A novel core–shell amino-functionalized silica coated nanoscale zero valent iron (NH 2 –SiO 2 @NZVI) was prepared by the combination of liquid phase reducing method and improved Stöber method. The surface, structure and characteristics of the nanoparticles (NPs) were investigated by transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the elemental analysis. It was found that the appropriate dropping rate of NaBF 4 and the proper usage of 3-aminopropyl trimethoxysilane (APTMS) were the crucial and key step for the formation of highly uniform and desirable NH 2 –SiO 2 @NZVI particles. SEM, XRD results showed that the obtained NH 2 –SiO 2 @NZVI NPs has a good dispersibility and antioxidant capacity with the particle size around 120 nm, BET surface area around 123.38 m 2 /g when NaBH 4 dropping speed was 1 ml/min and the usage of APTMS was 0.3 ml/ml tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). NH 2 –SiO 2 @NZVI particles can effectively adsorb TCP with the first-order rate constant k obs of 0.0204 h −1 in 18 h and remove with a removal efficiency of 45.62% in 48 h.

Ethanediamine-modified zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-8 particles (ZIF-8-NH 2 ) is synthesized and incorporated in the poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrix to fabricate novel PVA/ZIF-8-NH 2 mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for pervaporation dehydration of ethanol. The PVA/ZIF-8-NH 2 MMMs exhibit enhanced membrane homogeneity and separation performance because of the higher hydrophilicity and restricted agglomeration of the particles, as compared to corresponding MMMs loaded with unmodified particles. The effect of ZIF-8-NH 2 loading in the MMMs is studied and the MMM with a 7.5 wt % ZIF-8-NH 2 loading shows the best pervaporation performance for ethanol dehydration at 40°C. Various characterization techniques (Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscope, contact angle, sorption test, etc.) are used to investigate the MMMs loaded with ZIF-8 and ZIF-8-NH 2 particles. The impact of operation conditions on pervaporation performance is also performed. The performance benchmarking shows that the MMMs have superior separation factors and comparable flux to most other PVA hybrid membranes. © 2016 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J , 62: 1728–1739, 2016

Photocatalytic NO removal technology is considered as one of the most effective green methods for reducing atmospheric NO but there remains the problems of lower efficiency and poor stability of photocatalysts . Rapid recombination of photogenerated electron (e − ) and holes (h + ) is known as a key issue that causes low activity and poor stability of catalysts. Herein, we report a novel AgCu@UiO-66-NH 2 photocatalyst (AgCu@UN) that is made up of AgCu alloy on the surface of Zr-MOF (UiO-66-NH 2 ) by employing in-situ photodeposition method. The experimental results of photocatalytic NO removal indicated that the optimized 0.5Ag0.5Cu@UN sample with 0.5 mg of Ag and Cu exhibited the best NO removal efficiency of 63 % for ppb-level atmospheric NO, more higher than that of pure UiO-66-NH 2 (38 %). The characterizations suggested that the excellent photocatalytic performance of 0.5Ag0.5Cu@UN can be ascribed to the efficient charge separation and transfer and the visible-light-harvesting ability due to benefiting electron migration process between AgCu alloys and UN. Moreover, the enriched electrons around AgCu could be transferred to O 2 to generate more superoxide radicals (•O 2 − ), which could oxidize NO to the final product, nitrate (NO 3 − ). The present findings can provide some novel insights for the design of efficient MOF based photocatalysts to eliminate low concentrations of NO X .

In this study, amino-modified micro-mesoporous silica (NH 2 -MMS) with hierarchical pores was prepared by modifying micro-mesoporous silica ZSM-5 with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane and used as an adsorbent in solid-phase extraction to analyze free fatty acids (FFAs) in krill oil during storage for an initial time. The Brunner Emmet Teller adsorption experiment and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy demonstrate that NH 2 -MMS, with a hierarchical pore structure, was successfully synthesized. The adsorption experiments, especially static adsorption, indicate that the absorption ability of the prepared NH 2 -MMS, with a hierarchical pore structure, toward FFAs was better than that of traditional amino-modified mesoporous silica (SBA-15) with a mesoporous structure at all temperature and concentrations. Fairly low limits of detection (0.06–0.15 μg g −1 ), acceptable recoveries (85.16–94.31%), and precision (0.08–5.26%) were attained under ideal circumstances. Moreover, NH 2 -MMS has the advantages of easy preparation and being environmentally friendly. As a result, this method offers an alternative to the current method for determining FFAs in different kinds of oil specimens.

Polyethylene terephthalate plastic is widely used and poses challenges in degradation, highlighting the importance of finding efficient degradation methods. In this study, MIL-125-NH 2 /BNQDs composites were synthesized to degrade polyethylene terephthalate plastic in the peroxymonosulfate-activated persistent photocatalysis system. The results showed that MIL-125-NH 2 /2BNQDs exhibited the best degradation effect on polyethylene terephthalate plastic activated by peroxymonosulfate under light conditions, with a degradation efficiency of 95.71 % achieved by adding 3 mM peroxymonosulfate, which was 3.01 times that of MIL-125-NH 2 alone. Furthermore, all composite samples retained persistent catalytic activity under dark conditions after light irradiation. After visible light irradiation, the polyethylene terephthalate degradation efficiency achieved 90.23 % when MIL-125-NH 2 /2BNQDs activated by peroxymonosulfate were used under dark conditions. The mechanism of action of reactive radicals in the polyethylene terephthalate degradation process was revealed by scavenger experiments. In-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis demonstrated that MIL-125-NH 2 /2BNQDs induce Ti 4+ to Ti 3+ transition through electron transfer, resulting in higher efficiency of peroxymonosulfate activation. The composites achieve improved electron storage capacity and enhanced peroxymonosulfate activation efficiency. Furthermore, the alteration of valence in transition metals (from Ti 4+ to Ti 3+ ) triggers photochromism, which amplifies the ability to absorb light. This study provides new insights for the development of novel photocatalysts for environmentally friendly degradation of polyethylene terephthalate plastics, contributing to the removal of plastic waste and the promotion of resource sustainability.

Fabricating metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) membranes directly onto metal surfaces as anticorrosive coatings is a feasible approach for the application of MOFs in corrosion protection . The MOFs membranes with specific organic groups can be further customized as versatile platforms for developing various functional coatings. Herein, UiO-66 and UiO-66-NH 2 membranes are synthesized onto aluminum surfaces through a polydopamine-assisted method, which are then grafted with superhydrophobic molecules of perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane (PFDTES). The -COOH groups in UiO-66 and -COOH/-NH 2 groups in UiO-66-NH 2 can serve as firm anchor sites for covalently grafting with PFDTES, enabling robust superhydrophobicity of the as-prepared coatings. The superhydrophobic surfaces exhibit water repellency (water contact angle of ∼165 o ), chemical (pH and salinity) and wear-resisting robustness, and long-term service durability. They also perform decent anti-fouling, self-cleaning, and anti-icing properties. Notably, sustainable corrosion protection can be provided by both coatings during immersion in saline solution (3.5 wt% NaCl) for one month and during a two-week salt spray test. Compared with UiO-66, the -NH 2 groups on UiO-66-NH 2 as extra grafting sites for firmer immobilization of more PFDTES molecules facilitate more durable superhydrophobicity and corrosion protection. We believe that this work could offer valuable insights into the multi-functional development of MOFs membranes-based coatings.

Methoxy-polyethylene glycol amine (mPEG-NH₂), an important pharmaceutical excipient, has been extensively utilized in the field of biomedicine. To advance the development of mPEG-NH₂-related drug delivery systems, it is crucial to understand the safety profile and cellular pharmacokinetic behavior of mPEG-NH₂ polymers. In this study, a straightforward analytical assay based on ultra-high performance liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) for quantifying mPEG 5 -NH₂ in biological matrices was established and validated. Multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) transitions were selected for quantification of mPEG 5 -NH₂ (mass-to-charge ratio, m/z 252.1 → 87.7) and octaethylene glycol (OH-PEG 8 -OH) (mass-to-charge ratio, m/z 371.2 → 89.2). The UHPLC-MS/MS assay demonstrated excellent linearity within the concentration range of 0.01–10 μg/mL, with an R² value of 0.9996. Both intra-day and inter-day accuracies and precisions of the analytical method were within ± 9.19 %. This analytical assay was successfully applied to study the in vitro cellular toxicity and uptake behavior of mPEG 5 -NH₂ in MCF-7 cells. The results indicate that high doses of mPEG 5 -NH₂ may have potential toxicity to MCF-7 cells.

The magnetic-luminescent bifunctional nanospheres NH 2 –Fe 3 O 4 /HMDA[Eu(DBM) 4 ] were prepared by coating the amino-functionalized Fe 3 O 4 nanospheres with HMDA[Eu(DBM) 4 ]. The X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy of the bifunctional nanospheres were characterized. Molecular simulations of the adsorption configurations of the NH 2 –Fe 3 O 4 /HMDA[Eu(DBM) 4 ] were performed. The photoluminescence and magnetic properties of the nanospheres were investigated. Magnetic particle inspection utilizing NH 2 –Fe 3 O 4 /HMDA[Eu(DBM) 4 ] nanospheres was carried out to detect cracks on the coupling surface. The magnetic field at the defects of the component under the magnetic field was simulated and analyzed. Furthermore, simulations and analyses were performed to examine the magnetic field distribution at the cracks under an applied magnetic field. The magnetic-luminescent bifunctional nanospheres NH 2 –Fe 3 O 4 /HMDA[Eu(DBM) 4 ] show great promise for widespread application in magnetic particle inspection due to their high visibility under ultraviolet light and controllability in the presence of magnetic fields.

The utilization of titanium dioxide (TiO2) as a photocatalyst for the treatment of wastewater has attracted significant attention in the environmental field. Herein, we prepared an NH2-MIL-125-derived N-doped TiO2@C Visible Light Catalyst through an in situ calcination method. The nitrogen element in the organic connector was released through calcination, simultaneously doping into the sample, thereby enhancing its spectral response to cover the visible region. The as-prepared N-doped TiO2@C catalyst exhibited a preserved cage structure even after calcination, thereby alleviating the optical shielding effect and further augmenting its photocatalytic performance by increasing the reaction sites between the catalyst and pollutants. The calcination time of the N-doped TiO2@C-450 °C catalyst was optimized to achieve a balance between the TiO2content and nitrogen doping level, ensuring efficient degradation rates for basic fuchsin (99.7%), Rhodamine B (89.9%) and tetracycline hydrochloride (93%) within 90 min. Thus, this study presents a feasible strategy for the efficient degradation of pollutants under visible light. Keywords:titanium dioxide;NH2-MIL-125;N-doped TiO2@C;visible light photocatalysis;wastewater pollutants

The adhesion of bacteria to the surface leads to formation of biofilms causing numerous infection problems in implanting medical devices or interventional therapy. Traditional treatment for such problems is generally to administrate patients with antibiotics or antifungal agent. Alternatively, devices are taken out of the body to mechanically destroy the biofilm and re-used by surgery. In this study, a straightforward method was developed to remove biofilms using a MXene-based photothermal hydrogel. The hydrogel consists of dynamic crosslinking network formed by Schiff-base reaction between aldehyde-containing xyloglucan (OXG) and amine-containing MXene (NH 2 -MXene), which showed efficient killing of both gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) and gram-negative Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) bacteria upon near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation. The NH 2 -MXene/OXG nanocomposite hydrogel showed a high photothermal antibacterial efficiency and stable photothermal conversion, demonstrated by efficient removal of biofilms ex vivo .

Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), which were difficult to biodegrade and posed significant ecological and health risks, had made their removal an urgent global challenge. Herein, NH 2 -MCM-41 was designed by modifying MCM-41 with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTS) to remove PFOA, PFOS and OBS. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results indicated that though the implanting of NH 2 – on MCM-41 decreased S BET and pore size, but it dramatically increased the PFOA, PFOS and OBS adsorption capacity. The maximum uptake capacity of NH 2 -MCM-41 increased from 14.41 to 350.61, 19.53 to 445.11, and 28.6 to 452.98 mg/g for PFOA, PFOS and OBS, respectively. Three PFCs adsorptions were more favorable under acidic condition. Both the pseudo-second-order and intra-particle diffusion models provided a good fit for the kinetic data, and the adsorption isotherms were well described by the Langmuir and Freundlich models. The primary adsorption mechanisms involved hydrophobic interactions, electrostatic forces, H bond interaction and micellar or sub-micellar effects. This study demonstrated valuable insights into the applicability of NH 2 -MCM-41 for environmental remediation.

Hexavalent chromium in industrial wastewater poses a serious threat to ecosystems. Photocatalytic technology has been seen as a promising strategy for removing heavy metal ions. Construction of heterostructures offered a promising strategy to enhance the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers, thereby improving photocatalytic performance. Herein, ZnWO 4 /UiO-66-NH 2 heterostructures were synthesized by a two-step hydrothermal method. The synthesized samples were systematically characterized via a variety of techniques, alongside an exploration of the associated photocatalytic mechanism. ZnWO 4 /UiO-66-NH 2 -2 exhibited an exceptional photocatalytic performance, attaining a 97 % degradation of hexavalent chromium within 60 min, approximately 1.3 and 4.7 times that of UiO-66-NH 2 and ZnWO 4 , respectively. The transient photocurrent response, photoluminescence (PL), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results indicate that constructing heterostructures can effectively accelerate the migration of electrons while simultaneously suppressing the recombination process of photogenerated carriers. In addition, Active species trapping experiments revealed that the photogenerated electrons were the main active substances in photoreduction reaction. This study offers an effective strategy for photocatalytic reduction of hexavalent chromium.
