* radicals and proton diffusion. The hydroxylation gradually weakened as the sintering intensified. During the CaO hydration reaction, three types of water were generated: free H 2 O, adsorbed H 2 O and dissociated H 2 O. Free H 2 O and adsorbed H 2 O continued to increase with the degree of sintering, while the associated H 2 O decreased. Sintering significantly limited the diffusion of H atoms and hindered O s H formation, resulting in an overall decline in hydroxylation. For hydrated samples, the evaporation of free water, desorption of adsorbed water, and decomposition of dissociated water occurred simultaneously during heating. These phase transitions directly impacted on the evolution of pore structure.

Paschen–Back effect modulation of SO42- hydration in magnetized electrolyte toward dendrite-free Zn-ion batteries

Yao Xiayan,Wang Zhi,Guo Jianwei,Qian Guoyu,Wang Hongchen,Gong Xuzhong,Wang Dong

Tuning anionic solvation structures and dynamic processes at solid–liquid interfaces is critical yet challenging for stabilizing Zn metal negative electrodes in Zn-ion batteries, particularly due to the issue of dendrite formation and hydrogen evolution reaction. Here, we show that highly hydrated SO 4 2- can be effectively modulated under a strong magnetic field via the Paschen–Back effect on O-H vibrations, which reorients individual water molecules to manipulate Zn 2+ solvation and protonated water clusters (H 3 O + ). Molecular dynamics simulations and in situ Raman spectroscopy reveal that the hydrated SO 4 2- –H 2 O complexes promote Zn 2+ nucleation and deposition on the (002) plane, with preferential oxygen adsorption inhibiting two-dimensional Zn 2+ diffusion. Moreover, magnetizing the electrolyte disrupts the Grotthuss proton-transfer pathway, suppressing H 2 evolution and further reducing dendrite formation. By employing inexpensive permanent magnets without external power, this magnetization strategy offers a practical, energy-efficient route to enhance both the stability and performance of zinc-based rechargeable batteries.

Fabrication of perovskite solar cells in ambient air by blocking perovskite hydration with guanabenz acetate salt

Yan Luyao,Huang Hao,Cui Peng,Du Shuxian,Lan Zhineng,Yang Yingying,Qu Shujie,Wang Xinxin,Zhang Qiang,Liu Benyu,Yue Xiaopeng,Zhao Xing,Li Yingfeng,Li Haifang,Ji Jun,Li Meicheng

The fabrication of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) in ambient air can accelerate their industrialization. However, moisture induces severe decomposition of the perovskite layer, limiting the device efficiency. Here we show that sites near vacancy defects absorb water molecules and trigger the hydration of the perovskite, eventually leading to the degradation of the material. We demonstrate that guanabenz acetate salt eliminates both cation and anion vacancies, blocking the perovskite hydration and allowing the crystallization of a high-quality film in ambient air. With guanabenz acetate salt, we prepare PSCs in ambient air with a certified efficiency of 25.08%. The PSCs without encapsulation maintain around 96% of their initial efficiency after 2,000 hours of ageing in ambient air and after 500 hours of operating at the maximum power point under simulated air mass (AM) 1.5 G solar light in a N 2 atmosphere. The encapsulated devices retained 85% of their initial efficiency after 300 hours under damp heat conditions (85 °C and 85% relative humidity).

Gelation behavior of egg white protein modulated by polysaccharide charge characteristics: Molecular mechanisms from hydration perspective

Can Wu,Rong He,Xinyu Liu,Qiuyue Hou,Bing Cui,Bin Zhou

This study systematically investigated the regulatory mechanisms of polysaccharides with distinct charge characteristics, including zwitterionic carboxymethyl chitosan, cationic chitosan, anionic carboxymethyl cellulose, and neutral hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, on the heat-induced gelation behavior of egg white protein. A combination of rheological measurements, water state analysis, texture characterization, and microscopic imaging was employed. The results demonstrated that anionic, cationic and neutral polysaccharides delayed gelation while promoting the development of tightly structured three-dimensional networks. In contrast, zwitterionic polysaccharides uniquely reduced gelation temperature and modified hydrogen bond distribution, thereby significantly enhancing water-holding capacity and producing softer gel textures. At the molecular level, it was found that the charge characteristics of polysaccharides influenced gel properties through two mechanisms involving the modification of system hydration states and the regulation of intermolecular interactions. These findings provide new insights into polysaccharide-protein interactions and offer potential strategies for precise texture modulation in protein-based food systems.

Performance of magnesium oxysulfate cement modulated by magnesium salt anions: Hydration products, microstructure, and stability analysis

Tingmin Zhu,Xiaoyang Chen,Yan Guan,Tian Zeng,Jun Chang,Zhiqi Hu,Kai Cui

Magnesium oxysulfate (MOS) cement is a cementitious material formed through the hydration reaction of light-burnt magnesia and magnesium sulfate solutions as the primary raw materials. During the construction process, harmful anions are easily introduced into MOS cement, affecting the formation of the main hydration product 517 phase. Therefore, to improve the adaptability of MOS cement to harmful anions and complex environmental changes, this study investigated the effects of adding magnesium salts containing various anions (Mg(OH) 2 , Mg(HCO 3 ) 2 , MgCl 2 ·6 H 2 O, Mg(NO 3 ) 2 ·6 H 2 O and MgHPO 4 ·3 H 2 O) on the properties of a hardened paste of magnesium oxysulfate (MOS) cement. Research has shown that the introduction of low levels of exogenous anions does not significantly disrupt the structure of the main hydration product 517 phase in MOS cement but rather promotes the formation of amorphous phases within the system. In the specific doping-modified MOS system, the grain size of the 517 phase changes, the stability of the material is enhanced, ion leaching is reduced, and the material has excellent compressive strength. X - (Cl - , HCO 3 - , NO 3 - , HPO 4 2- , OH - ) can partially replace SO 4 2- in the original structure of the 517 phase to form a phase similar to ‘X-517.’ The microstructure is reconstructed. In summary, the type and dosage of magnesium salt containing different anions have been demonstrated to have a significant effect on the hydration behavior, phase structure evolution and macroproperties of MOS cement systems.

Rebuilding Ocular Surface Lubrication with a Light-Triggered Hydration-Lubricating Nanoplatform for Dry Eye Disease Therapy

Yinuo Yang,Ning Zhu,Yisong Liu,Ziye Zhang,Weiwei Zhao,Hongyu Zhang

Dry eye disease (DED) is driven by tear film instability and increased blink-induced interfacial friction, exacerbating epithelial injury and inflammation. The conventional treatments, including artificial tears and hydrogel/contact-lens approaches, all fail to achieve sustained friction control due to limited lubrication durability, rapid clearance, surface dehydration, and foreign-body sensation. Here we developed a light-triggered hydration-lubricating nanoplatform (PAM@HK) that simultaneously restored ocular surface lubrication and enabled on-demand anti-inflammatory therapy. PAM@HK was assembled from an amphiphilic block copolymer that integrated a phosphorylcholine segment to form a robust hydration layer for hydration lubrication and an azobenzene hydrophobic segment for light-switchable honokiol (HK) release. The tribological tests under blink-relevant load and shear revealed that PAM achieved ultralow friction across macroscopic and microscopic scales, evidencing stable hydration lubrication. The near-infrared light irradiation triggered reversible photo-isomerization to greatly accelerate HK release on demand. In DED mouse model, PAM@HK markedly restored corneal integrity and tear film stability, increased tear secretion, preserved conjunctival goblet cells, and suppressed interleukin-6, reactive oxygen species, and pathological keratinization. This work positioned hydration lubrication as a primary therapeutic approach for DED and provided a new low-invasive, light-programmable strategy with superior durability and mechanistic relevance over conventional passive lubrication intervention.

Foldable and Hydration-Rigidified Acrylate Polymer for a Highly Stable and UV-Filtering Phakic Intraocular Lens

Yanhong Song,Yueze Hong,Jun Deng,Haoyu Zou,Jianyu Xin,Fanjun Zhang,Qing Jiang,Yunbing Wang

Phakic intraocular lenses (pIOLs) are widely used for myopia correction, but face challenges such as unfolding, displacement, glistenings, and bioadhesion. To address these issues, various transparent BPH polymers were synthesized by integrating hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMMA) with hydrophobic benzyl methacrylate (BzMA) and 2-hydroxy-4-(methacryloyloxy)benzophenone (HMBP). The prepared BPH materials exhibit high transparency, a tunable refractive index, and UV-filtering properties. With the integration of PEGMMA, the polymers exhibit a decreasing glass transition temperature (Tg) and modulus and an interesting hydration-induced rigidification due to microphase separation triggered by water uptake of hydrophilic PEG chain segments. This characteristic simultaneously endows the BPH pIOLs with the foldability essential for small-incision implantation and the rigidity required for enhanced stability after implantation. PEGMMA introduction also reduces glistenings and enhances hydrophilicity, improving resistance to protein, cell, and bacterial adhesion. In vitro cytotoxicity and in vivo subcutaneous implantation confirm their biosafety. The UV-filtering BPH platform resolves the foldability–stability trade-off and suppresses glistenings and bioadhesion, representing a promising option for pIOLs.

Synthesis of alite, belite and ferrite in both monophase and polyphase states and their hydration behavior

Fang Sun,Xueyu Pang,Jianqiang Wei,Jing Zeng,Jiacheng Niu

Understanding the synthesis process of Portland cement's various mineral phases and the phase interactions during hydration is highly critical for the design and optimization of cement-based materials. In this work, by using an optimized solid-state reaction method, three pure clinker phases (alite, belite and ferrite) and two polyphase phases (alite-belite and alite-ferrite-belite) of Portland cement were synthesized. The optimized method is featured with high-quality product yield, short burning time without regrinding or reburning. The factors that influence synthesis results, such as crystallinity/purity of the synthesized pure phases, were discussed based on X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) tests along with Rietveld refinement analysis with an external standard. The hydration behavior of the synthesized phases in monophase, polyphase as well as mixture states was investigated via isothermal calorimetry along with thermogravimetry and XRD. The results indicate that alite and belite have relatively little interactions during hydration, while the hydration rate of ferrite can be strongly inhibited in the presence of alite both in mixture and polyphase states.

Investigation of the Hydration of Nonfouling Material Poly(ethylene glycol) by Low-Field Nuclear Magnetic Resonance

Jiang Wu,Shengfu Chen

The strong surface hydration layer of nonfouling materials plays a key role in their resistance to nonspecific protein adsorption. Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) is an effective example of materials that can resist nonspecific protein adsorption and cell adhesion. Thus, the strong interaction between water molecules and PEG was investigated through each T2 component in water/PEG mixtures using multiexponential inversion of T2 relaxation time measured by the Carr–Purcell–Meiboom–Gill (CPMG) sequence of low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (LF-NMR). Results show that about one water molecule is tightly bound with one ethylene glycol (EG) unit, and additional water molecules over 1:1 ratio mainly swell the PEG matrix and are not tightly bound with PEG. This result was also supported by the endothermic behavior of water/PEG mixtures measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It is believed that the method developed could be also applied to investigate various interactions between macromolecules and other small molecules without using deuterium samples, which might open a novel route to quantitatively measure guest–host interactions in the future.

A novel green catalytic strategy for hydration of α-pinene by a natural deep eutectic solvent

Zhang Dongqiang,Chen Xiangyun,Yuan Bing,Yu Fengli,Xie Congxia,Yu Shitao

Hydration of α-pinene catalyzed by a natural deep eutectic solvent (NADES) prepared by oxalic acid dihydrate (OA·2H 2 O) and betaine (Bet), 2.7OA·2H 2 O/Bet, has been studied to develop a more economical and green process for one-step hydration method. It has been found that a homogeneous ternary DES system could be established with OA·2H 2 O and Bet in a simple, convenient, and atomic economy way. Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FT-IR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H NMR), thermogravimetry (TG), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) have been applied to confirm the formation of hydrogen bonding between OA, H 2 O, and Bet. With the consideration of catalytic activity, selectivity, and ability to recycle, 2.7OA·2H 2 O/Bet has been screened out to be a promising catalyst for hydration of α-pinene due to its appropriate acidic properties and solubility. In this catalytic system of hydration, water, as one of the reactants, both assisted in the formation of DES and acted as the dispersing agent. Correspondingly, an “emulsifying reaction at the reaction temperature and solid-liquid separation below room temperature” characteristic of this specific catalytic hydration of α-pinene has been achieved.
