Efficient Catalytic Hydrogenation of Lignin-Derived Phenolics Under Mild Conditions

Yumeng Song,Ping Chen,Hui Lou,Xiaoming Zheng,Xiangen Song

This paper studies the catalytic hydrogenation reduction of lignin-derived phenolic compounds, such as catechol, guaiacol (O-methoxyphenol), phenol, P-methylphenol, O-ethylphenol, O-ethoxyphenol, etc. The reaction system focuses on the catalytic performance of hydrodeoxygenation reactions involving the phenolic derivatives of the lignin depolymerization products catechol and guaiacol. A series of Al2O3-TiO2composite oxide supports with different Al/Ti ratios were prepared by a co-precipitation method, and a 5% Pd/Al2O3-TiO2bifunctional catalyst was prepared by an impregnation method and characterized with XRD, SEM, BET, NH3-TPD, etc. Among these, the Pd/Al2Ti1catalyst had the most excellent catalytic performance. At 100 °C and 2 MPa hydrogen pressure, the conversion of catechol was as high as 100%, and at 100 °C and 5 MPa hydrogen pressure, the conversion of guaiacol reached 90%.

In-situ growth of graphene on carbon nanofiber from lignin

Xiaohan Wang,Yukun Zhu,Xueqin Wang,Guiju Liu,Junzhi Li,Renhai Zhao,Yuanming Zhang,Xiaoli Zhang,Guangting Han,Haiguang Zhao,Jianyong Yu

Design and synthesis of heterostructured carbon nanofibers is significant for applications in the field of optoelectronics , conductors and catalytic devices. Although lignin has been widely used as building blocks for fabricating nanofibers , it is still very challenging to synthesize conducting heterostructured carbon nanofibers without using additional catalysts. Herein, we first in-situ grew graphene grafted carbon nanofibers (G/CNFs) using calcium lignin sulfonate as starting materials without addition of catalysts. Through the electrospinning, pyrolysis and washing procedure, the as-spun nanofibers are converted into the flexible G/CNFs films. The in-situ formed CaS nanoparticles serve as catalysts for the growth of graphene on the surface of the CNFs, when the carbonization temperature is over 1100 °C. The as-prepared G/CNFs films exhibit superior electronic conductivity of 2377.9 S m −1 , which is comparable to the values reported in the literature. As a proof-of-concept, the as-fabricated lithium-sulfur battery exhibits a high discharge of 808.7 mAh·g −1 after 600 cycles at 0.2 C by using the G/CNFs membrane as stand-alone and flexible sulfur cathode scaffolds. This work represents a promising new approach for designing heterostructured graphene/CNFs using low-cost lignin precursors, and provides significant insights for the sustainable development of CNFs in numerous applications.

Interfacial Lignin–Montmorillonite Fillers to Strengthen Biodegradable Polyester Packaging Films

Luo Lixin,He Hui,Wang Zining,Wang Xiaoping,Xie Dong,Li Qunyang

Conventional petroleum-based food packaging plastics cause serious environmental pollution, driving demand for high-performance, fully biodegradable green packaging materials. Blends of poly(butylene adipate- co -terephthalate) (PBAT) and poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC) are promising alternatives for eco-friendly food packaging due to good flexibility, film-forming performance, and biodegradability. Nevertheless, poor gas-barrier, mechanical, and UV-shielding properties restrict their practical applications. In this study, quaternized alkali lignin (QAL) and alkyl-grafted quaternized lignin (QAC) were assembled with organo-montmorillonite (OMMT) to prepare quaternized alkali lignin-organo-montmorillonite (QAL-OM) and alkyl-grafted quaternized lignin-organo-montmorillonite (QAC-OM) hybrid fillers, which were added into the PBAT/PPC matrix at low contents. Benefiting from the UV absorption of lignin and the physical barrier of OMMT platelets, the modified composites exhibited enhanced mechanical barrier and UV-shielding performances with retained processability. At 0.7 wt % filler content, the oxygen permeability of PBAT/PPC/QAL-OM and PBAT/PPC/QAC-OM films was reduced by 25.71% and 27.11% to 71.46 and 70.11 cc·mm/(m 2 ·day), respectively; their water vapor permeability decreased by 24.12% and 38.16% to 1.73 and 1.41 g·mm/(m 2 ·day), respectively. QAC-OM showed better barrier performance because its long alkyl chains promoted OMMT intercalation and formed compact interfacial structures. Fruit preservation tests on bananas and litchis verified that the composite films retarded fruit deterioration and weight loss, proving great potential for biodegradable food packaging.

Lignin-Regulated Amphiphilic Janus Membrane for Eco-Friendly Electronic Skin

Yuan He,Haichuan Ye,Cuihuan Li,Haichao Li,Yucheng Hu,Guohua Miao,Tingting You,Sheng Chen,Feng Xu

Eco-friendly electronic skin fabricated from sustainable natural materials represents a pivotal technology for advancing healthcare and sports-oriented wearable electronics, yet balancing comfort and electronic functionality remains challenging due to inadequate moisture management. Herein, we report an eco-friendly lignin-regulated amphiphilic Janus membrane (LAJM)-based pressure sensor that synergistically integrates unidirectional water transport with exceptional sensing performance. Through sulfonation and fluorination modifications of lignin fractions with distinct hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties, we engineer an electrospun layer with controlled hydrophobic-hydrophilic gradients, enabling unidirectional water transport while maintaining a dry and comfortable microenvironment. Moreover, LAJM demonstrates notable biocompatibility, antibacterial efficacy, and antioxidant properties, positioning it as a promising candidate for intelligent wound care systems. The LAJM-based pressure sensor achieves integrated sensing capabilities through its hierarchical structure, exhibiting a high sensitivity of 23.97 kPa−1 in the 0–20 kPa range, an extended operational range (0–200 kPa), and ultrafast response dynamics (22 ms response/31 ms recovery). These metrics enable robust continuous monitoring of vital signs (e.g., radial pulse waveforms), discrimination of voice patterns, and precise motion trajectory mapping under dynamic conditions. This technological breakthrough in lignin valorization establishes a scalable platform for next-generation breathable epidermal electronics, with transformative implications for AI-driven healthcare diagnostics and adaptive human-machine interfaces.

Lignin nanoparticle-reinforced chitosan hydrogels for enhanced solar evaporation performance

Siquan Wu,Xuan He,Xianjiao Wang,Liheng Chen,Jianglin Liu,Shuai Zhao,Xuliang Lin

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation requires photothermal materials that combine efficient solar absorption, continuous water transport, and resistance to salt accumulation. Herein, a lignin nanoparticle-reinforced chitosan hydrogel evaporator (LPCH) was constructed by integrating alkali lignin nanoparticles into a chemically cross-linked chitosan network. The uniformly dispersed lignin nanoparticles functioned as photothermal and nanoreinforcing domains, enhancing light harvesting and increasing the surface temperature to 39.5 °C under 1 sun irradiation. Interactions between the hydroxyl-rich lignin nanoparticles and chitosan regulated the water state within the hydrogel network, increasing the intermediate-water-to-free-water ratio from 0.35 for the chitosan hydrogel (CS) to 1.24 for LPCH and lowering the equivalent evaporation enthalpy to 2085 J g −1 . The optimized LPCH evaporator achieved an evaporation rate of 2.77 kg m −2  h −1 under 1 sun irradiation, together with an apparent solar-to-vapor efficiency of 152.4%. It retained an evaporation rate of 2.29 kg m −2  h −1 in 10 wt% saline water and maintained continuous operation over 10 h in simulated seawater. Outdoor tests using real seawater produced a peak evaporation rate of 3.47 kg m −2  h −1 and a daytime average rate of 2.38 kg m −2  h −1 . These results demonstrate a sustainable strategy for combining lignin-derived photothermal conversion, water-state regulation, and structural reinforcement in biomass-based solar evaporators.

Intermolecular Force Quantification for Deciphering Lignin Dissolution Behavior in Solvents

Qiyu Liu,Haiping Guo,Yile Li,Wenli Zhang,Fangbao Fu,Xueqing Qiu

Lignin, the most abundant aromatic polymer in nature, holds immense potential for sustainable chemical production. Deciphering lignin dissolution behavior is essential for suitable solvent selection and achieving efficient conversion. However, the high heterogeneity of lignin and the complex interaction between lignin and solvents increase the difficulty in understanding dissolution behavior. To address this issue, in this work, an intermolecular force quantification method was proposed to establish the correlation between microscopic adhesion force and macroscopic solubility using atomic force microscopy (AFM). By engineering a stable lignin-coated AFM probe/substrate system (thickness >100 nm) via electrostatic adsorption, a precise lignin adhesion force quantification system was successfully established. As adhesion forces decreased from 0.106 to 0.026 mN/m, the lignin solubility surged from 0.06 to 168.49 g/L, indicating a strong relevance. Therefore, the lignin solubility can be readily evaluated via adhesion force quantification. Strikingly, a universal critical adhesion force (0.43 mN/m) across diverse lignin types (enzymatic hydrolysis lignin; alkaline lignin) and solvent systems (γ-valerolactone (GVL)/H2O, dioxane/H2O, acetone/H2O) has been identified, beyond which negligible dissolution occurs. This constant serves as a quantitative ″dissolution threshold″, offering a rapid tool to screen optimal solvents. This work bridges intermolecular force quantification with solubility prediction, advancing rational solvent design for lignin valorization.

Multilamellar spherical micelles of alkali lignin: dissipative particle dynamics simulations

Zhu Guodian,Shang Jingqi,Wen Weihong,Li Yuanyuan,Yin Guoqiang

Context Lignin has an immense potential for the production of lignin-based functional materials. In this work, effect of 2-chloro-ethyltrimethyl ammonium chloride (AC)-grafted alkali lignin (AL) on the morphologies in water was investigated by dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulations. The results showed that AL molecules formed spherical micelles, but the corresponding phenylpropane units of AL were randomly distributed in spherical micelles. However, AC-grafted modification of phenolic hydroxyl groups in AL led to the formation of multilamellar spherical micelles. The formation of multilamellar spherical micelles of AL mainly went through four stages: small clusters, larger aggregates with a core-shell structure, trilaminar, and multilamellar spherical micelles. AL molecules resulted in dimethomorph molecules being randomly distributed in the spherical micelle, while the dimethomorph molecules were perfectly entrapped into the spherical micelles of AC-grafted AL. Various molecular weights of AL had no effect on the formation and size of multilamellar spherical micelles. With increasing the content of AC-grafted AL, small clusters, multilamellar spherical micelles, tube-like, and lamellar aggregates were observed successively. This work highlights the potential of lignin to prepare monodispersed lignin-based functional colloidal spheres. Methods Coarse-grained beads were performed energy minimization, geometric optimization, NPT ensemble (298 K and 1.0 bar), and NVT ensemble (298 K) calculations. DPD simulations were carried out at 300,000 steps in a 30×30×30 Rc 3 cubic box with Materials Studio 7.0 program.

Oxygen-enriched lignin-derived porous carbon nanosheets promote Zn2+ storage

Hanfang Zhang,Lingchao Wang,Yihe Zhang,Yanran Liu,Jiahe Zhang,Li Sun,Feng Feng,Yingge Zhang

Carbon-based zinc-ion capacitors (ZICs) have sparked intense research enthusiasm because of large power density, good rate capability and cycling stability. However, there is still a long way to go before they achieve commercial applications. Herein, oxygen-enriched lignin-derived porous carbon nanosheets (OLCKs) were prepared by one-step carbonization-activation method, and more O-containing functional groups were generated on the surface of the porous carbon by post-surface functionalization strategy. The self-doped N can change the electron distribution of carbon skeleton and decrease energy barrier of chemical absorption of Zn 2+ /H + . Meanwhile, the carbonyl group can significantly enhance the wettability of OLCKs. Furthermore, the diffusion-controlled reactions mainly exist at high and low potential ranges in CV curves, which demonstrates the occurred Faradaic reaction. Consequently, the assembled aqueous ZICs based on OLCKs demonstrate a capacity of 121.7 mAh/g at 0.3 A/g, energy density of 94.3 Wh kg −1 and good cyclic stability. Besides, the assembled Zn//PVA/LiCl/ZnCl 2 (gel)//OLCK4 ZIC can also achieve energy density of 134.4 Wh kg −1 at 0.1 A/g. This work provides a novel design strategy by incorporating abundant O and N -containing functional groups to enhance energy density.

Alkylation modification for lignin color reduction and molecular weight adjustment

Xiao Jiang,Zhongjian Tian,Xingxiang Ji,Hao Ma,Guihua Yang,Ming He,Lin Dai,Ting Xu,Chuanling Si

The application of industrial kraft lignin is limited by its low molecular weight, dark color, and low solubility. In this work, an efficient crosslinking reaction with N,N-Dimethylformamide (DMF) and 1,6-dibromohexane was proposed for adjusting the molecular weight and color of lignin. The chemical structure of alkylation lignin was systematically investigated by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), ultraviolet spectroscopy , Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and 2D heteronuclear single quantum correlation nuclear magnetic resonance (HSQC NMR) spectra. After the alkylation modification, the molecular weights of the lignin were increased to 1643%. The resinol (β-β), β-aryl ether (β-O-4), and phenylcoumaran (β-5) linkages were still the main types of the linkages. The formation of β-β linkage would be inhibited at high temperatures. The color reduction of lignin can be attributed to the low content of chromophores and low packing density. This alkylation lignin will be a new and general approach for developing molecular weight-controlled and light-colored lignins, which can find more applications in cosmetics, packing, and other fields.

Alkylated lignin with graft copolymerization for enhancing toughness of PLA

Zhang Nan,Zhao Man,Liu Guangfa,Wang Jiaoyang,Chen Yunzhi,Zhang Zhengjian

A green modification method for effectively enhancing toughness of PLA was established. Herein, alkaline lignin (LG) was firstly alkylated with dodecane, and then grafted with lactide (LA). The alkylated lignin-lactide graft copolymer (GLG-g-LA) was obtained via ring-opening polymerization (ROP). GLG-g-LA copolymer can be utilized as a functional filler to toughen polylactic acid (PLA) packaging film. The 31 P-NMR of alkylated lignin (GLG) demonstrated that the peak of phenolic hydroxyl groups disappeared completely, while the relative peak intensity of carboxyl hydroxyl groups decreased significantly. The grafting rate of GLG-g-LA copolymer was improved more than twice times compared with lignin-lactide graft copolymer (LG-g-LA). Then LG-g-LA and GLG-g-LA copolymer were mixed with PLA to prepare different PLA composite films via casting method, respectively. Particularly, the elongation at break of PLA/GLG-g-LA2 composite film increased to 41.98%, which was more than 20 times higher than PLA. In general, PLA/GLG-g-LA composite film with toughness, excellent UV barrier, water resistance and controllable gas permeation could be used as high-performance and biodegradable materials in packaging field.

Noncatalytic hydropyrolysis of lignin in a high pressure micro-pyrolyzer

Huiyuan Wang,Tan Li,Jing Su,Kai Miao,Kaige Wang

Lignin hydropyrolysis was investigated in a high-pressure micro-reactor with on-line analysis characterization of products. The influences of atmosphere, pressure, and temperature on product formation during lignin pyrolysis were quantitatively discussed. The presence of hydrogen, elevated pressure and temperature favored the production of condensable vapors and permanent gas while inhibited the formation of char. High-pressure hydrogen boosted the conversion of methoxy phenolics to non-methoxy phenolics, and facilitated the generation of hydrocarbon condensable vapors and hydrocarbon gases. Non-methoxy phenolics were major condensable vapor from lignin hydropyrolysis. Yield of non-methoxy phenolics reached 19.68C% at 3 MPa and 500 °C. The monocyclic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons as well as condensable aliphatic hydrocarbons were observed from lignin hydropyrolysis. Methane was the most abundant gas product from lignin hydropyrolysis, yield of which was 10.27C% at 2 MPa and 600 °C. The formation mechanisms of typical products were proposed and verified with experiments using model compounds. The formation of non-methoxy phenolics, monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and aliphatic hydrocarbons is related to the substitution of methoxy (and its methyls) and phenolic hydroxyl groups on benzene rings by alkyls, alkenyls and hydrogen radicals, as well as the hydrogenation of π bonds .
