A biomass-based carbon fiber/metal–organic frameworks (MOFs/CF) electrode, with excellent electro-catalytic activity, was used for design the electro-Fenton (EF) process. The carbon fiber membrane (CF) was prepared from regenerated cotton fiber membrane through carbonization, and the MOFs were successfully introduced on the surface of the CF by the solvothermal method to obtain MOFs/CF electrode. Through the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), the continuous on-site generation of H 2 O 2 was achieved over the MOFs/CF electrode. Moreover, the MOFs could efficiently catalyse H 2 O 2 to form hydroxyl radicals (•OH), which can degrade organic pollutants in the EF process. Excellent electrocatalytic performance was exhibited when the electrode was applied to degrade tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA). The total organic carbon removal efficiency for TBBPA reached 80% in 240 min, which demonstrated TBBPA was also rapidly mineralized by the constructed EF system.

The weak interfacial bonding between carbon fiber (CF) and polyetheretherketone (PEEK) has constrained the mechanical performance and multifunctional potential of the CF reinforced PEEK composites. To overcome this challenge, an environmentally sustainable surface modification strategy for CF was developed, leveraging the synergy of cross-dimensional nanomaterials. Unlike conventional approaches where conductive carbon black (CB) is dispersed in resin matrices, this work pioneers the use of surface-charge-modified CB for direct fiber interfacial enhancement. Using the electrostatic self-assembly method, two-dimensional negatively charged MXene nanosheets and zero-dimensional positively charged conductive CB particles were precisely anchored onto the CF surface through electrostatic interactions. The innovative synergy of the cross-dimensional dual nanomaterials simultaneously enhanced the mechanical and electromagnetic shielding properties of the CF/PEEK composites. Compared with the unmodified CF/PEEK composite, the maximum improvements in flexural strength, flexural modulus, and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of the composite after modification were 73.4 %, 47.72 %, and 60.27 %, respectively. This is achieved through the synergistic effects of mechanical interlocking, electrostatic interactions, van der Waals forces, along with hydrogen bonds. Meanwhile, the optimal electromagnetic shielding performance of the modified composite reached 31.04 dB at the X-band, representing an increase of 33.56 %, which can mainly be ascribed to the uniform distribution of nanomaterials that enhance the conduction loss and multiple reflections. This scalable and eco-friendly pathway holds considerable application potential for constructing integrated structural-functional CF/PEEK composites.

Improving the ablation and mechanical properties of ablative thermal protection composites by introducing modified fillers which simultaneously with an unavoidable increase in density. Balancing this increase in density while achieving lightweight properties is crucial for the development of effective ablative composites. In this paper, different contents of the hollow silicate glass microspheres (HSMs) are incorporated into MoSi 2 /mica-modified CF-BPR composites to investigate the impact of HSMs. The results show that HSMs play a positive role in reducing the density and thermal conductivity of the composite. The ablation and insulation properties of the 30 vol.% HSMs composites exhibit a mass ablation rate of 0.035 g/s and a linear ablation rate of 0.015 mm/s, alongside the lowest backside temperature. A significant improvement in flexural strength after static ablation at 1500 °C reached 82.59 MPa and maintained a relatively high level after 1600 °C. HSMs act as interlaminar skeletons, enhancing the shearing strength of the composite and facilitating the formation of a protective liquid phase around the carbon fibers to prevent oxidation. The increasing toughness of carbon fibers further enhances the mechanical strength of the composites.

The escalating demand for multifunctionality in carbon fiber reinforced poly(ether ether ketone) (CF/PEEK) composites has intensified the need for next-generation structural materials. However, achieving a synergistic integration of functional performance and structural integrity—rather than a trade-off—remains a critical challenge. Herein, tetrapod-shaped ZnO whiskers decorated with 2D Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets (T-ZnO@MXene) were fabricated via electrostatic self-assembly and incorporated into CF/PEEK composites. This 3D conductive/enhanced network enabled the simultaneous enhancement of mechanical properties, electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, and electrothermal deicing capabilities. The optimized CF/T-ZnO@MXene/PEEK composites exhibited a flexural strength of 1970.0 MPa, a flexural modulus of 142.3 GPa, and an interlaminar shear strength of 123.2 MPa, representing improvements of 33.4 %, 45.1 %, and 56.7 % over pristine CF/PEEK, respectively. Concurrently, the through-thickness electrical conductivity surged for 7.7 S/m, corresponding to a 76-fold enhancement, while the EMI shielding effectiveness attained 56.7 dB (a 40.7 % increase). In addition, the composites demonstrated efficient electrothermal conversion and reliable deicing performance. Overall, this work provides an effective route to harmonize structural robustness with multifunctional capabilities in CF/PEEK composites, opening new opportunities for advanced aerospace applications.

A “grape cluster”-like multiscale hybrid structure (CNT@ZIF-8) was successfully constructed by in-situ growth of ZIF-8 nanoparticles on CNT surfaces. • Molecular dynamics simulations revealed the interaction mechanism between CNT-COOH and ZIF-8 at the molecular level. • The CNT@ZIF-8 hybrids were uniformly anchored onto electrospun fibers via a combined electrospinning–electrospray process to achieve multiscale reinforcement. • G IC ,ini and G IC ,prop increased by 59% and 50% respectively, G IIC rose by 192%; and in-plane properties were significantly improved. In fiber-reinforced high-performance thermoplastic composites, the surface inertness of carbon nanotubes (CNT) limits interfacial bonding with the polymer matrix, significantly reducing their reinforcing and toughening efficiency. To address this, we propose a surface modification strategy for high-temperature processing: in-situ growth of ZIF-8 nanoparticles on CNT surfaces to construct a “grape-like” multiscale hybrid (CNT@ZIF-8). Using combined electrospinning–electrospray, CNT@ZIF-8 is uniformly loaded onto electrospun fibers, and the resulting mats are introduced into the interlaminar region of CF/PPESK composites, achieving synergistic strength and toughness enhancement. Compared to the unmodified composite, Mode I interlaminar fracture toughness (initiation and propagation) increases by 59% and 50%, respectively; Mode II toughness improves by 192%; flexural strength and interlaminar shear strength increase by 36% and 27%, respectively. The enhanced performance is attributed to two factors: (1) CNT@ZIF-8 anchoring on electrospun fibers improves fiber–matrix interfacial bonding; (2) the nanoscale rough structure of ZIF-8 on CNT enhances mechanical interlocking with the resin matrix. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal strong hydrogen bonding between CNT and the ZIF-8 precursor (2-methylimidazole). During loading, the “grape-like” hierarchical structure suppresses CNT debonding and sliding, promoting energy dissipation via enhanced interfacial friction and multi-path crack propagation, thereby greatly increasing energy absorption during fiber pull-out. This work provides a new strategy and theoretical basis for surface modification of CNT in high-temperature resistant thermoplastic matrices.

Achieving simple and efficient interfacial modification between carbon fiber and polyether ether ketone (PEEK) has been the pursuit of researchers. In this study, by comparing the nucleophilicity of various aromatic amines, a direct Schiff base reaction with polyether ether ketone (PEEK) has been achieved. Based on this, a “grafting-bridging” bifunctional diazonium salt containing a phenylethylamine structure was designed and synthesized to enhance the interfacial strength through covalent bonding without the use of sizing agents. The diazonium salt was grafted onto the surface of carbon fiber through electrochemical reduction, while the PEEK resin and phenylethylamine could achieve bridging through heat treatment, thus a PEEK/CF interface with enhanced covalent bonds was constructed. The reaction and conversion rate between phenylethylamine and PEEK resin were confirmed through IR and NMR. The successful grafting of the diazonium salt on the carbon fiber was determined through XPS and cyclic voltammetry. The bridging reaction on the surface of carbon fiber was verified through XPS and the use of 6F-PEEK with characteristic elements. As a result, the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of the modified PEEK/CF interface reached 86.2 MPa, representing a 102.8 % improvement compared to the untreated interface of 42.5 MPa, fully demonstrating the excellent effect of the bifunctional diazonium salt.

C/C–ZrB 2 –ZrC–SiC composites were fabricated by polymer infiltration and pyrolysis (PIP) with a preform of C f /ZrB 2 . The ZrB 2 powders were sprayed onto fabric layer by layer before the fabric is needled. After introduction of resin carbon and ZrC–SiC into the preform, a ceramic coating on the matrix and fibres was formed in the composites. The plasma ablation test indicates that the composites possess a good ablation resistance after ablation for 180 s and 240 s. The SiO 2 –ZrO 2 barrier layer, high temperature Zr–Si–O glass layer and heat dissipation all contribute to the good ablation resistance of the composites.

An effective and easily-handled strategy for enhancing the interfacial adhesion of CF/PEEK-titanium hybrid laminates was proposed, which was achieved by introducing micro-nano layers with multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) networks between titanium and PEEK layers via electrophoretic deposition . The optimal deposition condition was explored by setting different concentrations of MWCNTs and times of deposition. Short beam shear tests were conducted at room temperature to characterize the interlaminar shear strength of the hybrid laminates. The results showed that the optimum parameters of deposition were 0.75 mg/mL of MWCNTs concentration and 90 s of deposition time , leading to a 47.8% increase of interlaminar shear strength compared with the sandblasted-only case. The mechanisms for enhancement were explained by micromorphology, apparent contact angle , and roughness analyses, which could be utilized to guide the preparation of CF/PEEK-Ti hybrid laminates with interfacial reinforcement by MWCNTs. Besides, multiple failure modes occurred at the metal-composites interface including a mixed mode of interfacial and cohesive failures , and a large amount of PEEK and carbon fibers remaining on the surface of titanium sheet proved the excellent interlaminar properties of the hybrid laminates.

Fiber metal laminates (FMLs) provide a reliable approach for achieving lightweight in high-speed aerospace vehicles. However, the weak interfacial properties between metals and composites could significantly affect the deformation and failure modes of FMLs. In this paper, the low-velocity impact responses and damage mechanisms of CF/PEEK-Ti hybrid laminates with nano-interfacial enhancement by multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were characterized and analyzed. The post-impact residual tensile strengths (RTS) were investigated experimentally using quasi-static uniaxial tests combined with digital image correlation , and were evaluated theoretically by developing an analytical prediction model that considers the internal thermal stress and dent geometry. Results show that the initial delamination thresholds of force and displacement during impact can be effectively increased via interfacial enhancement of CNT network. By using a 5% decrease in RTS retention rate as a criterion for damage tolerance, a significant strength decrease starts to appear at 3 J for the sandblasted-only laminates, which is improved to 10 J for the laminates with nano-interfacial enhancement. The proposed unified constitutive model can yield an acceptable prediction for RTS and failure strain of the hybrid laminate after impact, providing a guidance for the structural design and engineering applications of FMLs.

On account of environment concerns and the gradually depletion of fossil resources , a hyperbranched waterborne polyurethane (HWPU) serving for sizing agent of carbon fibers (CF) was designed based on bio-based materials. Hyperbranched chain extender named CAG was synthesized by citric acid (CA) and glycerol as HWPU precursor. Tartaric acid (TA) was coordinated with nano titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) through two –COOH groups, which was introduced to HWPU as the chain extender, leading to a significant improvement in ultraviolet (UV)-resistant of the sizing agent. The interfacial performance promotion of CF reinforced nylon 6 (CF/PA6) composites contributed by the HWPU sizing agent were systematically investigated. In contrast to the untreated CF composites , the mechanical performance arrived the best improvement after sizing by concentration of 1.5 wt%, which exhibited a dramatic promote of 44.9% in interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), 58.7% in interfacial shear strength (IFSS) and 43.3% in flexural strength . Extraordinary, the treated CF composites remained over 98% of mechanical performance after a week of unremitting ultraviolet irradiation, signifying the outstanding UV-resistance of the TiO 2 modified HWPU sizing agent.

Hierarchical structural design has been verified as a feasible strategy to fabricate effective electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbers, so we designed hierarchical core–sheath composites with magnetic particles and dielectric layers. In this work, a hierarchical structure of carbon fiber (CF)@Fe3O4@MoS2 (CPDF7-M) was prepared by introducing Fe3O4 and depositing MoS2 layers on the surface of fibers. Due to the synergistic effects from the CF@Fe3O4 increasing the conductive and magnetic loss and the outer MoS2 layers improving the impedance matching, the optimal reflection loss (RL) value was −63.1 dB at 2.7 mm and the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) was 9.1 GHz covering the X and Ku band. Moreover, the EAB values were adjusted with a specific MoS2 loading at different thicknesses, which provided the necessary reference for the construction of efficient and flexible absorbers in the EMW absorption fields.

An electro-Fenton-like process was extensively applied to eliminate ciprofloxacin antibiotics pollution in water systems. Here, we developed ordered meso-NiMn2O4 nanoparticles as an efficient electro-Fenton-like catalyst to modify a CF cathode for the degradation and mineralization of ciprofloxacin (CIP). It was found that the carbon felt (CF) cathode modified by the meso-NiMn2O4 catalyst could improve the generation of H2O2, which thereby demonstrated the excellent catalytic property and electrochemical performance. Significantly, the mesoporous architecture of this Fenton-like catalyst provided more activated sites and interconnected channels that could accelerate electron transfer and facilitate the generation of activated radicals (˙OH and ˙O2−). It is worth mentioning that the bifunctional meso-NiMn2O4 catalyst could provide two redox couples (Mn4+/Mn3+ and Ni3+/Ni2+) to enhance the electro-Fenton-like reaction for increasing the generation rate of active radicals. The degradation efficiency of CIP finally reached 100% within 1.5 h by using the meso-NiMn2O4 catalyst, which was better than that of other as-prepared Fenton-like catalysts, such as bulk-NiMn2O4, meso-MnO2, and meso-NiO. Simultaneously, TOC removal of CIP for the meso-NiMn2O4 catalyst was twice than that of bulk-NiMn2O4 catalyst. Finally, a possible heterogeneous electro-Fenton-like reaction mechanism for the efficient destruction of CIP was proposed by using the ordered meso-NiMn2O4 catalyst.
