The synergistic effect of Ni doping on Cu/Cu2O(111) surface in aqueous phase reforming of methanol for hydrogen production

Haiping Zhu,Yuxin Ge,Pengcheng Zhao,Zihan Sun,Zhuoyu Zheng,Fan Yang,Lin Chen,Yongqi Mao,Xueer Huang,Jiajin Li,Minglei Lu,Tiejun Wang

Aqueous phase reforming of methanol (APRM) is a promising technology for efficiently producing hydrogen (H 2 ) in a sustainable approach, enabling convenient and safe H 2 storage and transportation. Herein, we develop a Ni/Cu/Cu 2 O@CA catalyst with excellent performance by integrating density functional theory (DFT) calculation and experimental investigations. DFT results show that Ni doping greatly reduced the activation energy (E a ) of CH 3 OH dehydrogenation and H 2 O dissociation, especially the E a of the rate-limiting step of CH 3 O∗ → CH 2 O∗ + H∗ from 1.71 eV to 1.28 eV. Additionally, the Cu/Cu 2 O(111) surface is found to promote the CO conversion. To verify the synergistic effect between Ni and Cu/Cu 2 O(111), a 3D spherical porous Ni/Cu/Cu 2 O@CA catalyst is synthesized for APRM experiments, achieving a peak H 2 production rate of 135.93 μmolH 2 /g cat /s at 240 °C, which is 2.0 times higher than that of the Cu/Cu 2 O@CA catalyst. Overall, this work presents an implementable strategy for developing non-noble metal catalysts for sustainable H 2 production.

Synthesis and kinetics investigation of meso-microporous Cu-SAPO-34 catalysts for the selective catalytic reduction of NO with ammonia

Jixing Liu,Fuhong Yu,Jian Liu,Lifeng Cui,Zhen Zhao,Yuechang Wei,Qianyao Sun

A series of meso-microporous Cu-SAPO-34 catalysts were successfully synthesized by a one-pot hydrothermal crystallization method, and these catalysts exhibited excellent NH 3 -SCR performance at low temperature. Their structure and physic chemical properties were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), N 2 sorption-desorption, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission spectrometer (ICP-AES), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XPS), Temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia (NH 3 -TPD), Ultraviolet visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS) and Temperature programmed reduction (TPR). The analysis results indicate that the high activities of Cu-SAPO-34 catalysts could be attributed to the enhancement of redox property, the formation of mesopores and the more acid sites. Furthermore, the kinetic results verify that the formation of mesopores remarkably reduces diffusion resistance and then improves the accessibility of reactants to catalytically active sites. The 1.0-Cu-SAPO-34 catalyst exhibited the high NO conversion (>   90%) among the wide activity temperature window in the range of 150–425°C.

Stable Cu Catalysts Supported by Two-dimensional SiO2 with Strong Metal–Support Interaction

Shenghua Wang,Kai Feng,Dake Zhang,Deren Yang,Mengqi Xiao,Chengcheng Zhang,Le He,Binhang Yan,Geoffrey A. Ozin,Wei Sun

Cu-based catalysts exhibit excellent performance in hydrogenation reactions. However, the poor stability of Cu catalysts under high temperatures has restricted their practical applications. The preparation of stable Cu catalysts supported by SiO 2 with strong metal–support interaction (SMSI) has thus aroused great interest due to the high abundance, low toxicity, feasible processability, and low cost of SiO 2 . The challenge in the construction of such SMSI remains to be the inertness of SiO 2 . Herein, a simple and scalable method is developed to prepare 2D silica (2DSiO 2 ) supported Cu catalysts with SMSI by carefully manipulating the topological exfoliation of CaSi 2 with CuCl 2 and thereafter calcination. The prepared Cu-2DSiO 2 catalysts with the unique encapsulated Cu nanoparticles exhibit excellent activity and long-term stability in high-temperature CO 2 hydrogenation reactions. This feasible and low-cost solution for stabilizing Cu catalysts might shed light on their realistic applications.

Decomplexation Performance of Cu–EDTA and Parameter Optimization by Three-Dimensional Electro-Fenton

Ma Yameng,Huang Xiao,Han Qi,Yu Jianghua,Yu Fengjiao,Zhu Jia

The strong stability of Cu–ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (Cu–EDTA) results in the low decomplexation efficiency by the traditional Fenton process. For breaking this limitation, a three-dimensional electro-Fenton (3D-EF) system was constructed to study the decomplexation of Cu–EDTA at different pH, and the effects of Fe2+ concentration, particle electrode dosage, current density, and coexisting ions on decomplexation performance were investigated. The results showed that 3D-EF exhibited high pollutant removal efficiency in a wide pH range compared with the traditional electro-Fenton process. The optimal conditions for the removal of Cu–EDTA were as follows: the pH was 7, Fe2+ was 1 mmol L−1, granular activated carbon was 2 g L−1, and current density was 10 mA cm−2, and the optimum Cu–EDTA removal efficiency reached 90.95%. In addition, the presence of Cl− slightly improved the decomplexation efficiency, whereas NO3− and HPO42− inhibited the removal of Cu–EDTA. The kinetics of Cu–EDTA decomplexation in all experimental groups followed the first-order kinetic equation.

Unraveling the roles of Cu0 and Cu+ in CuZnAl catalyst for CO hydrogenation to higher alcohols

Kejing Wang,Yongjun Liu,Zhiwen Li,Nan Cui,Lei Sun,Wei Huang

The valence states of Cu site are regarded as an important factor affecting the performance of syngas to higher alcohols (C 2+ OH). Regrettably, the role of Cu 0 and Cu + in CO hydrogenation to higher alcohols remains controversial due to the complexity of the reaction. In this study, Cu 0 and Cu 2 O powders are directly added as the precursors to adjust the ratios of Cu + /(Cu 0 +Cu + ) and Cu particle sizes in CuZnAl catalysts by a complete liquid-phase (CLP) technology. The CAT-Cu 0 catalyst with higher Cu 0 content shows the highest CO conversion (>15%) ascribing to the biggest S Cu , but is also accompanied by the highest CO 2 selectivity (>40%), while the CAT-Cu + catalysts with higher Cu + content displays relative better C 2+ OH selectivity (>60%) and stability due to a higher probability of CO insertion. In-situ DRIFTS experiments reveal that a synergy between larger Cu particle sizes (30~40 nm) and surface Cu + sites, in which larger Cu sizes enhances the probability of bridge CO adsorption, thereby favoring the C–O bond dissociation for CH x formation. Meanwhile, Cu + active sites provide a higher probability for CO/CHO insertion to form CH 3 CHO*/CH 2 CO* intermediates. This study further deepens our understanding of the critical controlling factors for highly selective synthesis of C 2+ OH from syngas over Cu-based catalysts.

Nano-spatially confined Pd–Cu bimetals in porous N-doped carbon as an electrocatalyst for selective denitrification

Tianhang Gu,Wei Teng,Nan Bai,Zehan Chen,Jianwei Fan,Wei-xian Zhang,Dongyuan Zhao

Bimetals have attracted considerable attention as electrocatalysts towards selective reduction of nitrate to benign dinitrogen. Design of highly efficient and stable bimetallic catalysts by taking the effects of both active sites increasing and synergistic composition into account is of paramount importance but still a grand challenge. Herein we report novel bimetallic Pd–Cu nanoparticles (NPs) incorporated in porous N-doped carbon octahedra prepared by a spatial confinement strategy of in situ pyrolysis of metal–organic frameworks with the assistance of polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) as electrocatalysts achieving targeted denitrification. Pd–Cu NPs exhibit superior dispersity with a N-doped matrix and are strongly dependent on the variation of PVP, Pd precursor and pyrolysis temperature. The material shows high efficiency (∼97.1%) for the reduction of nitrate from 100 to 2.9 mg NO3−-N L−1 (well below drinking water standards of 10 mg NO3−-N L−1), and especially the selectivity over 83% for benign N2 at neutral pH within 24 h. Encapsulated and well-dispersed Pd–Cu NPs and doped N in the carbonaceous matrix synergistically enhance the interfacial electron transfer for transformation of NO3−-N(V). Porous structures endow the catalyst with outstanding stability after eight cycles and over a wide pH of 4–10. More importantly, the nanocatalyst performs well with real contaminated water (selectivity of 91% for nitrogen) in laboratory batch reactors. This nanocatalyst shows promise in wastewater treatment and environmental remediation due to the spatial confinement strategy and introduction of heterogeneous atoms.

Efficient removal of radioactive iodide by three-dimensional Cu@Cu2O: An adsorption and electrocatalytic oxidation coupling process

Han Jiao,Yaru Li,Kaihua Gao,Jingyu Zhao,Chun Wang,Mingcheng Li,Ping Na

Electrochemical promotion technology, an environmentally friendly and facile strategy, is becoming increasingly attractive to researchers. In this work, a novel Cu@Cu 2 O foam block composite material was constructed through a one-step hydrothermal method. The product was then employed as the anode and electrified to catalyse removal of radioactive iodide ions (I − ) in the liquid phase. The removal rate of I − sharply increased to 96.65 % under electrification, which is a 4.5-fold increase over that without electrification. The current strength had an impact on this result, and the removal was still relatively high in a wide range of pH values. The composite material had good reusability and could maintain good performance after simple separation. Therefore, based on X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis, we proposed a mechanism of electrochemical oxidation and adsorption coupling for the iodine removal. As Cu@Cu 2 O adsorbed I − to form CuI, the current flow oxidised I − to I 2 , which finally was adsorbed by the formed CuI. Therefore, the current provides services of accelerating I − movement and oxidation. This coupling model of electrocatalytic oxidation and adsorption provides us with a new research method to remove iodide from water.

Fe-Cu bimetallic oxide encapsulated in ZSM-5 for efficient heterogeneous Fenton-like degradation of methylene blue

Jiaze Chen,Huijie Xie,Yusen Chen,Dong Guo,Binjie Li,Xuanxuan Sun,Volodymyr Turkevych,Caixia Li,Dehong Chen,Lei Wang,Bin Li

Fenton-like degradation based on iron catalyst have been developed to remove organic pollutants from wastewater. However, iron-based catalysts still face challenges of poor accessibility and stability of active sites. Here, we report a facile and green method for the preparation of Fe x Cu (1-x) @HZSM-5 catalyst using ethylenediamine as an organic ligand to stabilize metal species via a combination of solid-state grinding and steam-assisted crystallization methods without organic templates. Due to the confinement of zeolite ZSM-5 framework and synergistic effect of Fe and Cu bimetals, the optimized Fe 0.8 Cu 0.2 @HZSM-5 catalyst exhibits excellent activity and reusability in the Fenton-like degradation of methylene blue at the neutral condition. Our strategy for fabricating bimetal@zeolite can bring about new thoughts for the preparation of iron-based catalyst with high efficiency for Fenton-like degradation.

Cu+-based composite metal oxides enable the efficient [4+2] annulation reactions between tertiary anilines and tetrahydrofuran

Weiyou Zhou,Jiayin Huang,Anwei Wang,Jia Cui,Jie Yao,Tao Hou,Shuliang Ji,Mingyang He,Zhonghua Sun

An efficient heterogeneous catalytic system for the [4 + 2] annulation reactions between tertiary anilines and tetrahydrofuran has been developed based on CuCoFe layered double oxide in the study. Cu + species was believed to play the crucial role in the catalytic transformation, and synergistic effect between Cu and CoFe species was observed in the reaction. Various tertiary anilines could be tolerated by the present catalytic system. A series of control experiments were conducted to determine the reaction intermediates. A distinctive reaction mechanism has been described for the annulation reaction based on these results and kinetic isotopic effects experiments.

Degradation of rhodamine B by fenton-like system with Fe-Cu/HZSM-5 catalyst

Jun-Feng Lu,Huan Wang,Yi Zhou,Xue-Ying Mao,Xiao-Qian Feng,Shuang Wang,Yong-Hua Zhao

Background Rhodamine B (RhB) poses a significant threat to aquatic ecosystems. While Fenton oxidation process is promising approach for RhB degradation, the conventional Fenton reaction has the narrow pH range and poor reusability. To overcome these, this study developed Fenton-like system with Fe-Cu/HZSM-5 catalyst for effective RhB degradation. Methods A series of Fe x Cu 5-x /HZSM-5 catalysts (x represents the molar ratio of Fe to Cu) were prepared by impregnation. These catalysts were integrated with H 2 O 2 to construct Fenton-like system for the degradation of RhB. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, NH 3 -TPD, XPS, FT-IR, and N 2 adsorption-desorption at low temperature techniques. Significant findings Among the tested catalysts, Fe 3 Cu 2 /HZSM-5 exhibited optimal performance, achieving near-complete RhB degradation (∼100%) under the condition of 45 °C, 5.3 mM/L H 2 O 2 , 3.0 g/L catalyst dosage, and broad pH range (2–5). Mechanistic studies confirmed that hydroxyl radicals (·OH) were the primary oxidants responsible for RhB degradation in Fenton-like system. Under ·OH attacking, RhB underwent a series of reactions such as N-deethylation and disruption of the conjugated structure and was eventually mineralized into CO 2 and H 2 O. Overall, a novel Fe-Cu/HZSM-5 catalyst was developed to address the limitations of the traditional Fenton reaction, providing valuable insights for future research in this field.

Kinetics and equilibrium isotherms of adsorption of Pb(II) and Cu(II) onto raw and arginine-modified montmorillonite

Yuting Chu,Muhammad Asim Khan,Fengyun Wang,Mingzhu Xia,Wu Lei,Sidi Zhu

Arg-Mt, was fabricated by modifying sodium montmorillonite (Na-Mt) with Arginine monohydrochloride (Arg salt), to adsorb Pb(II) and Cu(II) in aqueous solution. The X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrum, thermal analysis (TG/DTG), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and Scanning electron microscope (SEM) were employed to investigate the properties of Na-Mt and Arg-Mt. The effects of the amount of modifier, pH value, the initial concentration of M(II), temperature and contact time were tested in a single adsorption system. The isotherm model was well matched with the Langmuir curve and the kinetic adsorption fitted well with the pseudo-second-order rate equation. The saturated adsorption of Pb(II) and Cu(II) by Arg-Mt were 124.69 and 29.15 mg/g, respectively, which were higher than that of Na-Mt (89.08 and 23.93 mg/g). The thermodynamic equation indicated that the adsorption process was spontaneous, endothermic, and the randomness of the samples changed a little after adsorption. The adsorption capacity of heavy metal ions in the binary co-adsorption system was poor than single adsorption system. Furthermore, the adsorbed M(II) onto Arg-Mt can hardly be dissolved under weak acidic condition (pH > 4) according to the desorption experiments. High-efficiency and low-cost make Arg-Mt to be used in the removal of heavy ions in aqueous solution.

Versatile hierarchical Cu/Fe3O4 nanocatalysts for efficient degradation of organic dyes prepared by a facile, controllable hydrothermal method

Zhenzhen Wang,Shangru Zhai,Jialing Lv,Haixin Qi,Wei Zheng,Bin Zhai,Qingda An

A novel monodispersed hierarchical nanocomposite catalyst of Cu/Fe3O4 was successfully synthesized through a short-time (just 4 h), facile, eco-friendly one-pot hydrothermal method. The as-prepared Cu/Fe3O4 nanocomposite was well characterized and the results showed that the products were spherical in morphology with diameters of about 100 nm. The BET surface area of the nanospheres was 37.16 m2 g−1, indicating that the product showed a porous character, and the major BJH pore size was 3.73 nm. The saturated magnetization of the Cu/Fe3O4 nanospheres was 48.0 emu g−1, which facilitated their separation and recovery with the aid of an external magnet. In addition, the influences of experimental parameters such as the dosage of trisodium citrate dehydrate (Na3Cit) and urea as well as reaction duration time were investigated in detail to fully elucidate the formation mechanism. More charmingly, the Cu/Fe3O4 nanocomposites exhibited excellent catalytic activity towards the reduction of hazardous organic dyes (4-nitrophenol, 4-NP; congo red, CR; methylene blue, MB) in aqueous media in the presence of NaBH4 with very fast kinetics and good stability. The relationship between the Cu precursor addition amount and catalytic ability was also established. Considering the simplicity of the operation procedure, short time, low cost as well as easy recycling of the catalyst, this preparation protocol may shed light on the fabrication of other metal oxide materials; and hopefully, this hierarchical nanocomposite may find potential applications in other domains like heavy metal removal or antibacterial applications.
