A novel entrapment matrix, calcium alginate (CA) coupled with activated carbon fiber (ACF), was prepared to immobilize Pseudomonas oleovorans DT4 for degrading tetrahydrofuran (THF). The addition of 1.5% ACF increased the adsorption capacity of the immobilized bead, thus resulting in an enhanced average removal rate of 30.3 mg/(L h). The synergism between adsorption and biodegradation was observed in the hybrid CA–ACF beads instead of in the system comprising CA beads and freely suspended ACF. The effective diffusion coefficient of the CA–ACF bead was not significantly affected by bead size, but the bead’s value of 1.14 × 10 −6 cm 2 /s (for the bead diameter of 0.4 cm) was larger than that of the CA bead by almost one order of magnitude based on the intraparticle diffusion–reaction kinetics analysis. Continuous treatment of the THF-containing wastewater was succeeded by CA–ACF immobilized cells in a packed-bed reactor for 54 d with a >90% removal efficiency.

The development of cost-effective and reactive oxygen carriers and the fast and complete conversion of solid fuels are two critical issues in the solid fuel chemical looping technology. Red mud, a solid waste from the alumina industry, was found to be an economic oxygen carrier candidate simultaneously realizing the use of solid wastes and the CO 2 abatement after comparing with other two different iron-based materials (pure Fe 2 O 3 and hematite). This study validated red mud as an excellent oxygen carrier to achieve the almost complete conversion of char in solid fuels (SFs) (99.4%) and meanwhile the hydrogen production with high-purity (97% H 2 purity) and higher H 2 yield (around 500 mL/g), in the optimized pyrolysis procedure of solid fuels with proper gasification agent and rationalized reaction temperatures (1000 °C) and residence time (10mins). Characterizations of red mud using SEM-EDS and XRD revealed that the unique microscopic crystalline structures of both Fe 2 O 3 and Ca 2 Al 2 SiO 7 particles nested on Na 4 Al 2 Si 2 O 9 molten substrate, implying that the existence of Na-containing component of the red mud OC likely accounts for its higher reactivity and stability in multiple redox cycles.

Tetracycline (TC) contamination in water is one of the key issues in global environmental protection, and traditional water treatment methods are difficult to remove antibiotic pollutants. Therefore, efficient and environmentally friendly treatment technologies are urgently needed. In this study, activated persulfate (PS) using a biochar-loaded nano zero-valent iron (BC-nZVI) advanced oxidation system was used to investigate the degradation effect, influencing factors, and mechanism of TC. BC-nZVI was prepared using the liquid-phase reduction method, and its structure and properties were analyzed by various characterization means. The results showed that nZVI was uniformly distributed on the surface or in the pores of BC, forming a stable complex. Degradation experiments showed that the BC-nZVI/PS system could degrade TC up to 99.57% under optimal conditions. The experiments under different conditions revealed that the iron-carbon ratio, dosing amount, PS concentration, and pH value all affected the degradation efficiency. Free radical burst and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments confirmed the dominant roles of hydroxyl and sulfate radicals in the degradation process, and LC–MS experiments revealed the multi-step reaction process of TC degradation. This study provides a scientific basis for the efficient treatment of TC pollution in water.

The flammability, poor mechanical properties, and high smoke production of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) have limited its practical applications in industry. In this work, activated carbon/phosphomolybdate 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium (AC/PIL4) and activated carbon/phosphomolybdate 1-hexadecy-3-methylimidazolium (AC/PIL16) were prepared by direct precipitation and used to improve the flame retardancy and mechanical properties of PVC. Owing to their special structures and compositions, AC/PIL4 and AC/PIL16 triggered PVC crosslinking to form a dense char residue during thermal degradation, prevented smoke generation, and reduced heat transfer to protect the matrix. AC/PIL4-PVC exhibited the lowest peak heat release rate (179.0 kW m−2) and peak smoke production rate (0.091 m2 s−1), which are 45.7% and 75.2% lower, respectively, than those of pure PVC. Further, AC/PIL4-PVC and in particular AC/PIL16-PVC (which has long organic chains) can improve the mechanical properties of PVC. The impact strengths of AC/PIL4-PVC (10.76 kJ m−2) and AC/PIL16-PVC (12.25 kJ m−2) were 34.5% and 53.1% higher, respectively, than that of pure PVC (8.00 kJ m−2).

Zero-valent iron-embedded biochar (ZVI/BC) is considered as an effective material for arsenic (As) immobilization in soil, but the stability of As after remediation against aging remains unknown. Herein, the effects of dry-wet and freeze-thaw aging on the immobilization of As in two As-contaminated soils amended by ZVI/BC were evaluated. ZVI/BC showed high immobilization capacity for As-contaminated soils with an over 82% decrease of bioavailable As, mainly due to the As-Fe co-precipitation accompanied with ZVI oxidation. The aging of dry-wet and freeze-thaw had an opposite effect on the bioavailability of As. After 35 rounds of dry-wet aging, bioavailable As concentration increased from 1.25‐9.50 to 1.83‐21.75 mg/kg, because of the oxidation dissolution of ZVI and the formation of mobile reduced As(III). By contrast, the crystallization of amorphous iron with the structural incorporation of sorbed As and the oxidation of As(III) into stable As(V) occurred during the 35 rounds of freeze-thaw aging, leading to the decrease of bioavailable As concentration from 9.50‐1.25 to 5.42‐0.45 mg/kg. Our results revealed that the stability of soil As after remediation by ZVI/BC varied with the different aging process, which needs more consideration for the long-term soil As immobilization in the different whether areas.

Abstract Phenol, considered as a stable and refractory organic pollutant, has posed an increasing threat to the environment and human health. Herein, the ZnO was regulated with nano-biochar (CCNC) derived from cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). The CCNC/ZnO photocatalysts were fabricated via in situ precipitation and carbonization, in which CNCs served as both the templates and carbon source. Meanwhile, Zn 2+ ions deposited on the surface of rod-like CNCs by electrostatic interaction. Subsequently, homogeneous dispersed ZnO nanoparticles were anchored onto the surface of CNCs, decreasing the ZnO nanoparticles size. As the CNCs transformed into CCNC, the resultant CCNC/ZnO photocatalysts demonstrated excellent degradation efficiency to phenol, corresponding to 99.8% within 90 min. Additionally, the CCNC/ZnO photocatalysts also displayed a satisfactory stability for five cycles without significant performance being decreased. The calculating and experimental results demonstrated that the conjugated graphitic structures of CCNC effectively reduced the band gap of ZnO from 3.26 to 2.96 eV. Besides, the CCNC remarkably promoted photogenerated electron-hole pairs separation and transfer, thereby improving the photodegradation efficiency for phenol. Furthermore, the efficiency for phenol photodegradation was comprehensively influenced by a combination of the ratio of photocatalyst, initial phenol concentration and catalyst dose, and pH value. This study broadened the application of CNCs in the field of photocatalysis, which provided a new perspective for the preparation of highly efficient photocatalysts using CNCs derived nano-biochar as a template and charge-transport pathway. In this study, a novel Fe–Mn–Ce oxide-modified biochar composite (FMCBC) was synthesized via pyrolysis to enhance the adsorption capacity of biochar (BC). Scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy confirmed that Fe, Mn, and Ce were successfully loaded onto the surface of the BC. A series of adsorption experiments showed that the FMCBC exhibited improved adsorption of As(III) in an aqueous environment. The adsorption process was well expressed by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption capacity of FMCBC reached 8.74 mg L −1 , which was 3.27 times greater than that of BC. The pH of the solution significantly influenced the adsorption of As(III), where the amount of As(III) adsorbed by FMCBC was maximized at pH 3. A high phosphate concentration inhibited adsorption, whereas nitrate and sulfate ions promoted As(III) adsorption and increased the FMCBC adsorption capacity. Similarly, with increasing humic acid concentration, the adsorption capacity of FMCBC for As(III) decreased; however, a low concentration of humic acid promoted adsorption. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis revealed that the adsorption of As(III) by FMCBC occurred through redox and surface complexation reactions. Therefore, FMCBC has excellent potential for purifying arsenic-contaminated water.

Rice straw-derived biochar (BC) has the advantage of low cost to remove tetracycline (TC) as a potential adsorbent, but it is limited by its poor adsorption capacity. On this basis, it was modified with tannic acid (TA) by precovering to increase the number of oxygen-containing functional groups. The structure and chemical properties of the modified BC were characterized and the adsorption behavior of TC on the modified BC was tested. The adsorption kinetics and isothermal data indicated that the adsorption performance of TC was improved after modification, and the adsorption capacity reached 308 mg/g, which was better than other congeneric adsorbents. The adsorption mechanism mainly included physical adsorption, electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding, and π–π interaction. The results of this study revealed that TA promoted the removal of TC from BC, and it was also beneficial to the rice straw-derived BC as an engineering adsorbent for the removal of TC from water.

Phenol , as the representative recalcitrant aromatic organic compounds (AOCs) in wastewater, has been listed as the priority pollutant due to its toxicity to organisms and ecosystem. Therefore, the exploration of efficient and practical technology for phenol elimination from wastewater has become an important research topic. Peroxymonosulfate-based advanced oxidation processes (PMS-based AOPs) have been developed to be an efficient phenol-degrading strategy. Thereinto, the development of high-performance and cost-effective catalyst is the crux of degrading pollutants in PMS-based AOPs. In this study, the ubiquitous ginkgo deciduous resource is expected to convert into low-cost heteroatoms self-doped biochar to activate PMS for the removal of phenol. The removal rate of phenol (10 mg/L) achieved 90% within 60 min in pH of 6 by using 1.0 mmol/L of PMS and 0.5 g/L of catalyst. The phenol degradation in the catalytic process was accomplished via •OH, SO 4 • − , 1 O 2 , and electron-transfer. On the basis of the correlation analysis, oxygen functional groups and sulfur functional groups were considered as the active sites that may be the most relevant to removal efficiency. This study proposed a facile method for converting deciduous waste resource into catalyst for triggering efficient catalytic oxidation process to degrade organic pollutants .

Magnetic biochar/ZnS composites were successfully synthesized by deposition of ZnS nanocrystals (NCs) on magnetic biochar in a polyol solution. The as-prepared composites showed a high maximum adsorption capacity for Pb (II) up to 367.65 mg g–1, which was 10 times higher than that of reported magnetic biochar. Furthermore, the lead-laden magnetic biochar/ZnS composites can be easily separated from the solution by a magnet after adsorption because of the excellent superparamagnetic properties. The composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The adsorption process was well described by the pseudo-first-order model, and the adsorption isotherm could be well fitted by the Langmuir model. The thermodynamic studies showed that the removal of Pb (II) was an endothermic and spontaneous process. The present results warrant the promising application of magnetic biochar/ZnS composites in removal of Pb (II) from contaminated water.

The co-occurrence of arsenic and fluoride in the water environment has led to many health concerns for living beings. Simultaneous removal of such ions is crucial to the safety of water resources , and biochar has been extensively engaged to address this issue. Here four magnetic biochars (mBCs) including pristine magnetic biochar and three aluminum (Al) and/or magnesium (Mg) oxides-anchored magnetic biochar (i.e., Al-mBC, Mg-mBC, and MgAl-mBC) were prepared via a facile pyrolysis method and then comprehensively evaluated as adsorbents for enhanced co-uptake of arsenate (As V ) and fluoride (F − ) from synthetic water. The mBC shows a high specific surface area of 205 m 2 g −1 , which dropped to 116, 80, and 114 m 2 g −1 upon the anchoring of Al, Mg, and Mg + Al, respectively. Our results suggest that the adsorption of either As V or F − is highly pH-dependent, and pH 4–6 is the optimal range for maximum adsorption. The adsorption isotherm data indicate that the MgAl-mBC adsorbent outranks all other mBCs for co-uptake of both As V and F − . The adsorption capacity maxima of MgAl-mBC are 34.45, and 21.59 mg g −1 for As V and F − , respectively (pH = 5, T = 10 °C), also highly outstripping other biochars reported in the literature. The magnetic feature of these mBCs enables us to fast reclaim and regenerate the exhausted adsorbents by an external magnet and dilute NaOH. The Al- and Mg-anchored mBCs are expected to be used as highly efficient adsorbents for environmental remediation of waters contaminated by both As V and F − .

The adsorption treatment of ammonium-containing wastewater has attracted significant global attention. Most enhanced adsorption methods employ chemical modification, and there are few reports on physical activation. We present a physical activation to explore whether physical ultrasound may enhance the adsorption performance and comprehensive utilisation of a new forestry waste, Caragana korshinskii was used as a feedstock to prepare activated biochar (ACB) by controlling the pyrolysis temperatures and ultrasound parameters. The optimal parameters were determined via batch adsorption of NH 4 + , and the adsorption characteristics were assessed by 8 kinds of models and influence experiments. Moreover, the physicochemical properties of ACB during the pyrolysis process were investigated, and the ultrasonic activation and adsorption mechanisms were discussed using multiple characterisation techniques. Additionally, the cost analysis, the safety of the ultrasonic process and disposal method also were evaluated. The results showed that the ultrasonic activation significantly enhanced the NH 4 + adsorption efficiency of biochar by approximately 5 times. ACB exhibited the best performance at 500 °C with an ultrasonic activation time of 480 min, frequency of 45 kHz, and power of 700 W. The ultrasonic activation reduced the biochar ash and induced pore formation, which increased the specific surface area through cavitation corrosion and micro-acoustic flow mechanism. The NH 4 + adsorption mechanisms comprised physicochemical processes , of which physical adsorption was dominant. The preparation cost of 1 kg ACB was about 0.42 US dollar, and no secondary pollution occurred in the activation process. The findings prove that ultrasonic technology is efficient and convenient for enhancing biochar adsorption performance, and thus is suitable for industrial applications and promotion.
