Recycled lignin-rich DES yielded conductive gels via one-pot synthesis. • Lignin-metal synergy facilitated polymerization for gel formation. • The gel exhibited high strength (1.2 MPa) and anti-freezing ability. • Flexible sensors showed rapid response and stable signal detection. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are widely applied in lignocellulosic biomass pretreatment for their green, reusable, and lignin-selective merits. However, lignin accumulation during DES cycling significantly increases solvent viscosity and reduces pretreatment efficiency, severely limiting its sustainable application. To address this bottleneck, we innovatively combined recycled lactic acid/zinc chloride (LA/ZnCl 2 ) DES with acrylic acid (AA), leveraging the synergistic effect of lignin and metal ions to drive free radical polymerization. This strategy enables a simple and efficient preparation for lignin eutectic gels with excellent mechanical properties and low-temperature resistance. The optimized gels (with 3 wt% lignin) exhibited high tensile stress (1.2 MPa), elongation at break (580%), multi-surface adhesion (32 kPa), and maintained a stable electrical conductivity of 1.1 mS cm −1 even at −18 °C. At room temperature, the assembled flexible sensors possessed a fast response speed (160 ms), linear deformation response, and robust electrical stability (<5% signal decay over 700 cycles of 100% deformation). This study pioneered the coupling of DES pretreatment and eutectic gel preparation, facilitating full utilization of lignocellulose and DES components to advance DES-based lignocellulose fractionation, valorization, and the entire biorefinery industry. Gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) based on polymer matrix of lignocellulose and gelatinized potato starch is prepared, and elemental sulfur is introduced as an additive for the first time. The polymer matrix has shown excellent performances including liquid electrolyte uptake, tensile strength and thermal stability. The ionic conductivity and electrochemical stability window of the corresponding GPE are improved with the introduction of the elemental sulfur. Furthermore, the addition of elemental sulfur can be reduced into short-chain Li 2 S and Li 2 S 2 on the surface of lithium anode to further elevate the capacity of battery. Meanwhile, the short-chain Li 2 S and Li 2 S 2 in the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film on the surface of lithium metal can improve SEI’s mechanical properties and the interface compatibility between GPE and lithium metal. The multi-component synergistic effect of GPE provides the battery with superior cycle stability and excellent electrochemical performances. Bio-based GPE will exhibit a promising and alternative way for the practical application of lithium–sulfur batteries.

Natural biomass is a promising candidate for manufacturing an efficient anode in the microbial electrochemical system (MES) for its abundance and low cost. However, the structure and performance of the electrode highly depend on the biomass species. A simple and sustainable method for creating a self-supporting electrode is proposed by freeze-drying and carbonizing a blend of cellulose, lignin, and hemicellulose. This strategy leads to a cork-like structure and improved mechanical strength of the lignocellulose carbon. A power density of 4780 ± 260 mW m −2 (CLX-800) was achieved, which was the highest record for unmodified lignocellulose-based anodes in the microbial fuel cells. The morphological as lamellar multilayer and rich in hydrophilic functional groups could facilitate the formation of thick electroactive biofilms and enrich Geobacter with the highest abundance of 92.3%. The CLX material is expected to be the ideal electrode for high performance and functionally controllability.

In thermal conversion utilization, nitrogen-rich biomass such as waste wood-based panels will release a large amount of NOxinto the atmosphere, causing serious harm to the surroundings. By means of co-pyrolysis, N in waste wood-based panels can be fixed in chars instead of discharging into the atmosphere in the form of volatile matter, which can reduce NOxemission and lay a foundation for the preparation of nitrogen-rich carbon materials with high added value. As the most commonly used adhesive in the production of wood-based panels, urea-formaldehyde resin adhesive (UF) is the main nitrogen source in waste wood-based panels. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to explore the effects of glucose, ethyl maltol and 2,5-dimethyl-4-hydroxy-3(2H)-furanone (DMHF) on nitrogen migration and conversion during UF pyrolysis by adjusting the different proportions of model compounds and UF. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that ethyl maltol and DMHF had lower thermal stability and the pyrolysis process was concentrated in the range of 90–168 °C, which does not coincide with the mass loss temperature of UF. UF can promote the pyrolysis of these three model compounds at the initial stage to some extent. The elemental analysis showed that the N retention in co-pyrolysis chars increased in varying degrees with the increase of the addition of model compounds; the nitrogen retention in chars of glucose-UF, ethyl maltol-UF and DMHF-UF increased by 28.47%, 3.48% and 16.45% with the increase of the model compound content from 50% to 90%, respectively. The XPS results showed that the relative content of N-6 in chars increased with the increase of ethyl maltol content, and the relative content of N-5 in chars increased with the increased addition of DMHF. Glucose had little effect on the distribution of N-functional groups in chars. Keywords:wood;thermal conversion;model compounds;urea-formaldehyde resin adhesive;char;nitrogen migration and transformation

Cellulose nanofibers (CNF) are promising in composite functional materials, while the pulping and bleaching processes are usually needed in their production, leading to high cost and pollution. Here, a two-step liquid how water (LHW)/deep eutectic solvents (DES) pretreatment and wet mechanical grinding exfoliation strategy is employed to prepare CNF from three raw representative bulk lignocellulose materials (wheat straw, moso bamboo and poplar wood) without pulping and bleaching processes. CNF prepared from this universal approach exhibits desirable nanofibrous structure and good mechanical properties, which could serve as reinforcing and binding agents for the assembly of transition metal carbides (MXene) nanosheets to overcome their poor mechanical properties and structure stability. The obtained CNF/MXene composite film with closely stacked “mussel-like” structure exhibits enhanced mechanical properties, and demonstrates potential applications in electromagnetic interference shielding and electro-/photo-thermal heating. Furthermore, flexible and conductive CNF/MXene composite film could serve as dry electrodes to detect and monitor epidermal electrophysiological signals (electrocardiogram, electromyogram, etc.). This work provides a scalable and universal approach for the fabrication of high-performance CNF-based multifunctional materials, which is promising for the development of flexible and portable electronics.

Adsorption is considered to be a promising butanol recovery method for solving the issue of inhibition in the ABE (acetone-butanol-ethanol) fermentation. As a byproduct in the second generation biobutanol industry, lignin was found to be a good adsorbent for the butanol enrichment. It is conducive to the full utilization of renewable lignocellulose biomass resource. Kinetic and equilibrium experiments indicated that lignin had a satisfactory adsorption rate and capacity that are comparable to those of many synthetic materials. Multicomponent adsorption experiments revealed that lignin had higher adsorption selectivity toward butanol than that of ethanol and acetone. The adsorption capacity of lignin for butanol first increased and then gradually decreased with increasing temperature. And maximum adsorption capacity reached 304.66 mg g −1 at 313 K. The inflection point of temperature is close to the ABE fermentation temperature of 310 K. The condensed butanol by desorption was 145 g L −1 , with a satisfying regeneration performance. 1 H NMR and FT-IR spectra indicated that the aromatic units of lignin formed π -systems with A/B/E. The π -system is particularly significant for butanol due to its longer hydrocarbon chain. These results could contribute to the emerging lignin-based materials for butanol separation.

Eco-friendly lignin depolymerization into monomeric phenols in an aqueous system is essential for the sustainable and green valorization of lignocellulosic biomass. However, a major challenge in this process is the development of efficient and stable catalysts for aqueous reductive catalytic fractionation (RCF), as water can cause catalyst deactivation and reduce monomer yields. In this study, a water-resistant RuNiZnO x /Nb 2 O 5 catalyst is developed that demonstrates excellent catalytic activity and stability in aqueous systems, achieving a near-theoretical monomeric phenol yield of 40.1 wt% under reaction conditions of 240℃ and 3 MPa H 2 for 4 h. The excellent performance of this catalyst is attributed to the synergistic hydrogen spillover effect between Ni and Ru and the strong acidic properties of ZnO, as revealed by in-situ XPS analysis and NH 3 -TPD, respectively. This hydrogen spillover effect significantly alters the product composition, promoting the generation of POH-S/G from lignin model compounds. Additionally, screening of the catalyst support materials revealed that Nb 2 O 5 not only enhances Ru dispersion but also improves its stability, resulting in a minor decrease in lignin monomer yield observed after three cycles.

Lignocellulose constitutes the primary component of dietary fiber. We assessed how fermenting bamboo shoot residue with the medicinal white-rot fungus Inonotus obliquus affected the yield, composition, and functional attributes of dietary fiber by altering bamboo shoot residue lignocellulose's spatial structure and composition. I. obliquus secretes lignocellulolytic enzymes, which effectively enhance the degradation of holocellulose and lignin by 87.8% and 25.5%, respectively. Fermentation led to a more porous structure and reduced crystallinity. The yield of soluble dietary fiber increased from 5.1 g/100 g raw BSR to 7.1 g/100 g 9-day-fermented bamboo shoot residue. The total soluble sugar content of dietary fiber significantly increased from 9.2% to 13.8%, which improved the hydration, oil holding capacity, in vitro cholesterol, sodium cholate, and nitrite adsorption properties of dietary fiber from bamboo shoot residue. These findings confirm that I. obliquus biotransformation is promising for enhancing dietary fiber yield and quality.

Concerns about food safety and environmental impact from chemical surfactants have prompted interest in natural lignocellulosic materials as alternatives. In this study, we combined hydrated deep eutectic solvent (DES) pretreatment with ultrasound treatment to prepare lignocellulosic nanofibrils (LCNF) from bamboo shoot shells with appropriate surface properties for stabilizing Pickering emulsions. The pretreatment intensity effectively modulated the surface characteristics of LCNF, achieving desirable wettability through lignin retention and in-situ esterification. The resulting LCNF/curcumin Pickering emulsion (CPE) demonstrated curcumin protection and pH-responsive color changes, while the ensuing CPE/PVA composite film exhibited ultraviolet shielding, mechanical strength, oxygen barrier, and antioxidant properties. Furthermore, the CPE/PVA film showed promise as a real-time indicator for monitoring shrimp freshness, maintaining sensitivity to spoilage even after six months of storage. These findings advance the advancement of green LCNF technologies, providing eco-friendly solutions for valorizing bamboo shoot shells and enhancing the application of LCNF in Pickering emulsions.

The hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignocellulose-based furan compounds holds significant potential for the synthesis of aviation fuel. However, challenges such as high catalyst costs and low yields persist. This study proposes a two-step strategy, involving pre-hydrogenation followed by HDO, to convert the C 15 condensation product derived from furfural and levulinic acid into hydrocarbons within the aviation fuel range. A Ni-based catalyst supported on zirconium phosphate (ZrP) with the incorporation of Nb 2 O 5 was synthesized. At 340 °C, 4 MPa H 2 , and weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) = 14.9, using Ni-Nb 2 O 5 /ZrP as the catalyst for HDO, considering the pre-hydrogenation, the overall yield of alkanes in the C 10 –C 15 jet fuel range from solid condensation products FLF is 62.4%, with a yield of C 15 alkanes of 16.2% and C 14 alkanes of 25.2%. A series of characterizations and comparative experiments were carried out. Experimental studies have demonstrated that doping with Nb 2 O 5 plays a crucial role in enhancing the HDO performance. The characterization results indicate that the introduction of an appropriate amount of Nb 2 O 5 increased the electron density of ZrP, enriched the catalyst's acidic sites, in addition, the ratio of Bronsted acid to Lewis acid sites in the catalyst increases. Finally, a brief analysis of industrialization potential was conducted.

Fungal cellulases usually contain a family 1 carbohydrate-binding module (CBM1), and its role was considered to recognize the substrate specifically. This study testified that the CBM1s derived from cellobiohydrolase I of Trichoderma reesei, Penicillium oxalicum , and Penicillium funiculosum could be used as an effective accessory protein in cellulase cocktails to enhance the saccharification of lignocellulose, and its enhancement effect was significantly superior to some reported accessory proteins, such as bovine serum albumin (BSA). The promoting effects of the CBM1s were related to not only the CBM1 sources and protein dosages, but also the substrate characteristics and solid consistency during enzymatic hydrolysis. The adsorption capacity of the CBM1s, the adsorption kinetic of TrCBM from T. reesei and cellobiohydrolase, endoglucanase, and β-glucosidase from P. oxalicum , and the effect of adding TrCBM on enzyme activities of free cellulases in the hydrolysis system were investigated, and the binding conformations and affinities of CBM1s to cellulose and lignin were predicted by molecular docking. It was speculated that the higher affinity of the CBM1s to lignin than cellulases could potentially enable the CBM1s to displace cellulase adsorbed on lignin or to preferentially adsorb onto lignin to avoid ineffective adsorption of cellulase onto lignin, which enhanced cellulase system efficiency during enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulose.

Photoreforming of lignocellulose for sustainable H 2 generation appears to be a good option at the time that biomass wastes are being degraded. Recently, polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) has emerged as a promising alternative for the photorefoming reaction, however, its photocatalytic performance is largely limited by its severe recombination of charge carriers. Here, we developed an approach, for the first time, to construct a curly-like carbon nitride nanosheets with the formation of in-plane surface dyadic heterostructure for steering the charge transfer and optimizing the electronic band structure . This PCN material shows superior photoreforming H 2 evolved activity of 122.77 μmolh −1 (i.e. 4092 μmolh −1 g −1 ) from the aqueous lignocellulose solution (using Pt as cocatalyst), 15.6 folds of pristine PCN under visible light irradiation, together with an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 7.87% (λ = 420 nm). It enables the visible-light-driven conversion of several kinds of lignocellulose including the monosaccharides, disaccharides, hemicellulose , and cellulose . Additionally, when used as a photocatalyst for water splitting, it achieves a remarkable H 2 production rate of 22043 μmolh −1 g −1 (∼56.0 folds’ increases than pristine PCN) with a superior high AQE of 41.2%, as well as a high CO reduction rate of 56.3 μmolh −1 from the photocatalytic CO 2 conversion, 24.5 times than pristine PCN.
