Morphological control is extremely difficult during the second-stage growth on existing nanoparticles . Here, we show that it is possible to combine nanorod and nanoplate morphologies by using partially encapsulated polystyrene- block -poly(acrylic acid) shells as the mask. Au nanoplates were grown selectively from the exposed surface of the Au nanorod, with consistent orientation for each nanorod. As such, we achieve three levels of synthetic control simultaneously: 1) the polymer mask focuses the Au deposition onto a few sites, so that the nanoplates could extend out prominently; 2) the longitudinal extension of the nanorod could be shifted to the traverse growth of nanoplates by using iodide ions as the inhibitor; 3) the nanoplates grow from only one of the twin planes because of the dynamic competition via the depletion sphere mechanism.

Using sunlight as renewable resource has stimulated the development of sustainable photocatalysts that can collect visible light. Semiconductor nanowire-based photocatalysts have attracted increasing interest due to their unique optical, electronic, and structural advantages. Here, noble metal-semiconductor hybrid Au/ZnO nanowires have been fabricated by chemical vapor deposition method. The hybrid photocatalysts were well characterized by SEM, TEM, EDS, XRD, XPS, UV–visible spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Compared with ZnO nanowires, Au/ZnO heterostructures exhibited significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance due to the synergistic combination of Au and ZnO. Optical properties were modeled to support our interpretation of photocatalytic mechanisms. Our work provides a feasible strategy to prepare plasmonic photocatalysts and will also deepen the understanding of the plasmon enhanced photocatalytic performance in hybrid photocatalysts.

Optimizing morphology, structure, and composition of noble metal bimetallic nanomaterials not only enhances their electroactivity and stability but also expands their scope of application. In this work, ultrafine bimetallic Au@Rh core-shell nanowires (Au@Rh ultra-NWs) are synthesized by simple wet chemical strategy using ultrafine Au nanowires (Au ultra-NWs) with 5.50 nm diameter as substrate and explore their potential application for hydrazine electro-oxidation reaction (HeOR) in an alkaline solution. Experimental and calculational results demonstrate that bimetallic Au@Rh ultra-NWs with optimal component reveal 13.6-fold Rh-mass activity enhancement for HeOR at 0.4 V potential relative to commercial Rh nanocrystals (Rh c-NCs), which can be ascribed to the ultrathin Rh shell thickness and the electronic effect caused by the interaction between Au core and Rh shell. Under light irradiation conditions, bimetallic Au@Rh ultra-NWs further show plasmon-promoted HeOR activity, which originates from photoelectric and photothermal effects caused by localized surface plasmon resonance of Au ultra-NWs core.

We herein investigate the solar photothermal conversion performances of Au nanofluids both experimentally and theoretically. In the experiments, the Au nanofluids are loaded into a beaker and are exposed to solar radiation. The solar photothermal conversion efficiency performances of the Au nanofluids using different nanoparticle (NP) volume fractions and solar intensities are discussed. Experimental results show that the equilibrium temperature increases as the NP volume fraction and solar intensity increase, although the extent of variation in the photothermal conversion efficiency declines under these conditions. Furthermore, a theoretical analysis based on the Rayleigh scattering approximation and the Beer-Lambert Law to predict the solar absorption efficiency is discussed. A good agreement between the calculated absorption efficiency and the experimental solar photothermal conversion efficiency is reported. The absorption efficiency increases exponentially with increasing collector height and NP volume fraction. Moreover, the optimization of NP selection and collector design for direct absorption solar collectors without consideration of the temperature field is of particular scientific importance.

LaPO 4 and hydroxyapatite (Ca 10 (PO 4 ) 6 (OH) 2 ) are typical metal phosphates recently found to be useful for making supported metal or metal oxide catalysts, but CePO 4 (also belonging to the metal phosphate family) has been rarely used to make supported catalysts. It would be interesting to develop CePO 4 -supported catalysts and explore their catalytic applications. Herein, hexagonal CePO 4 nanorods (denoted as CePO 4 -H), hexagonal CePO 4 nanowires (CePO 4 -HNW), monoclinic CePO 4 nanoparticles (CePO 4 -M), and monoclinic CePO 4 nanowires (CePO 4 -MNW) prepared by different methods were used to support gold via deposition-precipitation with urea (DPU). The gold contents of these catalysts were all around 1 wt%. The catalytic activities of these Au/CePO 4 catalysts in CO oxidation were found to follow the sequence of Au/CePO 4 -MNW > Au/CePO 4 -HNW > Au/CePO 4 -M > Au/CePO 4 -H. These catalysts were characterized by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES), N 2 adsorption–desorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), oxygen temperature-programmed desorption (O 2 -TPD), and CO 2 temperature-programmed desorption (CO 2 -TPD) to find possible correlations between the physicochemical properties and catalytic activities of these catalysts.

In this work, functional organic ligands are incorporated into the structurally stable metal–organic framework (UiO-66-SPA) to regulate the electrostatic potential and coordination positions of its inner and outer surfaces. The gold extraction efficiency of functionalized MOFs from acidic gold-containing wastewater is 2.65 times that of non-functionalized UiO-66-(SH) 2 . In this way, efficient recovery of Au(III) in complex trace Au(III) wastewater is achieved. After multiple regeneration cycles, UiO-66-SPA still maintains 99% of its adsorption capacity. Through characterization techniques such as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), density functional theory (DFT) calculations, kinetics, and thermodynamics, it is confirmed that the adsorption of Au(III) by UiO-66-SPA involves the synergistic effect of chelation coordination. This work provides a way to enhance adsorption for the post-modification of MOFs. The experiment of recovering Au(III) from industrial simulated wastewater improves the experimental data for the application of this material in Au(III) recovery. The research in this article is of great significance for MOFs materials in environmental protection, sustainable development of non-renewable resources, and green development of Au(III) resources.

The upcycling of Au from vast and environmentally burdensome electronic-waste rich in valuable metals provides a sustainable pathway for precious metal utilization and hazardous substance management. Here, we present a strategy that integrates ultrasound-assisted stripping with tetraoctylammonium-bromide (TOA-Br) extraction to upcycle Au from waste gold-finger printed circuit boards (gf-PCBs) into ultrasmall Au nanocatalysts for electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction reaction (eCO 2 RR), thereby overcoming the complexity and secondary-pollution inherent in conventional hydrometallurgy. Specifically, in non-crushed gf-PCBs, the Au-layer is stripped as foil, primarily driven by ultrasound-enhanced contact and reactivity between the underlying non-precious metal-layers (Ni, Cu) and the leachate. Importantly, the Au-rich slags from gf-PCBs are upcycled into ultrasmall Au nanoparticles (TOA-Au(SH)/PCB, 0.5–3 nm) via TOA-Br capture of AuCl 4 − in H 2 O 2 -regulated leachates, achieving Au recovery exceeding 99 % with impurities below 1.06 %. Mechanistic analyses reveal that the superior Au-separation efficiency arises from the H 2 O 2 -induced weakening of the coordination ability of active Cl − species toward metal ions in the leachate, while Au 3+ forms the strongly coordinated AuCl 4 − complex, which exhibits much stronger affinity for the electrophilic N atoms in TOA-Br than other metal-chloride anions. Moreover, the TOA-Au(SH)/PCB with abundant low-coordination sites achieves 94.59 % FE CO at −0.87 V vs RHE in eCO 2 RR, matching pure metal-salt catalysts (TOA-Au(SH)/pure, 96.97 %) and confirming gf-PCBs as effective Au precursors. We also find that trace Cu residues in TOA-Au(SH)/PCB promote eCO 2 RR activity, but precise regulation of Cu is required to optimize adsorption of key intermediates.

Although the growth mechanisms (e.g., seed-induced growth and capping agent orientation) of bimetal nanocrystals (e.g., core–shell, alloy, segmented, and branched) from artificial experimental speculation and theoretical calculation have been widely accepted, precisely revealing their growth mechanisms is still tremendously challenging. In this work, we utilized redox reaction kinetics for the first time to successfully reveal the aqueous sequential growth mechanism between Au and Ag nanocrystals of segmented Ag-Au-Ag heterojunction nanorods (HJNRs) in a one-step and high-temperature aqueous system. Herein, electrode potentials of different electrical pairs (e.g., Ag+/Ag and AuCl4–/Au) at 200 °C could be calculated through using the Helgeson–Kirkham–Flowers state and other equations, from which whether Au and Ag nanocrystals grew successively and formed segmented Ag-Au-Ag HJNRs could be correctly assessed. The redox reaction kinetics mechanism can also explain well the aqueous-phase growth mechanisms of other bimetal nanocrystals and paves a promising avenue for the design and synthesis of other one-dimensional segmented metal nanostructures.

In this work, Au@Ag core-shell nanoparticles with different size Au TNPs as the core were synthesized through seed-mediated growth method. Various types of Au TNP@Ag core-shell nanoparticles were easily prepared by varying the amounts of AgNO 3 using the CTAC as surfactant . We have further investigated their plasmonic properties of various types of Au TNP@Ag core-shell nanoparticles. Au TNP@Ag core-shell nanoparticles have tunable localized surface plasmon resonance properties which can be controlled by volumes of AgNO 3 . The absorption peak of Au TNP@Ag core-shell nanoparticles increased from one to five and the intensity gradually increased with the increase of the volume of AgNO 3 . Moreover, by changing the core size from 62 nm to 110 nm, the characteristic absorption of Au TNP@Ag core-shell nanoparticles could be shifted from visible to infrared range. Then we analyze the influence of halide ions on the shape formation of Au TNP@Ag core-shell nanoparticles. Au TNP@Ag triangular nanoprism, Au TNP@Ag nanocube and Au TNP@Ag right bipyramid only can be obtained in the in the presence of Cl - while not other halide ions (Br - , I - ). The adsorption of Cl - and oxidative etching of Cl - /O 2 lead to the formation of single crystal Au TNP@Ag nanocube and Au TNP@Ag right bipyramid with well-defined shaped Au TNP. The present work expanded the field of gold and silver core-shell nanoparticles. More importantly, a large number of new nanomaterials have been obtained and shows promising applications in optics and sensing.

Nanomaterial-based artificial peroxidase has attracted extensive interests due to their distinct advantages over natural counterpart. Cu@Au/Pt and Cu@Ag/Pt nanocomposite with rambutan-like structure were prepared and discovered to function like peroxidase, which was illustrated by catalyzing the oxidation reaction of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) accompanied with a blue color change. Steady-state investigation indicates that the catalytic kinetics of Cu@Au/Pt and Cu@Ag/Pt all followed typical Michaelis–Menten behaviors and Cu@Au/Pt showed a strong affinity for H2O2, while Cu@Ag/Pt showed strong affinity for TMB. The color change and absorbance intensity strongly depend on the concentration of H2O2, thus the direct determination of H2O2 and indirect detection of glucose were demonstrated using Cu@Au/Pt with a detection limit of 1.5 μM and 6 μM, respectively. What is more important, the method was applied for detection of glucose in 50% fetal bovine serum with a detection limit of 80 μM, which is much lower than the lowest glucose content in blood for diabetes (7 mM). Moreover, the Cu@Au/Pt nanocomposite were also successfully applied for sensing L-cysteine because of the inhibition effect. Considering the good peroxidase-like activity and novel structure, Cu@Au(Ag)/Pt is expected to have a wide range of applications in bioassays and biocatalysis.

The remarkable limitations in photocatalysis still remain: low utilization of visible light, poor charge transfer and separation, and insufficient active sites. To address these issues, herein, Au–Bi2WO6 hybrid photocatalysts are synthesized through a one-step solvothermal method, possessing a good combination of plasmonic Au nanoparticles (NPs) and abundant oxygen vacancies (OVs) in the hybrid nanostructures. The Au–Bi2WO6 hybrid photocatalyst with an optimal Au content exhibits outstanding activity and selectivity toward selective oxidation of aromatic amines under visible light, far outperforming pure Bi2WO6 nanostructures. The collaborative contributions of hot charge carriers from Au NPs, photoexcited electron–hole pairs from Bi2WO6, and the OVs for efficient adsorption–activation of molecular O2 result in the enhanced photocatalysis for selective oxidation under visible-light irradiation. This study will motivate the rational construction of metal–semiconductor hybrid photocatalysts with multiple active sites and boost the utilization of solar energy to drive a broad range of organic transformations.

A new type of Au nanoparticles (NPs) decorated hollow flower-like ZnO@ZnS (HZOS) heterostructure (HS) is elaborately designed as efficient photocatalyst for water splitting application. The optimal Au decorated HZOS exhibits a high hydrogen generation rate of 569.81 μmol/h (10 mg of catalyst), which is 345, 374 and 11 times higher than that of pristine ZnO (1.65 μmol/h), ZnS (1.52 μmol/h) and ZnO@ZnS (51.7 μmol/h), respectively. Furthermore, its apparent quantum efficiency reaches to 25.47% at the wavelength of 365 nm. The significantly enhanced H 2 evolution can be attributed to the synergistic effects from the hollow channel structure and the deposited Au NPs. The hollow channel creates a new migration pathway where charge carriers can transfer towards the hollow channel in addition to the outer surface of the photocatalyst, thus significantly reducing the migration distance of charge carriers, suppressing the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes, and reducing their transfer resistance. The decoration of Au NPs at the interface between ZnO and ZnS not only facilitates the directional migration of charge carriers because of the formation of Schottky barrier, but also works as electron shuttles to form a Z-scheme transfer process, effectively promoting the separation and migration of charge carriers.
