Interfacial Engineering of Quantum Dot-Decorated FeOOH Coupled with TiO2 Particles for Environmentally Adaptive and Energy-Efficient Electrophoretic Displays

Xingke Zheng,Yun Ye,Yuanyi Liu,Jiaqi Gao,Enguo Chen,Tailiang Guo

Developing outdoor displays that combine low power consumption with high visibility remains a major challenge for sustainable information technologies. Electrophoretic displays (EPDs) are reflective and energy-efficient but suffer from poor color saturation, limited brightness, and the lack of nighttime emissive capability. Herein, we report that functional composite electrophoretic particles, denoted as FeOOH@QD, are prepared by grafting green CdZnSeS/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) onto FeOOH pigment particles via a surface-initiated polymerization. The FeOOH@QD particles exhibit excellent charge stability and high color purity, as well as dual-mode optical behavior, showing vivid green reflection under daylight and bright green fluorescence under 365 nm UV excitation. By integrating these particles with modified white TiO2–KH570–PLMA electrophoretic particles, a QD-enhanced electrophoretic display (QDEPD) is fabricated. The QDEPD demonstrates rapid switching speeds (210–250 ms at ±30 V), high contrast ratios (3.6 in reflection mode and 22.6 in emission mode), long-term bistability with image retention over 24 h without power, and excellent cycling durability. Importantly, the dual-mode QDEPD operates without backlight under ambient light and requires only intermittent low-voltage driving, greatly reducing power consumption. By combining reflection and emission modes, the QDEPD enables environment-adaptive and energy-efficient viewing, highlighting its potential for sustainable outdoor display technologies.

Engineering Z-Scheme FeOOH/PCN with Fast Photoelectron Transfer and Surface Redox Kinetics for Efficient Solar-Driven CO2 Reduction

Shangcong Sun,Bo Peng,Ye Song,Ruoyu Wang,Haitao Song,Wei Lin

Solar-driven conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) without sacrificial agents offers an attractive alternative in sustainable energy research; nevertheless, it is often retarded by the sluggish water oxidation kinetics and severe charge recombination. To this end, a Z-scheme iron oxyhydroxide/polymeric carbon nitride (FeOOH/PCN) heterojunction, as identified by quasi in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, is constructed. In this heterostructure, the two-dimensional FeOOH nanorod provides rich coordinatively unsaturated sites and highly oxidative photoinduced holes to boost the sluggish water decomposition kinetics. Meanwhile, PCN acts as a robust agent for CO2 reduction. Consequently, FeOOH/PCN achieves efficient CO2 photoreduction with a superior selectivity of CH4 (>85%), together with an apparent quantum efficiency of 2.4% at 420 nm that outperforms most two-step photosystems to date. This work offers an innovative strategy for the construction of photocatalytic systems toward solar fuel production.

Polydopamine-coated carbonized cotton fabrics with β-FeOOH nanorods composites for highly efficient photo-Fenton degradation of organic pollutants

Wei Chen,Tao Zhou,Diankuan Gu,Ya He,Ziheng Zhang,Jiangyang Tian,Fan Fu

The photo-Fenton reaction has been widely applied in the decontamination of organic pollutants and has shown great potential in environmental remediation. The development of an appropriate catalyst with high activity and stability is essential for its success. Therefore, a composite catalyst was synthesized by in-situ mineralization of β-FeOOH nanorods on carbonized cellulose fabric (CCF) coated with polydopamine (PDA), which was denoted as β-FeOOH/PDA/CCF. The β-FeOOH/PDA/CCF catalyst with more than 77% degradation efficiency towards various contaminants and exhibited excellent chemical stability after six consecutive adsorption/degradation cycles. Radical scavenger experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy confirmed the presence of hydroxyl radicals (∙OH) that play a crucial role in the photo-Fenton degradation process. In addition, the degradation mechanism and pathway of MB was inferred. This work provides new perspectives on developing catalysts that demonstrate high stability and accelerated electron transfer, which can enhance the application of the photo-Fenton process in practical wastewater purification.

KOH-modified bamboo charcoal loaded with α-FeOOH for efficient adsorption of copper and fluoride ions from aqueous solution

Wei Yang,Lei Zhang,Meng Li,Ting Zhang,Yue Liu,Juan Liu

In this work, bamboo charcoal (BC) is prepared by pyrolysis of bamboo. Then, KOH modification and surface deposition of Goethite (α-FeOOH) are performed to obtain a new KOH-modified BC loaded with α-FeOOH (FKBC) adsorbent for copper (Cu2+) and fluoride (F−) ion adsorption from aqueous solution. Surface morphology and physiochemical properties of the prepared adsorbent are characterized by scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectrometer, X-ray diffraction, and N2 adsorption–desorption. The effect of pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage, and initial concentration on Cu2+ and F− adsorption is also investigated. In addition, adsorption kinetics and isotherms are fitted to pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir model, respectively. Thermodynamic parameters suggest that the adsorption process is spontaneous and endothermic. The adsorption mechanism is further characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The Cu2+ absorption mainly occurs through ion exchange, coordination reactions, and surface precipitation, while the F− adsorption mainly occurs via ion exchange and hydrogen bonding. The selective adsorption experiments reveal that FKBC has good selectivity for Cu2+ and F−. The adsorption–desorption experimental results indicate that FKBC can be reused for Cu2+ and F− adsorption after regeneration. Results indicate that FKBC can be a promising adsorbent for Cu2+ and F− removal from aqueous solutions.

Improved utilization of active sites for phosphorus adsorption in FeOOH/anion exchanger nanocomposites via a glycol-solvothermal synthesis strategy

Yi Zhang,Qiong Tang,Yifan Sun,Chenxu Yao,Zhen Yang,Weiben Yang

Metal oxide/hydroxide-based nanocomposite adsorbents with porous supporting matrices have been recognized as efficient adsorbents for phosphorus recovery. Aiming at satisfying increasingly restrictive environmental requirements involving improving metal site utilization and lowering metal leakage risk, a glycol-solvothermal confined-space synthesis strategy was proposed for the fabrication of FeOOH/anion exchanger nanocomposites (Fe/900s) with enhanced metal site utilization and reduced metal leakage risk. Compared to composites prepared using alkaline precipitation methods, Fe/900s performed comparably, with a high adsorption capacity of 19.05 mg-P/g with an initial concentration of 10 mg-P/L, a high adsorption selectivity of 8.2 mg-P/g in the presence of 500 mg-SO 4 2− /L, and high long-term resilience (with a capacity loss of ~14% after five cycles), along with substantially lower Fe loading amount (4.11 wt.%) and Fe leakage percentage. Mechanistic investigation demonstrated that contribution of the specific FeOOH sites to phosphate adsorption increased substantially (up to 50.97% under the optimal conditions), in which Fe(III)-OH was the dominant efficient species. The side effects of an excessively long reaction time, which included quaternary ammonium decomposition, FeOOH aggregation, and Fe(III) reduction, were discussed as guidance for optimizing the synthesis strategy. The glycol-solvothermal strategy provides a facile solution to environmental problems through nanocrystal growth engineering in a confined space.

Noble Metal-Free FeOOH/Li0.1WO3 Core–Shell Nanorods for Selective Oxidation of Methane to Methanol with Visible–NIR Light

Yi Zeng,Xin Luo,Feng Li,Anhua Huang,Hongmei Wu,Guo Qin Xu,Song Ling Wang

Hydroxyl radicals (•OH) generated in the photocatalytic process are crucial to the conversion of methane (CH4) to value-added methanol (CH3OH) at room temperature. However, utilizing noble metal-free catalysts and low-energy photons of solar light, such as visible and near-infrared light (vis–NIR), is difficult to provide more electron states to form •OH radicals. Here, we developed FeOOH/Li0.1WO3 core–shell nanorods via a two-step in/out co-modification of hexagonal tungsten oxide (h-WO3): (1) lithium ions intercalating into the hexagonal tunnels of h-WO3 to form Li0.1WO3 nanorods and (2) using FeOOH-wrapped Li0.1WO3 to obtain FeOOH/Li0.1WO3 core–shell nanorods. Introduction of lithium induces polaron transition in Li0.1WO3, enabling the absorption of vis-NIR light. Interestingly, FeOOH-based Fenton-like reaction when H2O2 is selected as an oxidant favors the generation of more •OH radicals available for CH4 oxidation to CH3OH. Meanwhile, FeOOH with FeIII as an “electron sink” highly improves the separation of photoinduced electrons and holes in Li0.1WO3. Eventually, efficient selective formation of CH4OH is achieved with remarkable generation rates up to ∼342 and ∼160 μmol g–1 at visible light (420–700 nm) and NIR light (≥800 nm), respectively. Our finding opens up new possibilities for developing noble metal-free catalysts for solar energy-driven CH4 conversion to CH3OH under ambient conditions.

Maiyong Zhu,Qi Chen,Jingjing Tang,Wenjing Wei,Songjun Li

The combination of carbon and iron oxide has recently attracted increasing research interest in energy conversion and storage . Here, the hybrid nanostructure with N, S-codoped Fe 3 O 4 supported/embedded on/in N-doped porous carbon (NS-Fe 3 O 4 @N-PC) nanococoon was prepared via direct pyrolysis of core@shell β-FeOOH@Polypyrrole (β-FeOOH@PPy) composite. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of high redox activity of NS-Fe 3 O 4 and excellent electrical conductivity as well as good mechanical stability of N-PC, the obtained NS-Fe 3 O 4 @N-PC exhibited an enhanced specific capacitance of 866 F/g at 1 A/g along with excellent rate capability (383 F/g at 10 A/g) and improved cycling stability (78.2% of initial capacitance retained after 5000 cycles test) while applied as electrode materials of supercapacitor . Significantly, the asymmetric supercapacitor devices assembled using NS-Fe 3 O 4 @N-PC as anodes and commercial carbon nanotubes as cathodes can achieve a large stack energy density of 38.9 Wh/Kg at a stack power density of 700.2 W/Kg along with good stability (only 8.4% decay of initial capacitance after 5000 cycles at 4 A/g). The present work may provide a general approach for fabricating other metal oxide@carbon hybrid nanomaterials for various applications.

Polygonal mesopores microflower catalysts for the catalytic oxidation of 2-nitro-4-methylsulfonyltoluene to 2-nitro-4-methylsulfonylbenzoic acid in a continuous-flow microreactor

Jianzhi Wang,Xugen Li,Cheng Zhang,Yuan Pu,Jiawu Liu,Jie Liu,Yanping Liu,Xiao Lin,Faquan Yu

The development of efficient systems for the catalytic oxidation of 2-nitro-4-methylsulfonyltoluene (NMST) to 2-nitro-4-methylsulfonyl benzoic acid (NMSBA) with atmospheric air or molecular oxygen in alkaline medium presents a significant challenge for the chemical industry. Here, we report the synthesis of FeOOH/Fe 3 O 4 /MOF polygonal mesopores microflower templated from a MIL-88B(Fe) at room temperature, which exposes polygonal mesopores with atomistic edge steps and lattice defects. The obtained FeOOH/Fe 3 O 4 /MOF catalyst was adsorbed onto glass beads and then introduced into the microchannel reactor. In the alkaline environment, oxygen was used as oxidant to catalyze the oxidation of NMST to NMSBA, showing impressive performance. This sustainable system utilizes oxygen as a clean oxidant in an inexpensive and environmentally friendly NaOH/methanol mixture. The position and type of substituent critically affect the products. Additionally, this sustainable protocol enabled gram-scale preparation of carboxylic acid and benzyl alcohol derivatives with high chemoselectivities. Finally, the reactions can be conducted in a pressure reactor, which can conserve oxygen and prevent solvent loss. Moreover, compared with the traditional batch reactor, the self-built microchannel reactor can accelerate the reaction rate, shorten the reaction time and enhance the selectivity of catalytic oxidation reactions. This approach contributes to environmental protection and holds potential for industrial applications.

Urchin-like FeOOH nanowire arrays on hierarchical Laponite@diatomite scaffolds enable synergistic radical/non-radical peroxymonosulfate activation via confined microreactor

Nan Dai,Chuan Jing,Dong Liu,Yuxin Zhang

A novel multidimensional mineral composite catalyst, FeOOH@Laponite@Diatomite (FeOOH@La@D), was synthesized by loading FeOOH onto Laponite@diatomite (La@D). The sea-urchin-like structure of FeOOH@La@D provides a large specific surface area and numerous active sites. It has a good adsorption performance for methylene blue (MB) and congo red (CR), with adsorption capacities of 630.3 mg/g and 257.1 mg/g, respectively. The synergistic effect of FeOOH and Laponite enhanced peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation performance, achieving 99 % methyl orange (MO) removal within 20 min. Quenching experiments and EPR spectra indicate that SO 4 ●- and 1 O 2 are the dominant active species. Electrochemical and XPS results support electron transfer and Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ cycling. Combining response surface methodology with random forest models, pH value and dosage are identified as key factors. This work provides candidate materials and a theoretical basis for designing environmentally friendly non-homogeneous catalysts for wastewater treatment.

Synergetic Oxidation and Adsorption of Arsenite by Core-Shell β-FeOOH@MnO2 Nanocomposite for Enhanced Removal of Arsenic From Water

Shifeng Li,Yan Zhou,Shiyu Wang,Shuhua Yao,Min Xiao

Arsenic contamination in water, particularly from highly toxic arsenite (As(III)), continues to pose a significant global public health challenge due to its high mobility and resistance to conventional treatment methods. This study presents an innovative core-shell β-FeOOH@MnO 2 nanocomposite, which synergistically integrates MnO 2 nanosheets to oxidize As(III) into adsorptive arsenate (As(V)) and β-FeOOH to facilitate the efficient uptake of As(V). This approach addresses common limitations such as particle aggregation and suboptimal adsorption observed in pure MnO 2 systems. The nanocomposite, synthesized by hydrothermal methods, exhibits a doubled surface area of 172.95 m 2 /g, offering numerous active sites and mesopores conducive to rapid mass transfer. Under optimized conditions (pH 3.0, 0.4-g/L dosage), the nanocomposite achieved 98.39% removal of As(III) and a maximum adsorption capacity of 50.26 mg/g at 25°C, following pseudo-second-order kinetics and endothermic chemisorption. Characterization techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), confirmed the synergistic mechanism, wherein MnO 2 oxidizes As(III) through the reduction of Mn 4+ to Mn 3+ , and the resulting As(V) is adsorbed by β-FeOOH. This advancement offers a cost-effective and efficient solution for improved arsenic remediation in water treatment applications. Graphical A core-shell β-FeOOH@MnO 2 nanocomposite effectively removes toxic arsenite by oxidizing mobile As(III) to adsorptive As(V) and adsorbing it, achieving high removal efficiency.

Robust superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic cotton fabric decorated by β-FeOOH and PVA with excellent oil-water separation and photodegradation properties

Yongfei Zhu,Jiayi Li,Shujuan Yu

The oils and organic dyes in wastewater have caused serious damage to the environment, thus, it is very urgent to develop a multifunctional wastewater treatment material by a simple and environment-friendly method. Herein, a layer of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-Fe3+-citric acid (CA) crosslinked structure combined with β-FeOOH particles was firmly anchored on a cotton fabric (CF) through a simple dip-coating and in-situ mineralization method to obtain a robust multifunctional superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic CF (β-FeOOH/PVA/Fe-CA-CF). β-FeOOH/PVA/Fe-CA-CF could separate different immiscible oil/water mixtures with a separation efficiency of exceeding 98.26% and high flux of 25,347 L/m2·h only by gravity, especially, it also could separate oil-in-water emulsions with a separation efficiency up to 94.07%. Moreover, β-FeOOH/PVA/Fe-CA-CF displayed an outstanding photocatalytic degradation capacity to organic dyes and the removal efficiency of methylene blue (MB) could reach 98.5% in 20 min. Meanwhile, the modified CF exhibited satisfactory chemical stability, high temperature and abrasion resistance. More importantly, β-FeOOH/PVA/Fe-CA-CF possessed excellent reusability, whose separation efficiency for petroleum ether/water mixture could reach 96.5% after 20 cycles and removal efficiency of MB was still up to 89% after 12 cycles. Therefore, this work provides a facile strategy for the design of multifunctional biodegradable wastewater treatment materials with high durability.

Synergistic Induction by Deep Eutectic Solvent and Carbon Dots for Rapid Construction of FeOOH Electrocatalysts Toward Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Weijuan Xu,Hui Wang,Xuan Han,Shuzheng Qu,Yue Yan,Bingxian Zhu,Haipeng Zhang,Qingshan Zhao

The development of efficient and stable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts based on non-precious metals is pivotal for advancing sustainable energy conversion technologies. We present a facile and green strategy for synthesizing a high-performance HO-CDs-FeOOH/NF(D) composite catalyst by leveraging a synergistic system of FeCl3/urea deep eutectic solvent (DES) and hydroxyl-functionalized carbon dots (HO-CDs). This system orchestrates the rapid, in situ growth of FeOOH on nickel foam (NF) via simple immersion, wherein the DES acts as both an etchant and an iron source, while the HO-CDs induce a morphological transformation from sheet-like to granular stacking, thereby constructing highly active interfaces and increasing the density of accessible catalytic sites. The optimized catalyst exhibits exceptional OER performance, requiring an overpotential of only 251 mV to achieve 50 mA cm−2, with a Tafel slope of 55.4 mV dec−1. Moreover, it demonstrates outstanding stability, maintaining 98% of its initial current density after 24 h of continuous operation and showing negligible performance decay after 3000 cycles. This work presents a straightforward approach for designing high-performance Fe-based electrocatalysts through carbon dot-mediated morphology control via a facile DES-based impregnation strategy.
