The synthesis and assembly of monodispersed colloidal spheres are currently the subject of extensive investigation to fabricate artificial structural color materials. However, artificial structural colors from general colloidal crystals still suffer from the low color visibility and strong viewing angle dependence which seriously hinder their practical application in paints, colorimetric sensors, and color displays. Herein, monodispersed polysulfide (PSF) spheres with intrinsic high refractive index (as high as 1.858) and light-absorbing characteristics are designed, synthesized through a facile polycondensation and crosslinking process between sodium disulfide and 1,2,3-trichloropropane. Owing to their high monodispersity, sufficient surface charge, and good dispersion stability, the PSF spheres can be assembled into large-scale and high-quality 3D photonic crystals. More importantly, high structural color visibility and broad viewing angle are easily achieved because the unique features of PSF can remarkably enhance the relative reflectivity and eliminate the disturbance of scattering and background light. The results of this study provide a simple and efficient strategy to create structural colors with high color visibility, which is very important for their practical application.

In this study, we demonstrate the synthesis of dynamic polysulfide networks through the solution polycondensation of pentaerythritol tetra(3-mercaptopropionate) (PTMP) with elemental sulfur by a reverse vulcanization process. Elemental sulfur content as high as 51% can be incorporated into the dynamic polysulfide networks. An important feature of the resulted polysulfide networks is their catalytic-free malleability, which implies that they have both thermo- and photo-induced solid-state plasticities to obtain a complex permanent shape due to the exchange of dynamic S S bonds. These dynamic polysulfide networks have great potentials in fabricating complex three-dimensional shape memory devices for biological and mechanical applications.

Sulfur-rich copolymers have gained a great deal of attention as promising cathode materials in Li-S batteries due to their low cost and naturally uniform sulfur dispersion. However, the poor electrical conductivity and shuttle effect cause rapid capacity decay and low sulfur utilization especially under high sulfur loading and low electrolyte/sulfur ratio. Herein, the Fe1-xS/C dispersed and Se-containing sulfur-rich polymer (FSP) was synthesized by one-pot reaction of ferrocene, trithioiynuric acid with SexSy. In such process, the trithioiynuric acid reacts with SexSy to form Se-containing sulfur-rich copolymers. Simultaneously, ferrocene reacts with sulfur to form highly dispersed Fe1-xS/C within sulfur-rich copolymers. The covalent chemical binding of sulfur in the FSP effectively suppress the shuttle effect of polysulfides by chemical binding. Meanwhile, the Se improves the conductivity of FSP, which enhances the reaction kinetics. Moreover, the highly dispersed Fe1-xS/C in the FSP is able to effectively catalyze polysulfide conversion and inhibit the shuttle effect. As a result, the optimized FSP electrode exhibits a high capacity of 1330 mAh g-1 at 0.2 C. Even under high sulfur loading (4.08 mg cm-2) and low E/S ratio (6 μL mg-1), the FSP cathode demonstrates a remarkable capacity of 734.7 mAh g-1 at 0.2 C.

The severe polysulfides shuttling and irregular lithium dendrites impede the widespread adoption of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Here, a sulfiphilic/lithiophilic NiCoP nanofiber arrayed on carbon cloth (NiCoP@CC) as the sulfur/lithium host is reported, providing a dual solution for both cathode and anode issues. Both theoretical calculations and experiments confirm that NiCoP@CC enhances the cycling stability of sulfur cathode and lithium anode by facilitating polysulfides conversion and homogenizing lithium deposition. Additionally, the unique structure of NiCoP nanofiber-decorated carbon cloth provides ample space to accommodate active materials and ensures even distribution of sulfur and lithium. Consequently, Li-S half cells containing NiCoP@CC exhibit an outstanding cycling life of 900 cycles at 1 C. Moreover, the Li@NiCoP@CC electrode achieves a stable, long cycling performance for 3000 h at 1 mA cm −2 . Notably, Li-S full cells show enhanced cycling performance, maintaining stability over 750 cycles with a decay rate of 0.04 % per cycle at 1 C and a low N/P (negative/positive capacity) ratio of 2.4. A high areal capacity of 7.75mAh cm −2 is obtained at a high sulfur loading of 8.6 mg cm −2 . This study presents a new strategy for designing bimetallic phosphides as bifunctional materials to overcome difficulties in practical Li-S batteries.

Lithium–sulfur batteries are promising for high-capacity energy storage, but their performance is limited by the shuttle effect and unfavorable volume changes during the charging and discharging cycles. To address these issues, we synthesized NiCo2S4 hollow dodecahedra@nitrogen-doped carbon core/shell nanostructures (NiCo2S4@NC) using the ZIF-67 template and polydopamine carbonization. The high chemical conversion rate and large specific surface area of NiCo2S4 hollow dodecahedra promote fast and stable polysulfide conversion, while the N-doped carbon shell mitigates structural collapse and volume changes caused by reversible reactions of lithium sulfides. Coupling the superior polysulfide conversion of NiCo2S4 with the excellent polysulfide adsorption of the N-doped carbon shell, NiCo2S4@NC/S (72% sulfur loading) delivers an initial specific capacity of 1170 mA h g–1 at 0.2 C, a capacity retention of 61% after 300 cycles, and a reversible specific capacity of 420 mA h g–1 after 500 cycles at a high current density of 1 C. Our results suggest that NiCo2S4@NC can serve as a promising cathode material for lithium–sulfur batteries with improved performance and stability.

Lithium‑sulfur (Li S) batteries, despite their ultrahigh theoretical energy density and cost-effectiveness, face persistent challenges such as sluggish redox kinetics, severe polysulfide shuttling, and insufficient sulfur utilization. Herein, we propose a novel integrated Ni/V 2 O 3 heterostructure anchored on self-supporting carbon cloth (Ni/V 2 O 3 @CC) as a high-efficiency sulfur host to address these limitations. The three-dimensional conductive carbon cloth framework eliminates the need for binders while ensuring robust structural integrity and efficient electron transport. The rationally designed Ni/V 2 O 3 heterostructure synergistically combines metallic Ni, which offers catalytic active sites for accelerated sulfur conversion, with polar V 2 O 3 , enabling strong chemisorption of polysulfides. Experimental and theoretical analyses reveal that the abundant interfacial polar-catalytic centers in the heterostructure significantly suppress polysulfide shuttling and enhance redox kinetics. Consequently, the self-supporting Ni/V 2 O 3 @CC cathode demonstrates excellent cycling stability at 1.0C, delivering a high initial discharge capacity of 650 mAh g −1 even at 5.0C with 84% capacity retention after 100 cycles. Notably, it maintains a remarkable discharge capacity of 580 mAh g −1 even under a high mass loading of 4 mg cm −2 . This work establishes a new paradigm for integrating multifunctional heterostructures with freestanding substrates, paving the way toward practical high-energy-density Li S batteries with extended cycle life.

Lithium‑sulfur batteries (LSBs) have attracted significant attention as promising energy storage and power sources due to their exceptionally high energy density (2600 Wh kg −1 ) and the low cost of active sulfur materials. However, their practical deployment is hindered by the severe polysulfide shuttle effect and the poor thermal stability of commercial polypropylene (PP) separators, which tend to shrink at elevated temperatures and cause internal short circuits. In this study, a flame-retardant and lithium polysulfides (LiPSs)-anchoring material (SiO 2 @PD) is synthesized and coated onto PP separators (SiO 2 @PD/PP) via a simple slurry-coating method. The synergistic LiPSs adsorption arises from strong interactions between the phosphorus‑oxygen double bonds (P=O) and hydroxyl groups (-OH) of PD and the Si–O–Si bonds of SiO 2 , effectively suppressing the LiPSs shuttle effect and facilitating Li + transport. Moreover, the release of phosphorus species from PD at elevated temperatures, together with the thermal barrier provided by SiO 2 , significantly enhances flame retardancy and ensures structural integrity under high-temperature operation. Benefiting from these combined effects, LSBs employing SiO 2 @PD/PP separators deliver exceptionally low capacity decay rate of 0.027% per cycle over 1000 cycles at 2.5C, and exhibit excellent thermal resilience, retaining 730.32 mA h g −1 after 100 cycles at 60 °C. This work provides a practical and scalable strategy for designing multifunctional separators toward high-performance and intrinsically safe LSBs.

Toughening modification of epoxy resin (EP) matrices is important for advancing high-performance fiber-reinforced composites. A promising strategy involves the use of multi-component additive systems. However, synergistic effects in such additive systems are difficult to achieve for multidimensional performance optimization due to insufficient interfacial interactions and competing toughening mechanisms. Herein, a “hard–soft” biphasic synergistic toughening system was engineered for epoxy resin, composed of furan-ring-grafted polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (FPOSS) and liquid polysulfide rubber. The hybrid toughening agent significantly enhanced the integrated performance of the epoxy system: Young’s modulus, tensile strength, and elongation at break increased by 13%, 56%, and 101%, respectively. These improvements are attributed to the formation of enriched molecular chain entanglement sites and optimized dispersion, facilitated by nucleophilic addition reactions between flexible rubber segments and rigid FPOSS units with the epoxy matrix. The marked enhancement in toughness primarily stems from the synergistic toughening mechanism involving “crazing pinning” and “crazing-shear band”. Concurrently, FPOSS incorporation effectively modulated the curing reaction kinetics, rendering the process more gradual while substantially elevating the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the cured system by 16.82 °C and endowing it with superior thermal degradation stability. This work provides a simple and unique strategy to leverage multi-scale mechanisms for the construction of epoxy-based composites with good toughness and strength, and enhanced heat resistance.

Simultaneously achieving a high conductivity and a good volume-change accommodation for sulfur cathode in lithium‑sulfur batteries is highly required. Herein, we present a unique porous sulfur composite consisting of a porous sulfur particle coating with conductive hydrogel polypyrrole , which is prepared through a templated method. The pores inside the sulfur particles offer a good buffering space for the volume expansion of sulfur upon lithiation; while the external polypyrrole coating improves the conductivity and suppress the transfer of polysulfides . The porous sulfur@polypyrrole composite exhibits a capacity of about 900 mAh g −1 after cycling for 100 times at 0.12 C, along with a good Coulombic efficiency around 99.9%, which is much better than the polypyrrole-coated non-porous sulfur particles and pure sulfur particles. When cycled for 500 times, the capacity fading rate is as low as 0.09% per cycle. After three rounds of rate-performance measurements, the capacity retention of the sulfur@polypyrrole at different rates remain above 97%. The density functional theory calculations and electrochemical impedance spectra demonstrate a polysulfide-adsorptive and a stable electric transportation surface of the sulfur@polypyrrole composite, respectively.

An alternative strategy for blocking the shuttling of soluble polysulfides in lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries involved introducing an interlayer between the cathode and separator. However, tailoring the interlayer components, structure, and chemistry to realize efficient conversion of polysulfides into insoluble lithium sulfides remains challenging. Herein, a flexible self-standing hybrid interlayer is engineered by intertwining one-dimensional (1D) V2O5 nanowires (NWs) with graphene nanoscrolls (GNS) into a robust interconnected 3D network to be used as both an upper current collector and physical/chemical polysulfide-trapper. The highly conductive and open GNS framework provides bicontinuous transfer channels for rapid electron and ion transport across the cathode/separator interface. Meanwhile, the V2O5 NWs act as ideal redox mediators to dynamically block polysulfide dissolution and facilitate their conversion into sulfides via formation of active intermediate polythionate complexes. Therefore, these cells with 70 wt% sulfur content in the whole cathode have significantly improved performance with a long cycling life (1000 cycles), low capacity decay (0.041% per cycle), and considerable areal capacity (>4 mA h cm−2), even at a high sulfur loading of 5.5 mg cm−2. This novel interlayer design strategy has great potential for promoting the practical use of Li–S batteries.

Polyethylene oxide (PEO) solid electrolytes , acknowledged for their safety advantages over liquid counterparts, confront inherent challenges, including low ionic conductivity , restricted lithium ion migration, and mechanical fragility, notably pronounced in lithium‑sulfur batteries due to the polysulfide shuttling phenomenon. To address these limitations, we integrate a quaternary ammonium cation-modified cellulose (QACC) nanofiber , electrospun with cellulose acetate (CA) from recycled cigarette filters, into the PEO electrolyte matrix. The nitrogen atom within the quaternary ammonium group exhibits a pronounced affinity for polysulfide compounds, effectively curtailing polysulfide migration. Concurrently, Lewis acid-base interactions between quaternary ammonium groups and lithium salt anions facilitate the release of additional Li + , achieving a lithium-ion transference number 1.5 times higher than its pure PEO counterpart. Furthermore, the introduction of a larger trifluoromethanesulfonimide (TFSI) group on the QACC macromolecule (TFSI-QACC) disrupts the ordered arrangement of PEO macromolecules, resulting in a noteworthy enhancement in ionic conductivity, reaching 2.07 × 10 −4 S cm −1 at 60 °C, thus addressing the challenge of low PEO electrolyte conductivity. Moreover, the nanofiber enhances the mechanical strength of the PEO electrolyte from 0.49 to 7.50 MPa, mitigating safety concerns related to lithium dendrites puncturing the electrolyte. Consequently, the composite PEO demonstrates exemplary performance in lithium symmetrical batteries, enduring 500 h of continuous operation and completing 100 cycles at both room and elevated temperatures. This integrated approach, transitioning from waste to wealth, adeptly addresses a spectrum of challenges in the efficiency of solid-state electrolytes, holding considerable promise for advancing lithium‑sulfur battery technology.

Lithium–sulfur battery is amongst the most promising next-generation energy storage technology owing to their high theoretical capacity and energy density . Nevertheless, the notorious shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) seriously impedes its practical applications. Here, we report an all-CVD approach to realize the direct growth of ReS 2 @N-doped graphene (NG) heterostructure , which serves as an ultralight high-performance interlayer for elevated LiPS regulation via easy transfer onto the commercial separator. In contrast to the traditional interlayers constructed via vacuum filtration of nanostructured materials that inevitably increase the thickness and weight of the separator, our all-CVD-enabled ReS 2 @NG film possesses an area of 15 mm × 100 mm, a thickness of ~0.5 μm and a negligible areal weight of 80–90 μg cm −2 . Benefiting from the two-dimensional (2D) vertically-erected nanostructure , adsorptive ReS 2 -conductive NG interface, and favorable electrical conductivity , thus-derived ReS 2 @NG interlayer readily enhances reaction kinetics for LiPS conversion and boosts the reutilization of trapped LiPS whilst guaranteeing smooth transportation of lithium ions . Accordingly, an initial discharge capacity of 854 mAh g −1 with an average capacity decay of 0.064% per cycle after 800 cycles can be harvested at 2.0 C. Even at a high sulfur loading of 6.4 mg cm −2 , an initial areal capacity of 6.1 mAh cm −2 can be gained, which still retains 5.8 mAh cm −2 after 40 cycles at 0.1 C. This work is anticipated to shed light upon the construction of CVD-enabled versatile 2D heterostructures for enriching the interlayer design with multifunctionality and cost-effectiveness.
