MOF-on-MOF-derived GC/Co@CNTs with multiscale heterostructures for enhanced microwave absorption

Haiyang Peng,Ying Zhang,Tao Ma,Yixing Huang,Xiao Kang,Ying Li

A 2D/1D/0D carbon-magnetic heterostructure was constructed after pyrolysis. • GC/Co@CNTs-800 delivered an EAB of 6.04 GHz at 2.00 mm. • Multiscale heterointerfaces enhanced electromagnetic attenuation. Metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived electromagnetic wave absorbing materials have attracted considerable interest because of their tunable composition, rich porosity, and structural versatility. However, conventional single-MOF-derived materials often have limited metallic components and structures with a single dimensionality, which hinder the simultaneous optimization of electromagnetic wave absorption performance. In this work, a ZIF-L@ZIF-67 precursor with a MOF-on-MOF architecture was designed. Through high-temperature pyrolysis, it was converted into graphitized carbon/Co nanoparticles@carbon nanotubes (GC/Co@CNTs) composites composed of two-dimensional graphitized carbon, one-dimensional carbon nanotubes, and zero-dimensional Co nanoparticles. By tuning the pyrolysis temperature, the magnetodielectric response response of the materials was effectively regulated. The optimized GC/Co@CNTs-800 exhibited a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −69.4 dB at 1.85 mm and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 6.04 GHz at 2.00 mm. During pyrolysis, the in-situ formation of a conductive carbon network, magnetic Co nanoparticles, and abundant heterogeneous interfaces synergistically promoted conduction loss, magnetic loss, and interfacial polarization. As a result, the electromagnetic attenuation capability of the composites was significantly improved. This study highlights the considerable promise of MOF-on-MOF-derived architectures for electromagnetic wave absorption and offers a viable structural engineering strategy for the development of next-generation microwave absorbers. Constructing structure-function integrated ZrO2-SiO2 ceramic nanocomposites through incorporation of CNTs and Ti3AlC2

Wenjun Yu,Zihua Lei,Wenqian Pan,Yang Li,Songlin Ran,Le Fu

In this study, we sought to develop structure-function integrated ZrO 2 -SiO 2 ceramic nanocomposites by simultaneously incorporating one-dimensional (1D) carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and three-dimensional (3D) Ti 3 AlC 2 MAX phase. The CNTs and Ti 3 AlC 2 were introduced into the ZrO 2 -SiO 2 precursor powder via a straightforward wet ball milling process. CNTs maintained excellent structural stability during sintering, whereas the Ti 3 AlC 2 decomposed into Al and TiC. The flexural strength of the nanocomposite was enhanced by 34 % attributed to the pull-out strengthening effect of the CNTs. The uniformly distributed 1D CNTs and the in-situ formed 3D TiC particles created an interconnected network within the ceramic matrix, thereby providing efficient pathways for electron transport. Consequently, the electrical conductivity and electromagnetic wave absorption properties of the nanocomposites were markedly improved. This study demonstrates an effective approach to developing structure-function integrated ceramic composites by exploiting the dimensional differences and synergistic interactions between the filler phases.

An improvement strategy for titanium-based anodes: RGO-CNTs and TNTs as performance enhancers

Minghang Gong,Yihang Cai,Dongwei Wang,Lei Wu,Yong Wang,Gongwang Cao,Yuwei Liu,Quanzhong Guo,Chuan Wang,Yang Li

During marine navigation, ships inevitably encounter corrosion and biofouling from seawater, necessitating anodes with superior performance for impressed current cathodic protection of hulls. In this study, a hybrid material comprising reduced graphene oxide (RGO) and carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs), along with a TiO 2 nanotube arrays (TNTs) interlayer, was introduced into a metal oxide-coated electrode. The RGO-CNTs/RuO 2 –IrO 2 –SnO 2 /TNTs electrode was fabricated via thermal decomposition, and its surface morphology, electrocatalytic activity, practical chlorine evolution and antibacterial performance, as well as accelerated life, were systematically evaluated. The underlying mechanisms by which the hybrid material and interlayer enhance anode performance were analyzed. The results indicate that the electrode achieves a difference of 0.430 V between chlorine evolution potential (CEP) and oxygen evolution potential (OEP), with an accelerated life of 232 h. It effectively exerts a stimulatory effect on microorganisms, thereby achieving superior biofouling resistance. This enhancement is likely attributable to the synergistic effects of RGO-CNTs and TNTs, including barrier effects, labyrinth effect, mechanical reinforcement, and optimized electron transport, which collectively improve the electrocatalytic activity and stability of the anode. This study provides valuable theoretical insights for enhancing the activity and stability of coated electrodes, holding significant promise for applications in marine corrosion protection.

Biomimetic Superhydrophobic Construction of a PTFE-HFM Surface with CNTs for Waste Oil Purification

Yunlong Dai,Kaikai Chen,Haibo Yan,Zhengjie Yue,Shuang Zhang,Jingjing Yan,Changfa Xiao

The complex composition of industrial waste oil poses a severe challenge to efficient separation and recycling, urgently necessitating the development of membrane materials that combine high separation efficiency, excellent high-temperature stability, and antifouling performance. In this paper, a carbon nanotube (CNT)/polydimethylsiloxane polytetrafluoroethylene hollow fiber membrane (PPHFM) was fabricated via the wet impregnation method. Results indicated that CNTs were uniformly dispersed within the PDMS matrix, synergistically constructing a hierarchically rough surface and endowing the membrane with superhydrophobic and superoleophilic properties. The optimized membrane pore structure conferred molecular sieving ability, achieving a separation efficiency of 94.32% for water-in-oil emulsified oil. Simultaneously, the membrane exhibited excellent permeation flux: the initial flux for kerosene reached 454.96 L–1 m–2 h–1 bar–1, and the flux for waste oil at 150 °C was 47.39 L–1 m–2 h–1 bar–1. The poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) reinforcement layer endowed the membrane with ultrahigh mechanical strength (tensile strength >450 MPa). The optimized CM-2 membrane (CNTs 2 wt %) exhibited outstanding antifouling properties and cycling stability: after 4 consecutive operational cycles, the flux recovery ratio remained at 81.8% in the high-temperature waste oil system; it maintained a high flux even after long-term operation with high-temperature waste oil. This study successfully fabricated a CNT/PPHFM material. This membrane can efficiently treat industrial waste oil and exhibits enhanced durability, demonstrating broad application potential in demanding environments.

Wearable biosensor with high specific surface area PGA-CNTs electrode for sweat glucose detection

Yuting Zheng,Yunfan Zhang,Zifan Xue,Hui Li,Shengnan Shen

Sweat glucose sensors have a high potential to detect blood glucose concentration conveniently and quickly, making them a focus of research on glucose detection methods. We prepare a polyglycolic acid-carbon nanotubes (PGA-CNTs) film with a high specific surface area, loaded with glucose oxidase (GOx) to develop a PGA-CNTs sweat glucose sensor. PGA films with a porous three-dimensional (3D) network structure were prepared by solvent evaporation, CNTs were deposited to obtain PGA-CNTs electrodes, and GOx was adsorbed through the high specific surface area structure of the 3D network. The results confirmed that the mesh structure formed by carbon nanotubes attached to PGA could substantially improve the charge transfer ability, and a considerable amount of GOx could be stably immobilized in the three-dimensional structure of the electrode. The PGA-CNTs sweat glucose sensor has excellent conductivity stability under bending and accurately detects glucose in the presence of other interference. The linear range of glucose response is 20–300 μM, and the sensitivity is 78.45 μA mM −1 cm −2 . Compared to existing products, the PGA-CNTs biosensors are more competitive in detection performance and cost.

Biphasic vanadium-based composite with CNTs as high-performance cathode for zinc ion batteries

Ziwei Gan,Shengbo Yang,Xiaohe Ren,Nengze Wang,Mengxuan Sun,Tianning Pian,Chunyang Jia,Zhijie Li

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) have emerged as a promising energy storage system due to their high safety, low cost, and environmental friendliness. Vanadium-based materials, with their high theoretical capacity, multivalent states, and diverse crystal structures, have become a research hotspot for AZIB cathodes. However, conventional single-phase vanadium-based cathodes suffer from poor electronic conductivity, limited specific capacity, and sluggish kinetics. In this work, a vanadate composite integrated with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and Zn 3 (OH) 2 V 2 O 7 ·2H 2 O/Na 0.33 V 2 O 5 (ZnVO/NaVO/CNTs) is designed to achieve dual optimization of Zn 2+ storage kinetics and structural stability. The layered structure of ZnVO and the tunnel-like structure of NaVO can form more abundant ion transport channels and optimize the transport kinetics of Zn 2+ . The addition of CNTs enhances the electrolyte-electrode wettability and accelerates charge transfer, leading to a nearly doubled maximum zinc-ion diffusion coefficient (D Zn 2+ ) and a 75.2 % reduction in charge transfer resistance (R ct ), thereby effectively reducing polarization. Consequently, the ZnVO/NaVO/CNTs4 composite cathode exhibits good electrochemical performance, delivering a high specific capacity of 130.8 mAh g −1 at 15 A g −1 and stable cycling over 5000 cycles, which is better than the 40.4 mAh g −1 of ZnVO/NaVO. Notably, it maintains nearly undecayed capacity retention of 120.3 mAh g −1 after 14,000 cycles at 5 A g −1 under 0 °C, demonstrating exceptional low-temperature adaptability. When assembled into a pouch battery, it can provide a stable power supply to the phone. This work provides a strategy for developing high-performance, low temperature tolerant AZIBs cathode.

CNTs composite aerogel incorporating phase-change microcapsules for solar-thermal conversion and energy storage

Zhisong Han,Danfeng Du,Fengmei Zhang

Solar energy is an inexhaustible resource. Vigorously developing solar energy can effectively reduce dependence on fossil fuels, thereby improving energy security in countries or regions. However, the application of conventional photothermal materials is limited due to low solar thermal conversion efficiency and the difficulty of preservation. To make use of solar energy, a new phase-change composite material (CNTs-MSA) based on carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-loaded silica aerogel (SA) and microcapsule phase-change materials (MPECMs) was developed by sol-gel and ambient drying. MEPCMs utilize n-octadecane as a phase-change material, which exhibits a enthalpy of 170 J/g and an encapsulation efficiency of 72 %, while also demonstrating stability in retaining their fundamental properties after 200 cycles. Furthermore, the introduction of CNTs not only did not change the lightweight of the aerogel (density is about 0.3 g/cm 3 ), but also greatly improved the compressive strength (the compression stress at 40 % strain reaches 0.9 Mpa). The combination of CNTs and MEPCMs significantly enhanced the solar absorption (14 times than SA) and energy storage capacity (enthalpy of 119 J/g) of the entire composite aerogel material with 75.3 % photothermal conversion efficiency. Such materials will provide a feasible solution to the problem of energy shortage in remote areas, slowing down the over-exploitation of non-renewable energy and promoting environmentally sustainable development.

Boosting HER performance by using plasma prepared N-doped CNTs to support Pt nanoparticles

Kexin Zhao,Jingsen Zhang,Hong Li,Xiuling Zhang,Yue Hua,Lanbo Di

Developing highly-efficient and stable Pt-based catalysts towards alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) offers a promising strategy for future renewable energy. In this work, radio-frequency (RF) cold plasma-prepared N-doped MWCNTs were adopted to support Pt nanoparticles (NPs) (Pt/NCNTs) via pretreating MWCNTs with RF nitrogen plasma and combining with traditional thermal reduction method. The as-synthesized Pt/NCNT featured an ultra-small size of Pt NPs (1.5 nm) and plentiful doped nitrogen, exhibiting ultra-low overpotential of 28 mV@10 mA cm −2 and ultra-high mass activity of 3.2 A mg Pt −1 @100 mA in 1 M KOH solution, which are superior to those of commercial 20 wt% Pt/C catalyst. This is because RF plasma can realize fast, high-efficient and specific N-doping structure of MWCNTs. The lone electron pairs of N species (mainly pyri-N and pyrr-N) on MWCNTs surface transfer to the empty orbitals of Pt NPs, forming a strong coordination effect between Pt and nitrogen, thereby boosting the alkaline HER catalytic performance.

A two-step strategy to graft CNTs onto titanium/CFRP interface for interfacial enhancement

Naiyu Jiang,Yingze Li,Nan Zhou,Hongyan Zhang,Xiaohu Zou,Dongxing Zhang

The primary challenge of fiber metal laminates (FMLs) is the insufficient interfacial adhesion between metal and resin, which impedes the realization of the full potential. To address this issue, a two-step strategy has been proposed: firstly, via the cerium coordination-based approach, followed by grafting carbon nanotubes onto the titanium surface. This modification enhances the interfacial behavior between titanium sheets and polyetheretherketone (PEEK), resulting in increased roughness and wettability on the titanium surface, facilitating tight contact between PEEK and titanium sheets while reducing defects at the interface. Compared to CF/PEEK-sandblasted Ti, the modified CF/PEEK-Ti composites exhibit significantly enhanced interfacial shear strength, equivalent flexural strength, and interlaminate shear strength with an increase of 205.4 % (39.4 MPa), 133.3 % (1434.3 MPa) and 95.2 % (93.7 MPa), respectively. Additionally, the failure mode has shifted from interfacial failure to cohesive failure. The interface enhancement mechanism can be attributed to the synergistic effects of coordination bonding, mechanical interlocking, and multiple interactions. This facile two-step modification method demonstrates the potential to enhance the interfacial properties of CF/PEEK-Ti composites.

A sandwiched SiBCN@CF/CNTs film with electrically conductive network for electromagnetic interference shielding

Xiaohui Xia,Wenxia Zhu,Dong Su,Xiao Yan

High-performance electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials are required for advanced electronic devices and communication systems. Here, a nanocarbon-reinforced-silicon boron carbonitride film (denoted as SiBCN@CF/CNTs) with sandwiched structure was prepared via polyborosilazane (PBSZ) infiltration, lamination and pyrolysis by using carbon nanotubes (CNTs) films as surface layers and carbon foam (CF) as intermediate layer. The SiBCN@CNTs surface layer with high electrical conductivity effectively reflects most of electromagnetic waves, and the SiBCN@CF intermediate layer further increases the absorption of incoming waves via ohmic loss and multiple reflection loss. The construction of the conductive SiBCN@CF layer can effectively enhance the total EMI shielding effectiveness (EMI SE Total ) of the films up to 44.3 dB, much higher than that of 25.8 dB for the sandwiched film with nonconductive intermediate layer. Moreover, increased porosity in the SiBCN@CF layer endows the SiBCN@CF/CNTs film with a high specific EMI SE Total of up to 131.2 dB cm 3 g −1 causes by increased multiple reflection loss. Therefore, it is an ideal route to construct a conductive network and porous structure in sandwiched EMI material for achieving high-efficiency shielding performance.

Nano copper-modified GO and CNTs for enhanced the epoxy resin composite thermal properties

Miao Yuan,Yi Zhang,Fei Xie,Hui Yang,Carla Bittencourt,Rony Snyders,Wenjiang Li

Efficient heat dissipation and reduced interface thermal resistance have become an important factor in the advancement of modern electronics. Herein, high aspect ratio Cu nanowires (Cu NWs) and uniform dispersed copper nanoparticles (Cu NPs) were in-situ grown on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) using an one-pot hydrothermal method to obtain a Cu-rGO-CNTs hybrid (CuGNT).   The CNTs were carboxylated through acid treatment, which enhanced their hydrophilicity. The creation of the well-dispersed Cu NPs and the high aspect ratio Cu NWs was aided by rGO that was transformed from GO throughout the synthesis. The CuGNT hybrid was used as fillers uniformly dispersed in an epoxy resin (EP) matrix, forming an epoxy composite (CuGNT-EP). The filler formed a 3D-interconnected network, which significantly enhanced the thermal conductivity (the thermal conductivity enhancement factor 87.37 %) of the pure epoxy resin even at low filler levels (relative to 2 wt% of EP content) and maintain high tensile strength (33.76 Mpa). Moreover, the filler has excellent thermal stability and oxidation resistance and the filler does not form a complete conductive path, thereby meeting the requirements for antistatic functionality (> 10 9 Ω·m). Therefore, the CuGNT-EP composite shows great potential for semiconductors, IC packaging, and aerospace applications.

Multilayer Ti3C2-CNTs-Au Loaded with Cyclodextrin-MOF for Enhanced Selective Detection of Rutin

Jia Chen,Maoheng Fei,Meijun Ni,Yilin Wang,Zhifang Liu,Yixi Xie,Pengcheng Zhao,Zhiyong Zhang,Junjie Fei

In this work, multi-layer Ti 3 C 2 – carbon nanotubes – gold nanoparticles (Ti 3 C 2 -CNTs-Au) and cyclodextrin metal-organic framework – carbon nanotubes (CD-MOF-CNTs) have been prepared by in situ growth method and used to construct the ultra-sensitive rutin electrochemical sensor for the first time. Among them, the large number of metal active sites of Ti 3 C 2 , the high electron transfer efficiency of CNTS, and the good catalytic properties of AuNPs significantly enhance the electrochemical properties of the composite carbon nanomaterials. Interestingly, CD-MOF has a unique host–guest recognition and a large number of cavities, molecular gaps, and surface reactive groups, which gives the composite outstanding accumulation properties and selectivity for rutin. Under the optimized conditions, the constructed novel sensor has satisfactory detection performance for rutin in the range of 2 × 10 −9 to 8 × 10 −7 M with a limit of detection of 6.5 × 10 −10 M. In addition, the sensor exhibits amazing anti-interference performance against rutin in some flavonoid compounds and can be used to test natural plant samples (buckwheat, Cymbopogon distans , and flos sophorae immaturus). This work has promising applications in the field of environmental and food analysis, and exploring new directions for the application of Mxene-based composites.
