Electrical and mechanical characteristics of CaO-activated cementless ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) incorporating steel slag aggregates

Min-Chang Kang,Munhwa Kang,Goeun Jun,Yanchen Oinam,Hong Min Seung,Sukhoon Pyo

This study presents a sustainable and intelligent alternative to conventional cement-based ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) by developing a CaO-activated GGBFS cementless UHPC incorporating rapid-cooled electric arc furnace oxidizing slag (REOS) as a replacement for natural aggregates. As an industrial byproduct, REOS enhances mechanical performance while promoting electrical conductivity, forming efficient conductive networks within the matrix. These pathways enable self-sensing capabilities, allowing the material to detect stress and strain without external sensors. The experimental results showed that REOS improved fluidity (up to 235 mm) and maintained high compressive strength (exceeding 200 MPa). Additionally, it was found that REOS enhanced tensile properties, achieving tensile strength exceeding 21 MPa and maximum strain capacity of 0.72 %, particularly when combined with 0.3 % carbon fiber. The incorporation of carbon fiber significantly reduced electrical resistivity compared to the composite without carbon fiber. Furthermore, a life cycle assessment (LCA) demonstrated the environmental benefits of REOS, showing approximately 53 % lower carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions per unit compressive strength compared to traditional UHPC. This research highlights the multifunctionality of REOS in improving both performance and sustainability, offering valuable insights into the development of next-generation UHPC that integrates advanced sensing capabilities and aligns with circular economy principles.

A Model to Stabilize CO2 Uptake Capacity during Carbonation–Calcination Cycles and its Case of CaO–MgO

Qiancheng Zhu,Shibi Zeng,Ying Yu

Nowadays, capturing anthropogenic CO2 in a highly efficient and cost-effective way is one of the most challenging issues. Herein, the key parameters to stabilize CO2 uptake capacity have been studied based on four kinds of pure calcium oxides (CaO) prepared by a simple calcination method with four different calcium precursors. A simple ideal particle model was proposed to illustrate the uniform distribution of pure CaO, in which the CO2 uptake capacity is positively related with surface area of CaO particles and the stability is opposite to the distance between two CaO particles after carbonation. The adsorption capacity of the best sample with a distance of 398 nm between two CaO particles after carbonation only lost 0.344% per cycle, which is originated from the low possibility of the agglomeration between neighboring particles. On the basis of the proposed model, the composite with magnesium oxide (MgO) distributed uniformly in CaO was fabricated by a simple ball milling method, which possessed an excellent stability with a decay rate of only 3.9% over 100 carbonation–calcination cycles. In this case, MgO played as inert to increase the distance between CaO particles for agglomeration prevention.

An enhanced pH-response CS/CaO₂ nanocomposite with nucleocapsid structure for environmental remediation: Preparation, characterization, and application

Hui Xia,Quanhui Hu,Qingchao Zhang,Bangwen Lu,Xiaorui Guo,Jungang Guo,Wenjing Zhang

The formation process of contaminated groundwater is invariably associated with pH fluctuations caused by the intrusion of anthropogenic contaminants, including heavy metals and organic compounds. In this study, a pH-responsive CaO 2 nanocomposite wrapped in chitosan (CS/CaO 2 ) was successfully synthesized via a pH-regulated chemical precipitation method. The CS/CaO 2 exhibited a well-defined core-shell bilayer structure with particle sizes ranging from 100 to 200 nm. Significantly, the incorporation of the chitosan (CS) coating not only enhanced the pH responsiveness but also reduced nanoparticle agglomeration. The sequence of reagent addition was found to be critical in achieving successful encapsulation. Simulation experiments were performed to assess the remediation effect on organic p- nitrophenol (PNP) and inorganic heavy metals. The inner core CaO 2 , acting as a solid source of H 2 O 2 , would be released as the external CS was broken after experiencing pH response. A CaO 2 modified Fenton system was then provided for the oxidative degradation of PNP, and its concurrently generated Ca(OH) 2 could facilitate the precipitation and immobilization of heavy metals. Removal efficiency exceeded 95 % under the optimized experimental conditions, demonstrating the high effectiveness of this approach. Overall, this study presents an enhanced pH-responsive nucleocapsid CS/CaO 2 nanocomposite with promising applications in the multi-contaminant remediation.

Luminescence and Energy Transfer of Novel Dy3+/Eu3+ Co-doped Na2O-CaO-P2O5-B2O3-ZrO2 Nanocrystal Glasses

Fu Yingtao,Chen Zhaoyang,Sun Yifan,Liu Yi,Fan Yanwei,Wang Junhua,Chen Huiming

In order to develop glass-ceramic materials capable of emitting neutral white light and to address the limitations of single rare earth element ion-doped luminescent materials, a glass-ceramic material containing Dy 3+ /Eu 3+ -co-doped NaCaPO 4 nanocrystals was successfully synthesized using the melt-quenching and two-step crystallization methods. The prepared glass-ceramic materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The energy transfer process between Dy 3+ and Eu 3+ ions was confirmed through excitation spectra, emission spectra, and luminescence decay curves. The emission coordinates and correlated color temperatures of samples with different doping concentrations were calculated using the standard CIE 1931 colorimetric system. The results showed that coordinated emission was achieved in the glass-ceramic containing NaCaPO 4 nanocrystals under excitation at 363 nm. Furthermore, by adjusting the concentration ratio of Dy 3+ and Eu 3+ ions, the color temperature of the white light emission could be tuned from 9910 K to 5349 K, enabling modification of the emission color from the cool-white region to the pure-white region, with chromaticity coordinates reaching (0.3350, 0.3040). Additionally, the material exhibited high thermal stability, with an activation energy of 0.18649 eV. It is expected that the Dy 3+ /Eu 3+ -co-doped NaCaPO 4 glass-ceramic studied here has broad prospects for applications in white light-emitting diodes.

Strong microwave-absorbing catalyst Ni/CaO-CNT synthesis via enhancing magnetic loss for low carbon biodiesel production

Weiguo Liu,Phumlani Fortune Msomi,Ndzondelelo Bingwa,Chenggong Sun,Yunpu Wang,Zhenyong Lu,Hui Li

Microwave-assisted technology has emerged as an efficient approach to enhance heterogeneously catalyzed transesterification reactions to produce fatty acid methyl esters (FAME), which are the major components of biodiesel. Our previous studies have confirmed that the dielectric loss capability of the catalyst plays a crucial role in enhancing catalytic activity under microwave fields. However, in addition to dielectric loss performance, the impact of magnetic loss performance on material absorption performance must not be overlooked. To address this gap, this study systematically investigates the role of magnetic loss in microwave-assisted transesterification. Herein, we successfully synthesized a magnetic catalyst (Ni/CaO-CNT) and non-magnetic catalyst (Cu/CaO-CNT) to investigate influence of magnetic loss on transesterification, evaluated the catalytic performance in transesterification reaction of palm oil and methanol. The results indicated that Ni doping optimized the magnetization of Ni/CaO-CNT (5.4 emu/g), and when compared to Cu/CaO-CNT, the magnetic loss ability of Ni/CaO-CNT was increased by 6.5 times, greatly enhancing its microwave-absorbing capacity. Although Cu/CaO-CNT catalyst had a higher basicity (0.68 mmol/g) than the Ni/CaO-CNT (0.65 mmol/g), the Ni/CaO-CNT demonstrated superior catalytic performance under microwave conditions, achieving a transesterification conversion of 94.4% compared to 87.3% of Cu/CaO-CNT, an over 7% improvement that demonstrates magnetic loss significantly enhances catalytic efficiency beyond what can be achieved through basicity alone. Moreover, the turnover frequency (TOF) of Ni/CaO-CNT reaches 84.28 h −1 , substantially higher than that of Cu/CaO-CNT (68.12 h −1 ). Compared to the non-magnetic catalyst, Cu/CaO-CNT, the Ni/CaO-CNT catalyst saves 38.5% of energy consumption and reduces 2.1 kg of CO 2 per kilogram of FAME produced.

Study on sintering behaviors, microstructures, and dielectric properties of CaO–B2O3–SiO2/ZrSiO4 composites for LTCC applications

Feng Jingmin,Zhang Yajuan,Lu Yang,Shan Yiting,Guo Xiang,Zhou Hongqing

In this study, CaO–B 2 O 3 –SiO 2 (CBS) glass–ceramics were prepared and compounded with different contents of ZrSiO 4 . The sintering behavior, phase composition, microstructure, dielectric properties, thermal properties, and mechanical properties of this CBS glass–ceramic composite ZrSiO 4 ceramic system were investigated. The results show that CBS glass–ceramic can be sintered densely at 750 °C. However, the crystallinity is unexpectedly low and the dielectric properties are greatly damaged. Surprisingly, the addition of ZrSiO 4 improved the dielectric constant of the composites and achieved a dielectric adjustable in the range of 6.0–7.8. When the composite was sintered at 830 °C for 15 min with 35% ZrSiO 4 addition, the bulk density of the composite increased to 2.93 g/cm 3 . The dielectric constant measured at a high frequency of 13 GHz was 6.93 and the dielectric loss of 1.66 × 10 –3 . Accordingly, the addition of ZrSiO 4 reduced the thermal expansion coefficient of the composite to 6.1 ppm/°C and increased the flexural strength of the composite to 248 MPa.

Simultaneous NO/CO2 removal performance using Ce-doped CaO in calcium looping process: Experimental and DFT studies

Shoubing Chai,Yingjie Li,Wan Zhang,Zirui He

In carbonation stage of calcium looping process, NO could be reduced by CO using CaO as a catalyst, allowing simultaneous CO 2 and NO removal. However, to achieve efficient NO removal, the required CO/NO molar ratio in the carbonator is very high (up to 30:1), which leads to lots of unreacted CO in the exhaust gas. In this work, to maintain high efficiency of NO removal at low CO concentration in carbonator, Ce-doped CaO was employed to simultaneously enhance NO and CO 2 removal performance. The effects of Ce-doped CaO on simultaneous CO 2 and NO removal in bubbling fluidized bed reactor were investigated during the carbonation stage of calcium looping process. When the molar ratio of CO/NO is about 3.57:1, Ce-doped CaO obtains an 83% CO 2 capture efficiency and a 97% NO removal efficiency in 20 cycles in chemical reaction controlling stage. The average CO concentration in exhaust gas of Ce-CaO was reduced by 79% at the same NO removal efficiency as Mn-doped CaO. The presence of Ce 3+ makes the charge imbalance of the material, resulting in more charge transfer from the Ce-CaO surface to the molecules. The density functional theory reveals that Ce doping reduces the energy barriers of the conversion of NO to N 2 and the CO 2 adsorption, promoting the simultaneous NO/CO 2 removal in carbonation stage. Therefore, under a low molar ratio of CO/NO in carbonation stage of calcium looping, Ce considerably improves the simultaneous CO 2 and NO removal action of CO and CaO.

Synthesis of CaO/ZrO2 based catalyst by using UiO–66(Zr) and calcium acetate for biodiesel production

Hui Li,Yongbo Wang,Xiaoling Ma,Min Guo,Yan Li,Guoning Li,Ping Cui,Shoujun Zhou,Mingzhi Yu

Ca 2+ ion leaching and poor pore structure are obstacles of CaO for biodiesel production . To this end, a typical Zr–based metal organic framework, UiO–66(Zr) is adopted to support calcium acetate to prepare CaO/ZrO 2 catalyst. For comparison, catalyst precursor is activated in nitrogen (UCN) and air (UCA) atmosphere, respectively. Preparation factors including calcium acetate addition and activation temperature are evaluated. Moreover, effects of transesterification parameters on oil conversion are investigated and the optimized parameters are further used to examine catalyst reusability . Meanwhile, catalysts are characterized with TG, XRD, XPS , FTIR, Hammett indicator titration, N 2 adsorption and desorption. Results reveal UCN calcined at 650 °C (UCN650) and UCA calcined at 700 °C (UCA700) separately exhibits the best catalytic performance. The maximum conversion of 96.99% is achieved by UCN650 with catalyst amount of 6 wt% and molar ratio of methanol to oil of 9 at 65 °C for 60 min. Even after being used 3 cycles, conversion of 92.76% is still achieved by UCN650. By contrast, UCA700 shows lower conversion of 92.94% at the first cycle with catalyst amount of 8 wt% and molar ratio of methanol to oil of 9 at 65 °C for 60 min.

Pulse pyrolysis of waste cooking oil over CaO: Exploration of catalyst deactivation pathway based on feedstock characteristics

Qiuhao Wu,Linyao Ke,Yunpu Wang,Nan Zhou,Hui Li,Qi Yang,Jiamin Xu,Leilei Dai,Rongge Zou,Yuhuan Liu,Roger Ruan

Pulse pyrolysis was carried out to realize real-time monitoring of CaO catalyst deactivation and regeneration in the catalytic pyrolysis of waste cooking oil (WCO) and free fatty acids (FFAs) based on the pyrolysis characteristics of feed stocks. The high unsaturation of the feedstock decreases the initial decomposition temperature and reduces the content of oxygen-containing compounds. CaO catalyst was completely deactivated after several times of pulse pyrolysis. During the pyrolysis of WCO, the catalytic activity of CaO did not recover after the pause of pulse pyrolysis. However, the catalytic activity all recovered during the pyrolysis of FFAs, but the rate of deactivation was accelerated. A large amount of Ca(OH) 2 and CaCO 3 were detected in the deactivated catalyst, and soluble coke was not detected. The research suggested that the change of crystal phases and agglomeration were the vital cause that impact the CaO catalyst stability.

Compressing Two-Dimensional Graphite-Nanosheet-Supported CaO for Optimizing Porous Structures toward High-Volumetric-Performance Heat Storage

Rui Han,Shuang Xing,Xueqian Wu,Caihong Pang,Shuangchun Lu,Yun Su,Qingling Liu,Chunfeng Song,Jihui Gao

The calcium-looping process based on the reversible carbonation/calcination of CaO is an advantageous candidate for thermochemical energy storage (TCES) in concentrated solar power plants. High volumetric energy density combined with high cycling stability is highly desired for CaO-based heat storage material. In this work, we report a simple compression strategy to regulate the meso- and macropores of graphite nanosheet (GNS)-supported CaO, thereby increasing the volumetric energy density of composite materials. Thanks to the separation effect of GNSs on CaO grains, the composite that underwent compression can still maintain high gravimetric energy density and cycle stability. Moreover, as a comparison, the effects of compression on the thermal storage performance of Al-doped CaO and pure CaO were investigated. The results show that compression would reduce the thermal storage stability of Al-doped CaO and pure CaO and worsen the mass transfer of CO2 during the reaction. It further proves the superiority of the combination of compression and GNS-supporting strategies to obtain Ca-based TCES materials with high gravimetric energy density, high volumetric energy density, and excellent cycle stability.

Thermodynamic evaluation and experimental investigation of CaO-assisted Fe-based chemical looping reforming process for syngas production

Yunlei Zhao,Bo Jin,Xiao Luo,Zhiwu Liang

Many works have focused on the reactivity and valence transition of Fe-based oxygen carriers in chemical looping partial oxidation reforming process. However, the reforming performance and impacts of operating factors are unclear with the co-feeding of CaO being CO 2 carrier to realize simultaneous CO 2 capture and utilization. In this work, thermodynamic equilibrium calculation, reactivity test and material characterization are carried out to optimize the process characteristics. The impacts of feeding conditions (Fe/Al weight ratio, methane amount, Ca/Fe mole ratio and packing manner) on the reforming reactivity are obtained to reveal the interaction between CaO and Fe 2 O 3 . The gas product distribution indicates that the carbon deposition and oxidation degree is closely related to CH 4 amount. The spatial configuration between CaCO 3 and Fe 2 O 3 reforming is essential to obtain the desirable reforming products. The difference of FeO existence on the theoretical and experimental phase components illustrates that reaction degree is affected by the reduction agent amount. By comparing the methane temperature-programmed reaction of CaCO 3 , Fe 2 O 3 and their mixture, it is suggested that the existence of CaCO 3 is beneficial for accelerating iron-based methane reforming. This study provides a way to improve reaction degree and optimize process characteristic for chemical looping reforming process.

Understanding the enhancement of CaO on water gas shift reaction for H2 production by density functional theory

Xianyao Yan,Yingjie Li,Chunxiao Zhang,Yuzhuo Wang,Jianli Zhao,Zeyan Wang

The water gas shift reaction is an important reaction for H 2 production in various industrial applications. The presence of CaO can promote the reactivity of the water gas shift reaction without any catalysts, but the enhancement mechanism of CaO in this reaction is difficult to determine just by the experiment. In this work, the water gas shift reaction along four possible pathways on the CaO surface were studied by density functional theory (DFT) analysis. The energy barriers along the pathways were analyzed to determine the most possible reaction pathway and role of the CaO surface. The DFT calculation results show that the WGS reaction is more prone to proceed along the redox-a pathway probably: H 2 O dissociates into hydroxyl and atomic H spontaneously when H 2 O and CO co-adsorb on the CaO surface, then the hydroxyl continues to dissociate and CO is oxidized by the generated atomic O. Afterwards, H 2 molecule generates from two atomic H, and then CO 2 adsorbs and H 2 desorbs simultaneously on the CaO surface. The CaO surface enables the spontaneous dissociation of H 2 O, which is the rate-limiting step of WGS reaction. The generation of CO 2 is facilitated, and the energy barrier is reduced from 2.304 to 0.757 eV on the CaO surface. Besides, the formation of CO 3 2− on the surface avoids the energy barrier for CO 2 desorption, while the CO 2 also occupies the active site and reduces the enhancement of CaO on WGS reaction. The calculation result reinforces the comprehension on the mechanism of CaO on WGS reaction.
