Preparation of Smart Self-Healing Coatings on Zinc Surfaces Using Halloysite Nanotubes Loaded with Corrosion Inhibitors

Xichang Shan,Zhongli Zou,Zhijuan Mi,Kunmin Tong,Chunping Hou

This work presents the development of a novel nanotube (S12HNTS-T-P) that is coated with polyethylenimine (PEI) and internally loaded with a corrosion inhibitor (thiourea) utilizing vacuum negative pressure and electrostatic adsorption methods. A smart self-healing coating with self-repairing properties was fabricated on the basis of S12HNTS-T-P. Bis[3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl]tetrasulfide (Si69), a widely used organosilane coupling agent, provides stability and corrosion resistance. The integration of S12HNTS-T-P into Si69 significantly enhances the coating’s corrosion resistance and self-healing capabilities. To further evaluate the performance of the smart self-healing coating, a control group comprising Si69 coatings without S12HNTS-T-P was established. Electrochemical tests revealed that the coating with 3 wt % S12HNTS-T-P exhibited markedly superior corrosion resistance compared to those with 0, 1, and 5 wt % S12HNTS-T-P. In comparison to the control group, the coating with 3 wt % S12HNTS-T-P demonstrated a 99.4% increase in corrosion inhibition efficiency after 72 h of immersion in a 3.5 wt % NaCl solution. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and immersion tests further corroborated that the smart self-healing coating exhibited self-repairing behavior when subjected to external scratching stimuli. Simulation results indicated that thiourea released from the nanotubes can adsorb and form a protective film at the scratch sites, effectively repairing the coating’s defects. The exceptional corrosion resistance and high healing rates of the smart self-healing coating suggest that S12HNTS-T-P plays a pivotal role in enhancing the corrosion protection of zinc.

Preparation of cresyl diphenyl phosphate-loaded halloysite nanotube composite and its flame retardancy in epoxy resin

Xiangliang Zhang,Yu Zhang,Xiaohong Li,Zhijun Zhang,Zhiwei Li

To address the shortcomings of poor thermal stability, easy migration, and over-plasticization of the liquid organic phosphorus flame retardant, cresyl diphenyl phosphate (CDP), we employed halloysite nanotube (HNT) as a carrier to load CDP, thus forming a novel composite (HNT-CDP). The results demonstrated that the CDP loaded into HNT channels was 41 wt%. HNT-CDP composites exhibited higher thermal stability, water resistance, and flame retardancy than mixtures of HNT and CDP in epoxy resin (EP). With a loading of 15 wt%, the limiting oxygen index of EP/HNT-CDP increased to 48.3 and achieved a V-0 rating in UL94 tests. Additionally, HNT-CDP exhibited better inhibitory effects on the peak heat release rate and total heat release of EP, as well as a longer time to ignition, compared with the mixture. Moreover, as opposed to EP/HNT + CDP, EP/HNT-CDP exhibited a significant 114.5% increase in tensile strength. These excellent thermal, water resistance, and mechanical properties can be primarily attributed to the loading of CDP by HNT channels. HNT effectively utilizes the channel confinement effect to isolate CDP from directly interacting with EP. The outstanding flame retardancy is mainly due to the synergistic effect between HNT and CDP after the formation of the composite.

Functionalized halloysite nanotube by chitosan grafting for drug delivery of curcumin to achieve enhanced anticancer efficacy

Mingxian Liu,Yanzhou Chang,Jing Yang,Yuanyuan You,Rui He,Tianfeng Chen,Changren Zhou

Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) have a unique tubular structure in nanoscale, and have shown potential as novel carriers for various drugs. Coating the nanotubes with a hydrophilic polymer shell can significantly decrease the toxicity and provide colloidal stability during blood circulation. Here, we synthesized chitosan grafted HNTs (HNTs-g-CS) and investigated their potential as a nano-formulation for the anticancer drug curcumin. The structure and properties of HNTs-g-CS were characterized using water contact angle, zeta-potential, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. HNTs-g-CS exhibit a maximum 90.8% entrapment efficiency and 3.4% loading capacity of curcumin, which are higher than those of raw HNTs. HNTs-g-CS also show no obvious hemolytic phenomenon and good stability in serum. The cumulative release ratio of curcumin from HNTs-g-CS/curcumin at cell lysate after 48 hours is 84.2%. The curcumin loaded HNTs-g-CS show specific toxicity to various cancer cell lines, including HepG2, MCF-7, SV-HUC-1, EJ, Caski and HeLa, and demonstrate an inhibition concentration of IC50 at 5.3–192 μM as assessed by cytotoxicity studies. The anticancer activity of this nanoformulation is extremely high in EJ cells compared with the other cancer cell lines. The cell uptake of HNTs-g-CS is confirmed by fluorescence microscopy. Flow cytometric analysis of curcumin loaded HNTs-g-CS shows that curcumin loaded HNTs-g-CS increase apoptosis on EJ cells. The content of ROS created by HNTs-g-CS/curcumin is more than that of free curcumin. All these results suggest that HNTs-g-CS are potential nanovehicles for anticancer drug delivery in cancer therapy.

Activation of peroxymonosulfate by halloysite nanotube-supported TiO2 composite for efficient photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B

Yuhao Luo,Zhengdong Zhang,Shanhua Chen,Ao Jiang,Xingyu Chen,Xiaodong Zhu,Yuli Di

In this study, to enhance the peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-assisted photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light over TiO 2 , a novel halloysite nanotube (HNTs) supported TiO 2 composite photocatalyst was prepared by the sol-gel method. The crystal structure and bonding information of samples were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV–visible diffuse reflection spectroscopy (DRS), photoluminescence (PL) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were used to characterize the morphology, optical properties and energy band structure of the samples. The composite with weight ratio of 1:5 (HNTs/TiO 2 ) (named HT-20) exhibited apparently enhanced PMS-assisted photocatalytic RhB degradation efficiency and can degrade approximately 95.31 % of RhB in 30 min, and the first-order rate constants (k) of HT-20-PMS system is about 54.5 times higher than that of B–TiO 2 . In addition, the possible mechanism of enhanced PMS-assisted photocatalytic activity of HT-20 was proposed. The improvement of photocatalytic activity in the composite photocatalyst can be ascribed to the large surface area and strong adsorption capacity of HNTs.

Switched recognition and release ability of temperature responsive molecularly imprinted polymers based on magnetic halloysite nanotubes

Jianming Pan,Hui Hang,Xiaohui Dai,Jiangdong Dai,Pengwei Huo,Yongsheng Yan

CoFe2O4/halloysite nanotube magnetic composites (MHNTs) were firstly achieved via a wet impregnation technique, and then a thermal polymerization under (NH4)2S2O8 chain initiation in water was employed to obtain methacrylic acid-functionalized MHNTs (MAA-MHNTs). By decorating the MAA-MHNTs with the temperature responsive monomer N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM), a novel temperature responsive molecularly imprinted material based on the obtained NIPAM-MHNTs (TMMIPs) was synthesized by a surface imprinting technique. The results of characterization indicated that the TMMIPs exhibited magnetic sensitivity (Ms = 1.758 emu g−1), magnetic stability (in the pH range of 2.0–8.0), thermal stability (especially below 200 °C) and contained a temperature responsive imprinted layer (the lower critical solution temperature was 33.96 °C). Then the TMMIPs were applied to switched recognition and release of 2,4,5-trichlorophenol molecules (5-TCP) by changing the medium temperature. TMMIPs showed outstanding recognition ability towards the imprinted species under high temperature conditions (such as 60 °C), due to the loss of hydration and a collapsed state of inter-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), which resulted in the formation of a specific structure between 5-TCP and the polymer network. In contrast, at relatively low temperatures (such as 20 °C), the captured 5-TCP was released from the swelled TMMIPs, which resulted from increasing the distance between 5-TCP and the polymer network. The selective analysis demonstrated the high affinity and selectivity of TMMIPs towards 5-TCP over competitive phenolic compounds, and the specific recognition of binding sites may be based on the distinct size, structure and functional groups of the template molecules.

Fabricating roughened surfaces on halloysite nanotubes via alkali etching for deposition of high-efficiency Pt nanocatalysts

Qiuru Wang,Yanyan Wang,Yafei Zhao,Bing Zhang,Yunyin,Niu,Xu Xiang,Rongfeng Chen

Technological applications of heterogeneous nanocatalysts on supports have generally relied on the surface or interface properties of supports. Herein, we report a facile approach to fabricate roughened surfaces on halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) through etching the wall of HNTs in a molten-salt system. SEM, TEM, XRD, FTIR, AFM and N2 adsorption/desorption analysis are employed to systematically investigate the morphology, structure and surface properties. The results suggest that the roughness of HNTs surface has been significantly increased and defects are formed on the tube wall without structural damage. Subsequently, the roughened halloysite nanotubes (RHNTs) are used as supports to prepare heterogeneous nanocatalyst. Pt nanoparticles with a uniform size can be homogeneously deposited onto the RHNTs surfaces via a one-step hydrothermal reduction. The as-prepared Pt@RHNTs catalyst exhibits remarkably improved activity and selectivity for the hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde towards cinnamyl alcohol compared with the pristine halloysite support. Furthermore, Pt@RHNTs catalyst shows rapid catalytic rates in hydrogenation reactions and excellent leaching resistance in cycle uses.

Synergy tetraethylenepentamine and diethanolamine impregnated within silica nanotubes derived from natural halloysite for efficient CO2 capture

Xiaoyu Li,Haoran Li,Xueqi Zhao,Yanrong Zhao,Bo Zhang,Keping Zhao,Kang Peng

Amine-impregnated porous solid adsorbents are promising commercial CO 2 capture adsorbents for CO 2 mitigation due to relatively large CO 2 capacity and high CO 2 selectivity . However, the intrinsic viscosity and aggregation of the polyamine leads to low amine efficiency and greatly limits its further development. In this work, a facile and efficient approach was carried out to manipulate the porosity of natural halloysite (HNTs) support with hollow tubular structure and impregnate mixed-polyamines, i.e., both tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) and diethanolamine (DEA) to synergistically enhance CO 2 adsorption capacity , fast adsorption kinetics and thermal/chemical stability compared to the individual supported TEPA and DEA. The effects of the blend amount for TEPA and DEA, adsorption temperature and CO 2 partial pressure on CO 2 adsorption capacity and adsorption kinetics were specifically discussed. Due to the auxiliary effect of DEA, the chemical reaction between non-hydroxylated TEPA and CO 2 was altered thus improving amine efficiency and the agglomeration layer between protonated TEPA molecules and carbamate, which existed due to electrostatic interaction when TEPA was loaded alone, was loosened thus improving amine efficiency and adsorption kinetics. Therefore, the maximum CO 2 adsorption capacity of MHNTs loaded with 20 wt% TEPA and 20 wt% DEA was 3.25 mmol/g at 75 °C in the flow of 40 vol% N 2 /60 vol% CO 2 . Compared with loading individual TEPA with multiple amino groups on MHNTs, individual DEA with hydroxyl groups could increase the utilization efficiency of the amino groups of TEPA and ultimately obtain excellent CO 2 capture capacity and adsorption kinetics. The experimental results show that the adsorbents obtained in this study using mixed amine impregnated silica nanotubes derived from natural minerals have a promising application in practical CO 2 capture and separation processes.

Enhancement of active anti-corrosion properties of waterborne epoxy resin by mussel bionic modified halloysite nanotube

Chenyu Zhao,Yuan Hu,Weihong Guo

Halloysite nanotube (HNT) is often used as a microcapsule loaded with corrosion inhibitors due to its cavity structure. However, the strong van der Waals forces between halloysite nanotubes can cause aggregation in organic coatings . Therefore, in this study, a new type of modified halloysite nano-filler (PDA@T-AHNT) was synthesized by a step-by-step method using the characteristics of self-polymerization of dopamine under an alkaline environment to achieve surface coating of halloysite nanotubes by polydopamine (PDA) to improve the dispersion of halloysite nanotubes in waterborne epoxy resin . UV-Vis was used to characterize the pH-responsive release properties of the modified nanofillers. Composite coatings were formed by adding PDA@T-AHNT into the water-based epoxy resin. FE-SEM was used to observe the morphology of the coatings, and EIS was used to test the electrochemical behavior of the coatings soaked in 3.5 wt% NaCl for 60 days to characterize the corrosion resistance of the coatings. The final results show that the 3 wt% PDA@T-AHNT composite coating (EPP-3) has the best corrosion resistance with a low-frequency impedance of 2.81 * 10 6 Ohm.cm 2 after 60 days of immersion, which is much higher than the 1.45 * 10 6 Ohm.cm 2 of the pure epoxy resin coating (WEP). In conclusion, the results of this study demonstrated the application potential of PDA@T-AHNT nano-filler in corrosion protection of steel, especially in metal corrosion protection under acidic environment.

An enhanced MEMS-based polyimide capacitive-type relative-humidity sensor with halloysite nanotube as a modifier

Yongfeng Mu,Pengfei Jin,Li Zheng,Chao Wang,Yanjie Hou,Weiwei Liu,Liangyou Si,Zhihui Liu

Polymers have been widely used in the fabrication of humidity sensing materials, although, issues including sensitivity and hysteresis still exist, limiting its potential. Herein, we aim to enhance the humidity sensing performances of a polyimide (PI) capacitive-type relative-humidity sensor via a simple and efficient approach. Specifically, modified halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) were doped in the polyimide sensing layer to optimize the humidity sensing capabilities of the MEMS (Micro-electromechanical Systems)-based sensor. The configurational and morphological characteristic of the sensing membrane with different content of the nanofiller were characterized. The humidity sensing capabilities of the enhanced sensors were investigated under the relative humidity (RH) range of 10–90%. Owing to the rational structure design of the sensing layer, the modified sensor exhibited enhanced sensitivity, low humidity hysteresis and good linearity. The highest sensitivity of the device with the best overall performance reached 0.87 pF/%RH, which is 1.81 times that of the pure PI based humidity sensor. Meanwhile, the sensor maintained moderate humidity hysteresis (2.18%) as well as good linearity (R 2  = 0.9813) within the humidity boundary from 10 to 90% RH. The aforementioned advantages of the PI-HNTs-NH 2 based humidity sensor demonstrate its promising application in humidity measurement. As a low-cost and effective additive, HNTs own great application potential in the preparation of polymer sensing devices. This work provides valuable guidance for fabricating humidity sensors with outstanding sensing performances.

Conductive halloysite nanotubes/polypyrrole cathodes prepared by one-step in situ polymerization for zinc-ion batteries

Xu Peijie,Zhou Yi,Wang Chunyuan,Cao Zhao,Cheng Hongfei

Zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are desirable as one of the most potential energy storage devices owing to the environmental friendliness and abundant zinc reserves. Nevertheless, numerous promising cathode materials suffer from complicated preparation processes and low electronic conductivity. Herein, a high-performance cathode material (HNTs-PPy) for ZIBs based on halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) with a polypyrrole (PPy) coating is prepared through an efficient one-step in situ polymerization. The PPy nanoparticles can be uniformly and densely coated on the external surface of HNTs with a thickness of ~ 3.8 nm. The surface valence state and banding configuration of HNTs-PPy show the diffusion of the electron cloud from the outside of the PPy to the inside of HNTs and further form a strong polycomplexation between HNTs and PPy. Compared to PPy, introducing HNTs efficiently increases the contact area between the electrolyte and the composite cathode materials and sequentially enhances the cycling stability. The ZIBs based on HNTs-PPy cathode also achieve a capacity retention of 87.4% at a current density of 0.5 A g −1 after 500 cycles. This work develops a new perspective strategy for large-scale production of time- and cost-efficient cathode materials for aqueous batteries.

Photothermal/lysozyme-catalyzed hydrolysis dual-modality therapy via halloysite nanotube-based platform for effective bacterial eradication

Jie Chen,Chenyang Qi,Yipin Zhang,Qinqin Zhang,Jing Tu

Bacterial biofilm seriously impedes the healing of infected wound, remaining a major challenge in wound repair. Antibiotic-free antibacterial strategies based on nanotechnology are emerging as promising tools to combat bacterial infections. Here, halloysite nanotube (HNT), as a natural clay mineral, was employed to fabricate a multifunctional platform (designated as [email protected] @PDA-Lys) through a layer-by-layer strategy for treating bacterial infections by utilizing synergistic lysozyme (Lys)-photothermal therapy (PTT). Specifically, amino-modified HNTs were first decorated with copper sulfide (CuS), followed by coated with a polydopamine (PDA) layer, then functionalized with antimicrobial enzyme Lys onto the surface of PDA via cation-π interactions. The as-prepared [email protected] @PDA-Lys at a low dose (200 μg/mL) exhibited excellent synergistic Lys-photothermal bactericidal activity against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) (100.0 ± 0.2 %) and Staphyloccocus aureus ( S. aureus ) (99.9 ± 0.1 %), eliminated 75.9 ± 2.0 % of S. aureus biofilm under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation (808 nm, 1.5 W/cm 2 ). In vivo experiments using a S. aureus -infected rat model showed [email protected] @PDA-Lys could rapidly kill bacteria and accelerate wound healing process. Overall, this multifunctional nanoplatform combines the advantages of PTT and Lys, providing a cost-efficient, environmental friendly strategy for bacterial and biofilm eradication, demonstrating the potential applications in the field of biomedicine.

NIR light-powered halloysite-based nanomotors for CT imaging diagnosis and synergistic chemo-photothermal cancer therapy

Xiaolei Zhang,Ziying Wang,Yangsai Lyu,Jia Li,Kun Song,Ningning Xing,Dickon H.L. Ng

Near-infrared (NIR) light-powered nanomotors with active motion have attracted extensive attention in the chemo-photothermal therapy of cancer. However, there are also some limitations such as complicated synthesis process, low permeability of drugs and viscous physiological environment. Herein, we developed a facile route to synthesize novel NIR light-powered DOX/Au-m-HTAS nanomotor based on natural halloysite (HNTs) for active chemo-photothermal therapy. Such nanomotor exhibited NIR light controlled on/off motion with a maximum speed of 64.5 μm/s. Owing to the synergetic NIR light-powered motion and chemo-photothermal therapy, DOX/Au-m-HTAS nanomotor could effectively adhere tumor cells, leading to deeper cell penetration, higher cellular uptake, and better ablation of tumor cells. Meanwhile, DOX/Au-m-HTAS nanomotors also had enhanced ability for CT imaging of local tumor, demonstrating the enhanced anticancer efficiency. This strategy provided a new insight into the chemo-photothermal synergistic therapy of tumors.
