The potential of coordination polymers (CPs) as a host of integrating multiple guest species to construct a fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) nanoprobe was demonstrated. The ZnCPs built from zinc(II) and adenine was employed as a model of CPs to integrate carbon dot (CD) and phenol red (PR) for producing the FRET nanoprobe (CD/PR@ZnCPs). Benefiting from the confinement effect of ZnCPs, the integrated CD and PR can be brought in close proximity to favor the occurrence of FRET process from CD to PR, which leads to the quenching of CD fluorescence. However, the FRET process was disrupted upon the red-shift of PR absorption from 428 to 562 nm in alkaline medium, and consequently switches on the fluorescence of CD/PR@ZnCPs. Based on this finding, by utilizing urease to hydrolyze urea and mediate medium pH, a turn-on fluorescent method was established for the detection of urease activity. This fluorescent method has a linear response that covers 5 to 150 U/L urease with a detection limit of 0.74 U/L and exhibits an excellent selectivity over other enzymes. The successful determination of urease in saliva samples demonstrates the applicability of the fluorescent nanoprobe in complex biological matrix. Graphical Abstract

Synthesis of upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs)-metal halide perovskites (MHPs) heterostructure is garnered immense attentions due to their unparalleled photophysical properties. However, the obvious difference in their structural forms makes it a huge challenge. Herein, hexagonal β-NaYF 4 and hexagonal Cs 4 PbBr 6 are filtrated to construct the UCNP/MHP heterostructural luminescent material. The similarity in their crystal structures facilitate the heteroepitaxial growth of Cs 4 PbBr 6 on the surface of β-NaYF 4 NPs, leading to the formation of high-quality β-NaYF 4 :Yb,Tm/Cs 4 PbBr 6 core/shell nanocrystals (NCs). Interestingly, this heterostructure endows the core/shell NCs with typically narrow-band green emission centered at 524 nm under 980 nm excitation, which should be attributed to the Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) from Tm 3+ to Cs 4 PbBr 6 . It is noteworthy that the FRET efficiency of β-NaYF 4 :Yb,Tm/Cs 4 PbBr 6 core/shell NCs (58.33%) is much higher than that of the physically mixed sample (1.84%). In addition, the reduced defect density, lattice anchoring effect, as well as diluted ionic bonding proportion induced by the core/shell structure further increase the excellent water-resistance and thermal cycling stability of Cs 4 PbBr 6 . These findings open up a new way to construct UCNP/MHP heterostructure with better multi-code luminescence performance and stability and promote its wide optoelectronic applications.

Mixed micelle systems have gained significant attention due to their ability to integrate multifunctionality based on different copolymers. However, an understanding of chain exchange behavior in mixed micelles is limited. In this study, we reported a mixed micelle system where noncovalent cross-linking between the corona blocks enhanced micelle stability. Specifically, we utilized polystyrene-block-poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) (PS-b-PEtOx) and polystyrene-block-poly(methacrylic acid) (PS-b-PMAA) to form the mixed micelle system. Donor- and acceptor-labeled PS-b-PEtOx was employed to investigate the chain exchange kinetics using fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). The addition of PS-b-PMAA facilitated the formation of hydrogen bonds between EtOx and protonated MAA units, resulting in a noncovalent cross-linked corona. As the pH decreases, the percentage of affected PS-b-PEtOx gradually increases, while the extra energy barrier first decreases and then increases. This is mainly due to the conformational changes of PMAA chains, which cause crowding between the core and shell, and the interactions between PMAA and PEtOx, especially hydrogen bonding. This study demonstrates that the hydrogen-bonded cross-linking of the corona in the mixed micelle system can effectively control the chain exchange rate and improve micelle stability.

Rose bengal (RB) showed photocatalytic performance for cross dehydrogenative-coupling (CDC) reaction. However, single organic dye only absorbs light of specific wavelength which results a lower light utilization efficiency. In this paper, we proposed a simple and effective approach based on Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET), to improve the performance of RB through the incorporation of rhodamine 6G (Rh6G) into RB solution and constructing a binary dyes system rhodamine 6G-rose bengal (Rh6G-RB). The energy transfer efficiency and antenna effect of Rh6G-RB were up to 58% and 10.8, respectively. The synergistic effect of RB and Rh6G exhibited excellent catalytic performance under low concentration (10 −5 M). The catalytic rate constant (k d ) for Rh6G-RB reached 0.026 mol/(L·min) at 35 °C for aza-Henry reaction of tertiary amines with nitromethane, which was 2.03 and 5.52 times higher than that of single RB and Rh6G respectively. Moreover, the synergy of Rh6G and RB was also observed in Mannich reaction of N-tertiary amine derivatives with acetone , which all afforded the coupling products with good to excellent conversions. Finally, the Rh6G-RB system was also demonstrated an efficient visible light photoredox catalyst in continuous flow fashion. The research opened a new avenue and convenient for developing of binary or ternary organic dyes systems based on FRET and advance the application of these dye systems in photocatalytic organic synthesis.

Ovarian cancer (OVC), the most lethal form of all gynecological cancers, is a big threat to women’s health. Late diagnosis at the advanced stages is one of the major reasons for the ovarian cancer-related deaths. Conventionally, the up-regulated proteins CA125 (cancer antigen 125) and HE4 (human epididymis protein 4) are used as biomarkers to diagnose the OVC malignancies. The lack of sensitivity/specificity and the false-positive results create complexity in the diagnostic process. With specificity over 90 %, HE4 is suitable for diagnosing ovarian cancer. Herein, we have developed an ultrasensitive all-graphene quantum dot (GQD) Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) probe for the ratiometric detection of HE4 biomarker. A set of two GQD samples were solvothermally prepared and then analyzed by the morphological, structural, and photophysical characterization. One GQD sample exhibited a strong green emission, peaked at around 515 nm, while the other GQD sample displayed a strong red emission with maximum at around 615 nm. The good spectral overlap between the emission and excitation spectra of the green and red GQDs, respectively, all allowed us to consider them for the design of FRET-based probe. The green and red-emitting GQDs were conjugated with HE4 antibody and used as donor and acceptor, respectively for the ratiometric sensing of HE4 ovarian cancer biomarker. The all GQD FRET probe was able to detect as low as 4.8 pM, along with a large dynamic detection range up to 300 nM. The selectivity and interference effect of the developed FRET probe was also investigated against different protein combinations.

HighlightsA FRET system (FITC-PtOEP) was integrated into a photonic crystal film for oxygen sensing.Imidazole modification boosted fluorescence intensity by 52.4% under 100% O2atmosphere.Imidazole also provided excellent photostability with a 99.77% fluorescence retention rate.Fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) was implemented in a photonic crystal-structured oxygen sensing film by incorporating fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) with platinum octaethylporphyrin (PtOEP). The highest Stern-Volmer quenching constant (KSV= 20.20 ± 0.25) and maximum quenching ratio (21.81 ± 0.21) were achieved at a PtOEP:FITC molar ratio of 1:1. Compared to the control, theKSVand maximum quenching ratio increased by 56.8% and 48.4%, respectively. Additionally, imidazole was introduced into the oxygen-sensing film via a casting method. The results demonstrated that imidazole effectively modulates the energy transfer efficiency between oxygen molecules and PtOEP. Under 20% O2and 100% O2atmospheres, the fluorescence intensity of the imidazole-modified film increased by 18.4% and 52.4%, respectively. Furthermore, imidazole provided excellent protection for PtOEP, yielding a fluorescence retention rate of 99.77% ± 0.18%.

Background Aflatoxin M 1 (AFM 1 ), a highly toxic hydroxylated metabolite of aflatoxin B 1 , is a major contaminant of concern in milk and dairy products, posing significant risks to food safety and public health. Since AFM 1 contamination is closely associated with feed quality, storage conditions, climatic factors, and farm management, reliable AFM 1 detection is important for supporting quality control and safety assessment of dairy products. However, the determination of trace AFM 1 in dairy matrices remains challenging, as complex matrix components may compromise analyte recognition specificity and signal readout. Accordingly, the development of a rapid, sensitive, and matrix-tolerant analytical method is highly desirable for practical AFM 1 monitoring. Results Herein, we developed an integrated analytical strategy combining nanofiber-packed solid-phase extraction (PFSPE) with an aptamer-mediated fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) assay for AFM 1 detection. Four types of polystyrene-polyvinylpyrrolidone (PS-PVP) nanofibers containing different amounts of montmorillonite (MMT) were fabricated by electrospinning and used as sorbents for the PFSPE of AFM 1 . The FRET sensing system was tailored for AFM 1 recognition and enabled rapid signal transduction via target-induced changes in energy transfer efficiency. Both the PFSPE and the FRET-based assay contribute to rapid and accurate AFM 1 determination. Under optimized conditions, the proposed method exhibited satisfactory linearity, recoveries (89.5-95.8%), precisions (RSDs ≤7.4%), and a limit of detection of 0.16 μg/kg. Moreover, the method was successfully applied to the detection of AFM 1 in real milk samples. Significance This work provides an effective analytical strategy for AFM 1 detection by integrating electrospun nanofiber-assisted matrix cleanup and target enrichment with an aptamer-mediated FRET assay, thereby improving the reliability of fluorescence analysis in complex milk matrices and providing a practical platform for rapid screening and preliminary monitoring of AFM 1 contamination in dairy products.

Excessive levels of penicillin (PAT) in fruit juice pose significant risks to food safety and human health. In this study, a ratiometric fluorescence sensor with on-site visualization detection capability had been developed for PAT detection based on Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) in this study. This strategy utilized MIL-101(Cr) with a wide absorption peak as the energy acceptor, while nitrogen/sulfur-doped graphene quantum dots (N,S-GQDs) conjugated with PAT aptamer with stable blue fluorescence serves as the energy donor, triggering the FRET effect and quenching the blue fluorescence. When exposed to PAT, the aptamer preferentially binded to PAT, separating the donor and acceptor, thereby interrupting the FRET effect and recovering the blue fluorescence. Assisted by the red internal reference fluorescence of gold clusters (AuNCs), the fluorescence changes were observed from red to blue with the concentration range of 0.01–300 ng/mL of PAT and a low limit of detection at 3.29 pg/mL. More importantly, a portable detection device integrated with smartphone was designed for on-site visual PAT detection with satisfactory results. This strategy could provide new opportunities for on-site qualitative and quantitative detection of PAT in actual foods.

For various physiopathological processes, ferroptosis is a unique form of regulatory cell death and has been confirmed to be closely related to intracellular viscosity fluctuations. The dysfunction of lysosome has been considered as one of the main causes of ferroptosis. For further understanding the occurrence and development of ferroptosis, it is of great significance to reveal the viscosity fluctuations of lysosome during ferroptosis. However, it is still lack of self-calibrating ratiometric probe with high accuracy and precision for effectively tracking the viscosity changes in lysosome during ferroptosis. In this work, a ratiometric fluorescent sensor based on the rhodol decorated carbon dots (m-CDs-Rho) was developed to track viscosity changes in lysosome during ferroptosis. The great capacity for targeting lysosome may be ascribed to the rich amino groups on the surface of m-CDs-Rho. The m-CDs-Rho nanosensor exhibits a sensitive linear response in the viscosity range of 6.33–718 cP with the advantages of high selectivity and remarkable photostability. The enhanced Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) efficiency (increase from 5.4 % in PBS to 23.4 % in 90 % glycerol) and restricted motions of Rho are responsible for the ratiometric fluorescence response toward viscosity. Moreover, the well-separated fluorescence emission makes the developed nanosensor be suitable for high resolution bioimaging of the lysosomal viscosity. The cell imaging results suggest that m-CDs-Rho mainly distributed in lysosome, and the change of viscosity in the ferroptosis model are visualized successfully.

Although the salt-adjusted properties of nanomaterials have been extensively used for colorimetric assays of all kinds of analytes, their applications in the design of fluorescence sensor are very limited. Herein, a novel fluorescence aptasensor was developed for the sensitive determination of Bisphenol S (BPS) by the salt-adjusted fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between the zero-dimensional emitter (CQDs) and the two-dimensional absorber (MoS 2 nanosheets) and the roles of specific discrimination and protective effect of anti-BPS aptamer to layered MoS 2 . It is shown that layered MoS 2 can serve as a good fluorescent quencher towards carbon dots with decent quenching efficiency. Importantly, the established fluorescent method achieved satisfactory results for the determination of BPS with a good linear correlation from 0.05 μM to 2 μM and a detection limit of 2 nM. It is expected that this method may offer a new direction for the application of the phenomenon of salt-assisted aggregation of nanomaterials in designing high-performance fluorescent biosensors.

Mycotoxins posit serious threats to human and animal health, and numerous efforts have been performed to detect the multiple toxins by a single diagnostic approach. To best of our knowledge, for the first time, we synthesized an aptamer induced “turn on” fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) biosensor using dual-color gold nanoclusters (AuNCs), l-proline, and BSA synthesized AuNCs (Lp-AuNCs and BSA-AuNCs), with WS2 nanosheet for simultaneous recognition of aflatoxinB1 (AFB1) and zearalenone (ZEN) by single excitation. Here, AFB1 aptamer stabilized blue-emitting AuNCs (AFB1-apt-Lp-AuNCs) (at 442 nm) and ZEN aptamer functionalized with red-colored AuNCs (ZEN-apt-BSA-AuNCs) (at 650 nm) were employed as an energy donor and WS2 nanosheet as a fluorescence quencher. With the addition of AFB1 and ZEN, the change in fluorescence intensity (F.I) was recorded at 442 and 650 nm and can be used for simultaneous recognition with a detection limit of 0.34 pg mL–1 (R2 = 0.9931) and 0.53 pg mL–1 (R2 = 0.9934), respectively. Most importantly, the semiquantitative determination of AFB1 and ZEN can also be realized through photovisualization. The current approach paves a new way to develop sensitive, selective, and convenient metal nanocluster-based fluorescent “switch-on” probes with potential applications in multipurpose biosensing.

Room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials with multicolor afterglow emission have important application potential in multicolor display and anti-counterfeiting. However, the preparation of polymer-based multicolor RTP materials still faces challenges. In this work, we prepare a kind of ultralong RTP materials by facilely doping phthalimide (Pth) into poly (acrylic acid) (PAA) matrices based on the hydrogen-bonding interaction. Attributed to the wide phosphorescence emission band of PAA-Pth, the ternary doping systems are constructed by using PAA-Pth as donors and commercially available fluorescent dyes rhodamine B (RhB) or fluorescein (FL) as acceptors, which display multicolor afterglow from cyan to red and green through efficient phosphorescence Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET). More impressively, the quaternary doping systems PAA-Pth-RhB-FL with different molar ratios of FL exhibit tunable multicolor afterglow, including nearly white afterglow emission. Due to the different FRET efficiency of PAA-based multicolor RTP materials at different excitation wavelengths, they are successfully applied in color information encryption .
