Cyclodextrins grafted MoS2/g-C3N4 as high-performance photocatalysts for the removal of glyphosate and Cr (VI) from simulated agricultural runoff

Zhansheng Wu,Xiufang He,Yongtao Xue,Xia Yang,Yunfeng Li,Qubing Li,Bing Yu

The hydrophobicity of MoS 2 /g-C 3 N 4 based photocatalysts remains a major hurdle to their successful application for the remediation of water-soluble contaminants such as herbicides and heavy metals. Herein, we develop new photocatalysts based on the graft of three different cyclodextrins (α-CD, β-CD and γ-CD) on MoS 2 /g-C 3 N 4 composites (CDs/MoS 2 /g-C 3 N 4 ) for the removal of glyphosate and Cr (VI) from simulated agricultural runoff. CDs/MoS 2 /g-C 3 N 4 show remarkably enhanced photocatalytic activities for glyphosate degradation and Cr (VI) reduction compared to pristine MoS 2 /g-C 3 N 4 . In addition, γ-CD/MoS 2 /g-C 3 N 4 exhibits the highest hydrophilicity and photocatalytic activity among these three different cyclodextrins grafted MoS 2 /g-C 3 N 4 . The mechanistic investigation indicates that cyclodextrins can not only increase the accumulation of glyphosate and Cr (VI) onto the surface of CDs/MoS 2 /g-C 3 N 4 but also facilitate the fleet separation of photo-induced electron-hole pairs. In summary, these results collectively imply that the graft of cyclodextrins could be an effective strategy to improve the photocatalytic efficiency of MoS 2 /g-C 3 N 4 composites for the removal of glyphosate and Cr (VI) from simulated agricultural runoff.

A ratiometric fluorescence and colorimetry dual-signal sensing strategy based on o-phenylenediamine and AuNCs for determination of Cu2+ and glyphosate

Li Ziqiang,Liang Shuang,Zhang Changsheng,Zhou Li,Luo Fengjian,Lou Zhengyun,Chen Zongmao,Zhang Xinzhong,Yang Mei

A ratiometric fluorescence sensing strategy has been developed for the determination of Cu 2+ and glyphosate with high sensitivity and specificity based on OPD (o-phenylenediamine) and glutathione-stabilized gold nanoclusters (GSH-AuNCs). Water-soluble 1.75-nm size GSH-AuNCs with strong red fluorescence and maximum emission wavelength at 682 nm were synthesized using GSH as the template. OPD was oxidized by Cu 2+ , which produced the bright yellow fluorescence oxidation product 2,3-diaminophenazine (DAP) with a maximum fluorescence emission peak at 570 nm. When glyphosate existed in the system, the chelation between glyphosate and Cu 2+ hindered the formation of DAP and reduced the fluorescence intensity of the system at the wavelength of 570 nm. Meanwhile, the fluorescence intensity at the wavelength of 682 nm remained basically stable. It exhibited a good linear relationship towards Cu 2+ and glyphosate in water in the range 1.0–10 µM and 0.050–3.0 µg/mL with a detection limit of 0.547 µM and 0.0028 µg/mL, respectively. The method was also used for the semi-quantitative determination of Cu 2+ and glyphosate in water by fluorescence color changes visually detected by the naked eyes in the range 1.0–10 µM and 0.30–3.0 µg/mL, respectively. The sensing strategy showed higher sensitivity, more obvious color changes, and better disturbance performance, satisfying with the detection demands of Cu 2+ and glyphosate in environmental water samples. The study provides a reliable detection strategy in the environment safety fields. Graphical abstract

An ‘on–off–on’ fluorescent switch based on a luminous covalent organic framework for the rapid and selective detection of glyphosate

Jiaxuan Fan,Jing Li,Wenfeng Zhou,Haixiang Gao,Runhua Lu,Hongchao Guo

Glyphosate, the most used herbicide in the world, has a residue problem that cannot be ignored. However, glyphosate itself does not have fluorescence emission and lacks the conditions for fluorescence detection. In this work, a rapid and selective fluorescence detection method of glyphosate was designed by an ‘on–off–on’ fluorescent switch based on a luminous covalent organic framework (L-COF). Only the fixed concentration of Fe 3+ as an intermediate could trigger the fluorescent switch and no incubation step was required. The proposed method showed good accuracy with a correlation coefficient of 0.9978. The method's limits of detection and quantitation were 0.88 and 2.93 μmol/L, which were lower than the maximum allowable residue limits in some regulations. Environmental water samples and tomatoes were selected as actual samples to verify the application in a complex matrix. A satisfactory mean recovery from 87% to 106% was gained. Furthermore, Fe 3+ could induce fluorescence quenching of L-COF through the photo-induced electron transfer (PET) effect, while the addition of glyphosate could block the PET effect to achieve detection. These results demonstrated the proposed method had abilities to detect glyphosate and broaden the application of L-COF.

A portable smartphone-based detection of glyphosate based on inhibiting peroxidase-like activity of heptanoic acid/Prussian blue decorated Fe3O4 nanoparticles

Dan Chen,Chunqiong Wang,Dezhi Yang,Huimin Deng,Qiulan Li,Li Chen,Gaokun Zhao,Junli Shi,Ke Zhang,Yaling Yang

The rapid and onsite detection of glyphosate in tobacco products is still a great challenge. In this study, a novel smartphone-assisted sensing platform for the detection of glyphosate has been successfully proposed through the peroxidase-like activity of Fe3O4-based nanozyme. Heptanoic acid/Prussian blue (PB) decorated Fe3O4 nanoparticles (Fe3O4@C7/PB) could catalyze and oxidize 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS, colorless) into a steel blue colored product in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. Glyphosate could specifically inhibit the peroxidase-like activity of Fe3O4@C7/PB by occupying the active site, thereby the glyphosate detection could be accomplished within 10 min by monitoring the color change of ABTS. This study has developed a smartphone-based portable detection platform for online analysis of glyphosate with a detection limit of 0.1 μg mL−1. The absorbance response curve of glyphosate showed good linearity in the concentration range of 0.125–15 μg mL−1 at 415, 647, and 730 nm. Moreover, by employing a co-precipitation technology and inhibiting the peroxidase-like activity, the glyphosate analysis would be less affected by the tobacco sample matrix. The nanosensor possesses excellent selectivity and anti-interference ability, which has application value in actual samples for onsite screening.

Slow release of attapulgite based nano-enabled glyphosate improves soil phosphatase activity, organic P-pool and proliferation of dominant bacterial community

Xuejuan Hou,Hui Nan,Xin Chen,Fei Ge,Yun Liu,Feng Li,Dayi Zhang,Jiang Tian

Glyphosate (Glp) was encapsulated onto the dopamine-modified attapulgite to develop an attapulgite-based nano-enabled Glp (DGlp) in this study with comparable weed control effects to pure Glp and commercial Glp solutions. Within 24 hours, the active Glp molecule was slowly released from DGlp at a maximum remaining rate of over 90%, and then degraded similarly to Glp solution in soil. The addition of DGlp improved soil available phosphorus (P) contents, phosphatase activity, and enzyme extractable P fraction. However, compared to Glp solution, DGlp addition had no effect on the transformation of soil inorganic P fractions. The 16S rRNA sequencing and co-occurrence network results revealed that DGlp had no significant effect on the soil bacterial diversity but diminished the complexity of soil bacterial network. According to the Mantel test, DGlp addition stimulated soil phosphatase activity and proliferation of dominant bacterial taxa (Proteobacteria and Firmicutes) capable of degrading Glp. Proteobacteria and Firmicutes that had been extensively recruited and enriched for their phosphatase activities may have mobilized reactive enzyme-P, significantly enhancing the transformation of reactive organic P and P-pool in soil. These results contributed to our understanding of the ecotoxicity and environmental impacts of nano-enabled Glp prior to its successful and sustainable application in agriculture.

Role of 2‒13C Isotopic Glyphosate Adsorption on Silver Nanoparticles Based on Ninhydrin Reaction: A Study Based on Surface—Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy

Meng-Lei Xu,Yu Gao,Jing Jin,Jin-Feng Xiong,Xiao Xia Han,Bing Zhao

Glyphosate is one of the most commonly used and non-selective herbicides in agriculture, which may directly pollute the environment and threaten human health. A simple and effective approach to its detection is thus quite necessary. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy was shown to be a very effective method to approach the problem. However, sensitivity in SERS experiments is quite low, caused by different orientation/conformation of the adsorbed molecules on the metal surface, which limit its detection by using SERS. In this paper, 2‒13C‒glyphosate (hereafter: 13–GLP) was designed as a model molecule for theoretical and experimental studies of the molecule structure. Vibrational modes were assigned based on the modeling results obtained at the B3LYP/6-311++G** level by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which were performed to predict the FT‒IR and Raman spectra. Band downshifts were caused by13C atom isotopic substitution with mass changed. Moreover, SERS spectra of 13–GLP by combining ninhydrin reaction on Ag NPs were obtained. Isotopic Raman shifts are helpful in identifying the components of each Raman band through vibrations across the molecular system. They are coupled by probe molecules and thus bind to the substrates, indirectly offering the opportunity to promote interactions with Ag NPs and reduce the complex equilibrium between different orientation/conformation of glyphosate molecules on the metal surface. Keywords:glyphosate;isotopic Raman shifts;SERS;ninhydrin reaction

Mechanistic investigation and dual-mode colorimetric-chemiluminescent detection of glyphosate based on the specific inhibition of Fe3O4@Cu nanozyme peroxidase-like activity

Ke Deng,Haixia Hu,Yi Li,Xue Li,Huiling Deng,Ya Chen,Xiao Yang,Lijun Wang,Xianggui Chen

In this study, a dual-mode colorimetric/CL nanosensor was developed for glyphosate detection based on the specific inhibition of Fe 3 O 4 @Cu peroxidase-like activity. Synthesized Fe 3 O 4 @Cu exhibited high levels of peroxidase-like activity that triggered the oxidation of luminol/3,3′,5,5′-tetramethyl benzidine dihydrochloride (TMB) to excited-state 3-aminophthalic acid/blue oxTMB, thereby delivering a CL signal/visible colorimetric signal, however, the presence of glyphosate inhibited this activity, resulting in a decrease in signal strength. In-depth investigation revealed that this inhibitory mechanism occurs via two pathways: one in which glyphosate chelates with Fe(III)/Cu(II) and occupy the catalytical active sites of Fe 3 O 4 @Cu, thereby decreasing the generation of OH, and another in which glyphosate competes with TMB to consume generated OH, thus reducing the oxidation of TMB. This mechanism formed the basis of our novel dual-mode colorimetric/CL glyphosate nanosensor, which achieved limits of detection (LODs) of 0.086 µg/mL and 0.019 µg/mL in tests, thus demonstrating its significant potential for on-site glyphosate monitoring.

Impact of chronic exposure to field level glyphosate on the food consumption, survival, gene expression, gut microbiota, and metabolomic profiles of honeybees

Changsheng Ma,Gaoying Gu,Sihao Chen,Xiaoyu Shi,Zuren Li,Hongmei Li-Byarlay,Lianyang Bai

Glyphosate (GLY) is among the most widely used pesticides in the world. However, there are a lot of unknowns about chronic exposure to GLY's effects on Honeybee (HB) behavior and physiology. To address this, we carried out five experiments to study the impact of chronic exposure to 5 mg/kg GLY on sugar consumption, survival, gene expression, gut microbiota, and metabolites of HB workers. Our results find a significant decrease in sugar consumption and survival probability of HB after chronic exposure to GLY. Further, genes associated with immune response, energy metabolism, and longevity were conspicuously altered. In addition, a total of seven metabolites were found to be differentially expressed in the metabolomic profiles, mainly related the sucrose metabolism. There was no significant difference in the gut microbiota. Results suggest that chronic exposure to field-level GLY altered the health of HB and the intricate toxic mechanisms. Our data provided insights into the chronic effects of GLY on HB behavior in food intake and health, which represents the field conditions where HB are exposed to pesticides over extended periods.

Simultaneous determination of glyphosate, glufosinate ammonium and their metabolites in maize and soybean by ultra-performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry

Kuan Wang,Yue Geng,Zhe Dong,Xinglu Pan,Xiaohu Wu,Jun Xu,Haixiang Gao,Fengshou Dong,Yongquan Zheng

Glyphosate and glufosinate ammonium are non-selective, broad spectrum herbicides for controlling grasses in agriculture and forestry. Rapid and sensitive analytical methods for effective monitoring and subsequent risk control of glyphosate and glufosinate ammonium and their metabolites in crops are not available. In this paper, an analytical method for the simultaneous determination of glyphosate, glufosinate ammonium, and their metabolites in maize and soybean by ultra-performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry was established. The seven compounds were well separated on an anion exchange analytical column within 10 min, with the mean recoveries of the target compounds ranging from 78.2 to 110.9%. The method showed good linearity (R2 ≥ 0.9819) with a limit of quantification for glyphosate, glufosinate ammonium, and their metabolites of 0.01 mg kg−1 in both maize and soybean. The method simplifies and expedites the sample preparation procedures, overcomes the traditional disadvantages including derivatization, weak retention, and low sensitivity, and has been successfully validated in actual maize and soybean samples.

Smartphone-assisted sensing platform based on dual-responsive nitrogen-doped carbon dots for enzyme-free and visual quantitative detection of Cu2+ and glyphosate

Xinyu Luo,Ziyi Liu,Linfan Wang,Liwei Gao,Dingfeng Wang,Ting Zhang,Da Chen

Rapid and selective detection of copper ion (Cu 2+ ) and glyphosate (GLY) is crucial to environmental pollution control, especially when using a simple and portable device. In this study, an enzyme-free and visual fluorescence sensor based on nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) is successfully designed, featuring strong blue fluorescence and excellent stability. The sensor shows a linear response to Cu 2+ over a wide detection range of 0.048 to 40 μM with a low limit of detection (LOD, 48 nM), resulting in fluorescence quenching at 435 nm. Meanwhile, the rapid enhancement in fluorescence intensity of the quenched N-CDs/Cu 2+ system can be triggered by GLY owing to the strong complexation between Cu 2+ and GLY, with a LOD of GLY as low as 0.24 μM. Furthermore, we develop a smartphone-assisted sensing platform using N-CDs/polyvinyl alcohol films, which captures and analyzes fluorescence images to detect Cu 2+ and GLY with sensitive LODs of 73 nM and 0.32 μM, respectively. Satisfactory recoveries, ranging from 94.0 % to 104.6 %, are achieved in real sample detection, implying the potential application in the field of enzyme-free and on-site pesticides detection.

Cold-Induced Phase Separation Coupled With High-Performance Liquid Chromatography-Fluorescence Detection for Determination of Glyphosate, Aminomethylphosphonic Acid, and Glufosinate in Environmental Water

Chaonan Huang,Li Wang,Huiqing Zhang,Weiqiang Tan,Lingxia Wu,ShaSha Wang,Jiping Ma

Glyphosate (GLP) and glufosinate (GLU) are among the most widely used herbicides; however, the strong polarity of these molecules, coupled with the absence of chromophores and fluorophores, poses significant challenges for their detection. In this study, a simple and highly sensitive analytical method was developed by coupling cold-induced liquid-liquid extraction (CI-LLE) pretreatment with high-performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence detection, enabling the simultaneous determination of GLU, GLP, and its metabolite aminomethylphosphonic acid (they are denoted as GLP-based compounds) in environmental water. CI-LLE employs an acetonitrile/water mixture, which is frozen at -22°C to induce phase separation, resulting in an upper acetonitrile-rich phase and a lower water-rich phase, thereby achieving effective enrichment and purification of the target compounds. The GLP-based compounds enriched in the aqueous phase were subsequently derivatized with 9-fluoromethyl chloroformate to obtain fluorescent derivatives for detection. The parameters for CI-LLE (treatment time, concentration of chelating agents, sample pH, and acetonitrile content) as well as derivatization conditions (including pH, reagent concentration, and reaction time) were systematically optimized. The developed method exhibited excellent sensitivity (with limits of detection in the range of 0.1–0.4 µg L −1 ), satisfactory recoveries (81.0%–105.2%), and repeatability (relative standard deviations <10%). Compared to the chromatogram prior to CI-LLE treatment, the significant enhancement in cleanup efficiency enabled accurate and quantitative analysis. In summary, the proposed CI-LLE method provides an efficient and accurate approach for the determination of GLP-based compounds in aqueous samples, highlighting its strong potential for environmental monitoring applications.

Noble-metal-free high-entropy alloy aerogels with peroxidase-like activity mediated bioenzyme-free colorimetric sensor for portable and rapid detection of glyphosate

Wen Qing Jia,Jian Bing Li,Jiang Zhu,Qiao Wan,Zhen Chen,Lei Han

Noble-metal-free high-entropy alloy nanozyme was synthesized in a facile way. • A bioenzyme-free sensor was constructed for direct and rapid sensing of Gly. • This sensor shows high sensitivity and selectivity for Gly detection. • Smartphone-assisted hydrogel kit can realize point-of-care testing of Gly. It is urgently needed to exploit an effective technique for point-of-care testing (POCT) of glyphosate (Gly). Herein, we synthesized a high entropy alloy aerogel (FeCoNiCuMn HEAAs) nanozyme for quick and portable detection of Gly. The FeCoNiCuMn HEAAs with excellent peroxidase (POD)-mimetic activity can catalyze 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) oxidation to blue oxTMB in the presence of H 2 O 2 . Gly can restrain the POD-mimetic activity of FeCoNiCuMn HEAAs due to the coordination between the FeCoNiCuMn HEAAs and Gly via P–O–Cu and P–O–Fe, leading to a decreased absorbance of the system. Leveraging this mechanism, a bioenzyme-free mediated colorimetric sensor was designed for Gly detection. This colorimetric sensor displays high specificity and sensitivity for Gly. Given its simplicity and bioenzyme-free participation, a smartphone-assisted hydrogel kit was also constructed for the POCT of Gly. The potential application of the colorimetric sensor and hydrogel kit was verified by detecting the Gly in foods. Download: Download high-res image (157KB) Download: Download full-size image
