Facile construction of 0D/2D In2O3/Bi2WO6 Z-scheme heterojunction with enhanced photocatalytic activity for antibiotics removal

Qishe Yan,Zhiyuan Guo,Peiying Wang,Yanan Cheng,Chenyu Wu,Huiru Zuo

Proper interfacial contact and efficient interfacial charge transfer play a predominant role in improving the photocatalytic performance. In this work, the 0D/2D In 2 O 3 /Bi 2 WO 6 Z-scheme heterojunction was constructed successfully. The In 2 O 3 nanoparticles were immobilized on the surface of the Bi 2 WO 6 nanosheets via a facile hydrothermal-calcination method. The crystal structure and photoelectrochemical properties of samples were further characterized. 15% In 2 O 3 /Bi 2 WO 6 (IB-15) exhibited optimal photocatalytic properties in degradation of tetracycline (TC) and oxytetracycline (OTC) under visible-light irradiation, and the possible degradation pathways of TC were acknowledged derived from LC-MS. According to the results of radical trapping experiments, superoxide radicals (•O 2 - ) and photogenerated holes (h + ) were predominant active species for TC degradation and a possible photocatalytic mechanism was proposed. The significant improvement of photocatalytic property was attributed to the unique Z-scheme heterojunction with 0D/2D architecture which facilitates the rapid separation of photo-excited carriers and expands the range of absorption spectrum .

Attapulgite-interpenetrated g-C3N4/Bi2WO6 quantum-dots Z-scheme heterojunction for 2-mercaptobenzothiazole degradation with mechanism insight

Yingshan Zeng,Qiao Yin,Zhi Liu,Hao Dong

The rational utilization of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) and quantum dots (QDs) semiconductors to highlight their merits as efficient photocatalysts remains attractive and challenging. Targeted integration of g-C 3 N 4 and QDs with expanded interfacial contact and multi-channel electron transfer is an effective means to boost the transfer efficiency of photogenerated electrons and achieve prominent photocatalytic activity. In this article, novel attapulgite (ATP)-interpenetrated Bi 2 WO 6 QDs/g-C 3 N 4 nanocomposites (BWQ/g-C 3 N 4 /ATP, designated as BCAs) are successfully fabricated through a simple and effective in situ hydrothermal growth method. The nanorod-structured ATP acts as numerous bridges to intercalate into the interlayers and expands inner space of g-C 3 N 4 . Theoretical calculation results indicate that an interfacial internal electric field (IEF) is formed where electrons transfer from g-C 3 N 4 to Bi 2 WO 6 . Originating from the intact interfacial contact of the expanded g-C 3 N 4 and highly dispersed BWQ with reinforcing electronic transferability of ATP, the optimal sample of BCA5 with higher specific surface area, more active sites and electron transfer channels, and stronger light harvestability, exhibits a nearly-100% degradation of organic contaminant of 2-Mercaptobenzothiazole in water, 35-, 17- and 3-fold rate constant higher than that the pristine g-C 3 N 4 , BWQ and Bi 2 WO 6 /g-C 3 N 4 counterparts, respectively. Various characterization techniques are employed to put forward the mechanisms in depth on MBT degradation route and IEF-induced photocatalytic Z-scheme over the BCA5 under photoexcitation.

Construction of S-scheme heterojunction by doping Bi2WO6 into Bi2O3 for efficiently enhanced visible-light photocatalytic performance

Hu Wenna,Wu Fan,Liu Wei

The objective of this study was to construct the S-scheme Bi 2 WO 6 / α- Bi 2 O 3 heterojunctions with high enhanced visible-light photocatalytic performance. The composites loaded various Bi 2 WO 6 mass ratios were prepared by a ball grinding method. The characterization and reaction mechanism of photocatalysts were explored in detail. Remarkably, the results demonstrated that the Bi 2 WO 6 / α- Bi 2 O 3 presented an outstandingly superior performance for photodegradation of nitrobenzene. Among them, the 10%Bi 2 WO 6 / α- Bi 2 O 3 possessed the best photocatalytic property, and it could reach up to 95.7% in 50 min with the top rate constant of 0.06178 min −1 , which was 4.3 and 3.6 times that of bare Bi 2 O 3 and Bi 2 WO 6 , respectively. Simultaneously, the Bi 2 WO 6 / α- Bi 2 O 3 was well stable after five cycling experiments. The efficiently improved photocatalytic performance was primarily attributed to the formation of S-scheme structure between Bi 2 WO 6 and α- Bi 2 O 3 , which enhanced the conspicuous separating efficiency of photogenerated carriers. The present study not only offers a method to solve the unsatisfactory activity of Bi 2 O 3 , but also provides some insights into the design of other novel S-scheme composites with great potential application in clean energy and environmental remediation. Graphical abstract The efficiently improved photocatalytic performance was primarily attributed to the formation of S-scheme structure between Bi 2 WO 6 and α- Bi 2 O 3 , which enhanced the conspicuous separating efficiency of photogenerated carriers.

Preparation of a novel p-n BiOI/ Bi2WO6 photocatalyst and its application in the treatment of tetracycline

Lu Yanjun,Sun Yajing,Li Jing,Xu Yuan,Han Qing,Wei Lixin,Sun Junqi,Guo Jifeng

The development of advanced photocatalysts is crucial for efficient photocatalytic degradation of the antibiotic tetracycline (TC). In this article, a series of BiOI/Bi 2 WO 6 (I/W) with different ratios (9:1, 7:3, 5:5, 3:7, 1:9) were synthesized by hydrothermal method and solvothermal method with BiOI as the primary material. XRD, SEM, FT-IR, XPS, and other analyses showed that the two monomers BiOI and Bi 2 WO 6 were well combined together. The degradation experiment was considered that the 7:3I/W photocatalytic composite has the best degradation effect on TC, which can degrade 84.81% of TC within 120 min. At the same time, the 7:3I/W composite has good stability after five cycles. In the 7:3I/W composite, BiOI and Bi 2 WO 6 were successfully recombined, and a p-n type heterojunction system was formed. This p-n type result not only greatly promoted the separation between e − and h + , but also significantly improved its photocatalytic performances. This paper provided a novel photocatalytic material for treating TC in water, and also created theoretical support for the composite of bismuth-based photocatalytic materials.

Study on high antibacterial RGO/Bi2WO6 microspheres combined with PEVE coating for marine sterilization under visible light

Song Yupeng,Zhou Feng,Chai Yongheng,Zhan Su

Marine pollution has become ever more serious, and photocatalysts have potential prospects in the application of marine anti-pollution. The RGO/Bi 2 WO 6 composite with the microsphere structure was synthesized by the hydrothermal method. The results showed that the sterilization rate of 2% RGO/Bi 2 WO 6 coating increased to more than 93% under visible light. The high performance was attributed to the improvement of the charge separation efficiency and the enhancement of the utilization rate of light. The formation mechanism of microspheres was discussed. Radical capture experiments proved that hydroxyl radical was the major active substance. Photocurrent and EIS experiments indicated that 2%RGO/Bi 2 WO 6 had excellent carrier separation efficiency.

Enhanced photocatalytic CO2 reduction in H2O vapor by atomically thin Bi2WO6 nanosheets with hydrophobic and nonpolar surface

Yunpeng Liu,Dongyan Shen,Qiao Zhang,Yuan Lin,Feng Peng

The artificial carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) photoreduction into useful chemicals utilizing solar energy demands the stable photocatalysts with high-efficiency charge separation and effective CO 2 adsorption capacity. For all this, for the first time, Bi 2 WO 6 photocatalysts with atomically thin structure along with hydrophobic and nonpolar surface are successfully designed and prepared using CTAB as assistant. The ultrathin feature with short diffusion distance significantly facilitates the charge separation. The hydrophobic surface, modified by nonpolar long carbon chains of CTA + , boosts both the mass-transfer and adsorption of CO 2 , meanwhile suppressing the H 2 O adsorption. Hence, the prepared photocatalyst exhibits a high-efficiency photocatalytic conversion of CO 2 in H 2 O vapor without co-catalyst due to high CO 2 concentration and sufficient photogenerated carriers. The photocatalytic mechanisms including adsorption concentration and activation process of CO 2 are further revealed by the in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared fourier transform spectra (DRIFTS). As a new feature, linearly adsorbed CO at 2035 cm −1 is found on hydrophobic surface of Bi 2 WO 6 , and the absorbance of CO is critical to the next reaction step for CH 4 generation. This innovation provides a facile avenue for the design of photocatalysts with remarkable CO 2 capture ability to achieve the practical application of photocatalytic CO 2 reduction.

Facile Fabrication of Z-Scheme Bi2WO6/WO3 Composites for Efficient Photodegradation of Bisphenol A with Peroxymonosulfate Activation

Yongkui Huang,Shuangwu Kou,Xiaoting Zhang,Lei Wang,Peili Lu,Daijun Zhang

The rational fabrication of direct Z-scheme heterostructures photocatalysts is a pivotal strategy to boost the interfacial charge migration and separation. Herein, direct Z-scheme Bi2WO6/WO3composites were rationally fabricated for the degradation of bisphenol A combined with the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The tight interface contact between Bi2WO6and WO3was successfully formed by the in situ epitaxial growth of ultrathin Bi2WO6nanosheets at the surface of WO3nanorods. The Bi2WO6/WO3composite presented highly efficient catalytic performance toward degradation of BPA with PMS activation as compared to the WO3and Bi2WO6. PMS can dramatically boost the photocatalytic activity of the composites. Moreover, the results of active radical scavenging experiments revealed thath+, •O2−, and •SO4−are critical active species in the photodegradation reaction. Finally, the photocatalytic mechanism for the degradation of BPA is also discussed in detail. The great improvement of photocatalytic performance should be ascribed to the effective formation of the direct Z-scheme heterojunctions between Bi2WO6and WO3, resulting in improved light absorption, an efficient transfer and separation of photoinduced charge carriers, and a considerable amount of the electrons and holes with strong reduction and oxidation abilities. The study might provide new inspirations to design and construct heterostructured nanomaterials with outstanding photoactivity for environmental remediation. Keywords:bisphenol A;peroxymonosulfate;photocatalysis;composites;Z-scheme

The fabrication of a biomass carbon quantum dot-Bi2WO6 hybrid photocatalyst with high performance for antibiotic degradation

Xu Tang,Yang Yu,Changchang Ma,Guosheng Zhou,Xinlin Liu,Minshan Song,Ziyang Lu,Lei Liu

A novel biomass carbon quantum dots@Bi2WO6 (BC-QDs@Bi2WO6) photocatalyst with uniform dispersivity was prepared via a dialysis-assisted hydrothermal process. Multiple techniques including HR-TEM, XPS, UV-Vis, PL, photocurrent analysis, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were employed to investigate the morphology and structures as well as the optical and electronic properties of the as-prepared samples. The photocatalytic activity of BC-QDs@Bi2WO6 was assessed by the degradation of antibiotics (tetracycline, ciprofloxacin, and gatifloxacin). The improved photocatalytic activity was attributed to the quantum effect of BC-QDs, which acted as the light harvesting center, electron reservoir, and reaction center for degrading the pollutants. Furthermore, a plausible mechanism for photocatalysis was put forward according to the ESR and quenching experiments. The present work can have significant advantages in the construction of biomass carbon-based photocatalysts in pollutant degradation and improved light utilization.

One-step hydrothermal treatment to fabricate Bi2WO6-reduced graphene oxide nanocomposites for enhanced visible light photoelectrochemical performance

Saibo Chen,Hao Nan,Xuan Zhang,Yuting Yan,Zhou Zhou,Ying Zhang,Kun Wang

Considering that ultraviolet light may cause the denaturation of biomaterials, searching for and engineering innovative and advanced nanomaterials with excellent photoelectrochemical properties under visible light illumination are of great significance in the fundamental understanding and application of photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensors. As a widely applied visible light response material, the applications of Bi2WO6 in PEC fields were restricted because of the rapid recombination of photoinduced electron–hole pairs. In this work, Bi2WO6 functionalized reduced oxide (Bi2WO6–rGO) nanocomposites (NCs) were prepared by a one-step solvothermal method. After optimizing the content of rGO, the Bi2WO6–rGO2.94% NCs displayed enhanced photocurrent intensity (the starting mass ratios of GO to Bi2WO6 = 0.0294), which was nearly 2.7-fold compared to that of pure Bi2WO6 nanoparticles because of the separation of the photoinduced carriers and the enhancement of visible light absorption. Based on the coupling of Pb2+-induced allosteric transition of G-quadruplex DNAzyme and the enzymatic biocatalytic precipitation (BCP), Bi2WO6–rGO2.94% NCs were applied in the construction of a novel PEC sensor for the determination of Pb2+. The as-fabricated PEC sensor exhibited good anti-interference ability and a good linear relationship was obtained between the photocurrent intensity and the logarithm of the Pb2+ concentration over a concentration range from 0.01 to 50 μM and with a detection limit of 3.3 nM (S/N = 3), indicating that Bi2WO6–rGO NCs would be promising materials for PEC sensing.

Fabrication of TiO2–Bi2WO6 Binanosheet for Enhanced Solar Photocatalytic Disinfection of E. coli: Insights on the Mechanism

Yanan Jia,Sihui Zhan,Shuanglong Ma,Qixing Zhou

TiO2–Bi2WO6 binanosheet (TBWO), synthesized by a facile two-step hydrothermal method, was used as an effective visible-light-driven photocatalyst for the inactivation of E. coli and was characterized by TEM, SEM, XRD, FTIR, XPS, and BET. A series of TBWOs with different doping ratios of TiO2 loading from 10 to 55 wt % were synthesized. Among all of the TBWOs, 40% TBWO exhibited the best bacteria disinfection efficiency, and the quantity of viable bacteria could reach 10° with 40% TBWO (100 μg/mL) after being illuminated for 4 h. Furthermore, the confocal fluorescent-based cell live/dead test and the SEM technology were applied to verify the photocatalytically lethal effect toward E. coli and the rupture of bacterial membranes. The leak of bacterial contents, including the bacterial genome represented by relevant 16srDNA, and total protein were detected by PCR and bicinchoninic acid assay. In this work, the antibacterial mechanism was studied by employing photoelectrochemical techniques, electron spin resonance (ESR), and scavengers of different reactive species, revealing the pivotal roles of electron hole (h+) and electron (e–) in the photocatalytic process. In addition, the •O2– and •OH radicals were also detected in the TBWOs system by ESR. It was found that the adsorption of visible light and separation of photogenerated carriers within TiO2 have been largely promoted after being coupled with Bi2WO6, which should be responsible for the improved bactericidal effect.

Photodegradation of organic dyes by Bi2WO6 coated cotton fabric modified with poly(diallyldimethylammoniumchloride) under visible light irradiation

Du Zoufei,Guo Ronghui,Lan Jianwu,Tan Lin,Jiang Shouxiang,Cheng Cheng,Zhao Ludan

In this study, a visible-light-driven photocatalyst Bi 2 WO 6 was assembled on fibers by linking of poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) at room temperature. The samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Photocatalytic activity was evaluated by degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) and Acid orange 7 (AO7) under visible light irradiation. Effects of concentration of PDDA in the pretreatment solution on degradation efficiency of RhB and AO7 in the presence of Bi 2 WO 6 coated cotton fabrics were investigated. In addition, washing durability and breaking strength of Bi 2 WO 6 coated cotton fabrics modified with PDDA were examined. The results revealed that Bi 2 WO 6 with irregular shape were successfully coated on the cotton fabric modified with PDDA. Bi 2 WO 6 coated cotton fabric modified with PDDA exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity with degradation efficiency of 97.4% of RhB and 94.5% of AO7, respectively. In addition, Bi 2 WO 6 coating on the cotton fabrics modified with PDDA not only improved washing durability but also enhanced breaking strength of the fabric.

CTAB-Assisted Fabrication of Bi2WO6 Thin Nanoplates with High Adsorption and Enhanced Visible Light-Driven Photocatalytic Performance

Yuxue Zhou,Pengfei Lv,Xiangdong Meng,Yanping Tang,Pingping Huang,Xiaobing Chen,Xiaoshuang Shen,Xianghua Zeng

Two-dimensional thin Bi2WO6nanoplates have been fabricated using a cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)-assisted hydrothermal method. We investigated the proposed formation mechanism based on the crystalline structures of the thin Bi2WO6nanoplates. The high adsorption ability and excellent visible-light driven photocatalytic activities of the Bi2WO6nanoplates were illustrated, in view of exposed (001) facets of nanoplates possessing faster separation of photo-generated charge carriers and increased catalytically active sites. Such a cost-effective way to obtain Bi2WO6nanoplates offers new possibilities for the design of adsorptive semiconductor photocatalysts with strengthened photocatalytic activities.Keywords:Bi2WO6nanoplates;semiconductor photocatalyst;visible light-driven
