Synthesis and characterization of nano-SiO2 hybrid poly(methyl methacrylate) nanocomposites as novel wax inhibitor of asphalt binder

Haibo Ding,Haopeng Zhang,Qinshan Xie,Ali Rahman,Yanjun Qiu

Wax crystals may continuously precipitate from the asphalt binder during the cooling process, which seriously damages the low-temperature cracking resistance of the pavement. At present, few researchers have developed wax inhibitors (WIs) to hinder wax crystallization of the asphalt binders. In this paper, a novel wax Inhibitor was synthesized by the hybridization of organically modified Nano-SiO 2 to the poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), and the modification effect was validated by the ninhydrin chromogenic method and thermogravimetric analysis . The optimum content and composition of the organic nano-SiO 2 hybrid PMMA WIs were also determined by the rheological tests, including viscosity measurement , wax precipitation temperature (WPT), and yield stress tests. Moreover, the wax inhibition mechanism was predicted by the combination of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM) tests. According to the obtained results, the successful modification of nano-SiO 2 and PMMA were represented by the blue-violet precipitation and improved high temperature stability of PMMA, respectively. The optimal content and composition of nano-SiO 2 hybrid PMMA was determined as 200 ppm and mass ratio of 1:4 (nano-SiO 2 to PMMA), respectively. Compared with the co-crystallization between PMMA and wax crystals, the introduction of nano-SiO 2 provided an additional and more stable heterogeneous nucleation template, which further reduced the size, and increased the dispersion of the wax crystals. Consequently, it is promising to develop the nanocomposites as WIs in the asphalt binder.

Mask Waste: A Sustainable Mask-Based Epoxy Resin/SiO2 Composite for Efficient Purification of Water-in-Oil Emulsions

Jingfang Zhu,Longyang Li,Longxiang Han,Meng Dong,Zhixiang Zeng,Litao Sun

Since the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a tremendous increase in the production of masks worldwide, with more than 1.5 billion masks having been disposed of during this time. The damage caused by mask pollution is a global threat; highlighting the need to dispose of discarded masks correctly. Herein, we report a recycling approach that uses discarded masks to fabricate a superhydrophobic epoxy resin/SiO2 membrane for separating emulsions. The composite has a high flux value (2123 L·m–2·h–1) and high separation efficiency (>98%). The filter maintained its excellent superhydrophobic property (WCA > 150°) after tape-peel cycles, clamping cycles with tweezers, abrasion cycles with 800 grit SiC sandpaper, pressure with fingertips, and kneading cycles. This study proposes a renewable, eco-friendly, and low-cost product, which can be used for oil spill cleanup and water purification. The filter not only removes oil from oily wastewater (such as oil spills) but also solves pollution caused by discarded masks. This study provides insights for resource recovery that may contribute to the purification of oily water emulsions.

Micelle-mediated assembly of metals in Ag@MnOx/m-SiO2 for reinforced antimicrobial activity and photothermal water evaporation

Wenlong Tu,Haodong Li,Bo Li,Jie Cheng,Ping Xu,Wuxiang Zhang,Zengjing Guo,Jing Zhao,Fanghua Li,Yiyan Song,Fu Yang

The increasing complexity of environmental pollution posed a higher requirement for the development of environment-governed functional materials . Herein, to achieve desired synergy and multiple functionalities of eco-friendly nanomaterials , a micelle-mediated metal assembly strategy was proposed to integrate plasmonic Ag nanoparticles into MnO x modified mesoporous silica hosts by metal-modified neutral dodecyl amine surfactant , correspondingly, a multifunctional mesoporous Ag@MnOx/m-SiO 2 (AMSs) nanocomposite was obtained. The characterization results revealed that the introduction of Mn and alteration in the amount of Ag mediated the formation of a special mesostructure and nanometric morphology of the silica host. Bearing a low Ag loading (r.t. of Ag/Mn = 1/2), ultrafine Ag nanoparticles were embedded in the inner core of mesoporous silica nanospheres . While assembly with a higher Ag concentration affected the morphology of the obtained AMSs and resulted in rich Ag nanoparticles on the exterior surface of mesoporous silica. By this strategy, ultrafine Ag nanoparticles and well-dispersed amorphous MnO x species were coupled into the mesoporous silica to reach a special configuration and integrated functionality. The obtained AMSs-3 can effectively inactivate bacteria ( E. coli , S. aureus, and P. aeruginosa ) with a prolonged inhibitory effect, rapidly reduce harmful nitrophenol, as well as photothermally assist water evaporation (evaporation rate of 1.51 kg m −2 h −1 , receiver efficiency of 87%). This work provides versatile environment-governing functional nanomaterials for both highly effective antimicrobial and environmental remediation.

Dodecenylsuccinic anhydride-modified oxalate decarboxylase loaded with magnetic nano-Fe3O4@SiO2 for demulsification of oil-in-water emulsions

Ning Hou,Xin Zhao,Ziyi Han,Xinxin Jiang,Yongping Fang,Yun Chen,Dapeng Li

The inability to demulsify oil-in-water emulsions via green and efficient processes is a challenging problem in many industrial processes. As a novel biodemulsifier, protein demulsifiers display excellent dispersibility and stability, but their demulsification mechanisms are not clear, which severely restricts their large-scale production and application. In this study, the demulsification mechanism of the high-efficiency protein biodemulsifier oxalate decarboxylase (Bacm OxdC), which is secreted by the Bacillus mojavensis XH1 strain, for an oil-in-water emulsion was analyzed. The results showed that Bacm OxdC was spontaneously adsorbed at the oil-water interface and turned its hydrophobic amino acids outward to increase its hydrophobicity and break the emulsified system. Furthermore, it effectively reduced the oil-water interfacial tension and interfacial film strength, thereby reducing the oil-water interfacial energy and finally enabling demulsification. To further improve the demulsification efficiency and reusability, Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @OxdC-DDSA was prepared. This method provided a magnetic response for Bacm OxdC and enabled efficient demulsification. The demulsification rate of Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @OxdC-DDSA reached 98.1% at 24 h, which was 30.7% higher than that of the original Bacm OxdC. After three cycles, the demulsification rate still reached 89.3%, proving it has excellent recyclability . This work is the first study on the demulsification mechanism of protein biodemulsifiers and provides useful insights into the demulsification mechanism of biodemulsifiers for oil-in-water emulsions. In addition, a promising high-efficiency modification technique for protein biodemulsifiers was proposed, which provided information for the development of biodemulsifiers for oil-water separation.

Molecularly imprinted polydopamine coated CdTe@SiO2 as a ratiometric fluorescent probe for ultrafast and visual p-nitrophenol monitoring

Yeqing Xu,Ting Huang,Bo Hu,Minjia Meng,Yongsheng Yan

Molecular imprinted ratiometric fluorescent analysis method has been a popular method for the quantitative and qualitative tests of target analysis yet encounters low detection efficiency caused by the deep embedment and uneven distribution of fluorescent monomers, even the embedding rate of fluorescent monomer directly affects the visual detection effect. Herein, the ratiometric fluorescent molecularly imprinted polymers (F-PDA/CdTe QDs@SiO 2 @MIPs) based fluorescent polydopamine (F-PDA) and CdTe quantum dots (CdTe QDs) was successfully synthesized to detect p -nitrophenol ( p -NP) selectively and visually. F-PDA was firstly used in the synthesis of ratiometric fluorescent molecularly imprinted polymers to serve as both fluorescent monomer and functional monomer, which greatly shorten the detection time while reducing the fluorescence loss caused by polymer coating. The test results showed that the p -NP quenched the fluorescent of F-PDA via electron transfer. Meanwhile, F-PDA/CdTe QDs@SiO 2 @MIPs enabled to visually detect a low detection limit of p -NP (56.68 nM) within 2.0 min by naked eyes. The detection time was as fast as quantum dots detect targets directly and the detection limit was well below the standard concentration of p -NP in drinking water. Finally, the F-PDA/CdTe QDs@SiO 2 @MIPs realize the detection of p -NP in the drinking and wastewater respectively.

Fabrication of sea urchin-like Au@SiO2 nanoparticles SERS substrate for the determination of malachite green in tilapia

Yuqian Liu,Lei Lei,Yeyu Wu,Yuyun Chen,Jun Yan,Weiwei Zhu,Xuecai Tan,Qi Wang

The quantitative determination of malachite green (MG) is of great importance in aquatic product safety. Although it has been testifying that sea urchin-like gold nanoparticles (SGNPs) have good enhancement effect, the practical application remains challenging for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) due to poor stability. Here, sea urchin-like Au@SiO 2 nanoparticles (SG@SiO 2 NPs) is designed and synthesized through a controllable and surfactant-free hydrothermal method to improve its stability. The morphology of SG@SiO 2 NPs and the SiO 2 shell thickness were adjusted to obtain good SERS performance. The SERS signal intensity was linear for MG, crystal violet (CV) and methylene blue (MB) at 1619 cm −1 , 1623 cm −1 and 1627 cm −1 over the concentration range of 10 −5 -10 −9 M, 10 −5 -10 −9 M and 10 −5 -10 −8 M, respectively. The substrate was easily used for MG detection with limit of detection (LOD) as low as 1.5 × 10 −9 M. The recovery of MG added to several tilapia fillets samples at different concentrations ranged from 90 % to 110 %. Results indicated that SERS substrate can be used for the determination of trace amounts of MG in tilapia and demonstrated the potential of SG@SiO 2 NPs SERS substrate in food analysis fields.

A visualized ratiometric fluorescence sensing system for copper ions based on gold nanoclusters/perovskite quantum dot@SiO2 nanocomposites

Wanying Xue,Jiangyan Zhong,Haishan Wu,Jianhua Zhang,Yuwu Chi

Excessive copper ions (Cu2+) cause serious environmental pollution and even endanger the health of organisms. Fluorescence chemosensing materials are widely used in the detection of metal ions due to their simple operation and high sensitivity. In this study, SiO2-encapsulated single perovskite quantum dot (PQD@SiO2) core–shell nanostructures which show strong, stable, and green fluorescence are synthesized and composited with gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) which show Cu2+-sensitive and red light-emitting fluorescence to obtain a visualized ratiometric fluorescence sensor (AuNCs/PQD@SiO2) for the detection of Cu2+. In the visualized detection of Cu2+, the green fluorescence emitted from the ion-insensitive PQD@SiO2 component is used as a reference signal and the red fluorescence emitted by ion-sensitive AuNC component is adopted as a sensing signal. In the presence of Cu2+, the red fluorescence is quenched whereas the green fluorescence remains stable, which results in a visualized fluorescence color change from orange-red to yellow and finally to green with increasing Cu2+ concentration. The significant change in the fluorescence color of AuNCs/PQD@SiO2 in response to Cu2+ enables a rapid, sensitive, and visualized detection of Cu2+. Further accurate and sensitive ratiometric fluorescence analysis of Cu2+ can be accomplished by measuring the ratio of fluorescence intensities at 643 and 520 nm (I643/I520) at a certain Cu2+ level. The developed AuNCs/PQD@SiO2-based sensor has been validated by its satisfactory application in the detection of Cu2+ in human serum and environmental water samples.

Revealing the Hemispherical Shielding Effect of SiO2@Ag Composite Nanospheres to Improve the Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering Performance

Fengyan Wang,Daxue Du,Shan Liu,Linna Wang,Tifeng Jiao,Zhaopeng Xu,Haiyan Wang

Many studies widely used SiO2@Ag composite nanospheres for surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), which mainly contributes to electromagnetic enhancement. In addition to experiments, previous simulations mostly adopted a two-dimensional model in SERS research, resulting in the three-dimensional information being folded and masked. In this paper, we adopted the three-dimensional model to simulate the electric field distribution of SiO2@Ag composite nanospheres. It is found that when the Ag nanoparticles are distributed densely on the surface of SiO2nanospheres, light cannot pass through the upper hemisphere due to the local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of the Ag nanoparticles, resulting in the upper hemisphere shielding effect; and if there are no Ag nanoparticles distributed densely on the surface of SiO2nanospheres, the strong LSPR cannot be formed, so the incident light will be guided downward through the whispering gallery mode of the spherical structure. At the same time, we designed relevant experiments to synthesize SiO2@Ag composite nanosphere as SERS substrate and used Rhodamine 6G as a probe molecule to study its SERS performance. This design achieved a significant SERS effect, and is very consistent with our simulation results.Keywords:SERS;LSPR;three-dimensional models;upper hemisphere shielding

Improvement in the output performance of polyethylene oxide-based triboelectric nanogenerators by introducing core–shell Ag@SiO2 particles

Xu Liu,Xiao-Rong Sun,Chen Luo,Hong-Zhi Ma,Hua Yu,Yan Shao,Ming-Bo Yang,Bo Yin

The development of self-powered technology in nano-energy puts forward higher requirements for triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), in which it is necessary to further improve their output performance to broaden their scope of application, and environmentally friendly and sustainable development needs to be realized as well by the recycling of friction materials. The preparation of environmentally friendly and sustainable TENGs is reported in this work through a feasible and cost-effective solution casting method, in which polyethylene oxide (PEO) and Ecoflex were utilized as positive/negative friction materials, respectively. With introducing micron-sized core–shell Ag@SiO2 particles into the PEO matrix, micro–nano structures were constructed to increase the effective contact area, while the enhancement of dielectric properties was also achieved in the meantime. The Ag@SiO2–PEO/Ecoflex TENG with optimum particle content of 50 wt% produced a short-circuit current of 10 μA, an open-circuit voltage of 95 V, and a transfer charges of 35 nC at a frequency of 3 Hz. The maximum output power density of Ag@SiO2–PEO-50 wt%/Ecoflex TENG up to 1.5 W m−2 was reached under different load resistances. The stability and flexibility of TENGs were verified as well, which led to a novel approach for their application in wearable-flexible electronic devices. Additionally, the sustainable utilization of TENGs was achieved as a result of the water solubility of the PEO material, with significant output performance retention. This work provides an innovative approach for the further modification of the output performance of flexible and sustainable TENGs.

Porous multicomponent chitosan/poly(ε-caprolactone)-block poly (ethylene glycol)/SiO2 aerogel@polydopamine membrane for Congo red adsorption

J. Chen,L. Liu,J. Huang,C. Sheng,L. Li

A composite adsorbent, chitosan//poly (ε-caprolactone)-block poly (ethylene glycol)/SiO 2 aerogel@polydopamine (CS/PCL-b-PEG/SA@PDA) membrane was prepared for the adsorption of organic dyes. The matrix polymer materials of this novel adsorbent were eco-friendly. SiO 2 aerogel with nanoporous network construction was fixed in the multicomponent polymer fibers through simultaneous electrospinning-electrospray technology followed by modification of polydopamine (PDA). The composite adsorbent had a maximum adsorption capacity of 598.8 mg/g for Congo red (CR) and possessed good reusability performance. This adsorbent showed excellent performance for the selective adsorption of relatively large molecule CR dyes even under high concentration of small molecule methyl orange (MO) dyes or 1 M of salt solution. The adsorption mechanism indicated that the –NH 2 and –OH groups in adsorbent could generate the stronger electrostatic attraction with the –SO 3 - groups in CR. Meanwhile, the sufficient adsorption spaces of the adsorbent were constructed by the porous network structure of SiO 2 aerogel, the accumulation of PDA particles and the porous structure of the multicomponent composite membrane . The work provided a proactive study in designing an adsorbent for the selective adsorption of organic dyes.

Overcoming Limitations in the Strong Interaction between Pt and Irreducible SiO2 Enables Efficient and Selective Hydrogenation of Anthracene

Xiao Chen,Xing-Bao Wang,Shuhua Han,Dong Wang,Chuang Li,Weixiang Guan,Wen-Ying Li,Changhai Liang

Interactions between metals and oxide supports are crucial in determining catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability. For reducible oxide supported noble metals, a strong metal–support interaction (SMSI) has been widely recognized. Herein we report the intermediate selectivity and stability over an irreducible SiO2 supported Pt catalyst in the hydrogenation of anthracene that are significantly boosted due to the SMSI-induced formation of intermetallic Pt silicide and Pt–SiO2 interface. The limitation in the strong interaction between Pt nanoparticles and irreducible SiO2 has been breached by combining the strong electrostatic adsorption method and following the high temperature reduction strategy. Due to the isolated Pt active sites by Si atoms, the activated H species produced over the Pt2Si/SiO2 catalyst with an initial catalytic activity of 2.49 μmol/(m2/g)/h as well as TOF of 0.95 s–1 preferentially transfer to the outer ring of anthracene to 87% yield of symmetric octahydroanthracene (sym-OHA) by subsequent hydrogenation. In addition, the Pt2Si/SiO2 catalyst presents an excellent stability after five cycles, which can be attributed to the fact that intermetallic Pt2Si nanoparticles are anchored firmly onto the surface of the SiO2 support. The discovery contributes to broaden the horizons on the SMSI effect in the irreducible oxide supported metal particle catalysts and provides guidance to design the metal–SiO2 interface and tune the surface chemical properties in diverse application conditions.

Construction of silver nanoparticles anchored flower-like magnetic Fe3O4@SiO2@MnO2 hybrids with antibacterial and wound healing activity

Hang Jia,Xiao Zhang,Xuejun Zeng,Rui Cai,Zhouli Wang,Yahong Yuan,Tianli Yue

With the increased risk of wound infection caused by pathogenic bacteria, silver nanoparticles have been considered as potential antibacterial nanosystem. However, the challenge of size control and agglomeration of silver nanoparticles need to be considered. Herein, the application of flower-like silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) anchored Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @MnO 2 hybrids (Ag/FSM) in the control of pathogenic bacteria and promotion of wound healing were reported. TEM results indicated the ultrafine Ag NPs were uniformly dispersed onto the surface of FSM. In vitro experimental results showed the Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of Ag/FSM against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) were 60 and 100 μ g mL −1 , respectively. Furthermore, in vivo investigation in mice demonstrated that the hybrids showed low toxicity and effectively promoted wound healing caused by the infection of E. coli . In summary, the results supported the possibility that Ag/FSM could be considered as an antibacterial agent with potential for the treatment of bacterial infections.
