A porous carbon material doped with an iron species (Fe/PC) was prepared by carbonizing a mixture of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 in the presence of iron(II) ions. The resulting material was characterized by X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption isotherms, transmission electron microscopy, and by Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Fe/PC was the deposited on the surface of glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to obtain a sensor for amperometric determination of phenolic compounds. The unique catalytic activity, good electrical conductivity and hierarchical structure of the Fe/PC composite results in good electrooxidative activity towards hydroquinone (HQ; typically at 44 mV) and catechol (CC; typically at 160 mV). Under optimal conditions, the amperometric responses are linear in the range from 0.1 to 120 μmol · L −1 for HQ, and from 1.0 to 120 μmol · L −1 for CC. The respective detection limits are 14 and 33 nmol · L −1 . The sensor is highly selective against potential interferents and was successfully applied to the determination of HQ and CC contents in (spiked) water samples.
An amperometric sensor for phenolic compounds was constructed by using a metal-organic framework derived iron doped porous carbon material.

A highly sensitive and convenient high-performance liquid chromatography technique coupled with chemiluminescence detection for the simultaneous determination butylated hydroquinone (TBHQ) and butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) in oil is established. The detection is based on the inhibitory effect on the CL reaction between luminol and potassium ferricyanide in an alkaline medium. Samples were separated through a reverse-phase C 18 column using a mobile phase of methanol and water (80: 20, v/v) at a flow rate of 0.5 mL/min. The effects of various parameters including mobile phase, flow rate and chemiluminescence regent were studied. Under optimum conditions, both TBHQ and BHA showed good linear relationships in the range 1 × 10 -7 –1 × 10 -5 g/mL with detection limits of 24 and 33 ng/mL, respectively. The proposed method is simple and sensitive, with low costs. The method was successfully applied for the quantification of TBHQ and BHA in sesame oil. The possible inhibition mechanism is also discussed briefly. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The 4[(Tetrahydro‑2H‑pyran‑2‑yl) oxy] phenol (XG‑d) hydroquinone analog, is found in Vaccinium vitis‑idaea L. Although it is known for its antioxidant properties and high level of safety, its antitumor activity remains to be elucidated. In the present study, the anticancer effect of XG‑d was determined in vitro and in vivo. The cytotoxicity of XG‑d against C26 murine colon carcinoma cells was found to occur in a time‑ and concentration‑dependent manner, whereas little effect was observed in the two normal cell lines (HK‑2 and L02) investigated. Oral administration of XG‑d (100 mg/kg) had effects on the tumor growth of tumor‑bearing mice. Furthermore, marked apoptosis was observed using Hoechst 33258 staining and flow cytometric analysis with annexin V/propidium iodide double staining. XG‑d also downregulated the expression of B‑cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl‑2), increased the expression levels of Bcl‑2‑associated X protein and activated caspase‑9, caspase‑3 and poly(adenosine diphosphate‑ribose) polymerase. The present study demonstrated for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, that XG‑d inhibited cancer cell growth via the induction of apoptosis and was also able to inhibit tumor growth in vivo. These results demonstrated that XG‑d may be used as a potential natural agent for cancer therapy with low toxicity.

Micromotors have great potential in environmental monitoring and treatment. Herein, ZIF-67 derived Co3O4–CeO2 micromotors with a porous nanocage structure were synthesized by the ingenious combination of template scarification and calcination methods. Co3O4 inherited the typical porous structure of the ZIF-67 precursor and its skeleton offered a substrate for uniform in situ growth of CeO2 nanoparticles. The ZIF-67 derived Co3O4–CeO2 revealed a unique nanocage structure with a broken corner, resulting in the autonomous movement in the presence of H2O2. Based on the combination of peroxide-like activity, self-propelled motion and photo-Fenton like performance, a strategy to selectively and sensitively detect and quickly remove hydroquinone (HQ) from water was established. Taken together, this novel Co3O4–CeO2 nanocage-based micromotor could be effectively harnessed for water treatment.

Graphene–chitosan composite film modified glassy carbon electrode was prepared and characterized. The fabricated electrode showed excellent electrochemical catalytic activities towards the oxidation of catechol (CT), resorcinol (RS) and hydroquinone (HQ). The oxidation overpotentials of CT, RS and HQ decreased significantly and the corresponding oxidation currents increased remarkably compared with those obtained at the bare GCE and chitosan modified GCE. Some kinetic parameters , such as the electron transfer number ( n ), proton transfer number ( m ), charge transfer coefficient ( α ) and the apparent heterogeneous electron transfer rate constant ( k s ), were calculated. Differential pulse voltammetry was used for the simultaneous determination of CT, RS and HQ in their ternary mixture . The peak-to-peak potential separations between CT and RS, RS and HQ, and HQ and CT were 0.388, 0.484 and 0.096 V, respectively. The calibration curves for CT, RS and HQ were obtained in the range of 1 × 10 −6 to 4 × 10 −4 , 1 × 10 −6 to 5.5 × 10 −4 and 1 × 10 −6 to 3 × 10 −4 mol L −1 , respectively. The detection limits were 7.5 × 10 −7 mol L −1 ( S / N = 3).

NiFe PBA exhibits laccase-mimic for ORR and electrocatalyze oxidation of CC and HQ. • A self-powered sensor by assembling NiFe PBA as both anode and cathode catalyst. • The sensor capable of detecting CC or HQ in simulated wastewater satisfactorily. Biofuel cells are widely applied in designing self-powered sensors (SPS) due to their rich fuel source, environmental friendliness, and advantages in operating under neutral pH and room temperatures. However, they are limited by inherent drawbacks of biological enzymes as catalysts, such as poor stability and high costs, greatly restricting their real applications. Herein we report on NiFe Prussian blue analogue (PBA) nanocubes with good mimicking laccase activity, which can not only exhibit excellent oxygen reduction reaction in the absence of electron mediators, but also efficiently electrocatalyze the oxidation of phenolic fuels. Subsequently, a dual-chamber enzyme-free fuel cell was constructed using NiFe PBA as both the anode and cathode catalysts as well as catechol (CC)/hydroquinone (HQ) as the fuel. Based on this, a SPS was developed to detect CC or HQ. The maximum power density ( P max ) of the HQ-fueled sensor is linear within 0.5 μM–5 mM HQ in three parts. Similarly, the P max for CC-fueled sensor is linear with 5 μM–5 mM CC in three parts. Moreover, the sensor has excellent selectivity and is capable of monitoring simulated wastewater. Thus, this work demonstrates an efficient enzyme-free biofuel cells based SPS using the same nanomaterial as anode and cathode catalyst. In this work, a mixture of carbon materials was prepared by simple and fast method based on electrolyzing graphite rod in KNO 3 solution under the constant current. The transmission electron microscope (TEM) indicated that the mixture was comprised of graphene nanosheets and carbon nanoparticles, and some carbon nanoaprticles were adsorbed on the surface of graphene nanosheet. The mixture modified glassy carbon electrode showed excellent catalytic and adsorptive ability towards the redox of hydroquinone (HQ). The effect factors, such as pH, scan rate, accumulation time and accumulation potential, were optimized. The chronocoulometry investigation demonstrated that the mixture can effectively increase the electrochemical active surface. Under the optimal determination conditions, the oxidation peak current was proportional to HQ concentration in the range of 0.1–100 and 100–600 μM. The detection limit was estimated to be 0.01 μM ( S / N = 3). The developed electrode was further applied to determine HQ in soil samples with satisfactory results.

Hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol (CC) are important chemical raw materials in the modern industry, unfortunately, which are also high toxic phenolic pollutants. So how to achieve highly sensitive and selective determination HQ and CC is the challenge we face. In the present work, we report a facile strategy to obtain nitrogen and phosphorous co-doped glucose-derived carbon coated CoP nanowires (G-CoP/N,P–C NWs), in which nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) was as the chelating reagent, glucose was as carbon source, and the precursors were subsequently experienced carbonization and phosphorization process. G-CoP/N,P–C NWs can shorten the distance of the electron transport and expand the reaction area, showing the intriguing electronic conductivity and electrocatalytic abilities. An electrochemical phenolic sensor based on G-CoP/N,P–C NWs is fabricated. The as-prepared sensor showcases the good sensing performance for HQ and CC with comparative linearity ranges of 0.8–900 μM (HQ) and 0.6–800 μM (CC), low limits of detections (LODs) of 0.18 μM (S/N = 3) and 0.12 μM (S/N = 3) for HQ and CC, respectively. Notably, it also displays excellent practical application for the recognition of HQ and CC in the rain water, the tap water , the domestic wastewater and the lake water, which may be a promising candidate in environmental water monitoring and drinking water safety.

A novel multifunctional Janus magnetic micromotor was designed and constructed by using MIL-100(Fe)@TiO2@Fe3O4 multicore–shells modified with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) as a smart active platform to realize detection and degradation of hydroquinone (HQ). The obtained micromotor showed a unique three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical architecture with highly exposed active sites and could autonomously move at a speed of 140 ± 7.0 μm·s–1 by O2 bubbles generated from the catalytic decomposition of H2O2 fuel. Benefiting from the combination of active self-propulsive motion, high peroxidase-like activity, tuned heterojunctions with matching band structures, and a 3D hierarchical structure, an effective platform involving dynamically sensitive detection and quick removal of HQ from water was established by using the multifunctional HRP-integrated MIL-100(Fe)@TiO2@Fe3O4 Janus micromotor. The proposed multifunctional Janus magnetic micromotor had advantages of simple and feasible fabrication, sensitive detection and effective photo-Fenton degradation of HQ in a wide pH range of 4–7, and magnetic recycling, revealing potential for environmental remediation applications.

This article describes a nonenzymatic chemiluminescence resonance energy transfer (CRET) system for highly sensitive determination of hydroquinone. It was found that the Co(II)-catalyzed luminescence of luminol in pH 11.5 solution is transferred to CdTe quantum dots (QDs) via a CRET mechanism. Hydroquinone is oxidized by H 2 O 2 to benzoquinone which quenches the fluorescence of the QDs. The enhancement is attributed to the adsorption of Co(II) on the surface of the negatively charged QDs. The CRET system was applied in an assay for hydroquinone that has a detection limit of 0.17 nmol L −1 . The detection limit was lower by factors between 100 and 250,000 than earlier reported methods. The assay was successfully applied to the quantitation of hydroquinone in (spiked) water samples, with recoveries ranging from 95 % to 106 %, and relative standard deviations between 0.5 % and 2.4 %.
A Co(II)-luminol-H 2 O 2 -quantum dot chemiluminescence resonance energy transfer system was developed for highly sensitive detection of hydroquinone. Strong signals were observed due to energy transfer between luminol donor and CdTe quantum dots which is catalyzed by Co(II).

A copper sulfide nanoflakes-decorated carbon nanofragments-modified glassy carbon electrode (CuS-CNF/GCE) was fabricated for the electrocatalytic differentiation and determination of hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol (CC). The physicochemical properties of the CuS-CNF were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The electrocatalytic determination of HQ and CC over the CuS-CNF/GCE was evaluated by cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry. An excellent detection limit and sensitivity of the CuS-CNF/GCE are obtained (0.293 µM and 0.259 µM) with a sensitivity of 184 nA µM−1cm−2and 208 nA µM−1cm−2(S/N=3) for HQ and CC, respectively. In addition, the CuS-CNF/GCE shows a selective identification of HQ and CC over potential interfering metal ions (Zn2+, Na+, K+, NO3−, SO42−, Cl−) and organic compounds (ascorbic acid, glucose), and a satisfactory recovery is also obtained in the spiked water samples. These results suggest that the CuS-CNF/GCE can be used as an efficient electrochemical sensor for the simultaneous determination of co-existing environmental pollutants such as HQ and CC in water environments with high selectivity and acceptable reproducibility. Keywords:carbon nanofragments;copper sulfide;catechol;hydroquinone;electrochemical sensor;simultaneous determination

We describe an electrochemical sensor for simultaneous determination of hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol (CC). A glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was modified with gold nanoparticles, L-cysteine, and ZnS/NiS@ZnS quantum dots using a layer-by-layer technique. The materials were characterized by X-ray diffractometry, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and electrochemical impedance and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry revealed this modified GCE to represent a highly sensitive sensor for the simultaneous determination of HQ and CC. The anodic peak current for HQ at a working voltage of 80 mV (vs. Ag/AgCl) is related to its concentration in the 0.1 to 300 μM range (even in the presence of 0.1 mM of CC). The anodic peak current for CC at a working voltage of 184 mV is related to its concentration in the 0.5 to 400 μM range (even in the presence of 0.1 mM of HQ). The detection limits (at an S/N ratio of 3) are 24 and 71 nM for HQ and CC, respectively. The modified GCE was successfully applied to the determination of HQ and CC in aqueous solutions and gave satisfactory results.
A glassy carbon electrode was modified with gold nanoparticles, ZnS/NiS@ZnS quantum dots and L-cysteine and used for simultaneous determination of hydroquinone and catechol.
