Soybean lipophilic protein (LP) is a promising emulsifier for nanoemulsion delivery systems. Herein, the influence of pH on the stability, rheological properties, and encapsulation efficiency of a nanoemulsion formed by ultrasonically modified LP was determined, and its influence mechanism was explored. The delivery system exhibited a high absolute zeta potential value (18–30 mV) in neutral and alkaline environments (pH 7.0 or 9.0) and uniform particle size distribution (100–350 nm). Cryo-scanning electron microscopy showed that LPs in neutral and alkaline environments covered the oil–water interface more evenly than those in acidic environments. Moreover, the LP nanoemulsion has excellent rheological properties and exhibit high emulsification performance, vitamin E encapsulation efficiency, and oxidation stability. These improvements occurred because the nanoemulsion prepared using ultrasonicated LP had a high absolute zeta potential value (maximum 30 mV), small droplet size (minimum 190 nm), uniform protein film , high viscosity, and good viscoelasticity in different pH environments. In summary, the nanoemulsion delivery system prepared by LP ultrasonication can resist the influence of different pH environments and maximize the delivery efficiency in neutral and alkaline environments. The research results identified a suitable pH environment for LP nanoemulsions and provide a theoretical reference for their further application.

UDP-glucuronosyltransferases (UGTs) and β-glucuronidase (GUS) catalyze entirely distinct metabolism reactions. UGTs are responsible for the glucuronidation of a variety of drugs, endogenous and environmental chemicals, whereas GUS hydrolyzes glucuronides and liberates the parent substrates. Information on the overlap of ligand selectivity between UGT and GUS is essential for exploring the pharmacological or toxicological effects of the inhibitors of these two metabolic enzymes. This study is conducted to test whether UGTs and GUS share common ligands, by investigating the inhibitory effects towards E. coli GUS by a series of UGT typical substrates and inhibitors. Results showed that three typical ligands of UGTs, including two specific substrates (estradiol and trifluoperazine, E2 and TFP) and one selective inhibitor (magnolol, Mag), can inhibit the activity of GUS. Kinetic assays indicated that all the three UGT specific chemicals displayed competitive inhibition, with Ki values of 31.4 (E2), 56.9 (TFP), and 16.6 μM (Mag). Docking studies further revealed that the three chemicals can enter the active sites of GUS by forming contacts with residues Glu-413, Trp-549, Asp-163, Tyr-472, Arg-562, or bound water. Our study indicates that ligand selectivity overlaps between UGTs and GUS, and some chemicals can act as co-inhibitors of these two metabolic enzymes. The pharmacological or toxicological effects of those co-inhibitors require further investigations.

Because of its long survival time, high migration ability and high pathogenicity, the migration of the virus in the subsurface environment deserves in-depth exploration and research. In this study we investigated the migration behavior of E. coli phage (VI) with organic colloids (HA) or inorganic colloids (SiO 2 ) in the saturated or unsaturated bands and compared the differences in their migration mechanisms. The effects of different colloids on the surface characteristics of VI were analyzed according to particle size and zeta potential . Column experiments were conducted to simulate their migration in the subsurface environment. The results show that HA enhances the stability of VI-HA, promotes VI migration and plays a dominant role in its migration process under both saturated and unsaturated conditions. In contrast, SiO 2 puts VI-SiO 2 in an unstable state and is easily separated in the unsaturated state, thus promoting VI migration. Based on migration experiments, the extent of influence factors on VI migration was quantified and compared. The effect of colloids on VI migration is greater than that of moisture content, where the effect of HA is greater than that of SiO 2 . This study provides an experimental research idea to determine the dominant factors affecting virus migration, and provides a general direction and theoretical basis for the biological risk assessment of pathogenic microorganisms in complex underground environments , in order to enable the decision makers to make a response in time, accurately, and efficiently.

Food safety is a major public health concern all over the world. Therefore, the prevention of food contamination is becoming extremely crucial. In this study, an antimicrobial nanoemulsion composed of water-soluble nisin and fat-soluble octanoic acid was successfully prepared. The results showed that the average particle size and the polymer dispersity index of the nisin−octanoic acid (NOA) nanoemulsion were around 52.21 nm and 0.253, respectively. The NOA nanoemulsion required less amounts of nisin and octanoic acid to achieve the effective antimicrobial effect against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus . In addition, the growth curves of E. coli and S. aureus were determined. The OD 600 of NOA nanoemulsion was significantly lower than free nisin after being incubated for 24 h ( p < 0.001), indicating that the antimicrobial effect of NOA nanoemulsion was outstanding. Meanwhile, the synergistic antimicrobial property of NOA nanoemulsion against E. coli and S. aureus was significantly better than free nisin under nonacid conditions ( p < 0.05). Overall, the results of this study may provide guidance for the further application of nisin in more forms.

Vitamin A palmitate and vitamin E TPGS, common derivatives of the unstable vitamins A and E, were successfully incorporated into biodegradable gelatin nanofibers via electrospinning. Electron microscopy showed that smooth cylindrical fibers were produced, albeit with a small amount of beading visible for the vitamin-loaded systems. The diameters of the fibers decrease with the addition of vitamins. The presence of the vitamins in the fibers was confirmed by IR spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction showed them to exist in the amorphous physical form post-electrospinning. The addition of vitamins did not affect the hydrophilic properties of the gelatin nanofibers. Fibers containing vitamin A or E alone showed a sustained release profile over more than 60 hours, and those incorporating both vitamins showed similar release characteristics, except that the extent of release for vitamin A was increased. Antibacterial tests demonstrated that materials loaded with vitamin E were effective in inhibiting the growth of E. coli and S. aureus. The fibers could promote the proliferation of fibroblasts during the early stages of culture, and enhance the expression of collagen-specific genes. In vivo tests determined that the fibers loaded with vitamins have better wound healing performance than a commercially used antiseptic gauze and casting films.

Vitamin E succinate has gained substantial attention as a potential therapeutic agent for cancer treatment due to its biomedical activities. One of the prominent methods of synthesizing vitamin E succinate is through enzymatic processes, which, although advantageous, presents inherent challenges related to optimization, scalability, and particularly, the poor stability of lipases in organic solvents. Our study addresses these challenges by conducting a comprehensive comparative analysis between Lipase UM1 and three other immobilized commercial lipases, demonstrating Lipase UM1's enhanced resistance to organic solvents and its superior efficiency in vitamin E succinate production. Further optimization experiments with Lipase UM1 led to an unprecedented conversion of 99%. Additionally, we scaled the reaction to a proof-of-concept industrial level. The synthesized product was verified using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance analysis, ensuring its quality and consistency. This study validates Lipase UM1 as an efficient catalyst for vitamin E succinate synthesis, offering a promising avenue for industrial production with potential applications in cancer therapy and beyond. Graphical Vitamin E succinate (VES) was synthesized through the catalysis of the organic solvent-stable Lipase UM1, resulting in an exceptional conversion.

Hydrogels exhibit mechanical properties very similar to biological skin, rendering them promising candidates for electronic skin (e-skin) sensors. However, these materials suffer from significant temperature-induced electrical drift and unstable interfacial contact with metallic electrodes. In this study, we employ elastic graphene foam as electrodes to realize a fully flexible hydrogel device architecture. By designing straight-line and serpentine hydrogel geometries, we enable temperature self-calibration during strain measurements. The resulting hydrogel sensor demonstrates exceptional performance, including constant strain sensitivity (GF = 2.44 with linearity R2 = 0.9999), rapid strain dynamic response (70 ms), low strain detection limit (0.05%), and low temperature drift. This approach not only addresses critical limitations in hydrogel-based sensing platforms but also establishes a robust framework for developing more reliable and versatile flexible sensors.

Electronic textiles (e-textiles), which combine the comfort of textiles with the functionality of soft electronics, have attracted much attention in wearable applications. However, scale-up fabrication of stretchable textiles with concurrent high stability and aesthetic appeal features poses significant challenges. Here, we report a scalable and customizable dip-coating strategy for the preparation of multiple-colored and functionally stable ionic conductive silk yarns ( i-SY ) and demonstrate their effectiveness in exercise posture correction. The i-SY preserves the inherent properties of silk fibers and ionic liquids, exhibiting improved mechanical properties, weaving capabilities, flame retardancy, and electrical conductivity. The method leverages the exceptional transparency of ionic liquids, facilitating the large-scale production of colored i-SYs to meet aesthetic demands. Additionally, the i-SY sensor exhibits exemplary sensing sensitivity and stability, enabling the real-time monitoring of human joint movements and facilitating precise posture correction during fitness exercises. We envision that the proposed sensing textile holds promise for applications in wearable devices, healthcare monitoring, and human–machine interfaces.

Stretchable strain sensors have the potential to significantly advance electronic healthcare (E-healthcare). However, current challenges, including a limited detection range, low sensitivity, aggregation of conductive nanoparticles, and the inherent rigidity of conductive polymers within hydrogel matrices, hinder their progress. In our study, we employed a dual approach: we tailored both physical and chemical bond densities and coupled them with conductive polymer nanoparticles. As a result, we developed a stretchable hydrogel strain sensor embedded with a quick response code. This innovation achieved an impressive detection range of up to 1500% and a high gauge factor of 16.6. By modifying the hydrogen bond strength and converting conductive polymer nanoparticles into linear polymer chains, we managed to enhance the sensor's stretchability to 2100%. Moreover, the incorporation of a quick response code enabled the sensor to simultaneously monitor in real-time and encode information. Thus, our sensor emerges as a robust contender for pioneering advancements in E-healthcare, potentially supporting intricate applications like rehabilitation progression tracking.

The growing popularity of e-cigarettes and the associated risks of nicotine addiction present a new challenge to global public health security. Measuring the nicotine levels in e-cigarette aerosols is essential to assess the safety of e-cigarettes. In this study, a rapid in situ method was developed for online quantification of nicotine in e-cigarette aerosols by using a homemade vacuum ultraviolet photoionization aerosol mass spectrometer (VUV-AMS). E-cigarette liquids with different nicotine concentrations were prepared to generate aerosols containing different levels of nicotine, which were employed as the calibration sources for nicotine quantification by VUV-AMS. The results showed that the mass concentration of nicotine in e-cigarette aerosols has a good linear relationship with its signal intensity in the mass spectrum, and the limits of detection and quantitation of nicotine by VUV-AMS were found to be 2.0 and 6.2 μg per puff respectively. Then the online method was utilized to measure five commercial e-cigarettes, and their nicotine yields were determined to be between 31 and 188 μg per puff with the nicotine fluxes from 7.7 to 70 μg s−1, agreeing with the results of the gas chromatography with a flame ionization detector (GC-FID). This study demonstrated the feasibility and advantages of VUV-AMS for quick quantification of nicotine in e-cigarette aerosols within seconds.

Textile-based triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) face challenges in achieving high performance and fulfilling functional requirement for special applications. This paper presents the development of a high-performance, thermally robust hierarchical polyimide (PI) nanofiber triboelectric yarns with a charge-trapping interlayer for application in firefighting E-textiles. The hierarchical nanofiber yarns, comprising a stainless-steel core electrode, a PI/MXene interlayer and PI outer tribo-layer, exhibit enhanced triboelectric performance due to the charge-trapping capabilities of MXene, which preventing the recombination of triboelectric and induced charges. When the MXene content in the charge-trapping interlayer reached 1 wt%, the corresponding TENG achieved its optimal output performance, with an output voltage of 153 V and a current of 13.13 μA and a peak power density of 0.84 W/m 2 under optimal conditions. It also demonstrates exceptional thermal stability, maintaining stable output at temperatures up to 400 °C. The integration of the TENG into E-textiles enables real-time monitoring of firefighters’ physical activities and location tracking, significantly enhancing their safety and operational efficiency in fire scenarios. Additionally, the TENG powers electroluminescent yarns, improving visibility in dense smoke and dust environments. This research opens new avenues for the application of smart wearable systems in high-temperature environments, providing effective strategies for ensuring the safety of firefighters in fire rescue operations.
