A facile and efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalytic system was constructed based on interconnected Ni(OH) 2 nanosheets arrays electrode and Fe(III) containing alkali electrolyte. The partial deposition of Fe(III) onto Ni(OH) 2 with heterostructure obviously enhanced the OER current density and reduced the overpotential, and the Fe(III) cations in electrolyte also furnished positive contribution to the catalytic reaction, the synergy between Ni(OH) 2 electrode and Fe(III) cations in electrolyte therefore substantially improved the OER catalytic efficiency with low overpotential (285 mV at current density of 50 mA cm −2 ) and obviously enhanced current density (391 mA cm −2 at 1.8 V). The current work expands our understanding on the effect of Fe(III) cations in electrolyte to OER efficiency of Ni based catalyst, and opens up a cost-effective and practical avenue to enhance the OER catalytic efficiency by introducing metal cations in alkali electrolyte.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) featuring a fcu-type net based on 12-connected [Zr 6 (μ 3 -O) 4 (μ 3 -OH) 4 ] cluster have received considerable interest for the fundamental investigation of structure-property relationships in a wide range of catalytic reactions . In this work, the bipyridine (bpy) chelate group was introduced into the fcu-type framework of UiO-67, giving UiO-67bpy as the catalyst support. Then, FeCl 3 was post-synthetically anchored to the bpy group, resulting into the isolation of FeCl 3 /UiO-67bpy. Catalyzed hydrolysis of 5-hydroxylmethoxyfurfural (HMF) into levulinic acid (LA) was then explored and revealed that it can efficiently and selectively catalytic convert HMF into LA, which is superior to that of FeCl 3 /UiO-67 where FeCl 3 is encapsulated in the cage of UiO-67 and dispersed on the pore surface. The recyclability studies further confirmed the importance of anchored FeCl 3 where there is no significant decrease in catalytic activity as compared with that of FeCl 3 /UiO-67. Taking the detailed textural porosity and catalytic results of isomorphous structures in consideration, our studies revealed that narrowing the pore size with anchored FeCl 3 on the skeleton of the fcu-type Zr-MOF rather than encapsulating FeCl 3 inside the cage is more favored for the rehydration reaction of HMF to LA.

Electrospun nanofiber membrane (ENM) with huge specific surface area is an ideal solid substrate for sensors. However, only a few ENMs are developed into colorimetric sensors and it is even more challenging to fabricate multiple-ion-responsive ENM-based colorimetric sensor. In this study, benefiting from the excellent metal ion adsorption ability of poly(aspartic acid) (PASP) and high specific surface area of nanofibers, a reusable colorimetric sensor utilizing PASP electrospun nanofiber hydrogel membrane (ENHM) was designed to detect Cu2+ and Fe3+ in aqueous solution with simple filtration. The sensor based on PASP–ENHM exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity, and colorimetric responses for Cu2+ and Fe3+ detection could be observed by the naked eye. Upon exposure to Cu2+ aqueous solution, the color of the sensor changed from white to blue with a naked eye detection limit of 0.3 mg/L, while it turned from white to yellow with a detection limit of 0.1 mg/L for Fe3+ detection. Furthermore, this sensor was reusable after metal ion extraction by the desorption process.

Since thiosemicarbazide contains numerous nitrogen and sulfur atoms in its structural formula that enhance its strong coordinating abilities with metal ions , it is always selected as the mother molecule for the design of metal-ion sensors. In this report, a thiosemicarbazide derivative (4-naphthalenyl-3-thiosemicarbazide (NTSC)) was synthesized via a single step process and covalently conjugated onto the surfaces of carbon dots (CDs). The modified CDs demonstrated excellent monodispersity, good photostability, and tunable luminescence properties. More importantly, the CDs retained a highly specific Fe 3+ recognition capacity in contrast to other competing metal ions . Fe 3+ can efficiently quench the fluorescence of CDs even at fairly low concentration (30 μM) with a detection limit as low as 1.68 nM. The fluorescence quenching kinetics are likely to involve static quenching, which is caused by specific interactions between NTSC-CDs and Fe 3+ toward the formation of a ground state complex. Due to their excellent optical performance, low toxicity, and good biocompatibility the NTSC-CDs may be applied to the imaging and monitoring of Fe 3+ in bacillus subtilis. In effect we successfully fabricated an effective fluorescent nanosensor for both the quantitative detection of Fe 3+ in aqueous solutions, and its real-time imaging in vivo.

An environment-friendly synthesis of a covalently bonded terbium(Tb)-complex-containing monodispersed fluorescent porous copolymer microspheres, and their highly selective detection of Fe 3+ are described. The as-made copolymer microspheres exhibit intense green fluorescence originating from Tb ions and high photostability in water. Encouragingly, the fluorescence of the copolymer microspheres can be selectively quenched by trace Fe 3+ due to the interaction between Fe 3+ and the ligands, which disturbs the coordination structure of Tb-complexes and inhibits the energy transfer from ligands to Tb ions. The intense fluorescence intensity, high fluorescence stability, together with the nanoscale and porous nature of the copolymer microsphere endows them with wide detection range (0–1500 µ m ) and low detection limit (2.1 µ m ) for selective recognition of Fe 3+ in aqueous environment. This study paves a new pathway for the function of porous copolymer microspheres being used as targeting for biological detection and environmental issues.

Magnetic carbon spheres have been successfully prepared by the synchronous carbonation and activation of the 8-quinoliolato Fe(III) complexe with sphere morphology, which has been synthesized by solovthermal method. The obtained composite possesses relatively even pore diameter of 3.8 nm, high surface area of 335.59 m 2 /g with 52.67 wt.% Fe 3 O 4 coated, and a saturation magnetization (Ms) of 35.27 emu/g. Dye separation performance of the magnetic carbon spheres is investigated using methylene orange and methylene blue as modle. The resluts show that the maxium adsorption capacity for methylene orange and methylene blue is 128.70 mg g −1 and 151.29 mg g −1 , respectively, and the process can rapidly reach adsorption equilibrium within 5 min, which is important for the application of the as-prepared magnetic carbon spheres.

Water decontamination from As(III) is an urgent but still challenging task. Herein, we fabricated a bifunctional nanocomposite HFO@PS-Cl for highly efficient removal of As(III), with active chlorine covalently binding spherical polystyrene host for in situ oxidation of As(III) to As(V), and Fe(III) hydroxide (HFO) nanoparticles (NPs) embedded inside for specific As(V) removal. HFO@PS-Cl could work effectively in a wide pH range (5–9), and other substances like sulfate, chloride, bicarbonate, silicate, and humic acid exert insignificant effect on As(III) removal. As(III) sequestration is realized via two pathways, that is, oxidation to As(V) by the active chlorine followed by specific As(V) adsorption onto HFO NPs, and As(III) adsorption onto HFO NPs followed by oxidation to As(V). The exhausted HFO@PS-Cl could be refreshed for cyclic runs with insignificant capacity loss by the combined regeneration strategy, that is, alkaline solution to rinse the adsorbed As(V) and NaClO solution to renew the host oxidation capability. In addition, fixed-bed experiments demonstrated that the HFO@PS-Cl column could generate >1760 bed volume (BV) effluent from a synthetic As(III)-containing groundwater to meet the drinking water standard (<10 μg As/L), whereas other two HFO nanocomposites, HFO@PS-N and HFO@D201 could only generate 450 and 600 BV effluents under otherwise identical conditions.

It has been reported that the ultrasonic agitation coupled system (US/A) has higher oxidation efficiency than the pure ultrasonic system (US), and the atomic hydrogen ( H) and hydroxyl radicals ( OH) produced by H 2 O cracking and in situ hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) can be significantly detected. In order to utilize the residual H 2 O 2 and explore the role and fate of H, US/A/Fe(III) as an in situ Fenton oxidation system, was constructed in this study. The experimental results proved that the system can generate H 2 O 2 in situ , and adding Fe(III) could significantly promote the oxidation of refractory organic pollutants. Quenching tests, probes experiments and EPR test were performed to successfully monitor the existence of OH. The contribution of H to Fe(III) reduction was speculated and confirmed. In addition, the kinetic model showed the decomposition rate of water molecule and the reduction rate of Fe(III) by H under different ultrasonic power. The effects of the factors (pH, coexisting substance, and actual water environment) on degrading organic pollutants were evaluated. Therefore, this work provides new strategy and mechanistic insight into in situ Fenton technique by coupling ultrasonic agitation and Fe(III) without external oxidants.

Background/Objectives:Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) exhibits pronounced biological heterogeneity, aggressive behavior, and a high risk of recurrence and metastasis. The conventional treatments for TNBC have notable limitations: surgical resection may leave residual tumor cells; chemotherapy (CT) frequently induces systemic toxicity and drug resistance; and radiotherapy damages surrounding organs and compromises the patients’ immune function. Methods: Herein, we designed a carrier-free nanodrug delivery system composed of self-assembled Curcumin nanoparticles (NPs) coated with a tannic acid (TA)/Fe(III) network (denoted as CUR@TA-Fe(III) NPs). We systematically evaluated the in vitro cytotoxicity and photothermal–ferroptosis synergistic therapeutic efficacy of CUR@TA-Fe(III) NPs in 4T1 breast cancer cells, as well as the in vivo antitumor activity using 4T1 tumor-bearing mouse models.Results:CUR@TA-Fe(III) NPs had high drug loading efficiency (LE) of 27.99%, good dispersion stability, and photothermal properties. Curcumin could inhibit the growth of 4T1 cancer cells, while TA-Fe(III) efficiently converted light energy into heat upon exposure to near-infrared (NIR) light, leading to direct thermal ablation of 4T1 cells. Additionally, TA-Fe(III) could supply Fe(II) via TA, increase intracellular Fe(II) content, and generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) through the Fenton reaction, in turn inducing lipid peroxidation (LPO), a decrease in mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), and glutathione depletion, eventually triggering ferroptosis. Conclusions:This treatment strategy, which integrates CT, PTT, and ferroptosis, is expected to overcome the limitations of traditional single-treatment methods and provide a more effective method for the treatment of TNBC.

Iron oxides are widely utilized in catalytic ozonation, but their effectiveness is often limited by the slow Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox cycle. In this study, a series of metal sulfide–iron oxide composites were synthesized, all of which exhibited enhanced catalytic performance, with MoS 2 @Fe 3 O 4 showing outstanding efficiency. The catalytic system decomposes ozone (O 3 ) into hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), with ·OH predominantly contributing to the oxidation process. The catalytic process was significantly enhanced through three key pathways: (i) metal sulfides themselves demonstrate superior ozonation catalytic performance compared to iron oxides; (ii) the presence of Mo(IV) effectively promotes the Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox cycle; and (iii) the transient superoxide radical (·O 2 − ), a crucial intermediate in ozone chain decomposition, rapidly reduces high-valence Mo(VI) to Mo(IV), thereby reinforcing the Mo redox cycle, further strengthening the Fe redox cycle, and leading to the accumulation of 1 O 2 . Notably, the efficient utilization of ·O 2 − represents a unique mechanism in the catalytic ozonation system. These findings emphasize the critical role of the Mo redox cycle in enhancing Fe redox activity to promote catalytic ozonation, providing valuable insights for the development of advanced metal sulfide–iron oxide catalysts for environmental applications.

Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) incorporating metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) as fillers show attractive selectivity and permeability for gas separation. However, the performance improvement is restricted by undesirable interfacial interaction and inhomogeneous dispersion of MOFs in the membrane matrix. In this paper, amino-functionalized UIO-66 (U6N) with high porosity was employed as a filler and further regulated by a controlled plant polyphenol-induced surface modification strategy. The process involved the formation of tannic acid-iron(III) complex (TA-Fe(III)) on the U6N surface, which improved interfacial compatibility with the polyimide matrix while introducing abundant hydroxyl groups to enhance gas transport properties. Accordingly, the modified MMMs containing 30 wt.% U6N@TA-Fe(III) achieved optimized gas separation performance. Specifically, the CO 2 permeability increased to about 2495.9 Barrer with a CO 2 /CH 4 selectivity of 19.32, which exceeded the 2008 Robeson upper limit and showed an increase of 22.1% and 25.6%, respectively, compared to the MMMs embedded with unmodified U6N. Moreover, the improved dispersion of the U6N@TA-Fe(III) within the membrane structure is conducive to improving separation performance for CO 2 /N 2 and O 2 /N 2 . Therefore, this work provides a novel insight into the rational design of the MMMs via a facile modification strategy, which can further improve the gas separation performance of the MMMs.

The mechanism of spontaneous Fe III /Fe II redox cycling in iron-centered single-atom catalysts (I-SACs) is often overlooked. Consequently, pathways for continuous SO 4 ·- /HO⋅ generation during peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation by I-SACs remain unclear. Herein, the evolution of the iron center and ligand in I-SACs was comprehensively investigated. I-SACs could be considered as a coordination complex created by iron and a heteroatom N-doped carbonaceous ligand. The ligand-field theory could well explain the electronic behavior of the complex, whereby electrons delocalized by the conjugation effect of the ligand were confirmed to be responsible for the Fe III /Fe II redox cycle. The possible pyridinic ligand in I-SACs was demonstrably weaker than the pyrrolic ligand in Fe III reduction due to its shielding effect on delocalized π orbitals by local lone-pair electrons. The results of this study significantly advance our understanding of the mechanism of spontaneous Fe III /Fe II redox cycling and radical generation pathways in the I-SACs/PMS process.
