Novel dual sustained-release film with antioxidant/antibacterial synergy. • PACS grafting enables persistent antioxidant activity. • CV@ZIF-8 nanoparticles provide prolonged antibacterial release. • Enhanced barrier, mechanical and UV-shielding properties. • Effectively preserves strawberry quality and extends shelf life. Few bio-based active packaging films simultaneously achieve sustained antioxidant and antibacterial functions, making a dual sustained-release system highly desirable. To extend postharvest fruit shelf life, this study developed an active packaging film based on konjac glucomannan (KGM). A dual-release antioxidant and antibacterial system was constructed by introducing proanthocyanidin-grafted chitosan (PACS) and carvacrol-loaded ZIF-8 nanoparticles (CV@ZIF-8). The resulting KPCZ-3 film exhibited a tensile strength of 34.36 MPa, a water vapor permeability of 2.72 g·mm·m −2 ·day −1 ·kPa, and an oxygen permeability of 1.27 × 10 −3 g·s −1 ·m −2 . In strawberry preservation tests at 25 °C, the film synergistically delayed quality deterioration and maintained optimal sensory and nutritional quality for over 4 days. In addition, the film showed good biodegradability and biocompatibility. These results indicate that KGM/PACS/CV@ZIF-8 films, as novel degradable active packaging, have promising application prospects. A multifunctional ZIF-67@Carmine (ZIF-67@Car) nanomaterial was synthesized and incorporated into a matrix of konjac glucomannan and carboxymethyl chitosan (KGM/CMCS, KC) to fabricate an intelligent active packaging film with dual functionality: active preservation and real-time freshness monitoring. Results indicated that KC remarkably enhanced the uniform distribution of ZIF-67@Car particle. Meanwhile, the addition of 20% ZIF-67@Car significantly improved the mechanical performance, hydrophobicity, and UV-blocking ability of the composite film. The optimized film demonstrated an ultimate tensile strength of 10.16 ± 1.05 Mpa and an elongation at break of 27.87 ± 3.53%. For active preservation, the film exhibited strong antioxidant activity (approximately 50% higher than pristine KC film) and potent antibacterial properties with over 99% inhibition rate. For intelligent monitoring, the film displayed a distinct colorimetric response to ammonia, transitioning from purple to brown during shrimp spoilage tests, enabling real-time visual freshness assessment. These findings confirm that the KC/ZIF-67@Car nanocomposite films, endowed with excellent antibacterial and ammonia-responsive functions, hold significant potential as intelligent active packaging materials for practical food preservation and quality assessment.

The heterogeneous hygrothermal degradation (HHTD) method can simply and efficiently prepare depolymerized konjac glucomannan (KGM). The degradation rate was significantly improved when the KGM powder moisture was below 20%, but basically no longer increased after the moisture was above 20%. This study systematically examined the influence of the initial moisture content of powder on the molecular structure of KGM and the vapor pressure of degradation system to elucidate the association of these changes with hygrothermal degradation. The results indicated that with the increase of powder moisture, the disorder of KGM amorphous region increased dramatically, and the ordering degree of aggregate structure decreased. Water notably enhanced the freedom of KGM molecular chain motion by reducing the intermolecular hydrogen bond interaction and expanding the free volume. Furthermore, powder moisture markedly promoted the degradation of KGM by increasing the vapor pressure and mass transfer rate of the closed degradation system. The system reached saturated vapor pressure when the moisture content was above 20%. Consequently, the synergistic effect of the water-induced changes in KGM molecular structure and system vapor pressure significantly accelerated the hygrothermal degradation rate of KGM. The promotion effect of powder moisture on degradation reached the upper limit when the moisture content was higher than 20%, thus moderately solvated KGM-20% powder can achieve an efficient hygrothermal degradation effect. This work is expected to provide theoretical bases for the industrial application of HHTD as a controllable and efficient degradation method of KGM.

Konjac glucomannan (KGM) is used as an additive to improve the properties of frozen wheat-based foods. The effects of KGM concentration (0.5, 1.5, 2.5, 3.5 and 4.5 g/100 g of the wheat starch weight) on the thermal properties, rheology, digestibility and microstructure of frozen wheat starch were investigated in this study. The results revealed that KGM had a positive influence on the water absorption capacity, transparency, thermal stability and viscoelasticity of frozen wheat starch but there was a negative effect on solubility, swelling force and digestibility. Specifically, KGM decreased the crystallinity of frozen wheat starch from 28.57 to 6.47%, implying that KGM could retard the retrogradation of frozen wheat starch. Notably, the network structure of frozen wheat starch with KGM addition was less disruption of surface structure and more adhesions than those of control. Generally, the addition of KGM had positive effects on the thermal properties, rheology and digestibility of frozen wheat starch, which provides a theoretical basis for the application of KGM in the industrial production of frozen wheat-based foods.

A pH-sensitive food packaging film was prepared based on konjac glucomannan (KGM) and hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) incorporated with mulberry extracts 2 (MBE). FT-IR and XRD analysis revealed that there are good molecular interactions among the three components. The incorporation of MBE into KGM and HPMC (KH) films can significantly improve the mechanical properties and UV resistance. Notably, the KH-MBE-20% film almost completely blocked UV light in the range of 200–600 nm. The best antioxidant and antibacterial properties were obtained when the addition of MBE in the composite film was 20%. In addition, KH-MBE film has good responsiveness to buffers with pH range from 2 to 12. In visual monitoring experiments using the film on fresh fish, the color of the KH-MBE film changed from purple to gray to yellow as the freshness of the fish decreased, and the KH-MBE-20% film had the best color stability. Therefore, intelligent packaging of KH-MBE film has potential applications in real-time monitoring of fish freshness.

At present, biomass foamlike materials are a hot research topic, but they need to be improved urgently due to their defects such as large size shrinkage rate, poor mechanical strength, and easy hydrolysis. In this study, the novel konjac glucomannan (KGM) composite aerogels modified with hydrophilic isocyanate and expandable graphite were prepared by a facile vacuum freeze-drying method. Compared with the unmodified KGM aerogel, the volume shrinkage of the KGM composite aerogel (KPU-EG) decreased from 36.36 ± 2.47% to 8.64 ± 1.46%. Additionally, the compressive strength increased by 450%, and the secondary repeated compressive strength increased by 1476%. After soaking in water for 28 days, mass retention after hydrolysis of the KPU-EG aerogel increased from 51.26 ± 2.33% to more than 85%. The UL-94 vertical combustion test showed that the KPU-EG aerogel can achieve a V-0 rating, and the limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of the modified aerogel can reach up to 67.3 ± 1.5%. To sum up, the cross-linking modification of hydrophilic isocyanate can significantly improve the mechanical properties, flame retardancy, and hydrolysis resistance of KGM aerogels. We believe that this work can provide excellent hydrolytic resistance and mechanical properties and has broad application prospects in practical packaging, heat insulation, sewage treatment, and other aspects.

Orally administered colon-targeted formulations of drugs are of great importance in managing diseases in the colon. However, it is often challenging to maintain the integrity of such formulations during delivery, particularly in the gastric environment, which may lead to premature drug release before reaching the targeted colon. Herein, an oral colon-targeted drug delivery hydrogel (OCDDH) was developed through cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8])-mediated noncovalent cross-linking of phenylalanine (Phe)-modified Konjac glucomannan (KGM), in which berberine (BBR), a natural anti-inflammatory product originating from Chinese medicine, was loaded into the hydrogel matrix. With the strong host–guest complexation mediated cross-linking and the inherent reversibility of such interactions, KGM-Phe@CB[8] hydrogel exhibited a readily tunable degree of cross-linking and an excellent self-healing capability, and therefore the hydrogel retained ultrahigh stability in the gastric environment, which is important for orally administered formulations to target the colon. In the colon, KGM may get degraded by colon-specific enzymes, β-mannanase or β-glucosidase, resulting in burst release of the loaded cargoes on site. The structure and specific payload release of the hydrogel, with and without BBR, have been fully characterized in vitro, and the therapeutic effect of BBR-loaded KGM-Phe@CB[8] hydrogel was evaluated against dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) induced ulcerative colitis (UC) in a mouse model. Very interestingly, the BBR-loaded KGM-Phe@CB[8] hydrogel exhibited significantly improved therapeutic efficacy in treating colitis, without causing any systemic toxicity, when compared with free BBR. This strategy may pave a new way in the development of advanced supramolecular OCDDH.

KGM/ZIF-8 aerogels were synthesized by combining konjac glucomannan (KGM) with zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) for the removal of ciprofloxacin (CIP) from water. The structure, morphology and properties were studied by TEM, SEM, FTIR, XRD and XPS. The effects of pH, ionic strength, contact time and temperature were investigated. Rheological studies indicated that KGM/ZIF-8 hydrogels were pseudoplastic fluid, and KZ0.5 performed the best in terms of the plasticity. KZ0.5 showed excellent CIP adsorption performance. The adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order model, and CIP adsorption was fit well by the Langmuir model (R 2 > 0.99), which suggested the monolayer adsorption of CIP due to the uniform pore size distribution on the surface of KZ0.5.The maximum adsorption capacity of the KZ0.5 reached to 811.03 mg/g at 303 K when the concentration of CIP was 1500 mg/L (pH = 7.0), which was higher than that of the other adsorbents. Thermodynamic parameters, such as △G, △H and △S, were estimated to understand the mechanism of CIP adsorption. KZ0.5 showed no significant decrease in CIP adsorption after six cycles. These features reveal that KGM/ZIF-8 aerogels may be promising adsorbents for CIP removal from water.

Temperature-sensitive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)/konjac glucomannan/graphene oxide (PNIPAM/KGM/GO) composite membranes were prepared by solution blending using calcium ions as a cross-linker. The composite membranes were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy (Raman), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The swelling, mechanical property, phase transformation behaviors, and enzymatic degradation activities were also determined. Results revealed that the phase transition temperatures of all the composite membranes were approximately 35°C. The PNIPAM/KGM/GO composite membranes showed enhanced mechanical property. The swelling behavior and enzymatic degradation of the PNIPAM/KGM/GO composite membranes improved compared with those of conventional PNIPAM hydrogel and PNIPAM/KGM composite membranes. Thus, the PNIPAM/KGM/GO composite membranes have potential applications in the biomedical field as skin dressings.

Despite the excellent characteristics of carnauba wax (CW), hydrophobicity in particular, its complementary effect on the enhancement of konjac glucomannan (KGM) films remains poorly documented. KGM is a promising food bio-packaging material with excellent film-forming abilities, which could be improved further through modification of its hydrophilic nature using CW. In this study, emulsified composite films (KW) of KGM incorporated with varied CW concentration levels (0%, 4%, 8%, 12%, 16% and 20% w/w) were successfully prepared by solvent casting method. Increasing CW in KW films significantly improved the hydrophobicity, barrier and mechanical properties. The recorded improvements in functional properties relative to KGM films include fivefold solubility reduction, twofold contact angle and strength increment, as well as significant increase in stretch (61%) and decrease in water vapour transmission rate (48%). Microstructure analyses using scanning electron microscopy demonstrated remarkable improvements in cohesiveness, smoothness and homogeneity in KW aggregates with higher CW concentrations. Generally, our findings reveal the potential use of KW films as food packaging material which could reduce the availability of unsafe and environmentally unfriendly food packages in the market.

Patulin (PAT) is a hazardous mycotoxin frequently occurs in fruit industry. A reusable g-C 3 N 4 -SH@KG composite aerogel for PAT removal in a novel “dark adsorption-light regeneration” mode was prepared by thiol(-SH) functionalization and konjac glucomannan (KG) immobilization. The g-C 3 N 4 -SH@KG was characterized by SEM, FT-IR, XPS and UV–Vis DRS, and its PAT adsorption and photocatalytic regeneration behaviors and mechanisms were investigated. The g-C 3 N 4 -SH@KG exhibited good regeneration performance, maintaining 83% of PAT initial adsorption capacity (0.92 mg/g) after 5 “adsorption-regeneration” cycles. The adsorption process was endothermic and spontaneous. •OH and h + generated by photocatalysis were the main substances that degraded PAT into two products and regenerated -SH. The g-C 3 N 4 -SH@KG could effectively remove PAT without negative impact on juice quality. The study provided a new strategy for the regeneration of thiol-functionalized PAT adsorbents, and a new idea for the application of non-selective photocatalysis in the control of food contaminations.

Konjac glucomannan (KGM) is a dietary fiber supplement that exhibits multiple biological activities, including weight control and regulation of glucose and lipid metabolism. Currently, KGM intake patterns in practical applications include KGM sol, thermal irreversible gel, and frozen thermal irreversible gel. In this study, four intake patterns of KGM, namely KGM sol (KS), deacetylated KGM (DK), KGM gel (KG) and frozen KGM gel (FKG), were used as materials to explore the effects of KGM intake patterns on glucose and lipid metabolism and intestinal flora of obese mice induced by high fat diet under the same dose. Results showed that any type of KGM intake could reduce body weight, fat mass, lipid levels, and insulin resistance in obese mice, as well as partially alleviating liver damage and inflammation caused by obesity. However, KS has the most significant effect on controlling blood glucose and blood lipid in obese mice. Additionally, it was found that KS, DK, KG and FKG can increase the α-diversity of intestinal microflora in high-fat mice, and improve the microflora disorder in high-fat mice. Finally, KS may increase the levels of fasting appetite hormones GLP-1 and PYY in mice, up-regulate the expression of LDLR, GCK and G-6-pase mRNA, and increase the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in the intestinal flora of mice, thus regulating glucose and lipid metabolism . This study systematically investigated the effects of different intake forms of KGM on metabolism and intestinal flora in obese mice, which is of great significance for further understanding the role of KGM in the prevention and treatment of obesity metabolic diseases, and for developing targeted dietary interventions.
