In this study, a series of Co-doped NPC biochar (nCo-NPC) was prepared by one-step pyrolysis of N and P-rich Chlorella pyrenoidosa (CP) waste mixed with cobalt nitrate for heterogeneous catalytic ozonation (HCO) degradation of ibuprofen (IBU). Compared to the HCO process using CoOx or NPC catalysts, the 2Co-NPC catalyst showed superior performance in the degradation of IBU due to the synergistic effect between the CoOx and NPC. The 2Co-NPC catalyst exhibited high stability after five trials, with the removal efficiency decreasing from 99.9 % to 85.4 %. Moreover, hydroxyl radicals ( OH) and adsorbed atomic oxygen (*O) were identified as the main active species in 2Co-NPC HCO process. The coupling of NPC and CoOx formed electron-rich Co(II) center and electron-deficient NPC center. The electron-rich Co(II) center can direct decomposition of adsorbed ozone into *O and further convert to OH. The electron-deficient NPC center gained electrons from organic pollutants, C N, C O, and P groups through C O Co and C N Co bonds, stimulating the π-cation reaction to transfer to the Co(II) center, thus accelerating the cycling between Co(II) and Co(III). Additionally, the deprotonation of surface hydroxyl groups may also serve as a potential active site for the decomposition of ozone into OH. This study used biomass CP as a precursor coupled with cobalt salt, revealing electron transfer pathways and providing new insights for the future developing of low-cost, efficient, and stable ozone catalysts.

Microalgae-bacteria symbiotic systems were known to have great potential for simultaneous water purification and resource recovery, among them, microalgae-bacteria biofilm/granules have attracted much attention due to its excellent effluent quality and convenient biomass recovery. However, the effect of bacteria with attached-growth mode on microalgae, which has more significance for bioresource utilization, has been historically ignored. Thus, this study attempted to explore the responses of C. vulgaris to extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) extracted from aerobic granular sludge (AGS), for enhancing the understanding of microscopic mechanism of attached microalgae-bacteria symbiosis. Results showed that the performance of C. vulgaris was effectively boosted with AGS-EPS treatment at 12–16 mg TOC/L, highest biomass production (0.32±0.01 g/L), lipid accumulation (44.33±5.69%) and flocculation ability (20.83±0.21%) were achieved. These phenotypes were promoted associated with bioactive microbial metabolites in AGS-EPS (N-acyl-homoserine lactones, humic acid and tryptophan). Furthermore, the addition of CO 2 triggered carbon flow into the storage of lipids in C. vulgaris , and the synergistic effect of AGS-EPS and CO 2 for improving microalgal flocculation ability was disclosed. Transcriptomic analysis further revealed up-regulation of synthesis pathways for fatty acid and triacylglycerol that was triggered by AGS-EPS. And within the context of CO 2 addition, AGS-EPS substantially upregulated the expression of aromatic protein encoding genes, which further enhanced the self-flocculation of C. vulgaris . These findings provide novel insights into the microscopic mechanism of microalgae-bacteria symbiosis, and bring new enlightenment to wastewater valorization and carbon-neutral operation of wastewater treatment plants based on the symbiotic biofilm/biogranules system.

Food-derived dual-effect peptides exhibit multi-target therapeutic potential and represent a promising strategy for managing comorbid conditions. However, technical challenges in their purification remain major obstacles to practical application. In this study, a nanofibrous membrane immobilized with angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) and α-amylase (PPA) was developed for the efficient screening of dual-target inhibitory peptides. The immobilized enzymes achieved maximum loading capacities of 1.0466 mg/cm 2 (ACE) and 2.2871 mg/cm 2 (PPA), while retaining specific activities of 0.0173 U/mg and 0.0208 U/mg, respectively. This approach markedly reduced the number of peptide candidates from 1714 to 234, while enhancing their quality, as evidenced by increased inhibitory activities of 21.85 % for ACE and 22.22 % for PPA. Two dual-target inhibitory peptides, YDPR and LPDYR, were successfully isolated from Chlorella protein hydrolysates. Enzyme inhibition assays confirmed their potent inhibitory effects on ACE (YDPR: IC 50 = 89.05 ± 0.90 μM; LPDYR IC 50 = 170.50 ± 0.68 μM) and PPA (YDPR: IC 50 = 76.30 ± 1.05 μM; LPDYR: IC 50 = 112.51 ± 3.19 μM). Molecular dynamics simulations revealed that the dual inhibitory activities of these peptides arise from the formation of stable enzyme-peptide complexes involving key catalytic residues of ACE (Glu384, Tyr523, His353, Ala354, and Glu411) and PPA (His305, Asp300, Asp356, and Trp59). In summary, the high-efficiency screening strategy developed here provides a solid theoretical and technical foundation for the discovery of multi-target inhibitors.

Photosynthetic algae–microbial fuel cells (PAMFCs) are attractive for energy-positive wastewater treatment and carbon mitigation. However, PAMFC performance under continuous flow is often constrained by limited cathodic electron-acceptor supply and unstable photosynthetic biofilms, while the extent to which cathode interfacial engineering can stabilize diurnal power output and assimilative NH4+–N removal remains unclear. In this study, the sponge-like and petal-like ZnO0.2-NiO@rGO-modified carbon fibers (ZnO0.2-NiO@rGO-pCFs and ZnO0.2-NiO@rGO-pCFp) and pre-fabricated carbon felt (pCF) were used as cathode materials to construct three sets of PAMFC systems. Under light–dark cycling, the engineered cathodes reached steady operation within about 6.5 d and increased the steady-state voltage to approximately 0.35 V, compared with approximately 0.08 V for pCF. Under continuous-flow conditions, cathodic NH4+–N removal exhibited a stable diurnal rhythm, with higher removal during illumination at about 43–51% than in the dark at about 29–30%, consistent with algal assimilation as the primary nitrogen sink, while cathode modification mainly improved the cathodic microenvironment and response stability. Compared with pCF, the ZnO0.2–NiO@rGO cathode enriched a more even, Chlorophyta-dominated algal biofilm with an approximate relative abundance of 80%, indicating that its selective interfacial environment favors biofilm stabilization and sustains in situ oxygen production and cathodic electron-acceptor supply. Consequently, the composite cathode enhanced voltage output and stabilized light-enhanced, assimilative NH4+–N removal under aeration-free operation, while establishing an interpretable link between electrochemical performance and 18S rDNA-derived community assembly features, thereby providing a low-cost cathode design basis for nitrogen removal in wastewater treatment.

Nanoplastics and di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) are ubiquitous emerging contaminants that are transferred among organisms through food chain in the ecosystem. This study evaluated the trophic transfer of polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPs) and DEHP in a food chain including Chlorella pyrenoidosa , Daphnia magna and Micropterus salmoides (algae-crustacean-fish) and lipid metabolism at a higher trophic level in fish. Our results showed that the PSNPs and DEHP accumulated in C. pyrenoidosa or D. magna were transferred to the M. salmoides , of which the DEHP were not biomagnified, while the PSNPs were trophically amplified by the food chain. It is suggested that more PSNPs might be accumulated by higher level consumers in a longer food chain. Additionally, the trophic transfer of PSNPs and DEHP resulted in antioxidant response and histopathological damage in M. salmoides . Moreover, the lipid biochemical parameters and lipid metabolism related genes ( fasn , hsl , cpt1a , atgl , apob , fabp1 , lpl , cetp ) of M. salmoides were significantly affected, which indicated disturbance of lipid metabolism. This study offers great insight into the transfer of contaminants by trophic transfer and their negative effects on organisms at higher trophic levels, which cause human exposure to MNPs and organic contaminants in the ecosystem.

This work investigated the cultivation of Chlorella vulgaris in a thin-film flat plate photobioreactor under outdoor conditions and using digested piggery wastewater as the culture medium. The algal cells were able to adapt quickly to the wastewater and outdoor conditions. A specific growth rate of 0.12 day −1 was obtained in the exponential growth phase, which was slightly higher than that during indoor cultivation using artificial culture medium. Results showed that Chlorella vulgaris effectively removed TN, TP, and COD by 72.48%, 86.93%, and 85.94%. Due to the difference in culture conditions and phosphorus availability, the biomass from outdoor cultivation contained higher lipid content and more unsaturated fatty acids compared to indoor cultures, while the amino acid composition was unaffected. Results of metallic element assay indicated that the biomass cultured with wastewater conformed to the standards required for animal feed additive production. The overall cost of the biomass production in the thin-film flat plate photobioreactor (32.94 US$/kg) was estimated to be 4.67 times lower than that of indoor cultivation (154.04 US$/kg). Together, these results provide a basis for large-scale outdoor production of microalgae and wastewater bioremediation.

The novel proteins, i.e., Clostridium autoethanogenum (CAP), Tenebrio molitor (TM), Chlorella vulgaris (ChM), and cottonseed protein concentrate (CSM), are promising food for the future aquaculture due to the limited fishmeal (FM) resources. However, in-depth investigations on the intestinal barriers of fish when fed novel proteins are sparse, and the association between intestinal flora and physiological biomarkers is still unknown. Five isonitrogenous and isolipidic diets comprising various proteins were developed, with fishmeal serving as the control and novel proteins as the experimental diets. Largemouth bass ( Micropterus salmoides ) with an initial body weight of 211.9 ± 1.2 g were used as experimental model and fed with these five diets for eight weeks. The findings from the current study indicated that the intestinal histological structure as well as immunochemistry barrier performance of the ChM, CAP, and TM groups were superior to those of the CSM and FM groups, despite the fact that the villi height of FM was the greatest of all groups. Similarly, the intestinal inflammatory response and the permeability were elevated in CSM while decreased in ChM, CAP, and TM group. Concerning the intestinal short fatty acids (SCFAs), the levels in the CAP as well as ChM group were greater than the other proteins. From the data analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequencing, the abundance of opportunistic pathogens including (Ralstonia , Acinetobacter , Aeromonas , and Protebacteria) were higher in CSM group while attenuated in ChM, CAP and TM group. In addition, the abundance of nine types of intestinal-barriers-repairing probiotics were elevated in all novel proteins compared with the fishmeal group. These altered microbiota were highly correlated with intestinal inflammatory response, antioxidant status, immunochemistry barrier, physical barrier and SCFAs indexes by Mantel test and Pearson's correlation analysis. Collectively, the ranking of the beneficial functions among these five proteins was ChM > CAP>TM > FM > CSM according to Z -score and this study provides in-depth data manifesting the effects of novel proteins on the gut health status of large-size largemouth bass.
