The rational design of heterointerfaces is a potent strategy for optimizing the electronic structure of catalysts, yet achieving site-specific activation at the atomic level remains a formidable challenge. Nevertheless, most reported heterostructures suffer from ill-defined interfaces and non-specific activation, thereby obscuring structure-activity relationships and limiting mechanistic understanding. Herein, we propose a lattice-guided MOF-on-MOF strategy to fabricate an atomically precise CoP/(CoFe)P 2 interface embedded within an N-doped carbon matrix (CoP/(CoFe)P 2 -C). Specifically, the epitaxial growth of CoFe-PBA nanocubes on a MOF-274 template yields a MOF-274@PBA precursor with pre-organized metal domains, which are transformed into intimate phosphide heterojunctions during phosphidation. The optimized CoP/(CoFe)P 2 -C catalyst exhibits exceptional oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity in alkaline media, requiring an overpotential of only 269 mV to reach 10 mA cm −2 , while demonstrating remarkable structural stability for over 60 h. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that this superior performance stems from a site-specific electronic sacrifice mechanism. At the heterointerface, specific Co sites act as electronic buffers, sacrificially stabilizing unfavorable local configurations. This redistribution optimizes the electronic structure of adjacent Co and Fe sites, collectively lowering the kinetic barrier for *OOH formation and thus enhancing OER kinetics. This work establishes a controllable and generalizable strategy for constructing phosphide heterointerfaces with atomic-level precision, and provides fundamental mechanistic insights into the rational design of advanced OER electrocatalysts through site-specific electronic modulation.

Rationally designing single-atom catalysts (SACs) with high atomic efficiency and excellent catalytic performance is effective for boosting sodium borohydride (NaBH 4 ) hydrolysis activity. Herein, a series of Pt single-atom catalysts supported on Co-based compounds (Pt/CoP-B, Pt/CoP, Pt/Co 3 O 4 -B) were successfully synthesized via wet impregnation method. Pt M /CoP-B (6.2 wt% Pt loading) exhibited optimal performance at 30 °C: a turnover frequency (TOF) of 1103.26 mol H2 min −1 mol −1 Pt , a hydrogen generation rate (HGR) of 10746 mL min −1 g −1 cat which corresponded to 1.46 times higher than Pt M /Co 3 O 4 -B and 1.33 times higher than Pt M /CoP, outperforming most reported noble metal-based catalysts. It also possessed a low activation energy of 31.05 kJ mol −1 and excellent cycling stability, retaining 95.15 % of initial activity after five consecutive cycles. XPS confirmed strong metal-support interaction between Pt single atoms and CoP-B, which inducing electron transfer from Pt to Co to form electron-deficient Pt and electron-rich Co. DFT calculations revealed that Pt/CoP-B imposes a much lower energy barrier for rate-determining B–H bond cleavage and more effectively promotes H 2 O adsorption. This work offers a new paradigm for creating complementary electronic sites via single-atom-support synergy, opening a novel avenue for advanced NaBH 4 hydrolysis catalysts.

The transition metal phosphide has been widely used as an anode material for lithium and sodium-ion batteries (LIBs and SIBs) due to its high discharge capacity and stable voltage platform. However, some shortcomings such as poor electronic conductivity and low ionic mobility seriously affected its electrochemical performance . To solve these problems, we designed and synthesized the multi-hierarchy structure of Spanish-dagger shaped CoP nanosheets decorated carbon sponge (CoP/CS). The structure is composed of the primary hyperfine CoP nanorods , the secondary micro-size flowers, the tertiary flower/branch carbon skeleton, and the quaternary electrode with a vibrant spatial three-dimensional (3D) network. This unique structure can not only restrict the volume expansion and self-aggregation of CoP but also can reduce the transport length of Li + /Na + . Besides, it has been verified that CoP and CS are bonded by chemical bonds. The CoP/CS electrode has been confirmed to have higher conductivity and lower resistivity than pure CS. Besides, the natural N-doped CS can further provide more active sites for in-situ growth of Co(OH)F precursor (based on the Co-N bonds). As a result, the CoP/CS composite exhibits the impressing capacity (2.4 mAh cm –2 at 0.6 mA cm –2 after 70 cycles in LIBs and 0.834 mAh cm –2 at 0.2 mA cm –2 after 50 cycles in SIBs) and outstanding rate performance. Meanwhile, the excellent cycling stability (0.514 mAh cm –2 at 1 mA cm –2 after 900 cycles) has been verified in SIBs. This work offers a new strategy for the design of multi-hierarchy materials, which may enable the high energy density storage for devices.

Developing high-performance and low-cost self-supporting electrodes as pH-universal electrocatalysts for the hydrogen-evolution reaction (HER) and realizing high-quality hydrogen production at a high current density are highly desirable, but are hugely challenging. We created a self-supporting electrode with a coupled hierarchical heterostructure by simple electrodeposition followed by sulfurization. It comprised oxygen-deficient molybdenum oxide (MoO3−x) and cobalt phosphide (CoP) on nickel foam (NF), which represented a highly active pH-universal electrocatalyst for the HER at a high current density. Benefiting from a plethora of catalytic active sites, improved interfacial charge transfer, and strong electronic interaction, this type of MoO3−x@CoP/NF electrode delivered a superior catalytic performance. Overpotentials of only 100 mV, 135 mV, and 400 mV were needed to realize a high current density of 1 A cm−2 in alkaline, acid and neutral media, respectively, which were superior to those of most other well-developed materials based on non-noble metals. Our experimental work demonstrates the synergistic advantages of a MoO3−x@CoP heterostructure for improving the intrinsic catalytic performance but also paves a new path for the rational design of advanced electrodes for hydrogen generation in a wide range of pH conditions.

The preparation of two-dimensional (2D) composite material consisting of an active metal-based phase and carbon matrix is still a challenge. Herein, the 2D bimetal Co-TCPP(Fe) metal–organic framework (MOF) is synthesized and then adopted as the precursor to prepare a 2D composite electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). After carbonization and phosphorization, the 2D MOF is transformed into a composite nanoplate formed by Fe-doped CoP nanoparticles and a carbon matrix (Fe-CoP/C). This Fe-CoP/C composite exhibits a favorable OER performance in 1 M KOH with a low overpotential of 290 mV at 10 mA cm−2, which is better than that of counterparts without Fe and 2D morphology. The in situ formed metal (oxy)hydroxide is considered to be the main active species for the OER. The improved OER performance of Fe-CoP/C could be attributed to the Fe-doping in Co (oxy)hydroxide as well as the high electrochemical surface area induced by the 2D nanoplate morphology and conductive carbon network.

Electrochemical water splitting, the most direct and clean method used for the production of hydrogen, requires highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts that can accelerate hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) and oxygen evolution reactions (OER) by overcoming their kinetics barriers. Herein, self-supported F, N codoping CoP nanosheets (denoted as FN-CoP NS) are prepared as efficient and stable bifunctional electrocatalysts. Codoping of F and N neutralizes the electronegativity of surface P-O by cleaving the Co-P-O of non-metallic P sites on the surface (O derived from the surface oxidation). This contributes to an increased Co 2+ content with considerable adjustable electronegativity and also optimizes HER and OER processes. As a result, FN-CoP NS requires 66 and 241 mV overpotentials to deliver the current density of 10 mA cm −2 during HER and OER, respectively. A full water electrolyzer equipped FN-CoP NS as both cathode and anode only require 1.57 V to drive the current density of 10 mA cm −2 and to sustain 50 mA cm −2 for 48 h. This work adjusts the electronic structure of metal phosphides by a double anion codoping strategy, which provides a reference value for the rational design of efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts.

Photocatalytic CO 2 reduction has been regarded as an ideal method to simulate photosynthesis for achieving carbon neutralization. However, poor charge transfer efficiency limits its development. Herein, an efficient Co/CoP@C catalyst was prepared with compact contact of Co and CoP layer by using MOF as precursor. At the interface of Co/CoP, the difference in functionality between the two phases may result in uneven distribution of electrons, thus forming a self-driven space-chare region. In this region, spontaneous electron transfer is guaranteed, thus facilitating the effective separation of photogenerated carriers as well as boosting the utilization of solar energy. Furthermore, the electron density of active site Co in CoP is increased and more active sites are exposed, which promotes the adsorption and activation of CO 2 molecules. Together with suitable redox potential, low energy barrier for *COOH formation and easy desorption of CO, the reduction rate of CO 2 catalyzed by Co/CoP@C is 4 times higher than that of CoP@C.

The development of electrocatalysts for efficient water splitting is a pivotal and challenging task. Transition-metal phosphides (TMPs) have been known as one of the most promising candidates for the efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) due to their favorable intrinsic reactivity. However, structural engineering related to the gas bubbles evolution and tiny regulation of components concerned with the electronic structure remained as a significant challenge that requires further optimization. Herein, the nanoarrays (NAs) composed of ultrasmall Co2P and CoP nanoparticle-embedded N-doped carbon matrix (Co2P&CoP@N–C) are prepared and demonstrated an overpotential of 62.8 ± 4.7 mV at 10 mA cm–2 in 1.0 M KOH. The nanoarray-structured electrocatalyst revealed the superaerophobicity and facilitates the detachment of the in situ formed hydrogen gas bubbles, ensuring abundant catalytic sites and electrode–electrolyte interface for the mass transfer process. The amount of P doping modulated the local electron density around Co and P atoms, which attains a favorable compromise to afford sufficient electrons for the electrocatalysis and inhibit the negative influence of H2 desorption. Significantly, the lowered overpotential induced by the electrocatalyst surface architecture is much stronger than that of the component content and promotes the electrocatalytic activity.

Transition metal phosphates have proved to be promising electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) of water splitting, however, further increasing their active sites and catalytic activity remains a major challenge. Herein, accordion-like Co-MOF with layered structure was synthesized. After subsequent carbonization and phosphidization, lamellar heterostructured Co/CoP nanocrystals encapsulated in a P, N co-doped C matrix (Co/CoP@PNC) was obtained. Heterojunction provides abundant active sites and improves electron transfer rate. Additionally, the effect of phosphating degree on the electrocatalytic activity was studied. In the alkaline electrolyte , the current density of the optimized Co/CoP@PNC-10 for HER reached 10 mA cm −2 at overpotential of 137 mV in 1.0 M KOH, which was superior to most of transition metal-based electrocatalysts. This work provides new guidance for the design and development of transition metal-based electrocatalysts.

Graphical CoP for photocatalysis : Sphericalmesoporous SBA-15-supported CoP nanoparticlecatalysts tuning the highly efficient photocatalytic CO-and H 2 -generating pathways with product selectivity of up to 76.3 %and 99.9 % through switching solvent, respectively, were in situ fabricated by CoP embedded on the surface and interior of the porous s-SBA-15. The highly active spherical hybrid catalysts with diameters of 3–8 μm for robust selective CO 2 photoreduction and hydrogen production by switching solvent, CoP/(i)s-SBA-15 and CoP/(o)s-SBA-15, were in situ synthesized for the first time by incorporating CoP nanoparticles on the interior and outside of the spherical mesoporous Santa Barbara Amorphous (s-SBA)-type material s-SBA-15. CoP/(i)s-SBA-15 has a larger pore diameter of ∼9.5 nm, relative to ∼5.7 nm of CoP/(o)s-SBA-15, and a calculated Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area of ∼214 m 2 g −1 compared with ∼336 m 2 g −1 for the latter. In comparison with bare CoP, the composites exhibited excellent catalytic CO- and H 2 -generating performance with product selectivity of up to 76.3 % and 99.9 % through switching solvents containing Ru-based photosensitizer under ambient conditions, respectively. The influences of various solvents and electron donors, as well as the amounts of H 2 O, and catalyst on reaction kinetics for CO 2 reduction and H 2 production, and intrinsic properties of both catalysts were investigated and compared.

The development of high-efficiency and low-cost oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts has attracted increasing research attention. Herein, we report a novel nanocomposite of N-doped CoP nanoparticles embedded in porous carbon nanofibers (N–CoP@NPCNFs) synthesized using zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67)@Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers (ZIF-67@PNFs) as the precursor through carbonization, oxidation and phosphidation with N-doping. The fabricated N 1 –CoP@NPCNFs-900 shows outstanding electrocatalytic properties for OER due to a synergistic effect between the carbon nanofibers and the N-doped CoP nanoparticles. It exhibits a low overpotential of only 266 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , a small Tafel slope of 70 mV dec −1 and excellent durability for OER in 1.0 M KOH. Therefore, the obtained N 1 –CoP@NPCNFs-900 is promising for application as a high-efficiency and low-cost OER electrocatalyst.

Ammonia borane (NH 3 BH 3 , AB) is promising for chemical hydrogen storage; however, current systems for rapid hydrogen production are limited by the expensive noble metal catalysts required for AB hydrolysis. Here we report the design and synthesis of a highly efficient and robust non-noble-metal catalyst for the hydrolysis of AB at 298 K (TOF = 89.56 mol H2 min −1 mol Co −1 ). Experiments and density functional theory calculations were performed to explore the catalyst’s hybrid nanoparticle heterostructure and its catalytic mechanism. The catalyst comprised nitrogen-doped carbon dots confining CoO and CoP , and exhibited strong interface-induced synergistic catalysis for AB hydrolysis that effectively decreased the energy barriers for the dissociation of both AB and water molecules. The co-doping of N and P introduced numerous defects, and further regulated the reactivity of the carbon layers. The heterogeneous interface design technique presented here provides a new strategy for developing efficient and inexpensive non-noble-metal catalysts that may be applicable in other fields related to energy catalysis.
