Polyoxometalates electron acceptor-intercalated In2O3@SnO2 nanofibers for chemiresistive ethanol gas sensors

Liwei Zhang,Jinmei Tian,Yuting Wang,Tianqi Wang,Meijie Wei,Feng Li,Dan Li,Ying Yang,Hui Yu,Xiangting Dong

Polyoxometalates (POMs), as a kind of electron acceptors , comes into sight in gas sensing field. Here, we in situ construct a group of polyoxomethoate/semiconductor one-dimensional tandem heterojunction materials using convenient one-step coaxial electrospinning method . A polyoxometalates electron acceptor layer was intercalated into In 2 O 3 @SnO 2 nanofibers (NFs), forming In 2 O 3 @PW 12 @SnO 2 coaxial core-middle-shell NFs. Gas sensing performances of the one-dimensional In 2 O 3 @PW 12 @SnO 2 tandem heterojunctions were investigated for the first time. The fabricated NFs exhibited excellent detection performances for ethanol gas. The optimal sensitivity response to 100 ppm ethanol can reach 22.6, which is about 4 times that of POMs-free samples. Other gas sensing parameters were also comprehensively studied. The significant enhancement can be attributed to the addition of appropriate amount of PW 12 electron acceptor which accelerate electrons transfer and reduce the recombination of electron-hole pairs. This work provides a novel strategy for developing high performance gas sensors by constructing tandem heterojunctions as well as introducing POMs electron acceptor, and offers new insight into the development of POMs-based gas sensors.

Near room temperature operable H2S sensors based on In2O3 colloidal quantum dots

Shuqin Yang,Zhilong Song,Naibo Gao,Zhixiang Hu,Licheng Zhou,Jingyao Liu,Baohui Zhang,Guangzu Zhang,Shenglin Jiang,Hua-Yao Li,Huan Liu

Indium oxide (In 2 O 3 ) nanomaterials have been investigated extensively as promising candidates for gas sensor applications. Here, we fabricate near room temperature operable H 2 S-sensitive gas sensors based on In 2 O 3 colloidal quantum dots (CQDs). Room-temperature film deposition of In 2 O 3 CQDs followed by surface ligand exchange treatment through Cu inorganic salts was employed to construct the sensor devices. Combined with a moderate annealing treatment, the long-chain ligands surrounding the quantum dot surfaces were completely removed to enhance gas adsorption and carrier transport, simultaneously resulting in the formation of CuO that may act as a catalytic promoter or form p-n heterojunction for selective H 2 S detection. The sensors exhibited high response up to 90 toward 5 ppm of H 2 S with response/recovery time of 72 s/200 s respectively, suggestive of a performance improvement compared to the In 2 O 3 -based H 2 S sensors reported in existing literature. The power law analysis indicated that the main oxygen species adsorbed on the surfaces were O 2 − and O − with the proportion of approximate 1:1 at near room temperature. The gas-sensing mechanism was attributed to the decisive role of surface states in determining the electrical conduction of quantum dot gas sensors.

Excellent Formaldehyde Gas-Sensing Properties of Ruptured Nd-Doped In2O3 Porous Nanotubes

Wang Xuesong,Li Haiying,Ni Mucui,Wang Lianyuan,Liu Li,Wang Han,Guo Xuexin

The ruptured Nd-doped In 2 O 3 porous nanotubes have been successfully synthesized by single-capillary electrospinning method. The morphologies of the as-prepared materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. It can be seen obviously that the surface of the nanotubes are distributed with cracks and pores, which formed such an open nanostructure. The crystal structures and components were determined by x-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectrometer. The gas-sensing properties of ruptured Nd-doped In 2 O 3 porous nanotubes were studied and the results show the excellent performances of the as-obtained materials. The response of ruptured Nd-doped In 2 O 3 porous nanotubes to 100 ppm of formaldehyde is 46.8 at the optimum temperature of 240°C. The response and recovery times are 8 s and 22 s, respectively. Furthermore, the lowest detection limit of formaldehyde is 100 ppb with the value of 2.4. In addition, the ruptured Nd-doped In 2 O 3 porous nanotubes exhibit good selectivity to formaldehyde and long-term stability.

High Response Gas Sensors for Formaldehyde Based on Er-doped In2O3 Nanotubes

Xuesong Wang,Jinbao Zhang,Lianyuan Wang,Shouchun Li,Li Liu,Chang Su,Lili Liu

Pure and Er-doped In 2 O 3 nanotubes were systematically fabricated by using a single nozzle eletrospinning method followed by calcination . The as-synthesized nanotubes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectrometry and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). Compared with pure In 2 O 3 nanotubes, Er-doped In 2 O 3 nanotubes exhibit improved formaldehyde sensing properties at 260 °C. The response of Er-doped In 2 O 3 nanotubes to 20 ppm formaldehyde is about 12, which is 4 times larger than that of pure In 2 O 3 nanotubes. The response and recovery times of Er-doped In 2 O 3 nanotubes to 20 ppm formaldehyde are about 5 and 38 s, respectively. Furthermore, the response of Er-doped In 2 O 3 nanotubes to 100 ppb formaldehyde is 2.19.

Bilayer photoanode approach for efficient In2O3 based planar heterojunction perovskite solar cells

Peng Chen,Xingtian Yin,Meidan Que,Yawei Yang,Xiaobin Liu,Wenxiu Que

Indium oxide (IO) has been demonstrated as an efficient and stable electron transporting layer for planar heterojunction perovskite solar cells , but dispersive pinholes in the sol-gel derived IO film limit its hole blocking capacity and corresponding device performance. In this study, we introduce an ultrathin TiO x interlayer between Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) substrate and IO film via a low temperature TiCl 4 treatment method. By optimizing the process time, we obtain the optimal perovskite solar cells with a 30 min TiCl 4 treatment process, showing an impressive power conversion efficiency of 16.38%. In addition, the average device efficiency is improved from 13.7% to 15.1%, which is mainly attributed to the greatly improved fill factor. By means of investigating film roughness, pinhole effect and open circuit voltage decay, we find that the low-temperature processed TiO x interlayer efficiently enhance the hole blocking capacity of the electron transporting layer, and consequently boost the device performance.

S-induced Phase Change Forming In2O3/In2S3 Heterostructure for Photoelectrochemical Glucose Sensor

Bingrong Wang,Nan Zhang,Yifeng Wang,Delun Chen,Junlei Qi,Jinchun Tu

Graphical Interface construction through experimental control of the introduced anions allows the tuning of the energy bands of photoanode materials. The cooperative energy band and electronical structure of In 2 O 3 /In 2 S 3 resulted in a photocurrent of 0.6 mA⋅cm −2 when exposed to light irradiation. This strategy has practical significance for developing low-cost, high-performance PEC sensors. In the past several decades, Photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing still remains a great challenge to design highly-efficient semiconductor photocatalysts via a facile method. It is of much importance to design and synthesize various novel nanostructured sensing materials for further improving the response performance. Herein, we present an In 2 O 3 /In 2 S 3 heterostructure obtained by combining microwave assisted hydrothermal method with S-induced phase change, whose energy band and electronic structure could be adjusted by changing the S content. Combining theoretical calculation and spectroscopic techniques, the introduction of sulfur was proved to produce multifunctional interfaces, inducing the change of phase, oxygen vacancies and band gap, which accelerates the separation of photoexcited carriers and reduces their recombination, improving the electronic injection efficiency around the interface of In 2 O 3 /In 2 S 3 . As anticipated, an enhanced glucose response performance with a photocurrent of 0.6 mA cm −2 , a linear range of 0.1–1 mM and a detection limit as low as 14.5 μM has been achieved based on the In 2 O 3 /In 2 S 3 heterostructure, which is significant superior over its pure In 2 O 3 and S-doped In 2 O 3 counterparts. This efficient interfacial strategy may open a new route to manipulate the electrical structure, and energy band structure regulation of sensing material to improve the performance of photoelectrodes for PEC.

Synthesis and NO2 Sensing Properties of In2O3 Micro-Flowers Composed of Nanorods

Zhenyu Wang,Haizhen Ding,Xuefeng Liu,Jing Zhao

Semiconductor oxide gas sensors have important applications in environmental protection, domestic health, and other fields. Research has shown that designing the morphology of sensitive materials can effectively improve the sensing characteristics of sensors. In this paper, by controlling the solvothermal reaction time, a unique hexagonal flower-like structure of In2O3materials consisting of cuboid nanorods with a side length of 100–300 nm was prepared. The characterization results indicated that with the increase in reaction time, the materials exhibited significant morphological evolution. When the solvent heating time is 5 h, the flower-like structure is basically composed of hexagonal nanosheets with a thickness of several hundred nanometers and a side length of several micrometers. With the increase in reaction time, the apex angles of the nano sheets gradually become obtuse, and, finally, with the Ostwald ripening process, they become cuboid nanorods with side lengths of 100–300 nanometers, forming unique micro-flowers. Among them, the material prepared with a reaction time of 20 h has good sensing performance for NO2, exhibiting low operating temperature and detection limit, good selectivity, repeatability, and long-term stability, thus suggesting a good application prospect.Keywords:In2O3;micro-flowers;morphological evolution;NO2sensor;solvothermal

Construction of mesoporous In2O3-ZnO hierarchical structure gas sensor for ethanol detection

Bin Jiang,Tiantian Zhou,Ling Zhang,Wenjiang Han,Jiaqi Yang,Chong Wang,Yanfeng Sun,Fangmeng Liu,Peng Sun,Geyu Lu

The development of mesoporous heterogeneous structure through a facile and repeatable method with high gas sensing performance is always highly desirable in the chemical sensor field. Herein, the mesoporous In 2 O 3 -ZnO heterogeneous structure has been successfully synthesized via a reproducible hydrothermal method . The characterizations of sensing materials demonstrate that the porous heterogeneous structure can be easily constructed. Gas sensing investigation indicates that the gas sensor based on 15 at. % In 2 O 3 -ZnO exhibits the obvious enhanced ethanol gas sensing performances compared with that based on pure ZnO material in our previous work, including lower detection limit (200 ppb), lower base line resistance (∼ 1 Mohm), satisfying long term stability and improved moisture tolerance. The enhanced gas sensing properties can be mainly attributed to the In 2 O 3 -ZnO heterogeneous structure and unique microstructure, which will be deliberately discussed in the sensing mechanism part.

Hollow ZnWO4/In2O3 Nanotubes for Ultrasensitive and Rapid Trace Detection of Triethylamine

Duo Sun,QiLin Wang,Wei Wang,Yu Chen,Shengping Ruan

The directional modulation of metal oxide semiconductors (MOSs) can be effective in developing high-performance gas-sensing materials. Herein, we propose an efficient strategy by modifying ZnWO4 on In2O3 to achieve controllable modulation of oxygen vacancies and energy band structures in ZnWO4/In2O3 heterostructures. The sensor based on optimized ZnWO4/In2O3 exhibits significantly enhanced performance to detect triethylamine, including a lower operating temperature (100 °C), a higher responsivity (Ra/Rg = 221.2 for 100 ppm), and a lower detection limit (500 ppb). In addition, the fabricated sensor exhibits faster response and good selectivity. The improved gas-sensing performance could be attributed to the acid–base interaction between triethylamine gas and ZnWO4, the formation of heterojunctions, and the increase of oxygen vacancies to achieve a synergistic modulation of the chemical and energy band structures. It is anticipated that our current investigation could offer insights and a useful strategy for triethylamine detection.

Hollow In2O3/In2S3 nanocolumn-assisted molecularly imprinted photoelectrochemical sensor for glutathione detection

Dongqing Liu,Xinyu Bai,Jing Sun,Danyang Zhao,Chenghui Hong,Nengqin Jia

Based on hollow In 2 O 3 /In 2 S 3 material, an innovative molecularly imprinted photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor was developed for sensitive detection of glutathione (GSH). Using nicotinamide as a functional monomer , the GSH template molecule was imprinted on hollow In 2 O 3 /In 2 S 3 material with a large specific surface area, which has better selectivity to GSH. The cavernous structure of the material facilitates the enhanced absorption of visible light due to light scattering and reflection. The heterojunction structure between In 2 O 3 and In 2 S 3 also promotes the rapid separation of electron-hole pairs, which significantly enhance the photocurrent response. The constructed sensor exhibits the detection range from 1 μmol L −1 to100 μmol L −1 with a detection limit of 0.82 μmol L −1 (S/N = 3). Meanwhile, the PEC sensor has excellent stability and selectivity, which provides an innovative idea for the actual detection of GSH.

Au doped In2O3 nanoparticles: Preparation, and their ethanol detection with high performance

Jian Fang,Zhi-Hong Ma,Jing-Jing Xue,Xi Chen,Rong-Pu Xiao,Ji-Ming Song

Precious metals doping can greatly change the gas sensing performance of semiconductor metal oxide . Herein, the Au-doped In 2 O 3 nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared via a combination solvothermal and liquid-phase reduction method, and the obtained nanoparticles were characterized by various techniques. The results indicated that Au nanocrystals with a diameter ca. 5 nm were uniformly distributed on the surface of the irregular In 2 O 3 NPs. Importantly, compared with undoped In 2 O 3 , the specific surface area of all the Au-doped In 2 O 3 NPs increased. And all the Au-doped In 2 O 3 sensors greatly improved the gas sensing performance towards ethanol. The optimal operating temperature reduced from 240 °C for undoped In 2 O 3 to 200 °C for Au-doped In 2 O 3 . Of them, the 4 wt% Au-doped In 2 O 3 sensor displayed highly response (106 towards ethanol at 100 ppm) at the optimal operating temperature, good linear coefficient, high reproducibility, and long-term stability towards ethanol. Moreover, through the detection of seven gases including ethanol, such as methanol, acetone , benzene, formaldehyde, isopropanol, and nitrogen dioxide, we found that the fabricated sensor based on 4 wt% Au-doped In 2 O 3 had good selectivity towards ethanol. Finally, the mechanism of the excellent performance of the 4 wt% Au-doped In 2 O 3 sensor for ethanol was explained.

MXene-derived anatase-TiO2/rutile-TiO2/In2O3 heterojunctions toward efficient hydrogen evolution

Wenxiang Yang,Huilin Hou,Yang Yang,Guozhi Ma,Xiaoqiang Zhan,Hongli Yang,Weiyou Yang

Heterojunction engineering has been deemed as one of effective strategies to develop advanced photocatalysts for photocatalytic H 2 evolution. In the present work, we report the rationally designed TiO 2 (anatase)/TiO 2 (rutile)/In 2 O 3 (TiO 2 (A-R)/In 2 O 3 ) heterojunctions through a one-step in situ calcination method for photocatalytic H 2 evolution. The as-constructed TiO 2 (A-R)/In 2 O 3 heterojunction photocatalysts deliver a H 2 evolution rate of 268 μmol g −1 h −1 , which is 1488 times greater than that of pristine In 2 O 3 . Such significantly enhanced behaviors could be attributed to the MXene-derived porous multilayer-like nanostructures , which offer more reactive sites, promote light harvesting, and accelerate the transfer of photogenerated carriers. Moreover, the formation of two type-II semiconductor heterojunctions with intimate contact among anatase TiO 2 , rutile TiO 2 and In 2 O 3 affords the synergetic effect for improved charge separation with boosted photocatalytic H 2 evolution.
