Carbonation degree significantly impacts the volume stability of steel slag powder. To elevate the carbonation efficiency of steel slag and thereby alleviate the volume unsoundness of steel slag powder, sodium tripolyphosphate (STP) was used to enhance the micro morphology of CaCO 3 and accelerate Ca leaching and CO 2 diffusion. Three methods for assessing CO 2 uptake were employed to reliably determine the degree of carbonation. Results indicate that steel slag added with 0.05 wt% STP obtained a promotion exceeded 80 % in CO 2 uptake. Additionally, STP increased the CO 2 capture capacity of steel slag by 24.84 %. Under the influence of STP, the expansion of steel slag paste was reduced by up to 31.45 % following an autoclaving test. The formed micro CaCO 3 particles in carbonated steel slag without STP were polyhedral grains and a dense carbonation layer was formed around calcium silicate. Contrastively, CaCO 3 formed in the carbonated STP incorporated steel slag were conical or acicular particles and consequently generated a porous layer. The porous microstructure provided “tunnels” for the continuous CO 2 diffusion and Ca 2+ leaching and hence maintained relatively higher reaction speed throughout the carbonation process. Furthermore, STP also played the role as a chelator which accelerated the leaching of Ca 2+ .

Mineralization of CO 2 to minerals like calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) has been considered as an effective approach to combat global warming. In this paper, Ca 2+ ions were firstly extracted from waste carbide slag, and then facilely transformed to vaterite CaCO 3 via disperse bubbling carbonization method assisted with an air stone. By optimizing the reaction conditions, highly mono-dispersed vaterite CaCO 3 microspheres (VCMs) were obtained. These microspheres consisted of aggregated CaCO 3 nanocrystals , bearing a mesoporous structure. As a proof-of-concept, these mesoporous microspheres were utilized for dye adsorption and electromagnetic (EM) microwave absorption. For the former, the VCMs were used to adsorb Congo red, yielding a fast adsorption time of 9 min and a high adsorption capacity of 138.77 mg/g. For the latter, EM microwave dielectric parameters were measured, and dye-adsorbed VCMs exhibited better microwave-absorption performance with a minimum reflection loss of −43.2 dB, about 3 times of pristine vaterite. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of solid-waste-derived VCMs as microwave absorbent and dye adsorbent. Considering the low-cost, eco-friendly and facile preparation and effective utilization of VCMs, our work provides a promising strategy for large-scale carbon capture, solid waste utilization, and treatment of microwave and wastewater pollution.

Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is difficult to deliver in food matrices due to its poor solubility. In this work, CaCO3 powders were encapsulated into Solid-in-Oil-in-Water (S/O/W) emulsions to fabricate delivery systems. The impact of the concentrations of propylene glycol alginate and Xanthan gum (PGA-XG) complexes on the physical stability and structural characteristics of S/O/W calcium-lipid emulsions microspheres were studied. The S/O/W calcium-lipid emulsions were characterized by the particle size, zeta potential, physical stability, and apparent viscosity. The S/O/W calcium-lipid emulsion has higher physical stability (including 6-week storage at 4°C), smaller mean particle size (7.60 ± 1.10 μm), and higher negative zeta-potential (45.91 ± 0.97 mV) when the concentration of PGA-XG complexes was 0.8 wt%. Moreover, Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) images confirmed that the CaCO3 powders were encapsulated in the O phase. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that S/O/W calcium-lipid emulsion was spherical. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis further confirmed that CaCO3 was loaded in the S/O/W calcium-lipid emulsion as an amorphous state. The formation mechanism of S/O/W calcium-lipid microspheres was studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Raman spectrum analysis. This study provided new ideas that accelerate the creation of a novel type of calcium preparation with higher quality utilization.

Using yeast as organic template and PDDA/PSS with opposite charge as polyelectrolyte, CaCO 3 was deposited on yeast cells by Layer-by-Layer self-assembly method, and then porous calcium carbonate hybrid microspheres (CaCO 3 -HMPs) were prepared by calcination. The CaCO 3 -HMPs were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, SEM and TG. It was found that the prepared CaCO 3 -HMPs were nearly spherical, with visible pores on the surface, small particle size uniformity (d = 3 μ m) and good dispersion. Doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) was used as the model drug to study drug loading and release properties of CaCO 3 -HMPs. Then, the drug loading, DOX release under different pH conditions, and the degradation of CaCO 3 -HMPs under different pH conditions were investigated. The drug release test results showed that the DOX-loaded microspheres released more drugs (99 %) at pH = 4.8 than pH = 7. It indicated that the CaCO 3 -HMPs were pH sensitive. The cytotoxicity of DOX-loaded microspheres was also studied. It was found that CaCO 3 -HMPs had good biocompatibility. In addition, compared with DOX group, cytotoxicity test results showed that the DOX-loaded microspheres had the same efficacy but sustained drug release for up to 120 h. Therefore, the CaCO 3 -HMP microspheres have good application prospects as anticancer drug carriers.

The ability of calcium-based composites to simultaneously improve optical absorption and accelerate decomposition kinetics represents a major endeavor direction in the direct solar-driven thermochemical energy storage system. Doping strategy has been macroscopically proved to be an effective way in boosting optical absorption properties and calcination kinetics, but the underlying microscopic mechanisms are still unclear. This paper aims to reveal the mechanisms of optical absorption enhancement and accelerated decomposition kinetics for Mn-doped CaCO 3 through both experiments and density function theory (DFT). In the experiment, the optical absorption of Mn-doped CaCO 3 was much higher than that of pure CaCO 3 . The sample CaCO 3 –7Mn displayed satisfied optical absorption and fabulous cycling stability. The optical absorption reached 74% and energy storage density only decreased 2.6% after 20 cycles. Meanwhile, the decomposition reaction rate equations of pure CaCO 3 and Mn-doped CaCO 3 were obtained via non-isothermal kinetic analysis . The results indicated that doping Mn could accelerate decomposition kinetics of CaCO 3 by reducing the apparent activation energy . In the DFT calculation, the complex refractive index of Mn-doped CaCO 3 was lower in real part (refractive index) and higher in imaginary part (extinction coefficient) within the wavelength range from 300 to 2500 nm compared with pure CaCO 3 , which was closely related to the electron cloud distribution in the calcite crystal structure. Moreover, Mn-doped CaCO 3 has lower transition state energy barrier and dissociation energy than pure CaCO 3 . The calculation results revealed the mechanisms of doping Mn in CaCO 3 to enhance the light absorption and accelerate the decomposition kinetics from the microscopic perspective at atomic level. This work contributes to understanding the physical mechanisms of doping elements on boosting the performance of calcium-based composites at the molecular level.

Microbial induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) is a green and environmentally friendly technology . Herein, porous biological CaCO 3 was prepared by MICP technology and then used as the carrier material for nZVI to prepare CaCO 3 @nZVI composite. Afterwards, the various properties of the CaCO 3 @nZVI composite were methodically characterized. Subsequently, the adsorption kinetic equation and adsorption isotherm model of TCE were carefully investigated, and the CaCO 3 @nZVI composite dosage, initial pH, temperature, aging time and the number of cycles on the TCE removal efficiency were examined. Finally, the degradation mechanism of TCE by CaCO 3 @nZVI composite was revealed. The results showed that nZVI particles were successfully supported on the biological CaCO 3 surface, and the specific surface area of the CaCO 3 @nZVI composite was 52.641 m 2 /g, which was much higher than that of bare nZVI (8.757 m 2 /g). The adsorption kinetics of CaCO 3 @nZVI composite for TCE removal was conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation, and Freundlich model was more appropriate as the adsorption isotherm model. The optimal conditions for the TCE removal were obtained to be 0.24 g/L CaCO 3 @nZVI composite dosage, 25 ℃, and initial pH of 7.0, respectively. Furthermore, the CaCO 3 @nZVI composite exhibited good stability and reusability. The main degradation products of TCE by CaCO 3 @nZVI composite were acetylene, ethylene, and ethane, and the synergistic effects of adsorption and degradation were the main mechanisms of TCE removal. Generally, this paper provides experimental support for the selection of nZVI carrier materials, which is useful for promoting the development and advancement of green repair materials.

The CaCO 3 deposits exist widely in the petroleum industry, causing severe damage to the equipment and production. In this article, a novel environment-friendly terpolymer scale inhibitor Poly (maleic anhydride - acrylic acid -2- acrylamide -2- methyl propanesulfonic acid) (P(MA-AA-AMPS))-containing carboxylic acid group, sulfonic acid group, and amide group was synthesized. The structure and molecular weight were characterized by FTIR, 1 H-NMR, and GPC. The static scale inhibition experiment was conducted to study the influence of factors such as the dosage, monomer ratio, temperature, pH, Ca 2+ concentration, and concentration on the scale inhibition performance of CaCO 3 . The results show that when the monomer ratio is 2.0:1.0:0.5 and the dosage is 20 mg L −1 , the maximum scale inhibition efficiency is 95.52%. Even when Ca 2+ concentration exceeds 1200 mg L −1 and temperature reaches 90 °C, the scale inhibition efficiency is still larger than 80%. The results of SEM and XRD show that P(MA-AA-AMPS) interferes with the growth of CaCO 3 crystal by adsorption, dispersion, and chelation. The effect leads to changes in the morphology of CaCO 3 crystals, the size of which drops from 20–30 μm to 2–5 μm. The P(MA-AA-AMPS) can transform CaCO 3 from stable calcite crystals to unstable aragonite and vaterite. Finally, the formation of CaCO 3 scale is well inhibited. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. We report a novel “anchor–shield” approach for synthesizing a yolk–shell-structured biocatalytic system that consists of a phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) protein particle core and a hollow silica shell with large mesopores by a combination of CaCO3 microtemplates and biomimetic silicification. The method is established upon filling porous CaCO3 cores with PAL via co-precipitation, controlled self-assembly and polycondensation of silanes, cross-link of the PAL molecules, and subsequent CaCO3 dissolution. During this process, the self-assembled layer of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide served as a structure-directing agent of the mesostructure and directed the overgrowth of the mesostructured silica on the external surface of PAL/CaCO3 hybrid microspheres; after CaCO3 dissolution, the cross-linked PAL particles were encapsulated in the hollow silica shell. The hollow silica shell around the enzyme particles provided a “shield” to protect from biological, thermal, and chemical degradation for the enzyme. As a result, the recycling of the PAL enzyme was improved remarkably in comparison to adsorbed PAL on CaCO3. PAL particles with a hollow silica shell still retained 60% of their original activity after 13 cycles, whereas adsorbed PAL on CaCO3 microparticles lost activity after 7 cycles. Moreover, immobilized PAL exhibited higher stability against a proteolytic agent, denaturants, heat, and extreme pH than adsorbed PAL on CaCO3 microparticles. These results demonstrated that the “anchor–shield” approach is an efficient method to obtain a stable and recycled biocatalyst with a yolk–shell structure.

Low-carbon MgO-CaO-C refractories are promising for clean steel refining, but their application is limited by CaO hydration and the deterioration of high-temperature performance caused by reduced carbon content. In this work, a CNTs/CaCO 3 co-coated MgO-CaO powder (CC-MCP) was successfully fabricated via a densified micro-zone deposition process employing MgO-CaO particles, polyethylene powder, and starch as materials. The as-prepared CC-MCP were incorporated into low-carbon MgO-CaO-C refractories to achieve a “two birds with one stone” effect, simultaneously enhancing both hydration resistance and high-temperature service performance. Compared to the control sample prepared with flake graphite as carbon source, the counterpart containing CC-MCP exhibited superior hydration resistance and high-temperature performances, including a 286% improvement in water vapor resistance, an increase of up to 209% in oxidation resistance, a 36% improvement in thermal shock resistance, and a reduction in slag penetration depth from 654 μm to 435 μm. This “two birds with one stone” strategy provides an effective and scalable route for developing high-performance ultralow -carbon MgO-CaO-C refractories for clean steel production, while simultaneously offering a practical solution to the hydration challenges faced by CaO-containing refractories under harsh storage and service conditions.

CaO/CaCO 3 thermochemical heat storage has been considered as a competitive technology in concentrated solar power plants. Carbide slag and red mud are solid wastes from the chlor-alkali industry and aluminum industry, respectively. In this work, the red mud/Mn co-doped high alumina cement-stabilized carbide slag was synthesized for CaO/CaCO 3 heat storage. The effects of the addition of high alumina cement and red mud/Mn on the heat storage capacity, cyclic stability, and optical absorption of the modified carbide slag were investigated. The modified carbide slag exhibits excellent heat storage capacity and optical absorption. The Ca 3 Al 2 O 6 and CaMnO 3 inhibit the growth of CaO grains. FeMnO 3 and Ca 2 Fe 2 O 5 possess high optical absorption properties . The additions of Mn and red mud enhance the heat storage rate and basicity of the carbide slag. The effective conversion of the modified carbide slag is 0.62 after 30 cycles, which is 3.1 times as high as that of the untreated carbide slag. The modified carbide slag reaches the optical absorptance of ~58%, which is 6.5 times as high as that of the untreated one. Thus, the red mud/Mn co-doped high alumina cement-stabilized carbide slag is a potential candidate for the CaO/CaCO 3 heat storage system .

Due to the stable chelating effect of organic phosphonates in wastewater, phosphonates with increasing emission are difficult to be removed effectively by traditional ferric salt flocculation , which has posed tough challenges for reducing total phosphorus pollution in recent years. In this work, calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) was introduced to work together with the widely investigated flocculant of ferric chloride (FeCl 3 ) to realize an efficient removal of nitrilotrismethylenephosphonic acid (NTMP) at much lower dosage of FeCl 3 . With an aid of synergy effect from together use of CaCO 3 and FeCl 3 , the remaining concentration as low as 0.16 mg−P/L, far below the sewage discharge limit (0.5 mg−P/L), was simply obtained with a significantly reduced Fe/P molar ratio at only 4, resulting from calcium source donor to form more stable Fe–Ca–P tridentate bridging complexes, high affinity towards ferric ions on CaCO 3 surface and slow-release alkaline from CaCO 3 . A comparison among sodium hydroxide (NaOH), calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH) 2 ) and CaCO 3 as additives, was carried out to highlight the advantages of using CaCO 3 and clarify the mechanism for the greatly improved performance by a set of characterizations including XRD, FTIR, Zeta potential , XPS , SEM−EDS and TG analyses. The addition of CaCO 3 in ferric flocculation resulted in further obvious advantages such as 75% shortened settling time and only one−third of sludge volume of the precipitant, beneficial to the sample handling in engineering application. The proposed new approach has been further confirmed to work efficiently on real phosphonate-containing wastewater. Discussion on the interaction between CaCO 3 and ferric salts in phosphonate solutions shed new insights into the working mechanism of using CaCO 3 for the treatment of phosphonates-containing wastewater.

Titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) has received widespread attention as high stability, low toxicity and costless photocatalyst , but it only exhibits photocatalytic activity under ultraviolet (UV) light. To improve TiO 2 photocatalytic efficiency, Bio-CaCO 3 /WO 3 /TiO 2 /(Ca,Y)F 2 :Tm,Yb was prepared. TiO 2 was combined with upconversion materials, coupled with WO 3 and loaded on oyster shell powder (Bio-CaCO 3 ), which showed that the prepared photocatalyst effectively reduce the band gap of TiO 2 , expand the photoreaction range of the material and avoid agglomeration, thus improving its photocatalytic efficiency and antibacterial efficiency. The photocatalytic degradation efficiency of Bio-CaCO 3 /WO 3 /TiO 2 /(Ca,Y)F 2 :Tm,Yb (50 mg) was 24.32% higher than that of TiO 2 /(Ca,Y)F 2 :Tm,Yb in 90 min. And its antibacterial rates against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) were enhanced by 38.68% and 25.89% compared to TiO 2 /(Ca,Y)F 2 :Tm,Yb, respectively.
