A Fe 3 O 4 -VB 2 @CeO 2 ternary nanozyme was designed for METH detection. • Selective recognition of METH over HER/MOR via –NH and electrostatic attraction. • The sensor shows a low LOD of 3.4 ng mL −1 and a wide linear range. • It enables on-site colorimetric detection in serum with good specificity. Selective detection of methamphetamine (METH) over other illicit drugs is essential for forensic analysis and clinical screening, yet conventional methods are expensive, complex, and unsuited for on-site use. Herein, we developed a colorimetric platform based on a Fe 3 O 4 -VB 2 @CeO 2 ternary composite nanozyme for specific METH recognition. The nanozyme was synthesized via a two-step solvothermal method, where Fe 3 O 4 acts as the magnetic core, riboflavin (VB 2 ) serves as an electron mediator, and CeO 2 provides abundant catalytic active sites. Mechanistic studies (FT-IR, XPS, Zeta potential) suggest that METH is adsorbed onto the nanozyme surface through a combination of electrostatic interactions and other non-covalent forces, potentially including hydrogen bonding and π–π stacking interactions. This adsorption appears to modulate the surface chemistry and interfacial electron transfer dynamics, which may contribute to the suppressed generation of hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and the reduced peroxidase (POD)-like activity of the nanozyme. Under optimized conditions, the colorimetric signal shows an excellent linear relationship with the logarithm of METH concentration from 0.005 to 12 μg/mL, with a detection limit of 3.4 ng/mL. The sensor exhibits high specificity for METH, with negligible response to heroin (HER) or morphine (MOR), and shows negligible interference from various metal ions, amino acids, metabolites, and serum components. This work presents a visual strategy for on-site rapid METH detection and offers a plausible mechanistic interpretation of nanozyme inhibition based on indirect evidence. In Fenton-like processes, achieving rapid and efficient redox cycling of metal active centers remains a challenge. This study presents an innovative strategy that harnesses the mechanical energy of water flow to drive the redox cycling of metal active centers. Herein, Fe 3 O 4 /MoS 2 heterojunction with interfacial Mo-S-Fe bridge bonds was constructed via a one-step hydrothermal method. Under the stimulation induced by water-flow mechanical, the piezoelectric effect of MoS 2 generates charge carriers, which are rapidly directed to Fe active sites through the Mo-S-Fe bonds. This process significantly accelerates the Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle and enhances H 2 O 2 activation, achieving 93.8% removal of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) within 60 min under water flow stimulation. The composite exhibits robust performance across a broad pH range (3.0-10.7) and in the presence of humic acid (HA) and coexisting anions, demonstrating its strong environmental adaptability. Spectroscopic evidence confirmed the formation of Mo-S-Fe bonds at the heterojunction interface. Mechanistic studies further revealed that the structure improves charge separation, promotes rapid electron transfer from MoS 2 to Fe sites, and strengthens H 2 O 2 adsorption, thereby synergistically boosting reactive oxygen species (ROSs) generation and the overall catalytic efficiency. This study proposes an innovative strategy that exploits mechanical forces generated by water flow to drive rapid redox cycling of active metal centers in Fenton-like reactions.

Biochar-induced interfacial defects modulate electronic structure of Mn Co spinel. • Complete IBU was removed in 5 min with an apparent reaction rate of 1.08 min −1 . • Interfacial structural defects accelerated redox cycles for boosted 1 O 2 generation. • The micropollutant was removed through a 1 O 2 dominated non-radical pathway. Spinel-based transition metal oxides are potential activators for peroxymonosulfate-based advanced oxidation processes (PMS-AOPs) in water purification, yet their sluggish redox cycling, stemming from poor conductivity, remains a critical limitation. In this work, a distiller's grain-derived porous biochar (BC)-decorated Mn Co spinel nanosheet catalyst (MnCoO x @BC) is developed and applied for PMS activation. The catalyst exhibits high efficacy in degrading ibuprofen (IBU), achieving complete removal within 5 min with an apparent reaction rate constant of 1.08 min −1 ([IBU] = 10 mg L −1 , [catalyst] = 200 mg L −1 , [PMS] = 200 mg L −1 ), which is 18 and 15 times for pristine BC and unsupported MnCoO x , respectively. Characterization and DFT calculation results indicate that the introduction of biochar could improve the conductivity and induce the formation of abundant oxygen defects, which accelerate the redox cycles of Co (III)/Co (II) and Mn (IV)/Mn (III) catalytic centers. This interfacial configuration facilitates the conversion of PMS into peroxysulfate radical (SO 5 • − ) and superoxide radical (O 2 • − ) species, and finally towards singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), establishing a non-radical dominant pathway where 1 O 2 accounts for over 95% of the reactive species contribution. This work presents an effective strategy for developing defect-controlled catalytic interfaces to modulate the d-band center of metal sites and steer the interfacial electron transfer pathway, offering profound insights into non-radical-dominated mechanisms for the degradation of emerging micropollutants. A CoMn 2 O 4 /MXene hybrid catalyst was rationally constructed to overcome the sluggish redox kinetics and inefficient interfacial electron transfer. • MXene functions not only as a conductive scaffold but also as an interfacial electronic modulator. • MXene-mediated electronic coupling promotes high-valent metal-oxo species as the dominant reactive intermediates. • Toxicity evaluation confirmed substantially reduced ecotoxicity of the treated BPA-containing water. Selective nonradical oxidation via high-valent metal-oxo (HVMO) species represents a promising yet mechanistically underexplored pathway for eliminating emerging contaminants. Here, a CoMn 2 O 4 /MXene (CMM) hybrid catalyst was rationally constructed to overcome the sluggish redox kinetics and inefficient interfacial electron transfer, which constrain HVMO species generation in spinel oxide/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) systems. MXene acts as both a conductive scaffold and interfacial electronic modulator, accelerating CoMn 2 O 4 -PMS charge transfer and steering PMS activation toward selective nonradical oxidation. The optimized CMM catalyst achieves complete bisphenol A removal within 5 min ( k = 0.98 min −1 ), nearly double the rate of pristine CoMn 2 O 4 . In addition, this system exhibited broad pollutant degradation, high PMS utilization efficiency, wide pH adaptability, and robust tolerance to complex water matrices. Combined experimental and theoretical analyses reveal that MXene-mediated electronic coupling promotes HVMO species as the dominant reactive intermediates. Toxicity evaluation using three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix (3D-EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy and mung bean germination assays confirmed substantially reduced ecotoxicity of the treated BPA-containing water. Continuous flow operation further demonstrated near-complete BPA removal over 6 h, underscoring practical scalability. This work highlights interfacial electronic regulation as an effective strategy for engineering HVMO-mediated routes in advanced water purification. Photocatalysts based on metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have garnered significant interest for enhanced advanced oxidation processes; yet, inadequate charge separation and limited availability of redox-active sites continue to impede their catalytic performance. A hierarchical Co-MOF/NiCu-MOF heterostructure was synthesised using an in-situ MOF-on-MOF growth strategy and employed for visible-light-assisted activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to effectively degrade pharmaceutical contaminants. The integration of Co-MOF with bimetallic NiCu-MOF resulted in an interfacially linked framework exhibiting improved visible-light absorption, hierarchical structure, plentiful Co/Ni/Cu redox centers, and expedited interfacial charge transfer. The Co-MOF/NiCu-MOF demonstrated significantly enhanced catalytic activity relative to individual Co-MOF, Ni-MOF, Cu-MOF, and NiCu-MOF. Under optimized conditions, the Co-MOF/NiCu-MOF/PMS/visible-light system attained 98.2% ciprofloxacin (CIP) degradation with a pseudo-first-order rate constant of 0.1312 min −1 . The catalytic activity was significantly influenced by PMS dosage, catalyst loading, pH, CIP concentration, interfering species, and water matrix. The system exhibited superior performance in both tap water and simulated wastewater, indicating strong practical application. Radical quenching experiments and EPR analysis established that OH • was the predominant oxidative species, along with the minor contribution of SO 4 • ‾ and 1 O 2 to the degradation process. Mass Spectrometry analysis indicated that the CIP underwent degradation via sequential hydroxylation, oxidation, side-chain cleavage, ring-opening, and mineralisation processes. The catalyst maintained 96.3% degradation efficiency after five cycles with minimal metal leaching, indicating exceptional stability and reusability. This study emphasises MOF-on-MOF interfacial engineering as a proficient approach for developing effective PMS activators for the remediation of pharmaceutical wastewater.

During long-term operation, drinking water distribution pipelines develop complex inner-wall deposits composed of corrosion scale, sediments, and biofilm, which can serve as reservoirs and secondary sources of organic micropollutants and heavy metals. Conventional pipe cleaning technologies mainly rely on physical scouring to remove deposits, but offer limited capacity to control micropollutant release during cleaning. Here, a peroxymonosulfate/citric acid (PMS/CA) modified ice slurry was developed to integrate physical cleaning with in situ organic contaminant degradation and heavy metal removal. Results showed that CA complexed with iron species to maintain soluble Fe(II) in the reaction system and accelerate Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox cycling, thereby enabling continuous PMS activation and sustained reactive oxygen species generation. Under optimized conditions, the modified ice slurry achieved 90.88% degradation of carbamazepine within 10 min, accompanied by an overall reduction in predicted product toxicity. Meanwhile, CA enhanced the removal of Cr(VI) and Cd(II) from pipe scale matrices by promoting solubilization, which also lowered the risk of rerelease during subsequent stagnation. Validation under near realistic operating conditions further demonstrated the practical applicability of the modified ice slurry for pipeline cleaning. Life cycle assessment indicated that PMS/CA modified ice slurry imposed the lowest environmental impacts across most categories at an equivalent pollutant removal level among the compared oxidation and cleaning technologies. This study provides an effective and environmentally pipe cleaning strategy for coordinated deposit removal and micropollutant control in drinking water distribution systems.

Proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) at the solid–liquid
interface is crucial for addressing the efficiency reduction of zerovalent
iron (ZVI) materials in environmental pollution control, which stems
from hindered iron cycling. In this study, we report a tannic acid-modified
ZVI (TA-ZVI) that accelerates PCET by engineering an interfacial hydrogen-bonding
network at the outer Helmholtz plane (OHP). Grafting ortho-phenolic
hydroxyl groups onto ZVI reconstructs the interfacial water network,
increases the fraction of weakly bound/free water, and enhances interfacial
solvation/polarization relaxation, thereby lowering the kinetic barrier
for PCET and promoting the generation and utilization of H*. The H*
is subsequently delivered through the interfacial hydrogen-bonding
network via a thermodynamically favorable Grotthuss-like pathway to
the Fe(III) sites, thereby accelerating the iron cycle and enhancing
the activity of the surface-bound Fe(II)-mediated 2e – ORR-Fenton reaction. Mechanistic investigations using phenolic analogues
identify that ortho-phenolic hydroxyl groups are uniquely effective
relative to para-/meta-configurations, owing to the formation of bidentate
hydrogen bonds that confine and stabilize H*. Using sulfamethazine
(SMT) as a model contaminant, TA-ZVI achieves 85% removal, substantially
outperforming pristine ZVI, which removes only 19.8%. TA-ZVI also
maintains effective and continuous SMT removal in real wastewater
matrices and sustains stable operation for 1000 min in a continuous-flow
membrane reactor. This work establishes dynamic hydrogen-bond-network
engineering as a molecular strategy for regulating interfacial PCET
and enhancing ZVI-based oxidative remediation.

A Cu-MOF@In-MOF heterojunction was synthesized via in-situ solvothermal growth. • Cu-MOF@In-MOF attained 99% carbamazepine removal under Vis-light irradiation. • Synergistic adsorption-photocatalysis improved CBZ removal from water. • Cu-MOF@In-MOF exhibited exceptional stability during five successive cycles. The fabrication of metal−organic frameworks (MOFs) into MOF-on-MOF heterostructures is a promising method to improve their performance across diverse applications. This study presents an organized fabrication of Cu-MOF (BUT-206-Cu) on In-MOF (BUT-205) for the elimination of carbamazepine (CBZ) by the combined effect of adsorption and photocatalytic degradation. BUT-205 was prepared by a solvothermal technique and acted as a host for the in-situ progression of BUT-206-Cu, resulting in a heterostructure BUT-206-Cu@BUT-205. The BUT-206-Cu@BUT-205 exhibited a remarkable efficiency in CBZ removal, achieving a total elimination rate of 99% and adsorption capacity of 86 mg/g, surpassing the performance of pristine MOFs. The pH impact and initial carbamazepine concentration on removal efficacy was systematically investigated. Radical scavenging and EPR investigations revealed that h + and OH • radicals are the key species involved in the degradation process. The degradation mechanism of CBZ confirmed ring cleavage, hydroxylation and carboxylation as the primary pathways. Kinetic analyses indicated that adsorption and degradation processess confirmed pseudo-second-order and pseudo-first-order models, respectively. The values of the thermodynamic variables (ΔG ads , ΔH ads , ΔS ads ) indicated that adsorption is physical, spontaneous, and exothermic in nature, resulting in increased randomness within the system. Furthermore, the BUT-206-Cu@BUT-205 demonstrate exceptional stability and reusability across five reusing cycles. Download: Download high-res image (111KB) Download: Download full-size image

Waste sericin was valorized into Fe 3 O 4 / N -doped porous biochar Fenton-like catalyst. • Molecular coordination enabled uniform dispersion of active Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles. • 0.1Fe-NC degraded 99.3% AO-7 with kobs of 0.266 min −1 via PMS activation. • Multiple ROS including Fe(IV)=O and 1 O 2 dominated the reaction. • Packed-bed continuous-flow operation kept >98% AO-7 removal for 720 min. Developing sustainable catalysts from waste biomass for advanced oxidation processes is highly desirable for wastewater treatment. Herein, a waste-to-resource strategy was proposed to upcycle silk-industry waste sericin into Fe 3 O 4 -anchored N -doped porous biochar Fenton-like catalysts (Fe-NC) for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. Distinct from conventional biomass-derived Fe/carbon catalysts that often require external nitrogen dopants or post-loading of metal species, sericin served simultaneously as a carbon source, intrinsic nitrogen precursor, and Fe 3+ -binding biopolymer, enabling the coordination-assisted formation of Fe 3 O 4 / N -doped carbon interfacial active sites after controlled pyrolysis. The optimized 0.1Fe-NC possessed a high specific surface area of 477.9 m 2 g −1 and uniformly dispersed Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles, enabling rapid removal of Acid Orange 7 (AO-7) over a wide pH range of 4–11. Nearly complete degradation of AO-7 (99.3%) was achieved within 30 min, with a pseudo-first-order rate constant ( k obs ) of 0.266 min −1 . Mechanistic investigations revealed that multiple reactive oxygen species, including Fe(IV)=O, SO 4 -, OH, and 1 O 2 , jointly contributed to pollutant degradation. In addition, the catalyst exhibited excellent magnetic recoverability and stability, maintaining 89.7% removal efficiency after five cycles. Continuous-flow experiments further demonstrated stable performance (>98% removal for 720 min), highlighting its practical applicability. This work provides a sustainable strategy for converting protein-rich sericin waste into efficient Fe-based biochar catalysts and offers insights into designing biomass-derived PMS activation systems with integrated heteroatom doping, metal anchoring, and interfacial electron-transfer regulation. A carbothermal-driven interfacial decoupling strategy was developed. • Robust degradation of heterogeneous NPS was achieved across a wide pH range. • Carbon-mineral domains decoupled interaction sites and pathway for disparate NPS. • A “dual-site adsorption-single-engine catalysis” mechanism was established. • Negligible metal leaching and toxicity ensure long-term environmental safety. Environmental aging induces the co-existence of heterogeneous nanoplastics with disparate surface functionalization in aquatic environments, which hamper their efficient oxidative catalytic conversion due to interfacial competition for active sites and reaction pathways. Herein, a carbothermal-driven interfacial decoupling (CDID) strategy was developed by engineering a graphene-coupled reduced vermiculite (C@rVt) photothermal catalyst. The graphene framework served as an electron donor to in-situ reduce lattice Fe 3+ in vermiculite into active Fe 2+ species, while simultaneously establishing carbon-mineral partitioned architecture. The carbon domain promoted the enrichment of hydrophobic nano-polystyrene (NPS) and facilitated molecular chain activation via localized photothermal effects. The lattice-bound Fe 2+ sites functioned as Lewis acid coordination sites to anchor amino-functionalized NPS and as redox centers that initiated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) decomposition. Benefited by the fast interface electron transfer, a robust Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ cycle was maintained across a wide pH range, leading to over 95% mixed nanoplastics catalytic oxidation and conversion at alkaline environment. This study provides a versatile paradigm for designing photothermal catalysts to treat complex multi-component plastic pollution. Niobates have emerged as promising candidates for environmental catalysis, particularly in the realm of piezocatalysis, owing to their distinctive layered architectures and robust physicochemical performance. In this study, we report the successful fabrication of A-site cation-tailored ABi 2 Nb 2 O 9 (A = Sr, Ca, and Ba) layered oxides via a molten salt strategy. Notably, the molten salt-synthesized SrBi 2 Nb 2 O 9 exhibits superior piezocatalytic performance in H 2 O 2 evolution with a yield reaching 1836.1 µmol g −1 h −1 , approximately 2.1 times higher than that of SrBi 2 Nb 2 O 9 prepared by the solid-state method. Furthermore, this material demonstrates exceptional piezocatalytic activity, degrading 98.0% of Rhodamine B within 75 min, with a reaction rate constant of 0.04966 min −1 . In addition, the catalyst shows durable stability, maintaining 97% of its original activity after four cycles. The influence of environmental factors, including solution pH and inorganic anions (Cl − and CO 3 2− ), was also systematically evaluated. This work elucidates that the synergistic integration of A-site cation engineering and molten salt synthesis effectively modulates the piezoelectric response of ABi 2 Nb 2 O 9 (A = Sr, Ca, and Ba), offering new insights and a viable pathway for the design of novel, high-performance piezocatalysts for environmental remediation. Graphical Molten salt-mediated A-site cation engineering of ABi 2 Nb 2 O 9 effectively modulates piezoelectric response, achieving superior piezocatalytic H 2 O 2 production and pollutant degradation. Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) remains a formidable challenge due to its aggressive progression and the absence of established therapeutic targets. This study engineered a multifunctional, tumor microenvironment (TME)-responsive nanoplatform MnO 2 @Man/DOX, which was designed for synergistic targeted chemotherapy and TME modulation. The platform comprises a manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ) core for redox regulation and a mannose (Man) shell for active targeting and metabolic sensitization, stabilized with bovine serum albumin and sodium dodecyl sulfate. MnO 2 @Man/DOX nanoparticles are nearly spherical (289 nm) and exhibit dual-responsiveness by efficiently depleting intracellular glutathione and catalyzing endogenous hydrogen peroxide into cytotoxic hydroxyl radicals via Fenton-like reactions. In vitro, the nanoplatform demonstrated a remarkable 8-fold reduction in IC 50 (0.52 μg/mL) compared with free doxorubicin (4.2 μg/mL) in 4T1 cells. Transcriptomic analysis suggested that MnO 2 @Man/DOX is associated with TNF signaling and apoptosis-related pathways, including extrinsic, intrinsic, and endoplasmic reticulum stress-mediated programs. In vivo evaluations in 4T1 tumor-bearing mice confirmed preferential tumor accumulation and superior growth inhibition with a high biosafety profile, including a hemolysis rate below 5% and minimal systemic toxicity. By integrating receptor-mediated targeting, redox homeostasis disruption, and chemosensitization, MnO 2 @Man/DOX offers a promising metabolism-oriented strategy for treating refractory TNBC.
