Synergistic Optimization of Reference Electrode and Solid Electrolyte for Bi/Bi2O3 Oxygen Sensors

Guodong Liu,Shenghui Lu,Bo Qin,Zhangshun Ruan,Yuhui Wang,Lu Li,Xiaogang Fu,Naiqin Zhao

The Bi/Bi2O3-type oxygen sensor is extensively employed for oxygen monitoring in liquid lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE)-cooled reactors, yet its low-temperature measurement accuracy remains a critical bottleneck limiting engineering deployment. This study aims to extend the lower operating temperature limit of the sensor through synergistic optimization of the reference electrode and solid electrolyte. The effects of the Bi/Bi2O3mass ratio, filling amount, and yttria-partially stabilized zirconia (YPSZ) electrolyte wall thickness on sensor performance were systematically investigated over 300–600 °C. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and finite element simulations (COMSOL Multiphysics®6.3, COMSOL Inc., Stockholm, Sweden) were used to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. The results show that the optimized sensor with a Bi/Bi2O3mass ratio of 95:5, a filling amount of 10 g, and a YPSZ wall thickness of 1.5 mm extended the stable operating limit from 350 °C to 300 °C, achieving a relative electromotive force error of 3.13% at 300 °C and maintaining over 4000 h of drift-free service. The improved low-temperature accuracy is attributed to the reduced oxygen ion migration activation energy (0.48 eV) and lower bulk impedance of the thick-walled YPSZ after high-temperature activation. These findings provide a material optimization strategy and theoretical basis for wide-temperature-range, long-lifetime oxygen sensing in lead-based reactors.

Polyacrylonitrile-loaded bismuth (Bi) porous carbon materials for efficient adsorption of iodine vapour

Chao Zhang,Tianhao Sun,Shuangping Xu,Juncheng Ma,Mingyu Zhang,Yanqing Qu,Hongge Jia,Jingyu Xu,Xing Wang

Bismuth-based materials are regarded as green materials for dealing with radioactive iodine. However, the sole use of Bi has problems such as agglomeration. Dispersing Bi in the matrix material to overcome the disadvantage of Bi’s easy agglomeration to prepare Bi-based composites with low cost and high adsorption capacity is an urgent need for iodine gas capture. Here, five kinds of Bi-containing polyacrylonitrile (PAN) porous carbon materials (Bi/PAN-P) were prepared by thoroughly mixing Bi as adsorbent with contents of 10 wt%, 20 wt%, 30 wt%, 40 wt% and 50 wt%, PAN as the matrix and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as the solvent, and then carbonizing. The results show that the Bi loaded on Bi/PAN-P is uniformly distributed and the material is mainly mesoporous. It has a rapid adsorption rate for gaseous iodine, reaching more than 50 % of the maximum adsorption capacity within the first 90 min, and its speed far exceeds the adsorption rate of pure PAN carbon materials. Especially when the Bi content is 30 wt%, the iodine adsorption capacity reaches 4057 mg/g, which is about 20 times that of commercial silver exchange zeolite. Based on experimental and model simulation results, the adsorption of iodine by Bi/PAN-P mainly through chemical adsorption.

Germanium oxide hybridization enhancing the optical response of Bi-doped glass and fiber

Ke Zhang,Jingfei Chen,Quan Dong,Dianhao Hou,Hongwei Li,Tianxia Wei,Xueliang Li,Xu Feng,Shifeng Zhou

Bismuth (Bi)-doped glass and fiber materials exhibit excellent optical performance and have potential in fields such as fiber communication and tunable lasers. However, the preparation of Bi-doped glass and fiber with high optical activity is still confronted with huge challenges. This study proposes a germanium oxide hybridization strategy to enhance near-infrared emission in Bi-doped glass. In addition, by the systematical optimization of the optical response and processability of the glass system, Bi-doped glass fibers are successfully constructed. The constructed glass fibers have excellent optical performance, and the enhanced amplified spontaneous emission is realized. They show potentials for applications in broadband fiber amplifiers and tunable lasers.

Construction of the novel PMA@Bi-MOF catalyst for effective fatty acid esterification

Qiuyun Zhang,Yanting Lei,Luyan Li,Jiao Lei,Mengmeng Hu,Taoli Deng,Yutao Zhang,Peihua Ma

A novel Bi-based metal-organic framework impregnated phosphomolybdic acid (PMA@Bi-MOF) catalyst has been fabricated via a simple hydrothermal procedure, and successfully applied in the preparation of biodiesel using oleic acid (OA) as the raw material. The PMA@Bi-MOF composites were exhaustively characterized with the help of FTIR , XRD, TPD-NH 3 , SEM-EDX, N 2 -physisorption, TGA , and XPS analyses. Experimental findings showed that the PMA@Bi-BTC exhibited a higher activity than that of PMA@Bi-BDC and Bi-BTC, attributed to its textural property, the presence of more acid sites with higher strength, and synergistic catalytic effects between PMA and Bi-BTC. The optimum conditions for esterification of OA, with a conversion of up to 92.5%, were found to be a molar ratio of methanol to OA of 20:1 and 0.15g PMA@Bi-BTC catalyst at 160 °C in 3 h. Meanwhile, reused studies indicated that the OA conversion reached more than 80% after seven reaction cycles. Furthermore, the activation energy of esterification catalyzed by PMA@Bi-BTC was also calculated as 54.8 kJ/mol. It is expected that our study provides an efficient route to biofuel production involving polyoxometalates/MOF synergistic catalysts.

Bi-Functionalized Transferrin@MoS2-PEG Nanosheets for Improving Cellular Uptake in HepG2 Cells

Si Xu,Shanshan Liang,Bing Wang,Jiali Wang,Meng Wang,Lingna Zheng,Hao Fang,Tingfeng Zhang,Yi Bi,Weiyue Feng

Pre-coating with a protein corona on the surface of nanomaterials (NMs) is an important strategy for reducing non-specific serum protein absorption while maintaining targeting specificity. Here, we present lipoic acid-terminated polyethylene glycol and transferrin bi-functionalized MoS2nanosheets ([email protected]2-PEG NSs) as a feasible approach to enhance cellular uptake.[email protected]2-PEG NSs can maintain good dispersion stability in cell culture medium and effectively protect MoS2NSs from oxidation in ambient aqueous conditions. Competitive adsorption experiments indicate that transferrin was more prone to bind MoS2NSs than bovine serum albumin (BSA). It is noteworthy that single HepG2 cell uptake of[email protected]2-PEG presented a heterogeneous distribution pattern, and the cellular uptake amount spanned a broader range (from 0.4 fg to 2.4 fg). Comparatively, the intracellular Mo masses in HepG2 cells treated with[email protected]2-PEG and MoS2-PEG showed narrower distribution, indicating homogeneous uptake in the single HepG2 cells. Over 5% of HepG2 cells presented uptake of the[email protected]2-PEG over 1.2 fg of Mo, about three-fold that of[email protected]2-PEG (0.4 fg of Mo). Overall, this work suggests that Tf coating enhances the cellular uptake of MoS2NSs and is a promising strategy for improving the intracellular uptake efficiency of cancer cells.Keywords:bi-functionalization;[email protected]2-PEG nanosheets;HepG2 cellular uptake

A New (De)Intercalation MXene/Bi Cathode for Ultrastable Aqueous Zinc-Ion Battery

Qiang Wang,Mengjie Wang,Li Wen,Wei Zeng,Binghui Ge,Chaofeng Zhang,Yang Yue,Siliang Wang

The emerging aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have received extensive attention and research due to their unique advantages of low cost, safety, and environmental friendliness. However, the development of appropriate cathode materials to improve battery performance remains a major challenge. Herein, a new MXene and Bi (MXene/Bi) composite material is first applied as the (de)intercalation cathode of ZIB. The dispersed MXene nanosheets in the composite materials greatly improve the conductivity and hydrophilicity of the electrode, and prevent the stacking and the volume expansion in the charge/discharge process of 2D Bi fragments. The experimental results show that composite MXene/Bi electrode has remarkable capacity and ultralong life. Next, the good kinetics and (de)intercalation energy storage mechanism of ZIB are revealed through abundant electrochemical tests and ex situ characterization. The quasi-solid-state (QSS) ZIB is also constructed, showing superior electrochemical performance, flexibility, pressure resistance, and heat resistance. Besides, the QSS ZIB can be used directly as a self-powered pressure sensor to monitor the external pressure in real time based on the response current. This study not only demonstrates that MXene/Bi is a potential cathode for ZIBs, but also offers a feasible path to explore and design the next generation of high-performance multifunctional ZIBs.

Graphene-Encapsulated Nitrogen-doped Carbon@Bi Enables Rapid, Ultrahigh and Durable Sodium Storage

Meixue Wang,Huijun Li,Xiaoqin Cheng,Shizhen Tian,Xiaomin Wang

Graphical New bismuth anode material : As double encapsulated bismuth-based composite was investigated in a sodium half-cell, exhibiting good cycling stability and high discharge capacity. The introduction of nitrogen-doped carbon and graphene has resulted in a three-dimensional interconnected network structure, rich reaction sites and sites. This structure achieves a high degree of electrode reversibility and increases the electrical capacity. Bismuth (Bi) has promising applications as anode in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to its suitable alloy voltage, unique lattice structure and high volumetric specific capacity. However, the severe structural degradation and poor cycling performance of Bi-anode during cycling limits its practical application. Here, we designed and synthesized graphene-encapsulated nitrogen-doped carbon@bismuth (N−C@Bi/G) composites as anode materials for SIBs by a two-step hydrothermal and thermal treatment method to solve the above problems. The N−C@Bi/G composite anode material exhibits excellent sodium storage performance, high capacity (280 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 and an initial coulombic efficiency of 78.87 %) and long-term cycling stability (260 mAh g −1 after 1000 cycles at 2 A g −1 ). Electrochemical analysis and DFT calculations show that the fast reaction kinetics of N−C@Bi/G is directly related to the introduction of nitrogen-doped carbon enriching the pore structure and increasing the active sites. Meanwhile, through the aid of in-situ X-ray diffraction (XRD), the reaction mechanism and interphase evolution of N−C@Bi/G composite are revealed, which provides an important theoretical basis for the application of SIBs.

High dielectric constant and magnetic properties of Bi-In Co-substituted YIG ferrites

Xuening Han,Jie Li,Hao Wu,Kai Sun,Yixin Chen,Lijun Jia,Huaiwu Zhang,Pengjie Zhang,Chunyang Wu

In this paper, the Bi-In co-substituted YIG ferrite materials composed of Y 3− x Bi x Fe 4.55 In 0.45 O 12 ( x  = 0.0–1.0 with a step of 0.2) were synthesized by a conventional solid-state route. Samples with different Bi 3+ ion contents were sintered at different temperatures. The phase formation, microstructure, dielectric and magnetic properties of samples were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), impedance analyzer, vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and ferromagnetic resonance (FMR). The results showed that Bi 3+ ion substitution could reduce the sintering temperature, increase the bulk density ( d b ), improve the dielectric constant ( ε' = 22.26@100 MHz at  ×   = 1.0) and keep a high saturation magnetization ( 4πM S  = 1700–1850 Gs), but led to the increase of the FMR linewidth ( ΔH  = 316.21 Oe at  ×   = 1.0).

Porous Defective Bi/Bi3NbO7 Nanosheets for Efficient Photocatalytic NO Removal under Visible Light

Ting Gao,Jingqi Lin,Ke Zhang,Mohsen Padervand,Yifan Zhang,Wei Zhang,Menglin Shi,Chuanyi Wang

Since conventional techniques are ineffective for NO removal at low concentrations, photocatalysis has become attractive in this regard, recently. However, in practice, photocatalytic NO removal has drawbacks such as limited light absorption and the proclivity of producing toxic by-products. To address these issues, novel defective Bi/Bi3NbO7structures with good porosity were fabricated by a solvothermal method and used for enhanced photocatalytic NO removal under visible light irradiation. The morphological and structural properties of the prepared materials were comprehensively analyzed. The optimal photocatalytic activity of pore-defective Bi/Bi3NbO7for NO removal was 60.3%, when the molar ratios of urea and Bi(NO)3•5H2O to pristine Bi3NbO7were 1:25 and 1:2, respectively, under the following operational conditions: NO concentration of 700 ppb, catalyst dosage of 50 mg and irradiation time of 14 min. The induced defects and the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of Bi nanodots made remarkable contributions to improving the photocatalytic NO removal as well as inhibiting the toxic byproduct NO2. The photocatalytic NO removal pathway over the prepared photocatalysts was further mechanistically clarified taking advantage of EPR results and scavenging experiments. Considering the increased NO generation in the atmosphere, this work may provide novel insights for designing effective porous photocatalysts to treat gaseous toxic pollutants.Keywords:photocatalysis;Bi3NbO7;surface plasmon resonance;NO removal;defects

Synergistic effects of Bi and N doped on ZnO nanorods for efficient photocatalysis

N.R. Khalid,Hamid Ishtiaq,Faisal Ali,M.B. Tahir,Sumaira Naeem,A. Ul-Hamid,M. Ikram,T. Iqbal,M. Rizwan Kamal,Hussein Alrobei,Meshal Alzaid,A. Dahshan

The fast pace of industrial growth during the current decade has seen a large family of dyes employed copiously in the production of various products such as paper and ink. These dyes pollute earth's ecosystems. Researchers look at various ways to degrade these dyes including the use of suitable nanomaterials . ZnO is an important semiconductor material that can be employed for this purpose. In this research work, we optimized the photocatalytic capability of ZnO by co-doping it with 1–7 wt% of Bi and N. The synthesized Bi and N co-doped ZnO nanorod samples showed excellent photocatalytic behavior towards Rhodamine-B (RhB). It was confirmed using XRD and SEM that (5, 2.5) wt.% Bi/N co-doped ZnO nanorods exhibited unique morphology and structure. EDX successfully assessed the elemental composition of the synthesized samples. To provide further insight into its microstructure, the HRTEM and SAED analysis were performed. Optical properties were determined using PL and UV–Visible spectroscopy. The prepared nanorod material degraded almost 89% of RhB in 180 min. The superior degradation ability of co-doped ZnO material when exposed to visible portion of sunlight spectrum is credited to the decrease in the recombination rate of charges and an increase in the depth penetration of photons. The degradation efficiency of Bi/N co-doped ZnO material is enhanced due to reduced recombination rate and increased production of number of defects and oxygen vacancies .

Bi-layered nanofibrous membrane with osteogenic and antibacterial functions for periodontal tissue regeneration

Meiling Zhong,Jixia Lin,Yudie Yang,Mingzhuo Liu,Guanghua Guo,Dehui Ji,Richao Zhang,Jiali Zhang

Guided tissue regeneration (GTR) membranes have great potential to promote periodontal tissue regeneration and reestablishment. However, the regeneration potential and microbial infection resistance of current GTR membranes still need to be improved. Here, a bi-layered nanofibrous membrane on the basis of poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA)/gelatin with osteogenic and antibacterial functions was fabricated for periodontal tissue regeneration. The antimicrobial layer (AL) of the bi-layered nanofibrous membrane was composed of nanofibrous PLGA/gelatin nanofibers loaded with nano-silver (nAg), while the osteoconductive layer (OL) of the nanofibrous membrane consisted of PLGA/gelatin nanofibers loaded with nano-hydroxyapatite (nHA). The bi-layered nanofibrous membrane was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), transmission electron microscope (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The results showed that nHA and nAg particles were well evenly loaded or embedded in PLGA/gelatin nanofibers. The cell culture experiments suggested that the bi-layered nanofibrous membrane possessed good cytocompatibility and the OL of the bi-layered nanofibrous membrane possessed an enhanced osteogenic capacity for human osteoblast-like cells (MG63), which was verified by the good cell viability and the increased alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, respectively. The results of in vitro antimicrobial study displayed that the AL of the bi-layered nanofibrous membrane possessed an effective antibacterial capability. In conclusion, the prepared bi-layered nanofibrous membrane with osteogenic and antibacterial functions may have great potential for periodontal tissue regeneration and reestablishment.

Electrospinning of Highly Bi-Oriented Flexible Piezoelectric Nanofibers for Anisotropic-Responsive Intelligent Sensing

Zhuzhu Shao,Xuan Zhang,Jingfeng Liu,Xingang Liu,Chuhong Zhang

Flexible piezoelectric energy harvesters (PEHs) have gained substantial attention owing to their wearability, breathability, and sustainable self-powered supply. However, existing film PEHs cannot identify forces in different bending directions, limiting their applications in wearable electronics and artificial intelligence. This study constructs a fabric PEH for the first time by introducing piezoelectric anisotropic BaTi 2 O 5 nanorods (BT2-nr) into piezoelectric polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofibers with a bi-oriented architecture, in which BT2-nr uniformly aligns in the PVDF nanofiber during electrospinning. The dual-orientation feature endows the flexible PEH with anisotropy, which can sensitively identify the forces at different bending directions (e.g., bent vertically, parallelly, or twisted by 45° along the fiber orientations). Simultaneously, the composite PVDF/BT2 PEH containing 15 wt.% BT2-nr delivers an optimal piezoelectric output of 31.2 V with a high sensitivity of 5.22 V N −1 . The developed anisotropic PEH can be used as a self-powered pressure sensor for multimodal intelligent biomonitoring of human movement. This study provides a feasible strategy for fabricating self-powered flexible PEHs with high electromechanical conversion efficiency and multifunctionality for wearable piezoelectric pressure sensors.
