The urgent demand for stable and highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction/evolution reactions (ORR/OER) is pivotal in advancing energy conversion and storage technologies. Herein, we introduce a metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived bifunctional electrocatalyst Fe3Co-NC@900, featuring synergistically coupled dual single-atom sites (Fe/Co–Nx) and core–shell Co3Fe7@C nanoparticles. Leveraging the synergistic interactions of Fe–Nx sites with associated Co–Nx sites and core–shell nanoparticles within the MOF-derived nitrogen-doped mesoporous sheets and nanotubes, Fe3Co-NC@900 demonstrates outstanding ORR and OER performance, outpacing the Fe-NC@900 catalyst fabricated without Co incorporation. Specifically, it demonstrates superior ORR performance with a higher half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.88 V and a small Tafel slope of 62.1 mV dec−1, surpassing the Pt/C benchmark (E1/2 of 0.82 V) and Fe-NC@900 (E1/2 of 0.788 V). Additionally, it demonstrates noteworthy OER performance, requiring a 1.572 V overpotential at 10 mA cm−2 current density, resulting in a significant bifunctional activity with a potential gap (ΔE) of 0.692 V, surpassing the Pt/C + Ir/C combination (ΔE = 0.748 V). Moreover, serving as a bifunctional air electrode, Fe3Co-NC@900 exhibits excellent performance in lab-made Zn–air batteries, with outstanding open circuit voltage, specific capacity, and cycling stability (>650 cycles), outpacing the Pt/C + Ir/C-based battery.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) find wide-ranging applications owing to their adjustable structures, diverse compositions, and large specific surface area. In this work, MOFs materials were grown in situ on carbon cloth, yielding self-supported electrodes V O -(Fe,Co) 3 O 4 @CC rich in oxygen vacancies through a simple high-temperature annealing treatment utilizing NaBH 4 as an etchant. Thus the resulting self-supported electrode V O -(Fe,Co) 3 O 4 @CC exhibited excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance, achieving an overpotential of merely 288 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , along with a low Tafel slope of 31.39 mV dec -1 , and demonstrating robust long-term activity and stability. In addition, a liquid zinc-air battery was assembled utilizing the prepared V O -(Fe,Co) 3 O 4 @CC as an air cathode, achieving a high open-circuit voltage of 1.46 V and a high peak power density of 89.06 mW cm −2 , and it maintained excellent cycling stability during cyclic charging and discharging (with a current density of 2 mA cm −2 ) over a 32 h period. Meanwhile, the self-supported electrode V O -(Fe,Co) 3 O 4 @CC served as an air cathode for assembling an all-solid-state flexible zinc-air battery (ZAB), demonstrating a high peak power density (38.21 mW cm −2 ) and exhibiting favorable cycling stability. This experiment offers insights into the potential application of MOF-derived electrocatalysts in water decomposition and zinc-air batteries.

5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), which is obtained from fructose dehydration, can be oxidized to valuable biomass-based platform chemicals, such as 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), 2,5-dicarbonylfuran (DFF) and 5-formyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (FFCA). However, the complex reactions of dehydration and oxidations make it is still challenging to obtain these chemicals from fructose. Herein, a dual single-atomic Fe/Co composed of isolated FeN 6 and CoN 5 sites supported on N-doped carbon (Fe/Co-NC) was constructed to efficient conversion of fructose to FDCA, DFF or FFCA through a two-step strategy. Owing to the Lewis acid sites in Fe/Co-NC, fructose can efficiently convert to HMF with an isolated yield of 91.70 % at 145 °C in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). Furthermore, synergistic effect between Fe and Co atoms, which results in charge redistribution, can also promote the adsorption and activation of HMF and O 2 for efficient oxidation. Attributing to the various ability of Fe/Co-NC to activate O 2 in different solvents, superoxide radicals (·O 2 − ) generated in MeCN result in 97.70 % yield of DFF, while peroxyl radicals (·OOH) generated in water lead to 97.29 % yield of FDCA. Adding DMSO in aqueous system seriously hinders the reaction rate (rate constant from 0.0022 to 0.0008 min −1 ) due to solvation of HMF by DMSO, resulting in high yield of FFCA (81.56 %) at 4 h. Therefore, controllable conversion of FDCA, DFF or FFCA from fructose is achieved over Fe/Co-NC, and the readily recovered method and good stability of the catalyst also indicate the prospect for continuous production of the above chemicals from fructose in the future.

The non-invasive detection of acetone in exhaled breath via gas sensors offers a simple and efficient strategy for the auxiliary diagnosis of diabetes. Spinel ferrites have emerged as promising candidates for sub-ppm acetone detection due to their outstanding physicochemical and electronic properties. Despite the development of diverse spinel ferrites, the intrinsic correlation between cation type (i.e., M 2 + in the MFe 2 O 4 structure) and these materials’ gas-sensing properties has not been systematically elucidated. In this study, spinel ferrites with different metal ions (MFe 2 O 4 , M = Fe, Co, Ni and Zn) were synthesized via a facile one-step solvothermal method. The effects of cation type on the crystal structure, microstructural features, and acetone-sensing performance of these ferrites were systematically studied. It demonstrates that the cation type exerts a significant influence on the grain size, morphological and microstructural characteristics, and gas-sensing kinetics of these ferrites, thereby regulating their overall acetone-sensing performance. Notably, the NiFe 2 O 4 sensor exhibits superior acetone-sensing properties toward 1.0 ppm acetone at its optimal operating temperature, including a high response value, a low detection limit, excellent humidity tolerance, outstanding selectivity, and long-term stability. Furthermore, the NiFe 2 O 4 sensor can effectively distinguish acetone concentration differences in exhaled breath between healthy individuals and diabetic patients (using simulated samples). These results clarify the intrinsic correlation between cation type and acetone-sensing performance of spinel ferrites, providing practical guidance for the rational design of high-performance acetone-sensing materials and promoting their application in breath-based auxiliary diagnosis of diabetes.

PtM (M = Ni, Fe, Co) alloy nanoparticles were synthesized by a liquid phase reduction method employing butyllithium as a reducing agent. The alumina-supported PtM materials were then used as precursors to obtain the Pt-MxOy/Al2O3 catalysts through calcination. The influence of synthesis conditions of PtM alloy nanoparticles and the catalytic performance of the Pt-MxOy/Al2O3 catalysts for p-chloronitrobenzene hydrogenation reaction were investigated. The relevant characterizations such as XRD, XPS, and TEM were conducted for PtM alloy nanoparticles and Pt-MxOy/Al2O3 catalysts, and the result showed that the PtM nanoparticles are uniform alloy. Moreover, compared to PtM alloy nanoparticles, the Pt particle size of Pt-MxOy/Al2O3 using PtM alloy nanoparticle precursors did not increase by calcination, indicating good thermal stability. The catalytic activities of Pt-MxOy/Al2O3 for p-chloronitrobenzene hydrogenation reaction were significantly higher than that of control Pt/Al2O3 catalysts due to its strong Pt-MxOy interaction.

Pure magnetic materials always exhibit mediocre microwave absorption performance due to the poor impedance matching and negligible dielectric loss capability. In this study, a novel porous aggregates of multi-element doped Fe 3 O 4 /(Fe, Co, Ni, Cu) alloys (denoted as DF/alloys) composite which is composed of magnetic/magnetic heterostructure with excellent microwave absorption performance were prepared. By reducing part of the ferrimagnetic spinel into ferromagnetic alloy, the saturation magnetization M s was enlarged which is beneficial to exceeding the Snoek′s limit, and the magnetic loss capability was further enhanced significantly. Furthermore, the abundant heterogeneous interfaces in the DF/alloys composites have greatly improved the dielectric loss capability and balanced the complex permittivity and the complex permeability, and achieved superior impedance matching of the magnetic/magnetic heterogeneous DF/alloys composites. When the loading ratio (DF/alloys to paraffin mass ratio) was only 30 wt%, the widest effective absorption bandwidth ( EAB ) reached 5.58 GHz (3.2 mm). when the loading ratio was up to 50 wt%, the widest EAB (6.4 GHz) was achieved at 2.0 mm and the minimum reflection loss ( RL min ) reached −49.3 dB at 4.15 GHz. As microwave absorption materials, the DF/alloys composites are extremely promising and competitive.

In this study, in order to achieve efficient activation of persulfate, we added MoS2 as a co-catalyst to the iron, cobalt and nitrogen modified biochar (Fe–Co–N–BC) catalytic system. Analytical methods such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) demonstrated that the MoS2/Co–Fe–N–BC catalytic materials were successfully prepared. In the MoS2/Fe–Co–N–BC/PMS system, 97.5% of PFOA was removed within 180 min with Kobs of 0.074 min−1. Composites with different mass ratios of MoS2 and Co–Fe–N–BC/PMS in the non-homogeneous PMS system both exhibit excellent catalytic efficiency for TOC removal. In particular, MoS2/Fe–Co–N–BC obtained extraordinary catalytic efficiency through synergistic radical (SO4˙−, ˙OH) and non-radical (1O2, FeIV and FeV) processes, which was proved by the quenching experiments and the EPR testing. The analysis of the activation mechanism reveals that the three redox ion pairs Fe2+/Fe3+, Co2+/Co3+ and Mo4+/Mo6+ simultaneously participated in the activation of PMS, realizing multi-path electron transfer. And MoS2 played an excellent co-catalysis role in promoting the cycling of the valence states of the ions. Compared to Fe3+ and Co3+, the low valence states of Fe2+ and Co2+ can activate PMS more rapidly and produce more ˙OH and SO4˙−. However, the recycling efficiency of Fe2+ and Co3+ in the Fe–Co–N–BC system is low, and the presence of MoS2 improves the efficiency of Fe3+ and Co3+ reduction to Fe2+ and Co2+, respectively. The possible degradation pathways of PFOA were proposed. This study provides some references for the design of polymetallic-doped catalysts to degrade difficult-to-degrade organic pollutants.

Synthesis of electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with not only prominent electrocatalytic performance but also a low amount of Pt is the urgent challenge in the popularization of fuel cells. In this work, through a facile synthetic strategy of spray dehydration on a solid surface and annealing process, we demonstrate the first manufacture of quaternary structurally ordered PtM3 (M = transition metal) intermetallic nanoparticles (NPs), Pt(Fe, Co, Ni)3, in order to lower the content of Pt. The atomic contents of Pt, Fe, Co, and Ni are equal and the chemical structure of Pt(Fe, Co, Ni)3 is a cubic L12-ordered structure. L12-Pt(Fe, Co, Ni)3/C electrocatalysts exhibit enhanced electrocatalytic performance toward ORR with mass activity (MA) 6.6 times higher than the commercial Pt/C and a minimal loss of 17% in MA and 1.5% loss in specific activity (SA) after 10 000 potential cycles at 0.9 V. Furthermore, the stability behavior is confirmed to be attributed to the coaction of particle sizes and the ordering effect. Compared with traditional Pt-based electrocatalysts in the stoichiometric forms of Pt3M and PtM, L12-Pt(Fe, Co, Ni)3 intermetallic NPs exhibit excellent performance and higher cost effectiveness. Moreover, this work also proposes a facile and effective synthetic strategy for manufacturing multicomponent Pt-based electrocatalysts for ORR.

Flexible electrodes play an increasingly important role in the development of portable and wearable electronics. Herein, a novel flexible and self-supporting electrode supported on active electrocatalyst (Au/Fe–Co@C–Nx/GO/CC) has been prepared for in situ detection of extracellular H2O2. The Fe, N co-doping of Fe–Co@C–Nx with abundant active sites promotes electron transfer efficiency, and Fe–Co@C–Nx nano-arrays with a unique spatial structure are beneficial for the deposition of Au nanoparticles (AuNPs). Graphene oxide (GO) serves as a chemical bridge to ensure that the nanomaterials grow more uniformly and firmly on the carbon cloth. Meanwhile, the flexible carbon cloth possesses stable mechanical and electrochemical properties. Based on these unique superiorities, this flexible electrode exhibits excellent sensing performance toward H2O2 with high selectivity and sensitivity, low LOD (0.56 μM), and wide linear range (from 5 to 21195 μM). Most importantly, the prepared electrode can adhere to cells for in situ and sensitive determination of H2O2 released from cells. Compared to detecting H2O2 in cell suspensions, in situ detection can capture the signal molecules more sensitively and effectively, avoiding the diffusion of H2O2 from the solution to the electrode surface. This flexible electrode has great potential in development of molecular detection and portable electronics.

Using the flat module membrane electrodes based on polyester filter modified with polyaniline (PANI)–phytic acid (PA), a new type of membrane bio-reactor (MBR) system is developed for both bio-electrochemical electricity generation and effluent filtration. A specifically prepared carbon foam–Fe–Co catalyst was coated on the conductive, filterable cathode membrane which makes it catalytic for enhancing cathodic oxygen reduction reaction and electricity generation. The cell voltage (with carbon foam–Fe–Co, 0.5–0.4 V) is superior to control test 1 (without any catalyst, 0.2 V), moreover, it is even better than control test 2 (with Pt–C catalyst, 0.5–0.3 V). The corresponding maximum power density of carbon foam–Fe–Co is 38.5 and 2.4 times higher than control test 1 and 2, respectively. More importantly, the base electrode materials and catalyst were both low-cost. The overall removal efficiency of COD and NH4+–N are satisfactory, at 95% ± 2.5% and 85% ± 2.5%, respectively. This integrated system is easy to scale up for practical application in waste-water treatment and offers a better option in operating and coupling MBR with bio-electricity generation.

Platinum group metal-free catalysts based on transition metal and nitrogen co-doped carbon materials are gaining attention for their applications in electrocatalysis. Nitrogen-coordinated metal sites (MNx) have been identified as the main active sites in PGM-free catalysts. Current synthetic approaches rely on the high-temperature treatment to introduce targeted electroactive MNx sites into the carbon matrix. In this study, we demonstrated the formation of MNx sites on Ni- and N-co-doped carbon templates via the solution-phase coordination with target metal ions, including Fe2+, Fe3+, and/ Co2+. The formation of MNx sites was confirmed via a combined approach of various physical characterization techniques, elemental analysis, and electrochemical analysis. The results indicate that the metal-vacancy-Nx sites in the template can coordinate with target ions to form electrochemically active MNx sites. By varying heat-treatment temperature, the amount of FeNx sites formed via coordination with Fe2+ ion can be tuned and correlated with the change of activity toward oxygen reduction reaction. The amount of MNx sites formed via solution-phase coordination with various ions followed the sequence of Co2+ > Fe2+ > Fe3+. These findings may further guide the future development of MNx-C electrocatalysts through this solution-phase coordination approach.

La 3+ /Fe 2+ co-doping tailors U and W of CoO for bulk electronic optimization. • La 3+ -induced distortion reconstructs Lewis base sites to suppress shuttle effect. • Base sites show strong Li + adsorption and weaken S-S bonds via electron injection. • As supercapacitor cathode: 1405.6 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 , device energy 93.0 Wh kg −1 . • As Li-S sulfur host: 1161.6 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C, 62.1% retention after 100 cycles. This work develops La/Fe co-doped cobalt oxide (La/Fe-CoO) as a bifunctional electrode material to simultaneously enhance the electrochemical performance of supercapacitors and lithium-sulfur batteries, targeting the common bottlenecks of sluggish charge transport and poor surface reaction kinetics. The performance limitations of CoO arise primarily from its unfavorable electronic structure parameters: excessive Hubbard repulsion energy ( U ) and narrow band width ( W ), which severely restrict redox efficiency and electron conductivity. To address these issues, La 3+ and Fe 2+ co-doping is employed to achieve precise synergistic regulation of U and W . Fe 2+ doping constructs an extended “Co 3d -O 2p -Fe 3d ” orbital hybridization network that broadens W , optimizes charge transport pathways, and substantially improves intrinsic conductivity. Meanwhile, La 3+ reduces the effective Hubbard U through f-d orbital coupling, weakening intraorbital electron repulsion and lowering the reaction barrier. More importantly, the large ionic radius of La 3+ induces local lattice distortion, generating abundant electron-rich Lewis basic active sites on the material surface, which are distinctly different from the Lewis acidic sites commonly reported in the literature. Unlike acidic sites based on metal cations, these basic sites not only immobilize polysulfides by electrostatically adsorbing Li + ions, but also inject electrons into the S-S antibonding orbitals, exerting a redox catalytic effect that promotes S-S bond cleavage and accelerates polysulfide conversion kinetics, thereby effectively suppressing the shuttle effect in lithium-sulfur batteries. This work, through the synergistic design of bulk electronic structure ( U / W ) modulation and surface basic site reconstruction, offers a feasible strategy for developing high-performance bifunctional electrode materials for energy storage applications.
